Born in York, Yorkshire England, March 3rd, 1913 died Tuesday, May 22nd, 2001 at the age of 88 in Victoria, while attended by his son-in-law and granddaughter. Fred was predeceased by his wife of 40 years Ethel May Nussey, sister Hilda Cork and brother Arthur Cork. Survived by loving daughters Sheila Mae McDonald and Sharon Fae Miller, six grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and sister-in-law Gladys Cork. As a young boy Fred lived in York and Bromley Kent. He emigrated to Canada at the age of sixteen. He worked as a farm labourer and apprenticed in the printing trade before joining the RCAF at the outbreak of WWII. After the war, Fred returned to the printing trade with the Queens Printing Bureau and moved to Ottawa, where he raised his family. In retirement Fred satisfied his wanderlust with several trips abroad, finally settling in Victoria with family in 1998. Fred was a 50-year Mason, member of the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa and faithful member of Westboro United Church in Ottawa. Fred we will miss you and your recitations at our table. He will be fondly remembered by his many friends there, and at St. Stephen's Presbyterian Church in Ottawa, and by those who shared his interests in tennis, wine tasting, the Canadian Association of Certified Management Consultants, the Delta Upsilon Fraternity at U of A, the 78th Fraser Highlanders and the Scouting movement. On June 12, 2001, Kazimierz Jagodzinski passed away peacefully in his sleep in his own bed at home, in his eighty-fifth year. He is survived by his beloved son John Jagodzinski and close friends Myna Sega, Tanya Smith, and Sandy Macdonald, he will be deeply missed, but never forgotten. Shannon and Alice "Rise free from care before the dawn." Shannon Van Wagner and her daughter Alice (3 years) were taken from us in a tragic accident on June 9th, 2001, at Camp Nominingue. Shannon, who was born in 1960, was Executive Director and CEO of Camp Nominingue, a 76-year-old boys' camp located north of Montreal. Growing up at camp, Shannon always regretted that she could not join the boys in all their exciting activities but she made up for it when she joined the camp staff and began to work her way up the ranks. Beginning as the van driver, she also served as Nature Specialist, Canoe Trip Director (3 years), Program Director and Business Manager. When her father, Peter, retired in 1993, she became the third-generation Van Wagner to run the camp. Shannon attended John Rennie High School and Queen of Angels Academy before earning a degree in Environmental Biology at University of Guelph. She then earned her teaching degree from McGill University and went on to teach at Brook Valley School outside of Perth, Ontario, and at the Inuit School at Great Whale in Northern Quebec. A woman of eclectic interests and strong intelligence, she had taken breaks during university to blacksmith, build barns, waitress, prune orchards and travel. She brought this diverse collection of rich skills to camp where campers and staff became the beneficiaries of her knowledge, wisdom and generosity. Camp was home to Shannon and her daughter Alice. Shannon delighted in introducing Alice to the pleasures and wonders of camp life. They shared an intense love for one another and a passion for the wilderness. Alice was truly her mother's daughter. Both Shannon and Alice were loved by thousands of campers, parents, staff and friends. They will be missed with unimaginable sadness by Shannon's parents, Jean and Peter Van Wagner, her sister Elisa (Michael Blakey), her brothers Jay (Gisele) and Michael (Leanne); Aunts Rachel Hendershott, Princeton, N.J., Mary Waldvogel, Barrie, Ont., Betty and Helen, Saskatoon, Sask., Uncle Charles (Jean), Deep River, Ont.; nephews and nieces and Alice's counsins, Rachel, Emmett, Marie-Claire and Joffre; and numerous other relatives living in New Jersey, Westmount, Deep River and Saskatoon. Alice will be especially missed by Grandpa Bruce and Grandma Nancy Frommell in North Carolina. Dr., OC,OBE Peacefully on Sunday, June 10, 2001, in North Hero, VT at the age of 96. He is survived by his beloved companion, Jolanta Sise of Montreal; children Wendy (John) McDonald of Edmonton and Peter (Margaret) of Ottawa; his brother Archibald; 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wives, Margaret Weurpel and Jessie McGeachy, and by his brothers Robert and Kenneth. His enthusiasm and his compassion for the unfortunate led him to work as a teacher-miner with Frontier College; to McGill Medical School, where he graduated in 1930 with the Holmes Gold Medal; and to a war-time career as a senior Naval Medical Officer at the HMCS Stadacona for which he was awarded the OBE. After the war, he practised Internal Medicine in Montreal and Winnipeg but his interest in medical education took him to the University of Saskatchewan in 1952 where, as a Dean, he expanded the Medical School curriculum to a full four-year program. In 1962 he became the first executive secretary of the Association of Canadian Medical Colleges, and was involved in the establishment of medical schools at Sherbrooke and Memorial Universities. As a recognized expert in the social aspects of health care and medical education, he served as consultant or advisor to many organizations throughout Canada, the USA and the world. He was an early and ardent supporter of universal health care and made a major contribution to the Hall Royal Commission on Health Services. In his retirement, he was active on the Boards of the Centretown Community Health Centre in Ottawa and Frontier College. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1980 and received Honourary Doctoral degrees from four Universities: Saskatchewan, Queens, Sherbrooke and Memorial. He was awarded the highest honours from the Canadian Medical Association, the Association of Canadian Medical Colleges, the Canadian Public Health Association and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. He was a friend and admirer of Norman Bethune, and was a founding member of the Bethune Memorial Society, co-authoring several publications and co-ordinating a Bethune Symposium in 1979. He was active in the Canada-China Friendship Society and was honoured several times in China. He will be missed by the many friends, students and colleagues who were touched by his personal warmth and outstanding abilities in all his various roles and careers. A Memorial Service will be held in Montreal on June 20, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the Mount Royal Funeral Complex. HAROLD DAVID ALLEN Harold Allen, 82, of Devlin, Ont., passed away Thursday, June 7, 2001 at McKellar Hospital in Thunder Bay, Ont., with his loving family at his side. He was born March 2, 1919 in Emo, Ont. to the late Thomas and Helen Allen. Harold lived all his life in the Devlin area, moving from their farm in the fall of 1974 to the village of Devlin. In his earlier years, Harold was employed with the Department of Highways and with George Wagman (land surveyor). Later on, Harold began employment in the maintenance department at Rainycrest Home for the Aged in Fort Frances, Ont., working there until retiring at the age of 65. Harold enjoyed the outdoors, spending countless hours working on the farm. Harold and Millie also attended many card parties and were regular patrons of dances featuring “old-time” orchestras. Harold’s great sense of humour endeared him to his many friends, and he will be dearly missed. Harold was united in marriage March 28, 1942 to the former Mildred “Millie” Tibbs, who predeceased him Nov. 30, 1997. He is survived by his sons, Jack and wife, Elaine (Anderson), Wayne and wife, Brenda (Hawley), and Murnie and wife, Brenda (Jordens), all of Fort Frances, Ont. He also is survived by four grandsons, Jeff of Kitchener, Ont., Clarke of Fort Frances, Ont., Jason of Thunder Bay, Ont., and Logan of Fort Frances, Ont. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Gladys Allen and Alice Allen; and brother-in-law, Zolton Gfellner. He was predeceased by brothers, Cecil, Stan, Len, twin brother, Earl, in infancy, Wallace, Ralph, and Doug; and sisters, baby girl in infancy, Blanche, Helen, Elsie, and May. Funeral services were held Monday, June 11, 2001 at 2 p.m. at Guthrie United Church in Devlin, Ont. Barbara Miller officiated, with interment in the Devlin Cemetery. Pallbearers were Bill McLean, Bob McLean, Wayne Salchert, Lyle Kellar, Dave Cooke, and Elder Jack.
