A born teacher, Ellen introduced countless numbers of young children in Montreal, to the joys of reading during her years working for the PSBGM. Ellen was a dynamo-vital, energetic, creative and at all times, gracious. Her family and friends are saddened at their loss but give thanks that Rita is now free of the physical limitations of recent years. She died at the Ottawa Hospital, Civic Campus on the morning of Saturday, January 20, 2001. She is survived by her sisters Irene (the late Brian L. Brown) and Alice (the late Cecil Gorman); her nieces Lynda (John Pike), Elona (Peter Brown); one great niece Lindsay Brown and her longtime friend, Mary Hackett. Born and baptised in Lunenburg, N.S., Rita was a life-long Ottawa resident. During WWII Rita joined the Red Cross Volunteer Corps, serving in the Blood Donor Service in Ottawa, and in British (mainly Scottish) hospitals. She was an active member of St. George's Anglican Church. Many centretown residents and visitors enjoyed the church rose beds which she tenderly cultivated for almost forty years. She is predeceased by sisters Doris (George H. Shaw) and Florie (infant). Special thanks to the compassionate caregivers who served her at Rideau Place and Colonel By Residences, and who ensured that during her stay at the Civic Campus she was always surrounded by love and attention. Also thanks to the medical and nursing staff on Floor 2A. Friends are invited to share our loss and to celebrate Rita's life by calling at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, on Monday, January 22, 2001 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be held at St. George's Anglican Church, 152 Metcalfe Street, on Tuesday, January 23, 2001 at 10:30 a.m. Interment Beechwood Cemetery.
