Formerly of Montreal and Greenwich, CT. She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her three children Wendy, Sally and Allan, and her three grandchildren Jessie, Matt and Sara. Born September 20, 1920 Clementsport, Nova Scotia, Irene enjoyed high spirits all her life and shared those high spirits with her parents, her siblings Roscoe (deceased), Glenn, Ruby, Eva and Donald; her children, Donald, Ruby, Stephanie (deceased), Martha, Glenn (Jan) and Shawn (Cathy); grandchildren, Christine, Ronda, Tamara, Sheri, Rhia, Susan, Shara and Heather and 7 great-grandchildren all inherited that zest for life. Many others were privileged to have experienced her love and caring and ever present sense of humor. À Ottawa, le 3 mai 2001, est décédé le Dr Robert Gourdeau, bien-aimé époux de Marie-Claire Poirier (époux en premières noces de feu Pauline Hébert). Outre son épouse, il laisse dans le deuil sa fille Diane, ses soeurs et frères: Louis (feu Paule Gaulin), Guy (Aline Voyer), Dr Maurice (Mary Bériault), Paul (Simone Beaulieu), Gabrielle (Dr Roger Samson), Fernande (Dr Guy Nadeau), Jacqueline (feu Roland Dugré), Lucille (Dominique Lamontagne) et Philippe; sa belle-mère Rita Marin- Poirier, ses bellessoeurs: Elizabeth Poirier-Desjardins (Jean-Claude), Estelle Duclos (Jean-Pierre), son beau-frère François Poirier, ainsi que de nombreux neveux, nièces, parents et ami(e)s. Le Dr Robert Gourdeau est né à Québec en 1920. Il obtient son doctorat en médecine de l’Université Laval en 1944. Après un séjour dans les forces armées, il s’établit à Saint-Quentin, N.-B., en 1947, où il pratique durant sept ans et dirige un hôpital qu’il avait contribué à construire. En 1953, il déménage à Montréal et se spécialise en pédiatrie et en hématologie au Montreal Children’s Hospital. Il obtient son diplôme d’Associé du Collège Royal des médecins et chirurgiens du Canada en 1957 et son certificat d’hématologie de la Corporation professionnelle des médecins du Québec en 1960. Par la suite, il devient professeur adjoint de pédiatrie à McGill. En 1969, il retourne à Québec comme directeur de la pédiatrie au Centre hospitalier universitaire de Laval (CHUL) où il crée avec des collègues, le département de pédiatrie du CHUL qu’il dirige jusqu’en 1973, avant d’assumer le poste de directeur médical jusqu’en 1976. Il fut également nommé directeur du département de pédiatrie à l’Université Laval entre 1971-1974 et celui de directeur de la formation médicale continue à l’université jusqu’en 1980. De 1980 à 1986, il occupe le poste de directeur des Affaires des Associés au Collège Royal des médecins et chirurgiens du Canada à Ottawa. Le docteur Gourdeau a aussi consacré beaucoup de son temps bénévolement pour la profession médicale. Il a été secrétaire de l’Association des pédiatres du Québec pendant dix ans, membre fondateur et trésorier de la FMSQ, président de l’Association médicale du Québec (1972), président de l’Association médicale canadienne (1977), vice-président du Conseil des affaires sociales et de la famille du Québec et membre fondateur de la Société canadienne de bioéthique médicale. Il a également été rédacteur en chef de la Vie médicale au Canada français de 1976 à 1980, ainsi que des Annales du Collège royal de 1982 à 1990. He obtained his medical degree at Universite Laval in 1944. Following a stint in the armed forces, he moved to St. Quentin, N.B., in 1947, to establish his family medicine practice, where he also helped build and administered the local hospital. In 1953, he moved to Montreal to further his medical studies as a specialist in pediatrics and hematology at the Montreal Children's Hospital. He was certified in pediatrics by The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1957, and obtained his certificate in hematology, in 1960, from the Corporation professionnelle des medecins du Quebec. He was associate professor of pediatrics at McGill University until his return to Quebec City in 1969, as head of pediatrics at the Centre hospitalier universitaire de Laval (CHUL), a local teaching hospital. It was during this time, that he, and several colleagues, established the Department of pediatrics at CHUL, which he headed until 1973; before becoming medical director at the hospital until 1976. He was also head of the Department of pediatrics at Universite Laval from 1971-1974, and its director of continuing medical education until 1980. From 1980 to 1986, he was director of Fellowship Affairs at The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, in Ottawa. In addition to a successful career as a medical specialist, Robert Gourdeau enjoyed a very active career as a volunteer in several medical organizations. He served as secretary of the Association des pediatres du Quebec for 10 years, as a founding member and treasurer of the Federation des medecins specialistes du Quebec, as president of the Quebec Medical Association (1972), as president of the Canadian Medical Association (1977), vice-president of the Conseil des affaires sociales et de la famille du Quebec, and founding member of the Canadian Medical Bioethics Society. He has also served as editor of La Vie medicale au Canada francais from 1976 to 1980, and as editor of The Annals of the Royal College from 1982 to 1990. A memorial service celebrating the life of Robert Gourdeau will be held on Saturday, May 19th, at 13:00, at La co-cathedrale Saint-Antoine-de-Padoue, corner of de Chambly and Saint-Charles Streets, Longueuil, Quebec.
