ROSE MARIE MORRISSEAU Rose Morrisseau, 55, of 302 W. Third St., Duluth, Mn., passed away at her home Tuesday, May 1, 2001. She was born Dec. 22, 1945 in Fort Frances, Ont. Rose was raised and schooled in Couchiching First Nation. In the late 1960s, she moved to Duluth, where she held various jobs in the area and raised her family. She was predeceased by her father. Rose is survived by her mother, Eva Morrisseau of Couchiching First Nation, Ont.; five children, Scott Morrisseau and wife, Barb Gosselin, and Gerry Morrisseau, all of St. Paul, Mn., Stacey Morrisseau of Duluth, Mn., Sherry and husband, Darryl Mason, of Kilarney, Man., and Dane Morrisseau of St. Paul, Mn.; and numerous grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother, Wes Morrisseau and wife, Deb, of Barwick, Ont.; one sister, Betty Ann and husband, Leonard Walsh, of Fort Frances, Ont.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Monday, May 7, 2001 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Couchiching First Nation. Father Eugene Whyte O.M.I. officiated, with interment in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Couchiching First Nation. Visitation was held Sunday, May 6, 2001 from 7-9 p.m. at Green Funeral Home, with parish prayers offered at 7:30 p.m. led by Deacon Elmer Mainville. HELEN HYRE Helen Hyre, 93, of Rainycrest Home for the Aged, 550 Osborne St., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away at her residence Sunday, May 6, 2001. She was born to Edna (Kennett) and Ernest Angus in Emo, Ont., on March 5, 1908. Later, she lived on a homestead in Burriss, Ont. with her parents and her three siblings. Helen was united in marriage to Rollie Hyre on Nov. 14, 1931. Even as a child, she found a great joy in learning. She attended schools in Burriss, Emo, Winnipeg, and North Bay. Helen also learned to play the piano. This became useful to her in her teaching career, and she enjoyed playing in small bands for dances in the district. Helen’s career began in Burriss and Fort Frances. During nine memorable years teaching in Dance, she was to experience the devastating Dance fire. The community was moved to cabins at Pither’s Point Park, where the school pupils were taught in the “Pavillion.” Later, they returned to the community to a new school and new homes. After Rollie and Helen purchased a farm in Burriss, Helen was asked to become principal of the three-room school in Burriss. She never lost her enthusiasm for teaching. People came from miles around to enjoy her Christmas concerts. The final years of her teaching career were spent at J.W. Walker School in Fort Frances. Nothing pleased Helen more than meeting former students who would inevitably say, “Mrs. Hyre, you were the best teacher I ever had.” The retirement years were spent with her husband at their cabin on Lake Despair and in their mobile home in Florida. They enjoyed baseball, sightseeing, and pot-lucks in the park. Helen followed with interest the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to join them on holidays and birthdays. Helen was predeceased by her parents, husband, and great-granddaughter, Nina Coran; brother, Leonard Angus; and brother-in-law, Ernest Mose. She is survived by her daughter, Lyla (Ray) Coran; grandchildren, Reno (Jill) Coran, Michael (Tracey) Coran, Terri (Richard) Perron, and Diana (Barry) McTavish; great-grandchildren, Cara Coran, Jackson and Jessica Coran, Joel, Cody, and Liza Perron, and Katelyn, Jake, and Keith McTavish. She also is survived by her brother, Derward Angus and wife, Helma; sister, Anna Mose; and sister-in-law, Violet Angus. Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 9, 2001 at 10 a.m. at the Knox United Church in Fort Frances. Rev. Patrick Playfair officiated, with interment in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances. Pallbearers were Reno Coran, Richard Perron, Barry McTavish, Michael Coran, Joel Perron, and Cody Perron. HELENE (HELEN) HOCHULI Helene (Helen) Hochuli “Tante Leni,” 79, of Rainy River, Ont., passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at the Rainy River Hospital. She was born Aug. 29, 1921 in Reitnau, Switzerland to the late Jakob Hochuli and Emilie Lehmann. Helene worked as a professional cook in Switzerland before immigrating to Canada on June 4, 1964. She felt an intense desire to be reunited with her sister, Hermine, brother-in-law, Hans, and their family of 12 children who had immigrated to Canada in 1961. She loved them so much. She initially settled in the Fort Frances area at the Gerber farm. In January, 1965, she went to Rainy River to visit her friend, Vivian Smith, and “never left.” Helene and Vivian formed an abiding friendship that endured for 36 blessed years. She worked at the Rainy River Hospital with the domestic staff, and was employed there for 20 years. She also was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Rainy River. Helene enjoyed cooking, baking, and vegetable gardening. Her outstanding spirit of generosity to everyone she knew and loved was evident as Helene and Vivian’s home was always open to friends and family. Her love for Jesus Christ was evidenced in everything that she did. Helene was especially drawn to Vivian’s father, who reminded her so much of her own father who had passed away. She is survived by her sister, Hermine Gerber of Fort Frances, Ont.; numerous nieces and nephews; and her close friend and companion, Vivian Smith. She was predeceased by her parents, Jakob and Emilie; brothers, Werner, Walter, and Jakob; and sisters, Hedwig and Emilie. Funeral services were held Monday, May 7, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church. Pastors Gordon Armstrong and Mark Mast officiated, with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Rainy River. Friends visited with the family on Sunday, May 6, 2001 from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Rainy River. Pallbearers were John Gerber, Samuel Gerber, Markus Gerber, Jacob Gerber, David Gerber, and Andrew Gerber. Honourary pallbearers were Emily Unger, Emily Embury, Jeanette Armstrong, Carol Jensson, Elizabeth Ricci, and Ursula MacDonald. In memoriam donations may be made to C.S.S.M. Peacefully, with his son Jeffrey and daughter Lorraine by his side at St. Vincent's Hospital on Monday, May 7, 2001. Born in Eganville, Ontario, on January 9, 1919. He is survived by his sister Madeleine and brother Marcel (Alice) of Lachine, Quebec. Dear father to Jeffrey (Nancy Rochon) and Lorraine (Bill Hubbs), husband of Iona Rochon and special friend of the late Claire McCarthy. A special thank you to the loving and caring staff of St. Vincent's Hospital, who became his second family, who were there for him at every step of his journey. He will be missed by his three grandchildren, Eric Rochon and Carrie and Christopher Hubbs. Raymond was a long-time public servant who retired from the Department of National Defence in 1986 after thirty-seven years of loyal service. Prior to that, he proudly served his country with the Canadian Army during World War II. From his early days in grade school, he harboured a great love for Notre Dame football that saw him through his entire life. It was his passion.
