Hockey player, WWII bomber pilot, pennant-winning Little League coach and senior partner at Frazer and Otton Accounting firm. He was a hugely successful retiree: world traveller, painter, author of "A Trepid Aviator", teacher of creative writing, frustrated golfer and recent devotee of the internet. He was a great jazz fan, barbershop singer and late convert to classical music. ELIZABETH HELEN MCBRIDE Elizabeth Helen McBride, 72, of 1809 5th Ave. E., International Falls, Mn., passed away at Falls Memorial Hospital in International Falls. She was born Dec. 3, 1929 in Fort Frances, Ont. to Alex and Leona Armit. She grew up and attended school in Fort Frances. In 1948, she was united in marriage to Robert McBride and moved to International Falls. She enjoyed golf, Bingo, four-wheeling, and card playing. She also was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church. Elizabeth is survived by her husband, Robert; son, Patrick (Naomi) McBride of Hoyt Lakes; daughters, Diane (Ron) Wright of International Falls, Debbie (Keith) of Duluth, and Donna (Tom) Fairhurst of International Falls; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers, Roy Armit of Fort Frances, Richard Armit of Dryden, and David Armit of Minneapolis; and sisters, Dodie Wickstrom, Joan Krukowski, and Lynn Armstrong, all of Fort Frances. She was predeceased by her father and two grandchildren. Visitation will be held Monday, March 18, 2002 from 6-8 p.m. at the Green-Larsen Mortuary in International Falls, with vigil prayers at 6:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 19, 2002 at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas Catholic Church in International Falls. Walter (Woody) Edwin Gray Born March 23, 1922 in Toronto, Ont., Woody was the fourth and last child of the late Eva and Walter Gray. Raised in Toronto, Woody left in 1943 to join the Navy. For the next four year he worked as a Leading Stoker on the Destroyer HMCS Niagara, and Minesweeper HMCS Caraquet. On returning from war, Woody started with Ontario Hydro on construction. This turned out to be a good union as he spent the next 35 years working there as a construction supervisor, lineman and first aider, in the Northwestern Ontario Region. He married the former Florence Rose Popowich in 1952 and after several moves decided to settle in Fort Frances in 1963. “This is where I really love.” Woody’s passions were many--gardening, golf, fishing, travelling, cards, dancing, teaching First Aid for St. John’s Ambulance, and volunteering. He was awarded the Order of St. John’s, by Gov. Gen Jeanne Sauvé for his significant contribution to the humanitarian services that he performed on behalf of St. John’s. With is wife by his side they were honoured in 1991 as Fort Frances’ volunteers of the year. They are, to date, the only couple to hold this award together. During the last five years of his life, Woody valiantly battled cancer and then ALS (Lou Gherig’s Disease). His positive attitude toward his illnesses made it easy for those to be with him. Florence was the love of his life, and on Aug. 11, they were to celebrate 50 years of being together. He also loved his other girls--daughters, Georgine (Eric), Susan (John), and Bonnie (Terry). He was predeceased in 1957 by his daughter, Patricia Lynn. He was much loved and was proud of his grandchildren, Holly (Bonnie); Erika, Shannon and Cyndy (Georgine); and Curtis and Scott (Susan). He also considered himself lucky to have the love and support of Jim and Lori Pochailo. The family would like to thank both of these special people for being there when they could not. The memorial service will be held at St. John’s Anglican Church at 11 a.m Friday, Aug. 2, 2002. Luncheon to follow at The Royal Canadian Legion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John’s Anglican Church Elevator Fund. As Woody’s disease progressed, his need for wheelchair access made it imperative for him to continue those activities he loved.

Ray Hastie Peacefully, with his family at his side, Ray Hastie passed on at his daughter’s home in Winnipeg, Man. Ray was born Sept. 21, 1914 in Fort Frances, Ont., and he is survived by his wife of 63 years, Claire; daughter, Sharon Krestanowich; and son, Mark (Kris) Hastie. He also leaves grandchildren, Paul (Cory) Krestanowich, Jason Krestanowich, Lisa (Mike) Tottle, and Ryan and Reid Hastie; and great-grandchildren, Zachary Tottle and Adam Krestanowich. He was predeceased by his parents, James and Janet Hastie; and son-in-law, Dennis Krestanowich. Ray married Claire on Sept. 11, 1937 and lived in Fort Frances most of his life except for two years in Prince Rupert, B.C. and one year in southern Ontario training troops for overseas. Ray worked at the O & M paper mill until his retirement in 1979. He was very active in the Fort Frances Curling Club for many years, winning the Grand Aggregate award on several occasions as well as serving as president of the club. He and a fellow member devoted many hours to developing the high school curling program. Ray loved to bonspiel on and off the ice. He tirelessly volunteered his time and effort for many years to assist the Kiwanis Club in all their fundraising activities. He will be remembered for the numerous Sunny Cove steak frys he helped organize and the money they raised. Ray also was a member of the local Legion. Ray enjoyed Rainy Lake, spending many hours fishing and boating. All of his grandchildren have benefited from grandpa’s fishing experiences and spent many happy hours with him on the lake. Cremation has taken place, and memorial services will be held Monday, July 29, 2002 at 11 a.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances. RILEY, Leo, To my family and friends, Forgive me for leaving the party early. I have chosen not to have a standard funeral or a formal viewing because these would not be happy events ~ and I insist on leaving this world the same way I have tried to live in it ~ with smiles, joy and goodwill. My death is sad but not tragic because I have had a rich life. I have laughed, cried, loved and been loved, enjoyed the company of friends and lived my life to the fullest extent that I could. I have witnes sed the birth and life of four wonderful children: Chris (Kathie), Sue (Larry), John (Kim), and Brett (Donna). Also Wendy (Victor) and Shelly (Vito) whom I have become to love and call my own. Not to forget all my grandchildren and great-grandchildre n and my brother Robert and his family in B.C. I have treasured the many and varied friends that I have had at my side throughout my journey. There are no words to express my gratitude. No words to even say a proper 'thanks' just for being a friend. I will miss you, but I have had yet another gift of late; the time to call or talk to as many of my friends and family as possible. LEON, Edward Peacefully at home in Waterloo, surrounded by family and friends, after a courageous three year battle with cancer, in his 68th year. Born and raised in Westmount, Cape Breton, Ed is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marilyn (Bain). Much loved father of Donna (Richard Millen) of Ottawa, Bruce (Dani Martin) of Kitchener and Nancy (Dan Johnson) of Sudbury. Adoring Papa to Matthew and Christopher Millen, Kyle and Kayla Leon and Andrew, Brandon and Caitlin Johnson. Predeceased by his parents Joseph and Frances. Ed also leaves behind his brothers Joe (Patsy), Dennis (Mary), Roger (Eva) and his sister Charlotte Reid, all of Sydney, Nova Scotia. Ed was a skilled cook and a wonderful friend and colleague to many in Cape Breton, Elliot Lake and Waterloo. His sense of humour and goodwill toward others will be missed, but not forgotten.
