1929 - 2001 Ray passed away peacefully on May 19 at the Summerland General Hospital with family at his side. He was born in Portage la Prairie, MB the youngest of fifteen children born to Frank and Isobell Longstreet. His wife Gwen, his sons Ian (Krystie) and Murray watched with love and admiration as Ray showed patience and courage through this final illness. Also surviving is his sister Marion Genereux of Duncan, BC. A Family service will be held and cremation has taken place. (nee Robertson) Born in Ottawa, Ont., December 5th, 1919. Age 81. She died peacefully on May 18th, 2001, in the West Vancouver Care Centre. Survived, and lovingly remembered, by her husband of nearly 55 years, Gordon, and her daughters Mary Lou Hearn, and Kathleen Grace Neros and her husband Ken Neros. Pre-deceased by her dear daughter "Margo" in 1971. Survived also by her sisters Ruth Campbell of Ottawa, and Marjorie Lafleur (Vincent) of Aylmer, Que., and brother Kenneth Robertson (Anne) of Cornwall, Ont., and by a number of nephews. Lois obtained her RN in Hamilton, Ont., in 1943 and worked as a nurse in Hamilton and Montreal until she married in 1946. She participated in church and school activities as her family grew up, and volunteered with Pets Limited in West Vancouver. She loved gardening, crafts and her pets, and was always a good friend and neighbour. A memorial service and reception will be held at Hollyburn Funeral Home, 1807 Marine Drive, West Vancouver, B.C., on Saturday, May 26, at 2 p.m. a donation to a charity of your choice would be appreciated. 1920-2001 Passed away peacefully surrounded by those that loved him after a short and courageous battle with cancer on Monday, May 21, 2001. Jerome was born in Granville Ferry, NS, on April 8, 1920. He attended the University of New Brunswick as a R.O.T.P. Candidate, graduating in 1943 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry. Jerome joined the Federal Public Service in 1949 and served many years with the Department of Forestry in Ottawa. In 1966 he transferred to Chicago, Il, with the Department of Industry Trade and Commerce as Trade Attache and Acting Consul General. He retired in Ottawa from the Federal Public Service in 1980 as Chief of the Furniture Division, Industry Trade and Commerce. After retirement, Jerry joined the Canadian Council of Furniture Manufacturers as Executive Director until his second retirement in 1988. Jerry is survived by his beloved wife Shirley (Eves-Cochrane), daughter Ann Kovacs (John) of Rio Verde, Arizona, and son Donald of Toronto. He is predeceased by his first wife Dorothy (Webb) and beloved son Robert (Bob). He will be missed by his grandchildren Wendy (Kevin) Flondor, Jennifer (Steven) Georgopulos of Chicago, Stacey, Michael and Heather of Saint John, NB, Helen Bellemare, Trevor and Cathy-Ann all of Winnipeg, MB, and several great-grandchildren. JOHN WAYNE HEROD On May 15, 2001, his 37th wedding anniversary, John Wayne Herod entered into rest at Emo Hospital. Born Oct. 4, 1941 and raised on his parents’ Oneida farm, his early years were spent at Caledonia Allis Chalmers. He was married May 15, 1964 to Dianne Jerome, and they moved to Hamilton and then Stratford while he was employed by G.A.C. International. Gradually, the love of the land lured them back to Oneida, where he purchased his own farm. In 1981, the decision was made to explore Northwestern Ontario and ultimately the family settled on Lauzon Road in Pinewood with their herd of sheep and goats. Wayne wanted to continue using A.I. technology on his livestock so he formed Northland Inseminators Inc. Concern for natural livestock supplements led to his distribution of mineral supplements under Briarwood Stock Farms. He enjoyed woodworking, and was skilled in cabinet-making. Throughout his life, he was always learning new skills/ideas and sharing them with others. At age 55, he returned to school full-time to become a massage therapist and upon graduation, the Fort Frances Remedial Therapy Clinic was established with fellow student Karla Bodnar. Due to illness, his life was cut short and the work that he loved unfinished. He will be sadly missed by friends, neighbours, clients, but especially by his family--wife, Dianne, sons, Phil and wife, Sandra, and her daughter, Richeline, and her children, Christian and Matthew, and J.P. and Gina and their children, Teresa and Rebecca; daughters, Cindy and husband, Tim Lepinski, and their children, Aaron and Andrew, and Vikki and husband, Dwayne Robar, and their children, Nathan and Stephanie; parents, Jack and Ina Herod; sister, Linda Best; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial services were held Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at 2 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances, Ont., with Pastor Brad Ricci officiating. FREDERICK WILLIAM DUNCAN In loving memory of Frederick William Duncan, 80, of Fort Frances, Ont., who passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2001 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances. Frederick was born June 7, 1920 in Rainy River, Ont. to the late William and Mary Duncan. He spent the majority of his life in the Rainy River area. He was a veteran of WWII, enlisting in 1942 and serving overseas in the United Kingdom, central Mediterranean area, and Continental Europe with the Royal Canadian Corp. of Signals attached to the 1st Canadian Armoured Brigade. He was discharged in 1946 and received the 1939-45 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Stars, Canadian Volunteer Medals, and the Service Medal and Clasp. Fred returned home and began working for Ontario Hydro as a lineman and then with customer service. On Jan. 25, 1969, he was united in marriage to Alyse McGillivray. Fred was 48-year member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. #29 and a member of the Masonic Granite Lodge #446. Fred and Alyse loved to spend time at the cabin on Black Island on Rainy Lake, and he always looked forward to his yearly duck hunt with his friends. He was predeceased by his parents; and his wife, Alyse, on April 12, 1999. Fred leaves behind his children, Lynda (Ross) Chessell of Kakabeka Falls, Ont., and Terry (Doreen) Duncan of Regina, Sask.; grandchildren, Terril (Richard Mason) Chessell of Winnipeg, Man., Sheri (Brent) Rowley of Regina, Sask., Tracey (Phillip) Mack of Picture Butte, Alta., Emmy Chessell of Winnipeg, Man., Calvin Duncan of Winnipeg, Man., and Anna Chessell of Kakabeka Falls, Ont.; and great-granddaughters, Amanda, D’Anna, and Melina Rowley of Regina, Sask. HAZEL KATHLEEN DOUGLAS It is with great sadness we, as a family, announce the passing of Hazel Kathleen Douglas at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital (McKellar) on Tuesday, May 22, 2001. Hazel was born in Mather Township, Ont. on Dec. 8, 1914. She was a resident of Versa Care in Thunder Bay, Ont. for the past three-and-a-half years. She was predeceased by her parents, Jack and Cecilia Irvine; sons, Vernal Johnson and Ricky Douglas; and brother, William (Bill) Irvine. Hazel is survived by her husband, Elroy Douglas of Fort Frances, Ont.; son, Don (Marge) Johnson; daughter-in-law, Maureena Johnson; brother, Elmer Irvine (Grace) of Devon, England (presently here); and sister-in-law, Alice Irvine of Emo, Ont. She also is survived by grandchildren, Lori Johnson of Calgary, Alta., Harley (Kathy) Johnson, Susan (Dan) Cross, Debbie (Larry) Newbold, and Darcy (Tanya) Johnson, all of Thunder Bay, Ont., and Allan (Holly) Johnson of Thorold, Ont. Hazel also is survived by 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and numerous other family and friends. Hazel lived most of her life in Emo. During hard times, it was difficult for the youthful Hazel and young family, but she persevered and brought up her family with pride and respect. She was a very strong and hard-working woman. It is with deep sorrow that the family of Clarence (Murph) Chamberlain announces his death on March 21, 2001, at the age of 82 years. His children, Lynne (Wayne Corkum), Scott (Brenda) and Colin (Debbie) were at his bedside at St. Vincent's Hospital, Ottawa, and they mourn the loss of a wonderful father. He was predeceased by his wife Bette (Gilchrist) in 1997 whom he loved and missed and is joined together with after 55 years of marriage. Murph spent the four years of WWII in England and Europe with the RCASC and returned to join the Ottawa Fire Department. After many years as a city firefighter, he joined the RCAF to continue his love of the job at various locations in Canada. Murph subsequently joined the Public Service in Trenton, Ontario and worked at Mountainview, Ontario until his final retirement. Murph's will to live was not diminished by the illnesses that robbed him of his voice and mobility for many years and his quiet, gentle strength helped him to accept his restrictions. Murph will be remembered as a loving and kind father and grandfather who put his family before all else. The family wishes to thank the staff on 3 A/B at St. Vincent's Hospital for the wonderful care and kindness provided during his last year and especially during his final hours. ARNOLD DOUGLAS SHORTREED Arnold Shortreed, 82, of Watten Township, Ont., passed away Friday, May 18, 2001 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont. He was born April 20, 1919 in Emo, Ont. to the late James and Rose Shortreed. During WWII, Arnold served with the Ordinance Corps in Canada. Upon his discharge from the services, he moved to Toronto. On Feb. 15, 1941, he was united in marriage to the former Elsie Tummey. Arnold lived in Toronto for 30 years, where he operated his own roofing business. From there, he returned to Fort Frances to live up the lake and work for the MNR until his retirement. He was predeceased by his three brothers, Vernon, Raymond, and Alan Shortreed; and by one sister, Laney. Arnold is survived by his wife, Elsie Shortreed of Watten Township, Ont.; one sister, Ethel Cooke of Port Albernie, B.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 24, 2001 at 2 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances. Patrick Playfair will officiate, with interment in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances. Friends may visit prior to funeral services Thursday afternoon from 1 p.m. until service time. Pallbearers will be Randy Shortreed, Arnold Nielsen, Rod Salchert, and Roland Crawford, Richard Lyons, and Harlan Faragher. In memoriam donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, 920 Frenette Ave., Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 3N4.
