Leon Wilkeson April 02, 1952 - July 27, 2001 Bass guitarist Leon Wilkeson, died in his sleep at a hotel in Ponte Vedra Beach, about 30 kilometers south of Jacksonville in his 49th year. He was one of the founding members of the legendary American rock band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Who’s name immortalized a gym teacher, Leonard Skinner, who was known to punish students who had long hair. Lynyrd Skynyrd was founded in the late 60's by Ronnie Van Zant, and throughout the 70's established themselves as one of the brightest bands in America with such hit songs as "Sweet home Alabama", "Gimme Three Steps", and "Free Bird". On October 20, 1977, at the top of their commercial success, a tragedy occurred, as their chartered plane ran out of gas and crashed near to McComb, Mississippi. Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, backup singer Cassie Gaines and assistant road manager Dean Kilpatric were all killed and other members were injured include Leon Wilkeson. "Street Survivors", their sixth album, was released three days before the tragic plane crash of October 20, 1977. Ironically, the cover of the band’s last album pictured the members standing in flames and included an order form for a "Lynyrd Skynyrd survival kit." There was also a Van Zant composition about death called "That Smell." The album cover was changed shortly after the accident, and the album went on to become one of Skynyrd’s biggest sellers. To mark the tenth anniversary of the fatal plane crash, in 1987, surviving members Leon Wilkeson, Gary Rossington, Billy Powell and Ed King put Lynyrd Skynyrd back together, along with guitarist Randall Hall and Ronnie Van Zant's younger brother, Johnny Van Zant on lead vocals. The revamped lineup embarked on a 32-date reunion tour, which was chronicled on the following year’s double live album, "Southern by the Grace of God/Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute Tour-1987". In 1991 the same group began recording again.

With great sadness, the family of Kathleen Margaret (Kay) Sanderson, (nee Cliff) announces her sudden passing on Wednesday, July 25, 2001 at the age of 82 years. Born at Kelwood, Manitoba on August 18, 1918, Kathleen Cliff was educated at Kelwood and Semans, Saskatchewan. She later attended Normal School at Brandon, Manitoba then taught for five years. In 1944, she joined the Royal Canadian Navy, serving in Halifax and St. John's. She married William Clifford (Cliff) Sanderson on July 3, 1946. Cliff's R.C.A.F. postings took them to Edmonton, Toronto, England and France. They "retired" to Calgary in 1966, after postings in Ottawa and Cold Lake. Kay is the author of "200 Remarkable Alberta Women" published in 1999 by the Famous Five Foundation. The book was the culmination of a project she began in 1973, researching the lives and contributions of Alberta women from 1800 to the late 20th Century. A dozen years and thousands of conversations later, she had collected and archived the stories and photographs of more than two hundred individuals. Kay's eyes would light up when she talked about "her ladies," usually from memory. As well as history and genealogy, her passions included gardening, reading, and church activities. Kay was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend who cherished her family and friends above all. Her smile, her warmth and her contagious enthusiasm will be deeply missed by everyone who knew her. Kathleen is survived by her son, Mark Sanderson and his partner, Martha Billes of Calgary; by her son, Ian Sanderson and his wife Kim of Edmonton; and by four grandchildren, Liam, Erin, Julia and David. She is also survived by a sister, Lorella Phillips of Kamloops, BC; her grandchildren's mother Maureen Sanderson of Calgary; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Jack Boyle of Coquitlam, BC; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Roy and Eugenie Sanderson of Estevan, SK. Kathleen was predeceased by Cliff on May 16, 1998 and by their son Paul in 1995. Nancy Fleming Kightley, in her 85th year, at the Hilltop Manor Nursing Home, Merrickville, on Thursday July 28, 2001. Nancy was a former teacher with the Renfrew and Ottawa School Boards and a 40 year member of Sterling Chapter, Renfrew, Order of the Eastern Star. Nancy is the widow of Roy and predeceased by 2 brothers, 2 sisters and 2 infant siblings. She is survived by her daughter Anne Coons, Smiths Falls, her son Doug Kightley (Lori), White Lake, one sister, Jean, Penticton; 4 grandchildren, David Coons (Tracy), Sean Coons (Cathy), Jennifer and Murray Kightley; and 5 great grandchildren; Jesse, Spencer, Taija, Terran and Aidan Coons.
