NESTOR SHABITS 1935 2009 It is with sadness that the family announces that the death of Nestor Shabits occurred at St. Paul's Hospital on Sunday, October 18th 2009 at the age of 74 years. Nestor is survived by his loving wife, Eva (nee Armistead); daughters, Shari (David Priest) and Marie (George Hutchinson), both of Vernon BC; sister, Elizabeth Kendrick of Victoria BC; aunt, Mary Farion; sister-in-law, Janet (Ken) Armistead of Winnipeg; brotherin-law, Frank Armistead of Regina; and sister-in-law, Janet Kostyna of Gravelbourg; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Katherine (1976) and Paul (1974); sister, Eugenia Makahoniuk and her husband, Bill; brother, Adam; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Lucy and Cecil Armistead; and brothers-in-law, Graham Kendrick and Ken Armistead. Nestor was born on May 4th, 1935 near Verigin SK. The family moved to Benito when he was 5 years old where he attended school and worked on the farm as he grew up. He obtained his B.Sc. and B.Ed. degrees at Brandon College and while there enrolled in the Canadian Officers Training Corps. After graduation he started his teaching career in Durban Manitoba and later Waskada. He and Eva were married on July 7th 1962 in Swan River and they relocated to Brandon in 1966 where Nestor would teach high school classes for the next 22 years. In 1987 he attended Assiniboine Community College and received his Computer Technology Certificate following which he and Eva relocated to Saskatoon where Nestor continued his teaching career at Compucollege as well as Northlands College in Buffalo Narrows and LaLoche before retiring from CDI in Saskatoon. Nestor was a valued member of St. John's Anglican Church and was active in the men's club, Bridge Club, Supper Club, and mentoring of refugees. He was a driving force in the Coronary Artery Rehabilitation Group (CARG) holding many executive positions and editing the newsletter. He was on the Board of the Saskatoon Convalescent Home and a member of the Woodworker's Guild. Nestor was always busy and had a number of favorite pastimes and hobbies including wood working, gardening, photography, computer programming, walking and the outdoors as well as camping and campfire cooking and making cheese cake. Nestor particularly cherished the times he had with family and friends. Long weekends and summer holidays were spent traveling to and visiting with family both immediate and extended. Nestor had a lifelong dedication of giving back to his community and was always willing to help out wherever he saw a need. He was a kind, gentle and generous man with a dry sense of humor who will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by his family and many friends. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to CARG (Coronary Artery Rehabilitation Group 2020 College Dr. Saskatoon, SK S7N 2W4), the Prostrate Cancer Research Foundation (#306 145 Front St. E. Toronto ON M5A 1E3) or a charity of choice. Funeral Services will take place on Friday, October 23rd, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the St. John's Anglican Cathedral with inurnment to follow in the Columbarium prior to a reception in the Church Hall. COWIE, Barrie John Mr. Barry Cowie of Camrose passed away on Saturday, October 17, 2009 at the age of 64 years. MACDOUGALL, Stuart Livingston - At the Sault Area Hospital - General Site. The beloved husband of Jean, and very dear father of Charlotte Ann, Robert and Rosemary on Sunday, October 18, 2009. Stuart was born the 29th of January, 1926 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S.A., the eldest child of the late Stuart and Leona (Bradley) MacDougall and grandson of the late John and Anna Bradley of Centerville, Iowa and Peter and Mary Jane (Shuttleworth) MacDougall of the Sault. While growing up, Stuart lived in several locations in the U.S.A. and Canada with his parents before his father returned to the Sault where Stuart grew up with his three brothers on Kohler Street. While the Second World War was on and Stuart was in Grade 12 in high school he received a notice that he had to obtain his Medical and Physical Military Fitness Assessment so he could be ready for Military Service. Stuart passed his exam and went on to join up for General Service in the Canadian Army where he served for 18 months until the war ended. After the war, Stuart enrolled at the University of Toronto where he graduated as a Civil Engineer in 1951. After graduation Stuart worked for a short time for the city of Hamilton and then decided to move to the United States where he worked as an engineer in the Berkeley, California area at the time when California was building the Richmond, San Rafael bridge across San Francisco Bay. Stuart married Jean Taylor of the Sault on the 11th of December, 1954 in Reno, Nevada, a long time girlfriend after she flew out to California. After living in California for approximately two and a half years, Stuart returned to the Sault where he worked as an engineer for a short time. He then became “articled” to Mr. Edison McQuarrie a local Ontario Land Surveyor and after writing his surveying exams he became an Ontario Land Surveyor himself until he retired in 1992. Stuart and Jean were the proud parents of three children - Charlotte, who is married to Hugh Murray and living in Mississauga, Ontario, Robert, married to Joanna (McFarling) and living here in the Sault and Rosemary who is married to Gerald Finlayson and living in Niagara Falls, Ontario. He was the proud grandfather of Ian and Kathleen Murray, Eamon, Declan and Martin MacDougall and Carolyn and Bradley Finlayson. Stuart started his surveying business in partnership with Mr. Frank Wilson where the firm was known as MacDougall and Wilson. Then when Mr. Wilson retired from surveying, Stuart continued the business for many years by himself retiring in 1992 when he sold his business to Urso Surveying Ltd. While still a surveyor, Stuart owned his own airplane and traveled extensively. After retirement he obtained his license for a motorcycle at the age of 78 which he had fun driving. Stuart is survived by his wife Jean and his children and grandchildren and his three younger brothers and their families. Roderick (late Merla) and his 3 children, Susan, John and Laura. Douglas (late Joan) and his wife Anne, and Doug's two children, Karen and Ellen and his youngest brother Kenneth (Nancy) and son Ryan. VAUGHAN, Joan Pamela - 1952-2009 - Passed away at her residence, North Bay, Monday, October 19, 2009, beloved wife of Dr. Ed Vaughan in her 58th year. Joan and Ed met in Red Lake, Ontario, in 1974 and moved to her lakefront home in North Bay in 1977. There their children Brad, Melanie and Erin, all delivered by Ed, made their lives complete. There was no greater loving mother. Joan was the loved daughter of Malcolm and Isabelle Wilding and dear sister of Ian and Douglas Wilding. Joan embraced the outdoors; skiing, snowshoeing, swimming, etc. She was an avid gardener and traveler. She made wonderful crafts and folk art. She loved her circle of friends and the happy times they spent together. Three years ago, Joan built her dream home on Viceroy Road, Trout Lake. She loved being outside with nature and wildlife, sitting on the rocks by the lake listening to the wind in the pine needles. This was her place of beauty, her utopia. CARRICK, Charles (Chuck) - Pre- deceased by his wife Evelyn (nee Everitt), parents Agnes and Edward Carrick of Tilbury and siblings Florence and James, also of Tilbury. Father of Dan (Diana) and Kathy Carrick of Tilbury and Larry (Anne) of Puce. “Grandpa Chuckie” to David and Evan of Tilbury, and Siobhan, James and Alicia of Puce. Uncle to many nieces and nephews. Chuck lived all of his adult life in Tilbury, and contributed much to the community as a long-time businessman and as the town's mayor for over 17 years, during which time he is credited with bringing several industries to the area. Prior to his election as mayor, Chuck served for many years as a town councillor and later as reeve on county council. For many years, he was also a member of the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority. Chuck began his business career in the late 1930's as owner of the “Red Indian Gas Station” prior to joining the Ontario Provincial Police in 1942. He later joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, and served as an air-gunner and wireless operator until the end of WWII. During the 1950's and early 1960's Carrick's Gifts and Appliance Store on Queen Street was known to many as simply “The Dime Store”, a business partnership with wife Evelyn, a department store where one could buy pretty well everything from auto licenses to refrigerators, televisions and toys for the kids. Later, Chuck became the town's Pontiac and Buick dealer and sold new and used pianos. After selling both the dime store and the auto dealership, he concentrated on his role as mayor until 1993. Continuing to work with his son Dan in the piano business, Chuck never missed a day until he became ill in February, 2009. Chuck was also a well-known local musician whose dance band, “The 4 Hits and a Miss”, entertained at weddings and community dances from Chatham to Windsor. He and the band played almost every weekend from 1952 until 1996 - - - a remarkable run by any measure. Chuck was a member in good standing of both the Tilbury Legion and Knights of Columbus. Visitation at REAUME FUNERAL HOME, 6 Canal Street West, Tilbury from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday. Parish prayers 4 p.m. Wednesday. Legion service 7 p.m. Wednesday. K of C prayers 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Family and friends are invited to proceed directly to St. Francis Xavier Church on Thursday, October 22, 2009 for Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Interment at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery. Memorial donations to Heart and Stroke Foundation or charity of choice appreciated.

Eileen Margaret Chisholm With sadness her family announce the death of Eileen Margaret Chisholm on Sunday, October 18, 2009 at the age of 89 years. Eileen was born January 8, 1920 at Whitemouth, MB, the third child of Albert and Hattie (nee Gosnell) West. After the premature death of her father, Eileen returned with her family to the home of her grandparents at Carievale, SK, where she grew up and graduated from high school. She operated a rural telephone switchboard at Alameda, SK for two years, then enrolled in Brandon General Hospital School of Nursing at Brandon, MB, where she received her registered nurse's certification. In March 1945 she married Melvin Chisholm and together they moved to Saskatoon. Eileen was employed by St. Paul's Hospital as a head nurse for 35 years. She was dedicated to the profession and never forgot that the hospitals were there for the patients. Eileen enjoyed travel. Accompanied by her husband, she saw most of North America, Great Britain, Japan, Hong Kong, Fiji, New Zealand and Australia. She spent her leisure time painting landscapes in oil, playing her organ and gardening. She was an accomplished alpine skier and had many happy ski holidays with her grandchildren at Banff. She was predeceased by her parents; two brothers, Kenneth West (Noreen) of Sarnia, ON, Frank West (Rita) of Toronto; brother-in-law, Cyril Gill of Toronto, ON. Left to mourn are her husband, of 64 years, Melvin Chisholm of Saskatoon, SK; son, Douglas Chisholm (Judy) of Kindersley, SK; sister, Leta Gill of Toronto, ON; grandchildren, Sean Chisholm (Sheila) of Morinville, AB, Leah Chisholm (Derek LaFramboise) of Victoria, BC, Amber Palafox (Jonelle) of Edmonton, AB; greatgrandchildren, Skyler, Kaileen and Cole of Morinville, AB, Taro of Victoria, BC; and a number of nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank all the wonderful staff at Luther Special Care Home for their compassionate care and help at a difficult time. Rest in peace dear Eileen we will miss you very much. Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in the Auditorium on the third floor of Luther Special Care Home, 1212 Osler Street, Saskatoon, with Reverend Heather Anderson officiating. Private interment later. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Eileen to the Luther Special Care Home. Arrangements are in care of Martens Warman Funeral Home, 934-4888. NASU, Toshi Peacefully passed away on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at the Ottawa General Hospital, Toshi Nasu, age 62. Survived by his father Kazuichi Nasu and mother Tsuyako Nasu, two brothers and one sister, all of Hokkaido, Japan. Toshi will be sadly missed by his friends of 38 years, John and Dora Humplik, Hidetoshi Sugawara and many other friends. At Toshi's request, there will be no funeral service. Interment of ashes will be held at Hope Cemetery, Gloucester on Tuesday, October from 2 to 3 p.m. A celebration of Toshi's life will be held on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at Hockey Sushi in Kanata at 6 p.m. Published in the Ottawa Citizen on 10/20/2009

OLIVER, Betty Suddenly at the Hartford Home in Morrisburg on Saturday, October 17, 2009. Betty Oliver (nee Waring) formerly of Cambridge in her 91st year. Dearly beloved wife of the late Douglas Oliver. Loving mother of Jane and her husband Gerry Rumig of Cambridge and Joanne and her husband John Walsh of RR1 Iroquois. Predeceased by her brother Archie Waring. Sadly missed by 4 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will take place at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home Williamsburg on Wednesday, October 21 at 11:30 am. Donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association would be gratefully acknowledged by the family. Interment of Cremated remains Cambridge Ontario at a later date.
