HOEDEMAKER Alice Florella Passed away at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster on October 15th, 2009. Alice was born January 29th, 1942 in Oakville, Ontario. She graduated from the University of Toronto in 1964 and moved to British Columbia in 1968. Alice and her husband, Everwijn Hoedemaker made their home in Aldergrove, British Columbia and recently celebrated 44 years of marriage. Alice was predeceased by her sister, Evelyn Bundy and survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Joyce Booth, her brother-in-law Charles Bundy, her sister and brother-in-law Helen and Erwin Biener, and by Sygne and Pete Lindgren, Joanne and Lee Purvis, Kim and Kevin Haber and grandchildren, Morgan, Naomi, Nathaniel, Rebekah and Theodore. SINASAC, Kathleen "Kay" (nee Fodor) Passed away peacefully on October 16, 2009 at Windsor Regional Hospital (Met Campus); having lost her final battle with cancer. Devoted wife of the late John Sinasac (1998). Loving mother to the late Michael (2002), and to David and wife Jean Kawasoe. Dear daughter of the late Steve and Ester Fodor, and daughter-in-law of the late Harold and Mona Sinasac. Dearest sister to Bill (Madeline) Fodor, Steve (Helen) Fodor, Mary (Fred) Binder, Olga (Steve) Albu, Helen (Ted) Varga, Elizabeth (Bob) Pavkov, Margaret (Eckhard) Denzinger, Julie Fodor, and Frank (Heidi) Fodor. Predeceased by brothers Jasper and David Fodor, and sisters Rose Canfield and Irene Horvath. Sister-in-law to Lou Ann Morillo and Helen O'Gorman. Loved Aunt Katie to nieces and nephews, and Great Aunt to many more. Kay will be fondly remembered for her caring and generous nature, love of conversation, gardening and Danielle Steel novels, and of her unwavering devotion to her family. Kay was born in Warburg, Alberta, but her family relocated to Ontario where she eventually settling in Windsor. Kay worked for many years in the credit department at Koenig Fuel & Supply Co. in Detroit, Michigan, while sharing apartments with sisters, including the memorable upstairs apartment she shared with Irene on Cameron Ave. After getting married, Kay devoted her time to her family, focusing her energy to raising her two boys both within and outside of their house on Academy Dr. Following John's death and her boys leaving 'the nest', Kay enjoyed taking care of her home, visiting with relatives and friends, and occasionally working when the opportunity or need arose. In her later years, Kay could often be seen around the streets of South Windsor walking (and talking) with her sister Olga for exercise. Kay also faced many difficult times throughout her life, including the illnesses and deaths of her husband and son, and her own battles with breast cancer and finally leukemia. Through out it all, her strength, courage and enjoyment of life remained. We will all deeply miss her. If so desired, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Windsor & Essex County Cancer Centre Foundation. SZIVOS Maria Passed away peacefully on September 17, 2009 at the age of 87. Born on March 31, 1922 in Hungary, she moved to Canada during the Hungarian revolution in 1956. Maria lived in Brandon, Manitoba and was an assistant director at the University of Manitoba library for more than 25 years. She retired in 1988 and moved to the Sunshine Coast. She lived in Sechelt and Gibsons, B.C. Maria is survived by her brothers Geza and Andrew and their families. Maria's hard work, strong will and persistence will be a legacy to follow in our family for generations to come. Funeral Service will be held at Forest Lawn Funeral Chapel (3789 Royal Oak Ave, Burnaby) on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at 10:00 am. MARTHA McAVOY It is with great sadness that the family of Martha McAvoy announces her passing on October 18th, 2009 at the age of 78 years. Born in Lost River (near Nipawin) on June 20th, 1931, Martha spent most of her life in Saskatoon. She will be dearly missed by her family, son, Kelvin (Diane) Boechler and their children, Katie (Kristen) and Amy; daughter, Terri (Ken) Blue and their children, Adam, Josh, Tiana and Jillian; daughter, Patti Boechler and her children, Camryn and Jace, and son, Dave (Laverne) Boechler and their children, Pamela and Justin. She will also be remembered by her brother, Rudy (Alison) Neufeld and their children, Cory, Scott (Brenda), Glenys; and Erin (Ian) Stanley; she is also survived by her step family, the McAvoy's children and their families. Martha's life was guided by her faith. She was a wife and mother, devoted to her family. She faced all challenges with tenacity and optimism. Her kind, generous spirit touched many through her willingness to share her time and creative talents. Martha had many interests such as sewing, quilting, knitting, painting, making rosaries, cooking and travelling. She took pleasure in meeting new people and gladly participated in activities that strengthened her social community. She had countless friends, was second Mom to many, and kept in touch with people all over the world. Martha was predeceased by her mother, Tina Gollan; father, Cornelius Neufeld; husband, James McAvoy; her first husband, Robert Boechler and her son, Joseph Boechler; and her nephew, Sean. The Vigil for Martha will be held on Thursday, October 22nd at 7:30 p.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, October 23rd at 10:30 a.m., with both services at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church (110-104th ST. W.). Rite of Committal will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery. Since Martha supported many causes, in lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of choice. Born in Quebec City, QC, she was the daughter of the late Godfrey and Charlotte (Sylk) Baller. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family of nine siblings. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Carl, and daughter Anne Swanton. She is survived by son Jim Ford (Jean) La Riviere, MB; daughter Adele Crowell (Tom) Halifax, NS; daughter Ellie Altmann (Derek) Innisfil, ON; grandchildren: Michael Ford, Thunder Bay; Roland Ford (Julie), Charlottetown, PEI; Percy Ford (Denise) Thunder Bay; Carol VanRamshorst (Terry) Thunder Bay; George Swanton (Melody) Thunder Bay; Christine Swanton-Dolkjar (Scott) Thunder Bay; Allan Swanton (Corrine) Thunder Bay; Taylor Altmann; Caitlin Altmann, Innisfill, ON; Amelia Crowell; Julia Crowell, Halifax, NS; 14 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. McGREGOR, Violet “Vi“ S. (nee Gunn) - February 9, 1920 - October 16, 2009 - Violet died quietly and peacefully at the Rockyview General Hospital, Calgary, AB, on Friday, October 16, 2009. Born on February 9, 1920 in Brantford, ON, Violet grew up in Brantford and settled in Etobicoke, ON for most of her adult life. She worked for Bell Telephone in Toronto and was a very active volunteer for the Ontario Conservative Party. Living her last years in Calgary, Violet was able to spend time with family and watch her grandchildren grow. She will be missed greatly by those who knew and loved her. She is survived by her loving son David (Laura) McGregor of Calgary; nieces Diane Woods and Barbara Titman as well as their families all of Mississauga. Violet will be dearly missed by her grandchildren Hayley and Niall. She was predeceased by her husband David B. McGregor; brother Jack Gunn and sister Betsy Slack. Violet loved life, her family and her pets. Violet will be laid to rest on November 30, 2009 in Concord Ontario's Beechwood Cemetery alongside husband David. DAWYD-LATTA, Mya Isabelle - October 5, 2009 - October 8, 2009. Baby Mya surprised Mommy, Daddy and big sister Ava on October 5, 2009 at 6:52 p.m. weighing 5 lbs., 4.5 oz at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. Our angel fought hard to give us three precious days. On the evening of October 8, 2009 at St. Joseph's Hospital in London, while in her Mama's arms and with her Daddy by her side, baby Mya took her final breath before beginning her journey to the Spirit World. MACMILLAN, Kathleen Rita - March 1, 1916 - October 17, 2009 in Niagara on the Lake, Ontario. Kay was the beloved wife of the late Alexander Duncan MacMillan and the loving mother of Alison MacMillan Ubbink (Martyn) of Niagara on the Lake. She was one of seven children born in Greenfield to MaryAnne Campbell (3rd of Kenyon) and John Angus MacKinnon (6th of Kenyon) in Glengarry County. Kay and Alex (Dunc) were married in Sudbury in 1944 and moved to Strathmore, Ontario, where they enjoyed the friendship of close neighbours; the MacIntoshes, the Crawfords, the Bilmers and the Deruchies. Kay was predeceased by Alex (1991), her brothers, Angus and William (Bill) MacKinnon, her sisters, Anna Lavery, Dorothy Kennedy, Clara MacLeod and Margaret MacKinnon and her sister and brothers-in-law Sadie (MacMillan) Martel and John and Charles MacMillan. Kay was a much loved sister-in-law of Gertrude McDonald of Cornwall, and dear friend of Marguerite Deruchie of Maxville Manor and cousins Tillie and Maurice MacMillan and family of Washago. Beloved Dad and Mentor to Amy (husband Dane), Gary (wife Vicky) and Mackenzie at home. Beloved son of Glen and Joanne Mancell, Grandson of Edna Mancell, Merlin., also father in law William Stickles, Harrow. Cherished brother of Pat & wife Rosalie Mancell, & nephew Cameron, Greg & wife Michelle Mancell all of Merlin. Grandpa Mike will be missed by Denise, Grace, Eve, Trey, and Chase. Mike attended Merlin High School & St. Clair College and received a Degree in Architectural Technology however he ended up in the automotive sector as a Project Engineer and was highly thought of by his peers. MAYNARD, Donald Kenneth O.L.S. (Ret.) - Courageous to the end of his days, Don died Saturday, October 17, 2009 in his 79th year. Mourning his death are his loving wife Joan Maynard (nee Madill) and daughters Elizabeth Maynard-Gregg (Dave Gregg), Jennifer Anderson (Rhonda Gibson) and Kathleen Maynard (Marc Ducharme). Nicholas Anderson (Anna) and Loribeth Gregg are missing their grandfather. Born in Toronto, Don attended Brown School, North Toronto Collegiate, the University of Toronto and the Ontario Agricultural College at Guelph. He articled with Fitzmaurice & Boyer in Bracebridge, Ontario and received his Ontario Land Surveyor commission in 1959. Don had a private practice in Powassan, Ontario for 30 years. He was an ultimate woodsman and wilderness canoe trekker, and a brilliant mind. Don and his family have been extremely grateful for the care and concern of Dr. T. Rotondo, Dr. M. Desjardins and his assistant, and the palliative care nurses at North Bay General Hospital Scollard Site. Many thanks for the kindness of family, neighbours and friends near and far. A private family graveside service will be held in Lakefield, Ontario at a later date. The family requests those who desire to remember Don with a walk along the trails in the Powassan Pines, or a donation to the Powassan & District Union Public Library. CULLEN, Judy (nee Rawlings) Judy passed away in September after a courageous battle with cancer. HOZJAN , Pauline Theresa (nee Zaleschuk) Beloved wife of Steve Hozjan of Calgary, passed away at the Rockyview Hospital on October 16, 2009 at the age of 65 years.
