Teacher and supervisor of Home Economics with the Ottawa Public Schools for many years, Isabel Thomson McGiffin died at the Ottawa Hospital on Wednesday, May 9, 2001. She was 92. Isabel was the youngest daughter of Richard McGiffin and his wife, Elizabeth White. She was predeceased by her brothers Stuart and Alan and her sisters Jessie Cowan and Kathleen Pennock. She was the much loved aunt of her nephew Richard and nieces Eleanor White, Kathleen Satchell, Mary Jones and Margaret Heilig. Her many great and great-great nieces and nephews in Canada and the United States looked up to her, and adored her. Isabel also had great affection for her cousins Bob McGiffin, John McGiffin and Ann Hobden. She was a life-long and devoted member of Dominion-Chalmers United Church, and its predecessor Bank Street Presbyterian Church. On Friday, May 11, 2001, with great dignity and courage. Devoted husband of the late Pat Crichton. Loving and beloved father of Peter, Kelly, John, Jo, Martha and the recently deceased Christopher. Great father-in-law and friend to Margaret, Mel, Lynda, Maxence and Barry. A dream of a grandfather to 16 adoring grandchildren. Affectionate brother to sister Chris, brother Don and his late sister Jane. Hal had a life as eclectic and active as his mind and body. In youth he was a champion amateur boxer and swimmer, pioneer on the Gatineau ski slopes and a flight instructor in the RCAF during WWII. His enduring and genuine charm made him a champion salesman and contractor for much of his life. Until he was 84, he drove in daily to the Ottawa Court House from his beloved Constance Bay to work as a title searcher and "social convener" of the city's registry office. Hal was a passionate "doer" right to the end. He will be much missed and remembered. Friends may call at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Road, Nepean (between Bayshore and Baseline Rd.) on Monday. Funeral service will be held in the chapel on Tuesday at 2 p.m. Interment Pinecrest Cemetery.
