KNEELAND, ELSIE MURIEL - The death of Elsie M. Kneeland, wife of the late Frederick Kneeland occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital after a rather brief illness. Born in Saint John, she was the daughter of the late James and Hermina (Heys) Rossiter. Elsie lived most of her life in West Saint John. She worked at the DVA Hospital for many years in the Operating Room Pack Room. Elsie was a member of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish. She kept busy, knitting and crocheting for family, and was an avid reader. Elsie's family was the center of her existence; she idolized her children and grandchildren; she will be truly missed by all her family and friends. Elsie is survived by two daughters, Nancy Kneeland, Halifax, NS and Patricia Watters (Dan), Dartmouth, NS, two grandchildren Danielle and Andrew Watters. She is predeceased by two brothers Barnard and Lloyd Rossiter, four sisters Matilda Chipman, Beatrice Walsh, Gladys Hulme and Margaret Frazee. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visiting on Sunday 2-4, 7-9 PM. ATKINSON, William Stewart (Bill) Passed away peacefully at the age of seventy-one years, after a courageous battle with cancer. Husband, lover and lifelong friend to Patricia Ann (Pat). Bill was predeceased by his daughter Cathy, his twin brother Robert George and his sister Anna Mundy and was a loving brother to Helen and Caulus Cummins and Alvin and Violet Blair. Barb and Jay Stanford, also Larry, Teri, Bob and Juliet will miss the love and support of their wonderful father. The grandchildren, Stuart and Grant miss their #1 fan, Christy and Tyler, the phone calls and cuddles, Ben, Kevin and Cole, the quiet times on his lap. They will all miss Granddad's laugh and special times by the pool. Bill was a retired employee of Air Canada and the family wishes to extend many thanks to our wonderful family and friends from all accross the country for their love and support during this time. Special thanks to the staff of the Montreal General Palliative Care Unit and the West Island Palliative Care Facility for their loving kindness. Allan E. Marttila 1962-2004 Marttila - It is with great sorrow that the family announces the sudden passing of “Boobie” Allan Edward Marttila at the age of 41 years. Allan was predeceased by his father Donald Marttila, his brother Donnie Marttila and his step-father Richard Deslaurier. He will be sadly missed by his mother Yvonne Deslaurier, his sisters Debbie (Gary) of King Kirkland, Sheryl Wilson (James) of Kirkland Lake, Kelly Burak (John) of Kirkland Lake, his brother Ritchie Deslaurier of Kirkland Lake, and his children Cassandra Doty and Jordon Marttila of Kirkland Lake; his step children Angela, Roger and Tara. SIMPSON, George Charles It is with deep sadness we announce the death of George Charles Simpson, dear loving husband of Theresa (Ryan) Simpson; devoted loving father of his daughter Patricia Dunn and her husband Gary and to his son, Thomas Simpson. Loving grandfather of Bill, Joe, Dan, Gary, Dean, Derek and Christopher. Loving great grandfather of Tyler, Emily and William, Lydia and Winter. George is survived by his sister Marjory Evans and her husband Ralph of London and his sister-in-law Marion Simpson of Sarnia. Predeceased by his sweet little granddaughter Katherine Judge, by his brother Herbert Simpson, his sister-in-law Alice Ryan, his brothers-in-law Maurice Ryan and Ewart Wilson. George bravely served his country during WWII as a pilot officer completing 37 missions as a tailgunner on 4 engine bombers. He was a very active member of the Bomber Community during recent years. A 50 year member of Duchess of Kent Legion. He truly enjoyed his almost 30 years with Greyhound Lines of Canada. His driving skills taking him through Canada and the United State. He will be fondly remembered by all family members, nieces, nephews and cousins and by his many friends who all enjoyed his great generosity, kindness, joy and laughter. EDWARDS, Margaret Ruth Rocked in the arms of Hurricane Charlie and carried home by the final breaths of Frances, Margaret Ruth Edwards returned to her beloved Canada and died surrounded with the love and devotion of her family. Together with her husband and family in Florida, she battled her illness each step of the way and died with courage and dignity. Beloved wife of Kent Edwards, now of Windsor, Ontario; much loved mother and grandmother to Karen and Mike Johnstone and their children Nicholas Ryan, Zachary Keegan and Benjamin Patrick of Oromocto, New Brunswick; to Robin Edwards and Dr. Angela Carol and their children Ruadhan Palmer and Riel Kent of Ancaster, and to David Edwards and Sarah Gireau and their son Tom Aidan of Toronto. Mother-in-law to Joseph De Koning of Kitchener, Ontario. Dear sister-in-law to Ralph and Cory Edwards and Joan Klagus and Bill Watters all of Brantford, and to Al Edwards and Gerry Sibbick of Cold Lake, Alberta. Remembered by her nieces and nephews Scott, Blake, Trevor, Paul, Kevin, and Catharine. Recently predeceased by her beloved daughter Alison, they are now reunited in love and in peace forevermore. RUDLING, Margaret Marie R.N. (nee Drouillard) Her beautiful mind left us long ago and now her pain & suffering has come to an end. Her gentle spirit will remain a part of all of us. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife and mother, Margaret, at home at the age of 84. Loving wife of Walter for 62 years. Devoted mother of John & wife Barbara, Judy, Wally & wife Lise. Her grandchildren: Dawn & John Stefani, Wally Rudling & Sherry Siergjuk, Heidi Reitzel & Kevin Morse, Kristi Rudling, Greg Reitzel & Nicole Warnock were greatly influenced by their grandmother's love. She leaves behind her sister & best friend Dorothy Obudzinski & husband Edward, brothers Norman Drouillard & wife Corrine, Gerald Drouillard & wife Pat, and predeceased by sister Alma & brother Donald. She is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, & godchildren. Margaret graduated from Hotel Dieu School of Nursing in 1943, where she began her nursing career. She later returned to nursing and accepted a position in the nursery. She was Head Nurse on nights for 25 years. Long before NICU was established, Margaret worked solely in premature nursery. She proudly cared for all of her grandchildren as they were born. She served on many committees and enjoyed many friendships. She will be sadly missed by all whose lives she touched. Richard Gould Gould - In loving memory of Richard Gould, who passed away suddenly at the age of 70 at his late residence. Richard was born in Matheson and raised in the Hamilton area. He moved to Barry’s Bay with his family as a young adult and spent many happy years there, before relocating to Kirkland Lake in 2004. Richard was predeceased by his father Jay and two brothers, Douglas and Robert. He is survived by his wife Olive of Beamsville. Dad will be sadly missed by his children, Mark (Kerri) of Kempville, Jay (Selena) of Kirkland Lake and Cheryl Boudreau (Ben) of Beamsville. He is also survived by his mother Edith, brothers Jack, Glenn and Keith and sisters Marion and Carolyn and six grandchildren. Richard loved working with his hands and could fix anything. He loved to make people laugh and was especially wonderful with children and animals. Cremation followed the decease. In keeping with his wishes, there was no funeral or visitation. Doris (McKenzie) Weir 1918-2004 The family announces the death of Doris at South Centennial Manor in Iroquois Falls, at the age of 86 years. McBURNEY, Ralph Edward. Passed away, peacefully in Ottawa, Canada in his 99th year. Air Vice-Marshal McBurney, CBE, CD, enjoyed several careers during his lifetime, the first being that of an officer in the RCAF from 1924 to 1952. During his initial years in the RCAF he flew out of various locations in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, the Yukon and the Northwest Territories and was engaged in forest fire patrols, search and rescue and aerial photography for strip mapping. From 1939 to 1942 he was Director of Signals at Air Force Headquarters in Ottawa and was promoted to Group Captain in October 1941. In 1943 he was Commanding Officer of RCAF Station Trenton (Ontario). In the same year Group Captain McBurney was posted to England where he commanded conversion, training and operational bomber organizations. He served as Commanding Officer RAF Station Dishforth and Base Commander 61 Base Topcliffe. Now an Air Commodore, in 1944 he formed and became Base Commander of 64 Base, Middleton, St. George, an operational base for Lancaster and Halifax Bombers. From December 1944 to June 1945 he was Senior Air Staff Officer under Air Vice-Marshal McEwan at Headquarters No. 6 (RCAF) Bomber Group and was responsible for flying operations of 11 stations, 14 squadrons, 4 training units and over 300 bomber aircraft. In August 1945 he formed RCAF Maintenance Command and became Air Officer Commanding of this organization, his promotion to Air Vice-Marshal following in September 1945. In July, 1945 he was awarded Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). He served as President, RCAF War Crimes Court at RCAF Overseas Headquarters in March and April 1946, at which time he also visited the War Crimes Trials in Nuremburg, Germany. Air Vice- Marshal McBurney formed the Canadian Joint Liason Office in London, England and served as Senior Canadian Liason Officer from July 1946 to June 1948. He was Air Officer Commanding Air Material Command from August 1948 to January 1952 and retired from the RCAF in that year. His civilian career began in 1952 when he joined Rogers Majestic, which later was taken over by Philips Industries, Ltd. He managed the defence equipment division of the company until 1959. Between 1960 and 1972 he was Chief, Technical Information Service, National Research Council of Canada. He ended his civilian career as President of the International Federation for Documentation from 1968-1972. He remained bright and lucid in his later years and had a phenomenal memory. That, together with memorabilia that he had collected and retained, particularly from the twenties and thirties, enabled him to be of great assistance to authors writing of the formative years of the RCAF. He was an excellent speaker and entertained many veterans groups as well as his children and grandchildren with talks, often over an hour in length. How many others could tell of what it was like to fly in the early years in open cockpit planes over vast, uninhabited expanses of Canada's wilderness, of rescuing a trapper who had cut off his leg, of parachuting into poison ivy at Camp Borden, what the stage door canteens really were all about, and visiting Hitler's destroyed offices in Berlin. The Air Vice-Marshal, as he was known fondly among his family, was predeceased by his daughter Katherine Biolley and is survived by his wife for 72 years, Gertrude; his sons Peter (Diane) and David (Judi); son-in-law Marcel; grandchildren Scott (Nicole), Tracy (Cody) and Brad; and great-grandchildren Liam, Andrew and Ian. A Memorial Service followed by a reception will be held in several weeks at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Avenue at Richmond Road, Ottawa. SOWERY, Frederick Charles. It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Frederick Charles Sowery. Fred was born on October 26, 1908 in Dorset, England and came to Canada in 1910. He is predeceased by his loving wife Charlotte Beatrice Flood and by his brothers Albert, Edward, John, Archibald, Clifford and Robert and sisters Florence and Mabel. Fred joined the CPR Railroad, Cartage Department in 1938 and later was District Chairman of Local 29 of the Brotherhood of Railway, Airline and Steamship Clerks, Freight handlers, Express and Station Employees. In later years he served as Vice General Chairman of the territory covering Quebec, the Maritimes and Newfoundland. Fred was a gentleman with a great sense of humor and was loved and respected by those who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his son Denman (Denny) and his wife Diane, his daughter Liane Ross and grandson Geoffrey Ross. Sadly missed by his brother Stanley and many nieces and nephews. Survived by her son Edward (Jeannette), daughter-in-law Marion Grzadka, grandchildren Myra Cox (Darren), Richard Grzadka (Bonita), great grandchildren Ryan and Curtis Cox, Stephane and Andre Grzadka, one sister, Julia, in Poland and many nieces and nephews here and abroad. Anna arrived in Canada May 31, 1929 at the age of twenty-four and was married to Walter June 6, 1934 in Montreal, PQ. In her younger years Anna was very active in the Polish Club, Bratnia Pomoc, in Pt. St. Charles, receiving a bronze medal for her work with children. RILEY, Leo, To my family and friends, Forgive me for leaving the party early. LEON, Edward Peacefully at home in Waterloo, surrounded by family and friends, after a courageous three year battle with cancer, in his 68th year. Born and raised in Westmount, Cape Breton, Ed is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marilyn (Bain). Much loved father of Donna (Richard Millen) of Ottawa, Bruce (Dani Martin) of Kitchener and Nancy (Dan Johnson) of Sudbury. Adoring Papa to Matthew and Christopher Millen, Kyle and Kayla Leon and Andrew, Brandon and Caitlin Johnson. Predeceased by his parents Joseph and Frances. Ed also leaves behind his brothers Joe (Patsy), Dennis (Mary), Roger (Eva) and his sister Charlotte Reid, all of Sydney, Nova Scotia. Ed was a skilled cook and a wonderful friend and colleague to many in Cape Breton, Elliot Lake and Waterloo. His sense of humour and goodwill toward others will be missed, but not forgotten. BARCLAY, Florence Gertrude Jean (nee Sheil) Peacefully in her apartment at Garden Terrace, aged 85, after a lifetime of happiness caring for her families, friends, and community. Predeceased by her beloved husband Lloyd Winston Barclay, half-brothers Percy and Owen, half-sisters Maude (Scott) and Marjorie (Curtis), brother Nelson and sister Olive (Topps), and grandson Colin Harris. Survived by brothers John, Keith, and York Sheil, and by sisters Ida (Johnson) and Linda (Soward), as well as sons Barry and Bruce Barclay and daughter Barbara Raeburn. Deeply missed by her grandchildren Elizabeth and Joseph Raeburn, Emily Barclay, and William, Asia, and Thera Barclay, and now sadly absent from the future of her new granddaughter Hannah Graham. When her mother died suddenly in 1934, 14-year-old Florence Sheil assumed her mother's place in the farmhouse as the only cook and housekeeper to her father, five brothers, five sisters, and several hired men. Against all odds, by reading until dawn, she then won her way into senior high school at Perth Collegiate and delivered unmatched academic excellence. In 1942 she won the heart of legendary schoolteacher Lloyd Barclay, and while raising their three children held increasingly responsible jobs in Ottawa. She retired as the administrative supervisor of the School of Public Administration at Carleton University in 1979. Returning to Beckwith Township, she and husband Lloyd revitalized a heritage farm and then moved to Carleton Place for the rest of their retirement years. As well as gardening and writing, Florence continued to paint in oils and became deeply involved in community activities, devoting herself untiringly to the Women's Institute and to the Women's Auxiliary of the Carleton Place Hospital. She is remembered with affection for her excellence as President of both organizations. Unsurpassed as mother, homemaker, friend, and neighbour, she cherished and loved and protected us all. She will live on as we, in her memory, pass on to our children, to our friends, and to our community the love and care she gave to hers.
