STEWART, Anthony (Tony) Thomas March 25, 1958 - October 17, 2009 Anthony (Tony) Stewart passed away suddenly in the arms of his beloved wife Gail on Saturday, October 17, 2009 at the age of 51 years. Tony was the loving father of Patrick and Jaynelle (Joe); adored grandfather of Angelo and Lorenzo; and brothers Terry (Marion), Danny (Jocelyn), Michael (Rachelle), and Jimmy (Debbie). He was the cherished stepson of Frank Jansen; son-in-law of Estelle and Bill Eaton; and brother-in-law to Diane and Al McMillan and Kathy and John Stevens. Nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles are too numerous to mention. Tony was predeceased by his amazing mother Kathleen Jansen and brother Patrick. Tony had a long, successful career with Toshiba Canada and recently embarked on a new venture with Samsung. He was an avid golfer, soccer player and fan. Tony will be remembered as a kind, gentle man with a generous spirit and wonderful sense of humour. In particular, his love of God and children reflects the beauty of his soul. Victor was born in Margionys, Lithuania on January 15, 1922. He moved to Germany during World War II and immigrated to Calgary with his wife Mary in 1961. KANE, Franklin G. Former Edmonton resident Franklin G. Kane, of Petaluma, Calif., passed away suddenly on October 13, 2009. He was born February 19, 1938, in The Bronx, New York. He graduated from City University of New York and received his teacher training at Emerson College in England. In 1965 he moved to Sacramento, Calif., as part of a group of young teachers who transformed the struggling Sacramento Waldorf School into a thriving K-12 institution. In 1976, he co-founded the Rudolf Steiner College in Fair Oaks, Calif., for training of Waldorf teachers. In 1981, he moved to Edmonton and led the first public Waldorf program in North America. He earned an MA in counseling from Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, Calif., and began a career as a therapist. For the past 10 years, he and his wife Gayle managed care homes in the San Francisco Bay Area for children and youth, and helped many transition to better lives. He leaves his wife Gayle Wicks Kane of Petaluma and her son Kristopher Sawatsky of Hong Kong; daughter Andrea Kane of Washington, D.C.; son George Kane and his wife Ann and their children Benjamin, Adam and Louisa, of Lexington, Mass.; daughter Sonya Bingaman, her husband, Paul, and their children Katherine and Charles, of Fair Oaks. DUNN Edith Lillian July 1, 1925 - October 7, 2009 "Duffy" passed away quietly on October 7, 2009 at Arbutus Care Centre, Vancouver, BC where she has resided for the past six months. Duffy was 84 years old this year and had the opportunity to celebrate her Birthday on July 1st surrounded by family on a nice sunny day. Duffy was born in Mission, BC in 1925 and spent some of her formative years in Half Moon Bay on the Sunshine Coast. She attended York House School in Vancouver and went on to study nursing. After marriage to Ralph St Claire Dunn she focused her energy on raising a family. Duffy is survived by her four children: Vicki deBoer, Randy Dunn, Bradley Dunn and Gregory Dunn and eight grandchildren. Her ready smile and cheery nature endeared her to everyone she met. She had a kind, loving heart and always put others needs before her own, particularly her family. She will be sadly missed by friends and family alike. At Duffy's request there will be no formal service. She asks that in your own way and your own time you celebrate her life and raise a toast to her. CAPLE, Christopher Norman September 23, 1953 November 14, 2008 Born in Vancouver, Christopher died suddenly at home in Victoria, age 55, of a heart attack. Recently retired from the B.C. Ministry of Economic Development, Christopher Caple was proud to have used his intelligence and integrity in the public service over a 30 year career. Chris was a loving, generous and quietly devoted family man. His actions spoke volumes more of an enduring love and care for family and friends. We share many happy memories. Christopher Caple was predeceased by his parents, Dr. Harold Henry Caple and Barbara (nee Murray) Caple. Mary Olfert December 5, 1919 October 18, 2009 Mary Olfert (nee Lesser) was born on the family farm northwest of Hague on December 5, 1919. She attended her school years at Heidelberg District, completing Grade 9. Mom was baptized upon her confession of faith in the Hague Mennonite Church. She married Abram Olfert on December 7, 1941 in the Hague Mennonite Church. They farmed in the Rosthern area until 1962, when they became business entrepreneurs in Hague. They built the Hague apartments, which Mom operated until 1977. Other business ventures were the M & M Grocery Store and Restaurant and the Silver Spur Restaurant and Gas Station. After the passing of her husband, she moved to Sunset Manor in Hague, where she enjoyed fourteen years. Her last homes have been PineView Manor and the Mennonite Nursing Home in Rosthern. Mom is survived by her loving family: Maryann (Wally) Hamm, Ruth (Bob) Doell, Ella (Harry) Penner, (Victor Phoenix), Edwin (Lorraine) Olfert, Mabe (Les) Nesbitt, Bev (Ivan) Gabrysh, Belinda (Wayne) Reddekopp, Karen (Rick) Penner; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren; brother, Henry (Lena) Lesser; sisters-in-law, Martha Neufeld and Tina Doell. Mom was predeceased by her husband, Abram; parents, Conrad and Mary Lesser; step-mother, Margaretha Lesser; children, Abie, Anthony and Dora; siblings, Rosie (Fred) Knippel, Edna (Walter) Harder, Mike (Mary) Lesser, Esther (Jake) Giesbrecht, Frederick Lesser, Peter Lesser, and Helen Lesser. Family was the most important to Mom. Fairness among her ten children and teaching us strong work ethics continued until her dying day. Music and singing was a big part of her life. SULPICO Maximo Barrido A gentle man and gentleman, Maximo Barrido Sulpico passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on the 14th of October, 2009 at Christine Morrison Hospice at M.M.H. Born on November 18, 1920 in Santa Barbara, Iloila, Philippines, Maximo was the oldest of seven children and is survived by his endlessly supportive and caring wife, Anita (nee Celestial). He left the Philippine army as captain and proceeded to work as Senior Security officer for a sugar plantation company from which he then retired, then immigrated to Canada with his wife in 1983. Living in many parts of the country and the United States with his children's families playing the role of wise, patient, and constant grandfather. He was a devout Catholic, arduous craftsman, avid reader of literature and philosophy, and an expert in Eskrima (Filipino martial arts). Maximo was a reserved, intelligent, and giving man who provided for his ever-growing family and instilled in them strong, moral values. His way of giving back was his recent volunteer work at Hospice Niagara even though he was fighting cancer himself. Not a day went by where Chris couldn't put a smile on someone's face with one of his jokes. He will be missed by Stella and Tucker, his four-legged friends and especially all his treats. ROAF, Mary Edith November 13, 1913 - October 15, 2009 Passed away at age 95 -- gone to sit on a board, to champion the cause and preserve the heritage of another place. Trees throughout downtown Vancouver are part of her legacy. Born in Fredericton, NB, Mary moved to Vancouver at a young age with her parents, George and Edith Baird. She graduated from Crofton House School and later received a diploma from the University of Lausanne, Switzerland. During WW2 she served in the Women's Auxiliary of the Seaforth Highlander's of Canada and the Junior League of Vancouver. In the 1950s and 1960s she became President of the Vancouver Community Arts Council, Chair of the Civic Auditorium Board, and served on the boards of the Vancouver Festival Society, Playhouse Theatre Company and the Vancouver Centennial Committee, Community Planning Association of Canada and Vancouver Art Gallery Auxiliary. During her years in Ottawa from 1966 to 1994, Mary served as Vice-President of A Capital for Canadians and of a heritage group she co-founded, Action Sandy Hill. Predeceased by husband Brig. Gen. William G. H. Roaf in 1979, and grandson John in 1998, Mary is survived by her sons, John (Gin), Alan (Bonnie) and Peter (Elise), and grandchildren, Emma, Annabel and James, extended family and good friends of all generations. Linda was born on December 1, 1944 in North Battleford, SK. She left North Battleford to attend nursing school in Hamilton, ON and that is where she met Ken. Linda was a social butterfly who loved people and it showed by her many loyal friends and extended family. If you were lucky enough to meet Linda, whether it be on the golf course, the cruise ship or standing in a grocery line up, you became her friend. FORD, Moncrieff (Monty, Merc) February 25, 1920 - October 18, 2009 It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was an incredible man who measured his wealth not by how much money he had but how many true friends he had. In this he was a very rich man. We will truly miss him and his always at the ready sense of humor. Monty leaves to mourn his loss, his only brother Eric (Betty), daughter Shirley, son Bob, daughter-in-law Jean, granddaughter Donna (Guy) Lunnin, grandsons Rob and Chris, great-grandson Cody and his beloved cat Taffy as well as numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends. SCHNEPPER, Fred On October 16, 2009 Mr. Fred Schnepper of Wetaskiwin passed away suddenly at the age of 44. GOUT , Gerald (Gerry) Walter September 17, 1930 - October 19, 2009 Gerry Gout, beloved husband of Corrine Gout of Calgary, passed away at home on Monday, October 19, 2009 at the age of 79 years. Gerry was born in Athens, Greece, evacuating to South Africa during the war. After the war he finished his education in England and came to Canada in 1954. Gerry met his wife Corrine here in Canada and married in 1963. Besides his loving wife of forty-six years Corrine, Gerry is survived by his son Robert (Bob); daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Trevor Simpson; granddaughters Alex, Gwen and Claire. Jody Ginsberg, MD, FRCP December 27, 1949 - October 15, 2009 Jody Ginsberg passed away October 15, 2009 after a battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Patricia. Jody graduated from the University of Toronto Medical School and had been on staff at the University Hospital since 1983. Henry Wollf Henry Wollf quietly slipped into the arms of his Lord and Saviour October 17, 2009 at 2:10 a.m. at the age of 75 years after a courageous and determined battle with cancer. SUMMERS Rita March 19, 1943 - October 14, 2009 Passed away peacefully at Peace Arch Hospital on October 14th, 2009 after a short battle with cancer. Rita has gone to join her husband Matt Summers who has been missing his dance partner since 2004. She leaves behind her children Claire and John, their partners Dave and Lindsay and two beautiful grandsons, Brandon and Matthew. We wish to thank the intensive care, 4th floor and palliative care staff at Peace Arch Hospital for their loving care of our mom. Rita will forever be remembered as a classy lady with a big heart who faced adversity with courage. MR. WILLIAM RAY DEMERAIS 1945 2009 It is with great sadness that Bill passed away peacefully on Friday, October 16, 2009 at the age of 64. He is survived by the love of his life of 32 years, Wendy (Svendsen); his children, Kerry, Justin and Melanie (Cam) Harms; his precious granddaughters, Madison, Chloe and Mya; his mother, Ethel Demerais, his siblings, Fay (Dennis) Leonard, Ken (Mavis), Dennis, Clive, Maureen (Ken) Konkin, Doug (Linda), George (Margaret), Elaine (Gordon) Walker, Sid (Beatrice), Verla (Vern) Becker, Lyle (Angela), Lisa; his mother-in-law, Karla Svendsen; Wendy's siblings, Alfred (Helen), Robert (Carol), David, Roland (Monica), Carole (Larry) Peterson, Ivan (Marylie), Karen (Tom) Lloyd, Colin; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Bill was predeceased by his father, Louis Demerais; father-in-law, Georg Svendsen; and nephews, Kevin Svendsen, Nathan Svendsen and Daniel Hope. Bill loved to play and watch sports of all kinds and was an active member of the P.A. Legion, Metis Local 269 and the Elks. He worked with the Sask. Wheat Pool alongside his dad and some of his brothers. In the mid 60's he went to work at the PA Correctional Center where he found his true calling as the Aboriginal Liason. When he retired he had served 35 1/2 years. He loved spending all of his spare time with his beautiful grandbabies. Donations in Bill's memory may be made to a charity of donor's choice. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, October 22 from St. Alban's Cathedral -1410 Bishop McLean Crescent. Reverend David Smith will officiate.
