Senator On Wednesday, February 28, 2001, Senator Gildas (Gil) Molgat, husband of Allison (nee Malcom) and father of Anne and Mathurin. Born in Ste-Rose-du-Lac, Manitoba, to Adele Abraham and Louis Molgat. He served his community and his province as MLA for Ste-Rose from 1953 to 1969. Leader of the Liberal Party in Manitoba from 1961 to 1969. Member of the Senate since 1970, and Speaker of the Senate from 1994 to 2001. He was proud of his regiment, the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. He was Honorary Lt. Colonel from 1966 to 1985 and has been Honorary Colonel since 1985. He was a man of great warmth and good humour. Respected by his peers, he had friends of all ages, in all political parties and throughout the world. He loved exploring country roads, the rougher the better, and outsmarting beavers. He is survived by his brothers Andre (Luce), and Daniel, his sisters-in-law Berta, Jean, Joan and his nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents, his brothers Jean and Denis, sisters-in-law Germaine and Jacqueline, and brothers-in-law Bud and Jim. Funeral Service will be held at Saint-Boniface Cathedral, Manitoba on Monday, March 5, 2001 at 2 p.m. Interment Ste-Rose-du-Lac. Dr. Alexander Allen. On Sunday, February 25, 2001, at the Mount Sinai Hospital. Born in Edmonton in 1919, he was associated at various times with the University of Alberta, the National Research Council, The Royal Canadian Corps of Signals McGill University, The Pulp and Paper Research Institute of Canada and Concordia University. He had been a resident of Montreal since 1946. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Armstrong Robertson and by his sister Margaret Boorman, both of whom provided him with love, inspiration, and support beyond measure. Died 26 February, 2001 of heart failure, aged 55 years. She is survived by one brother, Peter, of Ottawa. Beset by ill health for the last decade and unable to work, she derived much pleasure and a sense of contributing, by volunteering with a large number of organizations and activities. Especially dear to her were Opera Lyra, the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival, and the Heart Institute, whose excellent care prolonged her life through two heart surgeries. Thanks are due to her longtime family practitioner Dr. Maureen Stewart, her cardiologist Dr. Joel Niznick and Dr. Ross Davies and the staff of the Heart Institute.
