GOFF, Cyrus Granville "Red" September 2, 1917 - October 16, 2009 Peacefully passed away at the age of ninety-two years on October 16, 2009. He will be dearly missed by Ken Shukler, who he considered as his son, nieces, Brenda Osgood and Wendy Eimer and nephew Stephen Osgood. One of his proudest achievements was his significant WWII contribution. A service will be held on Monday, October 19, 2009 at 2:30 p.m., at Oliver's Grande Prairie Funeral Chapel, 10005 - 107 Ave, Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 1L8, and Tel: 780-532-2929. ALWARD , Lawrence Wilfred September 25, 1952 - October 18, 2009 Lawrence Wilfred Alward passed away after a short illness at the Foothills Hospital. He was from Havelock, NB and moved to Calgary in 1984. Lawrence was a self-employed painter; loved life and was always smiling. He loved to be surrounded by family, friends and there was nothing more he enjoyed than cooking for them. Lawrence also loved to travel and see new places. Lawrence is lovingly remembered and will be sadly missed by his wife of twenty-three years, Brenda; sister Annabel (Doug); brother Winston (Betty) of NB; brother-in-law Glenn (Barb); sisters-in-law Linda, Marilyn (John) and Laura (Mike); as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends. ANDERSON , John Ronald September 17, 1929 - October 19, 2009 John passed away October 19, 2009 and leaves to mourn his loving wife Marg and sons John Jr. (Anne), Ron and Don. He also leaves behind his loving grandchildren Shaughn, Jessica, Ashley, Sara, Jeremy, his brother David Anderson (Norma), his sister Kay Olsson (George) and sisters-in-law Carol Anderson, Kay Duquesne (George), Grace Johnson and Helen VanTintelin (Steph). He was predeceased by two infant children, Joseph and Ann, his brother Stuart Anderson and brothers-in-law Jim Dietrich and Doug Johnson. After working thirty-eight years with Imperial Oil/Esso Resources John always valued his friendships with all his colleagues and many other long-time friends. With his fishing in summer, hockey in winter and some golf and travelling, he kept busy during his retirement. Yes, life in Calgary for an original Calgarian was wonderful. BARBERO , Irene Francesca April 11, 1926 - October 17, 2009 It is with great sadness our family announces the passing of Irene Francesca Barbero, beloved mother, grandmother and friend. Irene passed away at the Rockyview General Hospital in Calgary on October 17, 2009 at the age of 83. Irene was born April 11, 1926, in Cossano Belbo, Italy. In 1947 she married the love of her life, Primo. In 1957, together with her husband and young son, Irene immigrated to Canada to begin a new life in Calgary. She was predeceased by Primo, her beloved husband, in December 1982. Irene's compassion, gentle spirit and strength of character will be greatly missed by her son Michael and his wife Marilyn, as well as her grandsons Michael and Andrew Barbero, and Irene's daughter, Blanche MacAulay and her granddaughters Lindsay and Sara MacAulay. Irene leaves to mourn, her sister Maria of Asti, Italy and her brother Domenico of Torino, Italy, along with many dear friends and adopted family members in Calgary's Italian community. Her main joys and devotions in life were family, friends and faith. Irene loved to work with her hands, and was always happiest when gardening, knitting, crocheting, and above all, cooking. BISCHOFF , Alexander October 29, 1933 - October 18, 2009 Alexander Bischoff, beloved husband of Joan Bischoff of Calgary, passed away suddenly on Sunday, October 18, 2009 at the age of 75 years. Alex joined the R.C.M.P. at the age of nineteen. He retired as a Staff Sergeant in Ottawa in 1977. He joined the Calgary City Police and worked as a bail magistrate until 1992 when he officially retired. He is survived by his loving wife Joan; son Bradley (Deb); daughter Lori (Richard); grandchildren, Brett, Jared, Hayley and Lindsay; brothers, Peter (Linda), Bernard (Trish); and sisters, Caroline, Bernadette (Bob), Lucille (Danny). LITTLE , Murray Duncan December 22, 1928 - October 17, 2009 It is with great sadness that the family of Duncan Little announces his passing on October 17, 2009 at Mount Royal Care Facility in Calgary. Duncan was born and raised in Saskatoon and came to Calgary with his wife and family in 1963. He is survived by his wife June, two daughters Cindy Burlingam and Sharon Little and son Murray Little. He has four grandchildren Kaitlyn and Garrad Burlingam, Jinell Matt and Christopher Little. Dunc worked at Hudson Bay Oil & Gas for twenty-five years until his retirement from Amoco in 1982. For his retirement he spent his winters in Arizona and summers in Waskesiu, Sask. P.A.N.P. van SLOOTEN , Linda Louise (nee Bodkin) December 1, 1944 - October 17, 2009 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Linda, on Saturday, October 17, 2009 at the age of 64 years. Linda was born on December 1, 1944 in North Battleford, SK. She left North Battleford to attend nursing school in Hamilton, ON and that is where she met Ken. Linda was a social butterfly who loved people and it showed by her many loyal friends and extended family. If you were lucky enough to meet Linda, whether it be on the golf course, the cruise ship or standing in a grocery line up, you became her friend. She liked nothing better than to entertain these friends by serving cocktails, delicious meals and great desserts. "WE WILL MISS YOU." Linda is survived by Ken, her loving husband of forty-four years; sons Dave and Mike (Stacy Green); and her beautiful grandsons whom she was so proud of: Ty Greyson and Easton Fox. GOUT , Gerald (Gerry) Walter September 17, 1930 - October 19, 2009 Gerry Gout, beloved husband of Corrine Gout of Calgary, passed away at home on Monday, October 19, 2009 at the age of 79 years. Gerry was born in Athens, Greece, evacuating to South Africa during the war. After the war he finished his education in England and came to Canada in 1954. Gerry met his wife Corrine here in Canada and married in 1963. KANE, Franklin G. Former Edmonton resident Franklin G. Kane, of Petaluma, Calif., passed away suddenly on October 13, 2009. He was born February 19, 1938, in The Bronx, New York. He graduated from City University of New York and received his teacher training at Emerson College in England. In 1965 he moved to Sacramento, Calif., as part of a group of young teachers who transformed the struggling Sacramento Waldorf School into a thriving K-12 institution. In 1976, he co-founded the Rudolf Steiner College in Fair Oaks, Calif., for training of Waldorf teachers. In 1981, he moved to Edmonton and led the first public Waldorf program in North America. He earned an MA in counseling from Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, Calif., and began a career as a therapist. For the past 10 years, he and his wife Gayle managed care homes in the San Francisco Bay Area for children and youth, and helped many transition to better lives. He leaves his wife Gayle Wicks Kane of Petaluma and her son Kristopher Sawatsky of Hong Kong; daughter Andrea Kane of Washington, D.C.; son George Kane and his wife Ann and their children Benjamin, Adam and Louisa, of Lexington, Mass.; daughter Sonya Bingaman, her husband, Paul, and their children Katherine and Charles, of Fair Oaks. Mary Olfert December 5, 1919 October 18, 2009 Mary Olfert (nee Lesser) was born on the family farm northwest of Hague on December 5, 1919. She attended her school years at Heidelberg District, completing Grade 9. Mom was baptized upon her confession of faith in the Hague Mennonite Church. She married Abram Olfert on December 7, 1941 in the Hague Mennonite Church. They farmed in the Rosthern area until 1962, when they became business entrepreneurs in Hague. They built the Hague apartments, which Mom operated until 1977. Other business ventures were the M & M Grocery Store and Restaurant and the Silver Spur Restaurant and Gas Station. After the passing of her husband, she moved to Sunset Manor in Hague, where she enjoyed fourteen years. Her last homes have been PineView Manor and the Mennonite Nursing Home in Rosthern. Mom is survived by her loving family: Maryann (Wally) Hamm, Ruth (Bob) Doell, Ella (Harry) Penner, (Victor Phoenix), Edwin (Lorraine) Olfert, Mabe (Les) Nesbitt, Bev (Ivan) Gabrysh, Belinda (Wayne) Reddekopp, Karen (Rick) Penner; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren; brother, Henry (Lena) Lesser; sisters-in-law, Martha Neufeld and Tina Doell. Mom was predeceased by her husband, Abram; parents, Conrad and Mary Lesser; step-mother, Margaretha Lesser; children, Abie, Anthony and Dora; siblings, Rosie (Fred) Knippel, Edna (Walter) Harder, Mike (Mary) Lesser, Esther (Jake) Giesbrecht, Frederick Lesser, Peter Lesser, and Helen Lesser. NESTOR SHABITS 1935 2009 It is with sadness that the family announces that the death of Nestor Shabits occurred at St. Paul's Hospital on Sunday, October 18th 2009 at the age of 74 years. Nestor is survived by his loving wife, Eva (nee Armistead); daughters, Shari (David Priest) and Marie (George Hutchinson), both of Vernon BC; sister, Elizabeth Kendrick of Victoria BC; aunt, Mary Farion; sister-in-law, Janet (Ken) Armistead of Winnipeg; brotherin-law, Frank Armistead of Regina; and sister-in-law, Janet Kostyna of Gravelbourg; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Katherine (1976) and Paul (1974); sister, Eugenia Makahoniuk and her husband, Bill; brother, Adam; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Lucy and Cecil Armistead; and brothers-in-law, Graham Kendrick and Ken Armistead. Nestor was born on May 4th, 1935 near Verigin SK. The family moved to Benito when he was 5 years old where he attended school and worked on the farm as he grew up. He obtained his B.Sc. and B.Ed. degrees at Brandon College and while there enrolled in the Canadian Officers Training Corps. After graduation he started his teaching career in Durban Manitoba and later Waskada. He and Eva were married on July 7th 1962 in Swan River and they relocated to Brandon in 1966 where Nestor would teach high school classes for the next 22 years. In 1987 he attended Assiniboine Community College and received his Computer Technology Certificate following which he and Eva relocated to Saskatoon where Nestor continued his teaching career at Compucollege as well as Northlands College in Buffalo Narrows and LaLoche before retiring from CDI in Saskatoon. Nestor was a valued member of St. John's Anglican Church and was active in the men's club, Bridge Club, Supper Club, and mentoring of refugees. He was a driving force in the Coronary Artery Rehabilitation Group (CARG) holding many executive positions and editing the newsletter. He was on the Board of the Saskatoon Convalescent Home and a member of the Woodworker's Guild. Nestor was always busy and had a number of favorite pastimes and hobbies including wood working, gardening, photography, computer programming, walking and the outdoors as well as camping and campfire cooking and making cheese cake. Nestor particularly cherished the times he had with family and friends. Long weekends and summer holidays were spent traveling to and visiting with family both immediate and extended. Nestor had a lifelong dedication of giving back to his community and was always willing to help out wherever he saw a need. He was a kind, gentle and generous man with a dry sense of humor who will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by his family and many friends. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to CARG (Coronary Artery Rehabilitation Group 2020 College Dr. Saskatoon, SK S7N 2W4), the Prostrate Cancer Research Foundation (#306 145 Front St. E. Toronto ON M5A 1E3) or a charity of choice. Henry Wollf Henry Wollf quietly slipped into the arms of his Lord and Saviour October 17, 2009 at 2:10 a.m. at the age of 75 years after a courageous and determined battle with cancer. Kurt Zimmerman June 30th, 1923 October 19th, 2009 The peaceful passing of Mr. Kurt Zimmerman, age 86 years of Saskatoon, SK, occurred on Monday, October 19, 2009 at Luther Sunset Home, Saskatoon, SK. Kurt was born in Lotz, Poland. After the Second World War he moved to Germany, settling in Buedeningen, a small village near Frankfort. It was there he met Maria Dyck. They married on January 18th, 1947. In June 1949, they immigrated to Canada starting out on a farm at Waldheim, SK. The next year, 1950, they moved to Saskatoon. Kurt worked for Sask Power for 35 years. He enjoyed brick laying, gardening and photography. He also liked to travel and holiday. Left to cherish Kurt's memory four sons, Peter (Donna), David (Myra), Henry (Paula), Walter Zimmerman; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; brother, Fred of Germany; brother-in-law, Henry (Dorothy) Dyck; sisterin-law, Margaret Doerksen; and numerous nieces and nephews. Kurt was predeceased by his loving wife, Maria and brother, Fritz. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, October 23rd, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Hillcrest Funeral Home (east on 8th Street, turn right before railway crossing). MARTHA McAVOY It is with great sadness that the family of Martha McAvoy announces her passing on October 18th, 2009 at the age of 78 years. Born in Lost River (near Nipawin) on June 20th, 1931, Martha spent most of her life in Saskatoon. She will be dearly missed by her family, son, Kelvin (Diane) Boechler and their children, Katie (Kristen) and Amy; daughter, Terri (Ken) Blue and their children, Adam, Josh, Tiana and Jillian; daughter, Patti Boechler and her children, Camryn and Jace, and son, Dave (Laverne) Boechler and their children, Pamela and Justin. She will also be remembered by her brother, Rudy (Alison) Neufeld and their children, Cory, Scott (Brenda), Glenys; and Erin (Ian) Stanley; she is also survived by her step family, the McAvoy's children and their families. Martha's life was guided by her faith. She was a wife and mother, devoted to her family. She faced all challenges with tenacity and optimism. Her kind, generous spirit touched many through her willingness to share her time and creative talents. Martha had many interests such as sewing, quilting, knitting, painting, making rosaries, cooking and travelling. She took pleasure in meeting new people and gladly participated in activities that strengthened her social community. She had countless friends, was second Mom to many, and kept in touch with people all over the world. Martha was predeceased by her mother, Tina Gollan; father, Cornelius Neufeld; husband, James McAvoy; her first husband, Robert Boechler and her son, Joseph Boechler; and her nephew, Sean. The Vigil for Martha will be held on Thursday, October 22nd at 7:30 p.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, October 23rd at 10:30 a.m., with both services at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church (110-104th ST. W.). Rite of Committal will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery. Since Martha supported many causes, in lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of choice. VAUGHAN, Joan Pamela - 1952-2009 - Passed away at her residence, North Bay, Monday, October 19, 2009, beloved wife of Dr. Ed Vaughan in her 58th year. Joan and Ed met in Red Lake, Ontario, in 1974 and moved to her lakefront home in North Bay in 1977. There their children Brad, Melanie and Erin, all delivered by Ed, made their lives complete. There was no greater loving mother. Joan was the loved daughter of Malcolm and Isabelle Wilding and dear sister of Ian and Douglas Wilding. Joan embraced the outdoors; skiing, snowshoeing, swimming, etc. She was an avid gardener and traveler. She made wonderful crafts and folk art. She loved her circle of friends and the happy times they spent together. Three years ago, Joan built her dream home on Viceroy Road, Trout Lake. She loved being outside with nature and wildlife, sitting on the rocks by the lake listening to the wind in the pine needles. This was her place of beauty, her utopia.
