PATTERSON, Glenda Bernice On October 29, Glenda Bernice Patterson passed away suddenly. Born in 1944, she spent most of her life teaching in and around Edmonton. Survived by her three children: Andrea, Michael (Kerrie), Eva, her beloved new grandson, Hayden, six months, and brother Neal (Weslie), Glenda was predeceased by her parents Conrad and Hazel Patterson. She will be remembered for her lifelong love of music, sense of mischief and talent as a pianist. Glenda will be missed but, in her own words, all is well. Funeral Services will be held November 3 at 1:30 p.m. in Trinity United Church, 8810 Meadowlark Road, Edmonton, with reception to follow. PAQUIN Marie Josephe March 19, 1923 - October 29, 2009It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Marie. She was a loving mother, grandmother, aunt and friend to all she met. Predeceased by her parents, 10 siblings and her husband Lorenzo (Larry) Paquin. PHILLIPS Emily Mae (nee Kristjanson)Our beloved Emily passed away October 29, 2009 at the Cascade Hospice, Chilliwack, BC. Born September 14, 1939 in Foam Lake, Sask. She was predeceased by her parents Mundi-Emma Kristjanson, three sisters Josie, Nina and Marg. Survived by husband Jack, brothers-in-law Ed Bell and Jack Richards, sister Edna, brothers Kris (Phil), Harty (Pearl), Walt (Faye), 3 children Sandy (Jay), Mike (Jackie), Brent (Kim), 3 stepchildren Linda (Denise), Don, Dave (Amanda), sister-in-law Dorthy, brother-in-law Ron (Dolly), 14 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. As a young girl Emily grew up in Sapperton, raised her family in Coquitlam, after meeting Jack moved back to Sapperton. Em worked 23 years with Woolco/Wal-Mart Burnaby store. Soon after retiring Jack and Em moved to Chilliwack, BC. where Emily spent 10 years golfing with her husband Jack, wonderful friends in the Ladies Club and the Friday Night Social. WILLIAMS (NEE LEWIS) Mavis Madeline July 19, 1929 - October 29, 2009 It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. She is survived by her children Richard Wayne Williams, Lyle Albert Williams Sr. (Louise), Edward Mark Williams (Peggy), Roy Patrick Williams (Alice), Juanita L. Lewis, Denise Marie Bob, Elaine Ann Williams, Della Rose Williams, and Angela Joan Schorneck (Hart) sister Constance "Connie" Zagala, Robert "Bobby" Lewis, sister-in-law Dolores Lewis and aunt Stella Newman and 20 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. She will be missed by many loving relatives and dear friends. Mavis will be remembered for her unconditional love for her family and during her pastime she loved to garden. A legacy that Mavis instilled with her children was teaching them to prepare traditional food such as smoked salmon and preserves. AYRE, Earl Wesley April 30, 1927 October 30, 2009 Earl's determination to continue living his young at heart" life ended October 30, 2009, joining his loving partner and wife of 57 years, Connie, who predeceased him February 5, 2008. Youngest of nine children and born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Earl passed away surrounded by his beloved family after a lengthy physical battle due to cardiac complications. He will always be loved and never forgotten by his devoted children Clifford, Deborah, and Carin Jette (John). He will be lovingly cherished by his seven grandchildren, Angela, Amanda and Kimberly Ayre, Marc and Elizabeth Scheuer and Charles and Christina Jette. A teacher of mathematics by profession, Earl taught all who knew him how to live life to its fullest. His greatest joy was to live and travel throughout the Canadian Rockies in his motor home. His passionate involvement with the Lion's Club extended more than 30 years and he was a dedicated member of Probus Canada (Rotary Club) for over 5 years. Earl's family wish to extend their heartfelt thanks to all his caregivers as well as to Dr. Ken Smith and staff at the Victoria General Hospital for their tender care in Earl's final days. BAXTER, John Joseph October 10th 1923 October 28th 2009 John was a loving husband to Doris, devoted father to son, Warren (Elizabeth), granddaughter Sarah (Greg Cormier), great grandson Denis, granddaughter Jillian (Brandon Harvey), daughter Wendy (John Welch) and grandsons Baxter, Sam and Duncan, sisters Patricia (Myhill-Jones) and Rita (Blair Cafferky) and brother, Jim as well as his many caring nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his beloved son, Denis, and sister Marion (Ellis). Dad was born and raised in North Vancouver, B.C. He worked briefly for Boeing in Vancouver before joining the RCAF and being stationed at Patricia Bay on Vancouver Island. John married Doris, his high school sweetheart, before he joined The B.C. Electric Company in 1945. He worked from conception to completion on the High Arrow and Mica dams. Mum and Dad enjoyed their homes in West Vancouver, Westbank, Nanoose, and the Saanich Peninsula. Holidays to Mexico were a special treat. He retired early from the now B.C. Hydro after 36 years of service. Retirement for Dad was a chance to do wee" building projects, have friends in for a wee tich", and to refine the art of tomato production. We so love and miss you, Dad. WILSON, Nick June 1945 October 2, 2009 It is with great sadness and disbelief that we are announcing the death of our best friend, husband and companion, Nick Wilson of a stroke, brought on by the complications of lung, liver and brain cancer on October 2, 2009 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Comox, Nick was born in June 1945 in Worthing, England. He was predeceased by his father Leonard Hugh Wilson in 1995 and his mother Elizabeth Pye Wilson in 2006. He is survived by his long time companion Vivian Cruise and his step children Alex (Holly) and Pam (Igor) and grand children, Isaac & Margot Burstyn and Dexter Cruise. Nick is also survived by his brother in Bali: David (Gill) and their daughters Natasha and Samantha and by his sister in England: Anne (Bob Cockburn) and their children Emma (Rob Phelps with daughters Imogene and Katy) and Michael (Kim and their son Charles). Nick also leaves behind in England several other family members and his best friend and cousin Chris (Jane) Pye and their grown children: David, Joanna, Sarah, Emma & Katy Pye. Nick worked for 25 years for Seaspan as a Marine Engineer, his favourite boat being the SS Chief. He worked for other towboat companies up and down the coast as well as on the log boom boats at the pulp mill in Prince Rupert when he first arrived in Canada in 1967, then after some extensive traveling and moving to Vancouver he worked as a carpenter, a gardener and a courier. He was a cook deckhand at first but he knew that he would rather follow his schooling and be in the warm engine room tweaking the engines and keeping everything "ship shape ". Nick was a kind and gentle soul, a real gentleman and a hard working fellow. He gave generously to charities, he helped many people try to solve their problems and would stand up for his rights and any other cause that needed an assist. He loved fly fishing in the Quinsam, Seymour and Chilliwack Rivers and in the Yellowstone River in Wyoming and did a lot of saltwater fishing in the 80's up near the Green Can and the Red Buoy. In the last 10 years of traveling Nick took up snorkeling and photography again and we had many adventures in Cuba, Bali, Hawaii, New England and road trips around BC, Alberta, Montana and California. In lieu of flowers please donate to the BC Cancer Society or Covenant House in Vancouver, BC or the BC SPCA. We are eternally grateful for the wonderful care Nick received in St. Joseph's Hospital in Comox. The ER doctors and nurses were always calmly there for us in our panicky visits and the 2nd Floor nurses showed true compassion to all of us. The Physiotherapists who worked endlessly to try to bring Nick back and keep him comfortable made our lives better too. There will be a Celebration of Nick's Life on Sat., Nov. 7, 2009 from 1-4 pm at the Fanny Bay Community Hall, on the Coastal Route Hwy #19 just a few miles south of the Buckley Bay ferry terminal. Tea and sandwiches will be served along with Nick's favourite dessert: Trifle and chocolates. In keeping with his quest for more adventures his ashes are being spread in all the corners of the globe. COOKE, Glennford Leslie - Passed away on Friday, October 30, 2009 at Belleville General Hospital. Glenn was born October 18, 1938 to parents Lorraine (Poole) and Leslie Cooke. Youngest brother of Laura (Nick); predeceased by Stanley (Jan) and George. Devoted husband to Barbara (nee Stephens). Wonderful father to Darlene (Paul), Suzanne (Paul), Jennifer (Scott), Stephen and predeceased David. Loving grandfather of Corinne (James), Daniel, Shannon, Mikayla, Ethan and Tyler. Glenn grew up in the Toronto Beach area and attended Danforth Tech. He served on the Metro Toronto Police Force before entering into the printing trade. He and Barbara owned and operated Quality Decals and Labels. For many years Glenn was a loyal and active Mason and Shriner. He held successive positions, including DDGM (Deputy District Grand Master) of Toronto District 2 in 1984-1985, culminating in the final honour of being appointed Ambassador Emeritus of the Trent Valley Shrine Club. Memorial will take place on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at the Masonic Hall, 53 Front St. South, Campbellford, ON. Friends and family will be received 6:30-7 p.m. with the Memorial Service beginning at 7 p.m. officiated by Rev. Bill Manley. HANDZLIK 2009-11-01 Mr. Fred Handzlik (Bober), age 43, passed away unexpectedly on October 29th, 2009 with his family by his side. Fred had attended Twin Haven School, Avenue 2 and later graduated from Lakeview High School. He enjoyed many things in his life, such as wrestling and especially Elvis Presley. A highlight in Fred‘s life was a trip to Graceland with his nephew Ken. He touched many lives and loved to entertain everyone at every gathering, infecting everyone with his huge smile and his love. ARNOLD, Melinda (Daignault) 2009-10-31 1953-2009 It is with great sadness that her family announces the death of Melinda Arnold (nee Daignault) peacefully, in hospital, surrounded by love. She will be greatly missed by her father Ed Daignault (Sioux Lookout), her husband Ken and children Brian, Iain and Gillian as well as her brothers Larry and Ralph (Melanie) and her beloved nephews and nieces in Australia - Jake, Celine, Beth and Kasper. Melinda is survived by aunts, uncles and cousins across the country. She leaves behind her "bestest" friend Colleen Clarke and "mon ange" Julie Dupont as well as many more close, caring and loving friends. She was pre-deceased by her mother Doris. Wherever she worked she was seen as a natural leader and would be sought out as advisor and mentor to new staff arrivals - she would thereafter refer to her protégés as her "babies". She will be fondly remembered and missed by colleagues from the Port Arthur General Hospital, the Victorian Order of Nurses and the Community Care Access Centre. Her nursing career gave her the opportunity to work in the Emergency and Operating Rooms, Home Care, Case Management and most recently as Contract Manager at CCAC. Her knowledge and leadership were recognized across Ontario and she was asked to participate in many provincial teams mandated to improve the delivery of home care. Like any good mother her family was the centre of her world. She wanted and worked for the best for her children. Her children will be her legacy. Melinda believed that it was more important to live in a home rather than a house. She was fascinated by new technology and loved to be the "early adopter" of the latest development. She understood how computers "thought" not just how they worked. She had an unquenchable thirst for travel and adventure. Her trips to Europe, Central America, Australia and Hong Kong were to be just the beginning. She worked hard on her conversational French and Spanish so that she could communicate with the local inhabitants in their own language. She loved children and animals and could never understand how anyone could hurt either. In lieu of flowers donations to charities caring for children or animals would be appreciated. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 2, 2009 when family and friends will gather at St. Andrew’s R.C. Church for Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. celebrated by Rev. Luigi Filippini. SALIBA , Hassib Wade January 7, 1935 - October 31, 2009 With family by his side, it is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Hassib Saliba, on Saturday, October 31, 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer. Hassib was born in Ain Arab, Lebanon on January 7, 1935 and immigrated to Canada in 1957, to later marry his wife Nouhad in 1961. Hassib spent forty years as a pipefitter working for Canadian Pacific Railway. In his spare time, and throughout retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family, barbequing, babysitting his grandchildren, spending time in his garage and hunting. He will be missed by many and will always be remembered for his big moustache and even bigger heart. Besides his loving wife, Nouhad, Hassib is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law; Louie (Maryana), Wade (Tammy), George (Anna), John (Laura) and Val; twelve grandchildren; sisters Adibe, Hanni, Soumaya, Adibe and brothers Sajih, George and Adib. Hassib was predeceased by his son Mike, and sisters Mary and Shakeeba. They spent their married life first in Lethbridge, then Vancouver and finally settled in New Westminster in the 50's. Joan is survived by her loving children Irene, Dorothy, Ed (Sandra), Doug (Helen), Fred, May (Melvin), Jeanette, Pinky (Jim), daughters-in-law Lil and Rose and son-in-law Michael; her granddchildren Ernest (Kelly), Desmond, Jeremy, Graham, Eric, Darrell (Jennifer), Robin, Jason, Danny (Maxine), Donna (Ken), Vincent (Amanda), Arthur (Esther), Gavin, Asa, Glenn, Diane (Seem), Rick, Bobbi, Karen (Alan), Judy (Paul), Nora, Adam (Winsie), Rita, Kerry (Pam), and Sandra; also 32 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. SHERMAN , Marjorie Agnes (Crysler) (1922 - 2009) Beloved wife of the late Gordon K. Sherman, passed away after a brief illness October 29, 2009 at the Rockyview Hospital in Calgary. Marjorie is survived and will be sadly missed by her beloved children, Nancy (Steve), John (Karen) of Calgary and Paul (Corinna) of Kelowna and also her dear grandchildren, Jennifer, Shauna, Ryan, Alissa, Justin, Tania, Christina and Laura. Marjorie grew up in Port Colborne, Ontario and in 1951 was married to Gordon, a banker with CIBC. They subsequently enjoyed their transfers to various locations in Canada and the enduring friendships made along the way. Their last move was from Halifax to Calgary in 1973 which became their established home with family and friends close by. Marjorie had a keen interest in crafts and enjoyed golfing and outdoor activities. Over the years she donated her time generously to charitable organizations and was a faithful member of Holy Nativity Anglican Church and the Southwest Seniors' Club. In her later years Marjorie enjoyed regular outings with friends to Horton Road Royal Canadian Legion, the CPO, movies and theatre. Memories of Marjorie's vibrant spirit and kind devotion to family and friends will always be cherished. Il était le frère de: feu Jean-Yves (feu Pauline Savard), Jeannine (feu Armand Gagnon, Guy Lajeunesse), Jacqueline (Bernard Bonneau), Normand (Henriette Gagnon), Ghislain (Thérèse Grenon), Marcel (Marcelle Tremblay), feu Roch-André, Jacques (Nicole Pépin), Diane (Gaston Martel), Lise (feu Julien Noël, Claude Dion) et Colette Paré. Il était le gendre de feu Pierre Thibeault (feu Léontine Bédard); le beau-frère de: Pierrette Thibeault (Ghislain Boivin), Céline Thibeault (feu Yvon Belley), Lise Thibeault (feu Eddy Wagner), Doris Thibeault (Bertrand Laberge), Danielle Thibeault (Jean-Yves Marquis). Également, il laisse ses neveux et nièces et de grands amis: Rosario Boivin et Rolande Robitaille, Henri-Paul Fournier et Rose-Hélène Gagné. Il était Chevalier de Colomb 4e degré et a été Grand Chevalier. Il était membre de l'équipe de la pastorale de Roberval et ministre de la communion. YOUNIE, Margaret Mary (nee Corbett) June 19, 1915 - October 28, 2009 After a brief illness, Margaret passed away at the University of Alberta Hospital on October 28, 2009. She was born in Ottawa, the youngest of five children. She was predeceased by her husband William (Brick) Younie in 1988; by her parents Joseph and Mary Corbett; by her brothers John, George and Hugh Corbett. She is survived by her children Janet Nesby of Sherwood Park, David Younie of Sherwood Park and Doug Younie of Edmonton; by her grandson Jeff Nesby of Sherwood Park; by her brother Charles Corbett of Amherstburg, Ontario; and by her namesake and special dog Corby. Margaret lived life with enthusiasm and curiosity. She had a smile for everyone and charmed people of all ages. As an adolescent in Ottawa, she walked Prime Minister MacKenzie King's dog. Her father was an accomplished athlete and she had four older brothers. Her interest in sports was inevitable. She was an avid curler for many years. As a youngster of 74 in the spring of 1990 she stood in line for hours to buy Oilers playoff tickets. Her patience in line was exceeded by her enthusiasm during the games. Her natural charm and easy friendliness caused people to open up to her. She also provided a shoulder to cry on. She had an ability to say just the right thing to make people feel a bit better. Reverend John Hesse will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at Assumption Catholic Church, 9040 - 95 Avenue, Edmonton, at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 5, 2009. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
