We cherish the time you spent with us. Your quick laugh and witticisms were exceptionally heart-warming. We remember your charisma and your ability to get along well with everyone. We take comfort in the knowledge you are rejoining your father, John; your mother Mary; your brothers, Samuel, Ralph, Mike, Frank, and Billy; your half-sister, Bessie Andy; son, Samuel; and daughter, Miranda. And while it grieves us, we know that you have gone to a better place. We will miss you and honour the memories we have of you. Father James Panikulam and Steven Keesick officiated, with interment in the Big Island First Nation Cemetery. Pallbearers were Issac Big George, Albert George, Robert Handorgan, James Comegan, Carl Big George Jr., and John Gibbons. Honourary pallbearers were Fred Kelly, Peter Kelly, Johnny Comegan, Lawrence Gibbons, and Leonard Morrison. Allen’s family would like to kindly thank Dr. Singleton, the nurses, paramedics, and staff at Rainy River Hospital and Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre for their quick response and professionalism in dealing with our family’s crisis.

MARLES MATHEWSON Today we lost a very special person, Marles Mathewson, 58, who passed away at McKellar Hospital in Thunder Bay, Ont. peacefully with her family by her side. Marles is survived by her husband, Darwin; daughter, Sheila (Kaarlo) Viljanen; son, Shane (Marilyn) Mathewson; daughter-in-law, Lynn (Curt) Perrier; and six grandchildren, Ryan and Tyler Viljanen, Eric Mathewson, Adam Schutte, and Marilyn and Ashley Davis. Also surviving are one sister, LaDonna Klem; three brothers, Buzz (Marlene) McGauley, Ralph (Doris) McGauley, and Dennis (Lorraine) McGauley; and several nieces, nephews, and foster children. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends Thursday, June 1, 2000 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Jenkens Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held Friday, June 2, 2000 at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of the Jenkens Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations to the Diabetes Association would be greatly appreciated.

WAYNE MELVIN LEE In loving memory of Wayne Melvin Lee, 50, of Fort Frances, Ont., who passed away at home after a courageous and patient battle with cancer with his family at his side. Wayne leaves behind his wife, Donna; mother, Audrey Swanton; daughters, Tracey (Kyle) and Aimee (Greg); special friend, Sherri (Helseth) Potter; grandchildren, Randi-Rae and Justin Lee; brothers, Brian (Janet) and Doug (Patty Ann); stepbrother, Don (Bev) Swanton; stepsister, Lynn (Jim) Kafes; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Gordon; stepfather, Red; brother, Garry; paternal grandparents, Alma and Edward Lee; maternal grandparents, Ethel Mae and Stan Hyatt; niece, Whitney Ann Crowe; and nephew, Freddie Crowe. Wayne was a graduate of Fort Frances High School. Most of his working years were in Quesnel, B.C. in a variety of mechanical positions from heavy duty equipment mechanics to small engine repairs. The longest period of employment was with E & K Backer Logging Ltd. His family returned to Fort Frances in 1995, where he immediately found employment with Badiuk Equipment, where he worked until his illness. Wayne loved the outdoors and had a great respect for nature. He enjoyed gardening at the old homestead in Black Hawk, and took great pride in sharing his harvest with others. He also enjoyed spending a lot of time at the “old house” in Alexandria Bay. He loved to fish and hunt, and thoroughly took pride in sharing his fishing and hunting stories with his friends. Wayne also loved to snowmobile and was the best advertising Badiuk Equipment could have had. He was a true and blue Skidoo man. Most of all, Wayne’s great love of all these things were shared with his grandchildren, Randi-Rae and Justin. Friends visited at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances, Ont. on Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000 from 7-9 p.m. A memorial service was held Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000 at 10 a.m. at the Couchiching Bingo Hall on Highway 11 east of Fort Frances. Pastor Garth Clifford officiated, with cremation at Riverside Crematorium in Thunder Bay, Ont. Honourary pallbearers were Ted Beck, Bob Crowe, Nick Mainville Sr., Fred Crowe, Murray Gill, Tom Crowe, Keith Bruyere, Darrell Crowe, Doug Lee, Ray Crowe, and Brian Lee, and nephews Frank Redford, Rob Crowe, Ryan Crowe, Clinton Crowe, Gord Lee, and Nick Mainville Jr. Donations in memory of Wayne may be made to the Church of the Holy Spirit, P.O. Funeral services for Hearst resident Alain Emerilde Sylvain, 44, of 13A Ninth St. were held Nov. 29, 2001 in Mattice. He had died suddenly in Hearst, police said after his body was found. Born Oct. 20, 1957 in Taschereau, Quebec, he came to the Mattice area in 1971 and had resided in Hearst for several years. Kicknamed "Ti-cass", he worked as a cutter for Hornepayne and Hearst area woods operations. Predeceased by his father Rosario Sylvain in 1963, he leaves his mother Marie-Blanche Sylvain-Hébert and Jean Hébert, both of Taschereau, Que.. Also surviving are his sisters Claudette (Aurel) Vallière of Taschereau, Jeannine (Michel) Bélanger of Amos, and Cécile Sylvain of Preissac, Que., and Aline (Paul) Cloutier of Hornepayne, and brothers Réjean (Suzette), Raymond (Marie) and Bruno (Pauline), all of Mattice, and François of Montreal, as well as many nieces and nephews. Rev. René Grandmont officiated the service at the Église St-François-Xavier Church in Mattice. Interment will be at the St-François-Xavier Cemetery.

William Earl Sherman was born on May 8, 1914 in Neepewa, Manitoba. He was the oldest son of Thomas Niles and Sarah Sherman. He was raised on a farm for most of his growing up years in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. When dad was in his 20Õs the World War II started and dad and his brothers enlisted. Dad served overseas in Sicily and Italy. While dad was overseas in Scotland he met his wife Helen Elizabeth Morrison. They were married in 1945 in Scotland. They had a son named John who died in infancy. Dad came back to Canada to settle down in the Gilbert Plains area. He became a conductor for CN Railway, He was employed with them for 18 years. After this he became a long distance trucker for Swan River The Pas Transfer. At this time they also moved to Kamsack where dad was active in the Legion. He was a trucker until his retirement. After retirement he and mom moved to Winnipeg. Mom died in 1982 and in 1983 dad met and married Winnifred Wareing. Dad and Winnie enjoyed about 10 years together, camping, shopping and travelling. They moved to Carbon, Alberta, where they lived until Winnie passed away. Dad moved into Sunshine Lodge in Drumheller, Alberta and stayed there until he moved to Edmonton to be closer to his son Earl and family. Dad started attending the Mennonite Church in Kamsack in his 60's. And he asked Jesus into his heart at this time. He could often be seen memorizing and reciting scriptures. While dad and Winnie lived in Carbon they attended Mount Olive Evangelical Free Church in Three Hills. Dad also loved and recited poetry and to the end of his life he would recite many different poems and scriptures. Dad loved all kinds of music and had lots of fun knitting afghans and mittens for his family. Dad was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Tom, Les, Bob; and sisters, Marion, Margaret; and infant son John. He leaves behind sons Allan (Lorraine), Earl (Patsi); daughter Lynn (John); and sister Mary. He also leaves seven grandchildren and spouses, two great grandchildren. He is also survived by Winnie's children. Funeral Services were held on Friday, December 28, 2001, at 11:00 a.m. in Three Hills at Mount Olive Evangelical Free Church with Pastor Tony Hanson officiating. Peacefully at Lion's Gate Hospital North Vancouver our dearly loved Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother passed away at age 98 after a short illness. Born in England June 21, 1903 one of eight children of Anne Isabella and David Stuart, she was predeceased by her loving husband Kenneth, son Ronald and all of her sisters and brothers. She leaves to cherish her memory daughter Eleanor Parmelee and son William (Bill) Crossley, beloved grandchildren Geoffrey (Carol) Parmelee, Margot (Glen) Butler, Gail (Sam) Lenarduzzi, Sandra Parmelee, Nancy (Brett) Bandy, Lynda (Colin) Brown, Daniel (Corrine) Crossley. Great-Grandchildren Maya Bandy, Ryan Parmelee and Austin Crossley. Mollie emigrated with her family from England as a child and lived most of her life in Ottawa where she was a devoted member of St. John's Anglican Church, a choir member for 40 years and an untiring worker for her church. Sister-in-law Betty Stuart, many nieces and nephews and many friends fondly remember her. All who knew "Nana" loved her, she will be sadly missed and always in our hearts. Peacefully at home, in his 64th year, after a fierce, 13 year battle with lymphoma, surrounded by the family he loved so dearly. His fighting spirit will inspire us for generations. There are so many people to thank for their generosity and dedication but none worked as tirelessly and valiantly as his wife of 37 years, Monique Verdier. She supported him throughout the course of the illness and ensured that he passed with dignity and comfort in their home. Passed away peacefully in her eighty-eighth year at the Rockyview Hospital, loving wife of the late Leslie Lewery. Violet was born in Montreal on April 20, 1913 and moved to Calgary in 1976. At her passing she resided at Southwood Nursing Home. She is the loving mother of Beverley (Robert) Mann, Carole (Walter) Bashucki and Susan (Wayne) Youngward. Besides her daughters, she leaves to cherish her memory eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Leslie in 1974 and by one daughter Joyce Meldrum in 1966. Funeral services will be held at Leyden's Funeral Home, "Chapel of Remembrance" (17th Avenue and 2nd Street SW) on Saturday, November 3, 2001 at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Donald Shields officiating. B.Eng., M.Eng., Ph.D., P.Eng. At age 44, after a valiant fight with cancer. A graduate of Canterbury High School and Carleton University Alan began his career at the Dockyard Research Establishment Atlantic in Halifax. He also worked at Acres Consulting Services Ltd. in Niagara Falls and was a post-doctoral fellow and employee of the Materials Technology Laboratory of Natural Resources Canada. After completing a research associateship at Carleton University he started his own company, OMNIS in 1993. Much loved husband and research partner of Moyra (McDill). Very, very proud father of Sarah, Andrew and Carolyn. Dear son of Lorna and Leonard Oddy. Cherished grandson of Lillian (the late Stanley) of Winnipeg and the late Janet and Angus Cameron. Brother of Patricia (Bruce Boyd), Douglas (Yolond), Susan (Randy Scott) and Catherine (Brian Kelly). Uncle and sandcastle builder for Brian, Alan, Steven, Tina, Cameron, Lee, Chris, Kenneth, Jeffrey, Nicholas, Scott, Samantha, Christine and Elizabeth. Rev. Dr. Peacefully in Lakefield, Ontario after a lengthy illness. Born in 1908 of Irish immigrant stock, he was the devoted son of the late Mary Florence (Cochrane) of Millbrook and Joseph Albert Porter of the Porter Store, Lakefield and beloved brother of the late Helen Church. His boyhood years were spent attending Lakefield schools and driving the delivery wagon for his father, playing baseball and performing in local plays. He received his M.A. & B.D. from Queen's University followed by post graduate studies at New College Edinburgh. In 1935 he married Caroline Usborne (McLaren) of Forester's Falls with whom he raised four children and served six parishes until her death in 1973. In over fifty years of ministry, he served the United Church of Canada in the pastoral charges of Apsley, Canton, St. Paul's - Milton, St. Paul's - Avenue Road, Toronto, St. Mark's - Scarborough and Woodford - Annan pastoral charge. For five years he was a R.C.A.F. chaplain, during W.W.II and was Superintendent of Home Missions for the United Church Ottawa - Montreal Conference. He concluded as Minister Emeritus in Lakefield United Church and Chaplain of Lakefield Legion. His retirement years were happily shared with Cora Merle (Crawford) of Lakefield whom he married in 1976 ending with her death in 1999. He is survived by his four children; Sheila (M.M. "Bud" Smith) of Ottawa, Anne Paris (Rev. Hugh Pratt) of Buffalo, Ian Porter of Halifax (late Alice Boyd) and Helen (Gary Hophan) of Toronto. Beloved grandfather of 13 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Brother-in-law of Tom Church of Vancouver and Jean McLaren of Renfrew. Loving uncle of Mary Greiner of Deep River, Gordon Church of Calgary and David Church of Vancouver. Friends will be received at the HENDREN Funeral Home, Lakefield, on Tuesday November 13, 2001 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Celebration of Gordon's life will be held at Lakefield United Church, Regent St., on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. Rev. George Addison officiating. Interment at Lakefield Cemetery. If so desired, memorial donations to Mission & Service Fund of Lakefield United Church, Queen's Theological College, Kingston or Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, would be appreciated by the family. Royal Canadian Legion Br. 77 will hold a service at the funeral home on Tuesday at 7 p.m. "Well done, good and faithful servant."

MARIE TOEWS PENNER Marie Toews Penner was born Feb. 7, 1916 in Steinbach, Man., the fifth of nine children born to Klaas R. and Amelia (Borkowsky) Toews. The family farm where she grew up, north of Steinbach, is the present site of the Mennonite Heritage Village. After the family moved to Steinbach, they continued spending the summers on the farm. Her early education was at Clearsprings School and later in Steinbach. In 1936, she married William Penner. They moved to Colenso, Ont. in 1949 and then to Kenora, Ont. in 1966. After her husband suffered a stroke in the 1970s, they began spending the winters in Yuma, Arizona, where they made many good friends. In 1986, they moved back to Steinbach to Fernwood, and many times she expressed how grateful she was for her wonderful friends and family here. Marie was gifted by the Lord to use her home and hospitality to serve the needs of pastors, missionaries, neighbours, and family. Her church was vitally important to her. Her Bible and Christian books sustained her in times of loneliness and grief, and joy. Marie also was admired for her beautiful crafts, knitting, and crocheting. She donated many useful articles to the Ladies Mission Society, and to people less fortunate. Her quiet concern for others endeared her to all of us. For a number of years, she was committed to canvassing in Fernwood for the Association for Community Living. Marie is survived by two sisters, Elvina Loewen (Dave) of Steinbach, Man., and Rosalind Reimer (Clarence) of Seattle, Wash.; two daughters, Sylvia Smuland (Alvin) and Marilyn Landry (Gus); four grandchildren, Brad Smuland (Sarah), Kimberley Purscel (Dave), Shane Beckett (Kari-Lynn), and Aaron Beckett (Paula); and five great-grandchildren, Joshua Smuland, Samuel and Matthew Purscel, and Hayley and Jayla Beckett. She was predeceased by her parents, Klaas and Amelia Toews; husband, William; six sisters, Minna Reimer, Elizabeth Friesen, Anne Peters, Elma Rempel, and Romelda Toews; and one brother, Johnny Toews. She had a special place in her heart for Colleen and Raymond Coté, to whom she was “Grannie.” Funeral services were held at Cornerstone Bible Church in Steinbach, where she has been a member, on Tuesday, March 27, 2001 at 2 p.m., with viewing prior to the service. A viewing also was held at Loewen Funeral Chapel in Steinbach on Monday, March 26, 2001 from 7-8 p.m. Should friends so desire, donations in her memory may be made to the Association for Community Living.

RODNEY ALPIN (BUZZ) McGAULEY Born in Emo, Ont., and raised and educated in Barwick, Ont., Rodney met and married the love of his life and best friend, Marlene (McRitchie) of Fort Frances on March 30, 1963. In his early years he was employed as a bartender at various local hotels and latterly by Saskatchewan Pool #6 as a grain inspector, retiring in 1995, following twenty six years of service. Rodney is survived by his wife Marlene; daughter Tammy; two sons, Robert and Rodney; four grandchildren, Nickol, Jesse, Dayna, Lucritia; sister LaDonna Klem of Fort Frances; two brothers, Ralph (Doris) of Oakville, Ont., and Dennis (Lorraine) of Thunder Bay; brother-in-law, Darwin Mathewson of Thunder Bay. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews and cousins. Rodney was predeceased by his parents, Ralph and Iris; sister, Marles Mathewson; daughter-in-law, Angel McGauley; brother-in-law, Fred Klem. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 28, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, officiated by Rev. Lloyd Ivany. Interment will take place in Barwick at a later date. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Rodney’s memory to The Lung Association or to the Northern Cancer Research Foundation.
