N. Duane Adams June 11, 1940 - April 13, 2001 Funeral arrangements by Regina Funeral Home Died at home in the early hours of Friday, April 13, 2001, at the age of 60 years. Duane was born in Brandon, MB, June 11, 1940. His pre-school years were spent with his mother in Alameda, SK, while his father served in the War. In 1945, the family moved to Regina. Duane attended Scott Collegiate and graduated in 1958. He was married to Carol (nee Brunskill) in December 1964. After obtaining Bachelor degrees in History and Commerce from the University of Saskatchewan, Duane pursued graduate degrees at the University of California in Berkeley. There, he obtained a Masters of Business Administration, and undertook doctoral studies in educational planning before returning to Saskatchewan in 1969. Duane believed he could make his greatest contribution through public service and his entire career reflects this choice. He dedicated his life to public service, particularly to health and social policy, for over 30 years. Duane began his early career as the Director of Research and Planning in the provincial Department of Health. He later served as Deputy Minister of Social Services from 1980-1982. From 1983-1991, Duane was Health Canada's Regional Director for medical services. From 1991-1997, he served as Deputy Minister of Health during which time he led and administered the government's commitment to health system reform and renewal. For his enduring contribution to the people of Saskatchewan, he received the 1995 Lieutenant Governor's Medal for Outstanding Public Service. Duane also created the Saskatchewan Institute of Public Policy, serving as its founding Director from 1997-1999. In this role he made significant contributions to provincial, national and international research in his fields of expertise. While officially retiring in June, 2000, Duane continued to work extensively in both an academic and government setting until his death. Duane is predeceased by his father Pat Adams; his mother Jane Margaret (nee King); his brother-in-law John Rafter. He greatly loved, and was loved, by his wife Carol; his children Christopher (Melissa) and Nikki (Burkely); his sister Faye Rafter and her children Kate and Patrick; his brother-in-law Kent (Vicki) Brunskill and their daughters Kelly (Jeremy and Aidan) and Leah; his aunts Evalyn Crossley and Lois Minielly; and numerous cousins, extended family and friends. Duane's vitality and love for life was always reflected in his insatiable curiosity and interest in people, but also in the many skills and activities that he loved. Among his many gifts, Duane will be especially remembered as a very accomplished organist and pianist, as well as a tremendous gardener and builder. Unfortunately, ill health interrupted the joyful pursuit of these activities. He was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) in early March, 2001. The family takes great comfort in the life and love Duane shared with all of us. Because of his constant sharing of love, determination, integrity and optimism, he will continue to live in the hearts of all those whom he touched. He will be very sadly missed, but most lovingly remembered. A CELEBRATION OF HIS LIFE will be held at Regina Funeral Home, Hwy #1 East, on Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at 10:00 a.m., followed by a reception. (nee Bell) To our dear Mom, on your final journey, your children Richard, Lawrence and Diana, wish you peace and happiness. All our love Mom. We'll miss you. Mom was born in Yorkshire, England on September 7, 1907, and grew up in Richmond. In England she was employed by the Astor family at Hever Castle and later by the Marquis of Zeeland. She arrived in Canada in 1926 as a member of the staff of the incoming Govenor General, Lord Willingdon. In 1929 she married Frederick Peter Cashen (deceased), also from England. Eleanor was a long time resident of New Edinburgh and for the last 25 years she made her home in Ambleside 1. Mom peacefully passed away at St. Patrick's Residence on Wednesday, April 11, 2001 surrounded by her family and the wonderful staff of St. Pat's who were her friends. Special thanks to Tracy, Leslie, Tracy, Phyllis, Darleen, Sylvie, Marguerite, Jennifer, and Mom's three special pals at St. Patrick's, Maude, Marjorie and Rolly.
