PENNOCK, Donna On October 14, 2009 Donna Pennock passed away after a long battle with cancer at the age of 58 years. DRINKWATER, Charles Leslie (Les) July 18, 1905 - October 14, 2009 With fond and loving memories, we announce the loss of a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and best friend. We have great joy in knowing that he has gone to be with his Heavenly Father who he loved and faithfully served. He peacefully went to meet his Saviour who promised him a mansion in heaven (John 14:1-2). Left to cherish his memory is his wife Ivy (Cass); five children: Leonard (Dail), Betty (John), Carol (Ron), Shirley, James (Deanna); four stepchildren: Betty Jean (Morris), Linda (Ron), Roger (Bonnie), Debra (Chris); eleven grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, as well as many dear relatives and friends. Les was predeceased by his first wife Mabel (Dubie) on October 9, 1984 and his sister Hilda in 1991. McINTYRE, Glenn Carey October 17, 1965 ~ October 15, 2009 Surrounded by his family, Glenn passed away at the age of 43. Glenn is survived by his daughter Chelsey and her mother Lisa Knight; his mother Carole; his father Gary (Deb); his brother Robb (Fern) and children Rianne and Ryan; his sister Lisa "Gaye" (Maynard) their children Kaylla, Colton and Kyle. BRINNEN William (Bill) James 1942 - 2009 Bill passed away on October 10th in Nanaimo Hospital. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife Glenna; his sons, Mike (Therese) of Smithers, and Christopher (Karri) of Kelowna; his daughter Whitney Christie (Tony) of Quesnel; his stepdaughter Kelly of Parksville; and his stepson Lee Perkins (Koko) of Coquitlam; 11 grandchildren; his sisters Marianne Hall (John) of Comox and Pat Stafford (Jeff Christianson) of Vanderhoof. Bill also leaves behind nieces, nephews and many very close friends. He is predeceased by his first wife Joann, and mourned by his second wife/friend Barb (nee Rankin). He is predeceased by parents Cecil and Mary Brinnen. Bill grew up in Prince George and began a career with the Ministry of Forests in his early 20's. His career had him moving throughout north central B.C. ending in Burns Lake as a District Manager until he retired in 1997; after which he moved to the Comox Valley, where he met and married Glenna, eventually settling in Parksville. A Celebration of Life will take place at the Knox United Church in Parksville at 2 p.m. on Sunday , October 25. IRVIN Elinor Rose (Pitt) Born November 19, 1926 in Rossland, BC, passed away October 10, 2009 in Ladner, BC. Elinor was the eldest of four: sisters, Bernice Fletcher (Kelowna), Thelma Johnstone (White Rock) and brother Jack Welsh (Courtenay). She married Robert Smith Irvin (deceased July 14, 2009) on March 1st, 1946 (63 years). Bob and Elinor had 4 children and 2 grandsons. LEMIRE Ulysse (Buddy) Joseph Buddy Lemire, age 82 of Surrey, BC passed away peacefully at Surrey Memorial Hospital. Buddy is survived by his loving wife Elaine, his daughter Judy and husband Steve, sister Armande, brother Ted, 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. MCLACHLAN Alexander November 29, 1922 - October 11, 2009 Al (Alex) passed away peacefully at the age of 86 years, predeceased by his daughter Judy on January 4, 1950. (Luke 23:43) He was born in Glasgow Scotland, came to Vancouver at a young age, where he spent the majority of his life. He is survived by his wife of 65 years Nell, one daughter Mary Ann (Jack) two grandsons Kirk (Chelsea) and Jordan, one granddaughter Sandra (Jag) and four great grandchildren. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who remember him fondly, as well as close friends. His boys' greatest memories were taking the #3 Main bus with Grandpa to all their favourite spots in downtown Vancouver. Al was a construction electrician by trade, a 40 year member of the I.B.E.W. Union Local 213. He was present at the founding convention of the CCF, now known as the New Democrat Party and remained a loyal supporter throughout his life. Al was an avid fan of all sports. He was a popular guy and could be found either at the racetrack on weekends or at Fraser and 49th with his cronies. He loved Hastings Park and spent many happy days there. His favourite horse was "Princess Alex" (his namesake). There will be no funeral by request. Instead there will be a private family gathering at his special place to celebrate his life. He was a wonderful Grandpa, a great Dad, a good friend and we will all miss him. Very special thanks to the nursing staff at Gillis House in Merritt, BC for their wonderful care during Dad's last year. O'NEILL George Edward July 25, 1927 - September 16, 2009 It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of our dear friend George O'Neill who passed away in Langley Memorial Hospital from a stroke, aged 82 years. George was predeceased by his parents Patrick and Jane O'Neill (nee Morris) and his sisters Kathleen (Australia) and Clara (U.K.). He is survived by his only child Deborah Yarham (Mike) and grandson Dillon Yarham currently residing in England. Also grandchildren Jessica (Nick) and family. and Lance Guest of Chilliwack. George was born in Shavington cum Gresty, Chester, England and emigrated to Canada arriving on February 24, 1949 on the S.S. Empress of France at age 21. He had previously served with the armed forces in Europe in world War II. George worked faithfully for Seaspan International for 30 years on the tug boats before retiring from them in 1992. George will be remembered for his kindness, generosity and loyalty: a dear man and a dear friend. He leaves behind two sisters, Margaret in Sask. and Eileen (U.K.). Also niece, Lynne and her children Dwayne, Darren (Kelley), Kelly (Cindy) and Trina (Kevin) and family. George wished to be cremated. His ashes were returned to England with his daughter. RUSTH Seth Eugene It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Seth Eugene Rusth, our father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, surrounded by the love of his family at McKinney Hospice in Maple Ridge, B.C. Born in Olso, Norway, December 19, 1919, he lived through occupied Norway during WW2. He moved to Canada in 1952. Seth was a custom upholsterer by trade. He was predeceased by is wife Aase. DEAN Roger Wardner In Loving Memory March 31, 1946 - October 11, 2009 It is with regret that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and good friend, Roger Dean on October 11, 2009 at the young age of 63 years. Roger leaves behind, his loving wife of 39 years, Velma, his daughter Carmen (Jason) Day, grandchildren: Ruby and Maddock, his father Alan (Kathleen), brother Jamie (Jan), his sister Jennifer (Ross) Blair, nieces, nephews and many good friends. Roger was predeceased by his mother Jean in 1998. Roger was born and raised in Vancouver, he relocated to Kamloops from Richmond in 1995 and enjoyed everyday here in Kamloops; he loved what was offered here from the ski hill to the great golf courses. He was a proud member of Kamloops Masonic Lodge No. 10, Gizeh Shriner's and the Kamloops Shrine Motor Corps, he had always said that he loved to ride so that others could walk. Roger left us on the 13th fairway doing what he loved to do and he will be sadly missed by all those he knew and whose lives he had touched. A Service to Celebrate Roger's life will be held at 2:00 pm, October 25th 2009 at the Rivershore Estates and Golf Links. OSACHOFF K August 26, 1942 - October 5, 2009 It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of K, at the Boundary Hospital, in Grand Forks, B.C. with his family at his side. K is survived by his loving wife Joyce, sons Darryl, and Ryan (Michelle), Sister-in-law Mary of Cranbrook, Nieces Bev of Richmond, Shelly Makaoff (Frank, son Tyler) of Richmond, Sheena (Ian) of Vernon and Aunty Lucy Popoff of Shoreacres, numerous cousins, brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. K was born in Nelson, B.C. at the Kootenay General Hospital. His early ambitions were involved with studies at the Kootenay School of Fine Art in Nelson and the San Miguel Instituto de Allende, Guanajuato Mexico. The progressive artistic enjoyment assisted K with his career in the mining industry at the Phoenix and Granisle copper mines. K always held close the love and pride felt for his family, while growing up in Slocan Park, career years in Granisle and the relaxing time in Grand Forks. He had taken pleasure remembering the many friends and acquaintances along the way. K will always be remembered and truly missed as a kind, honest and loving man who wittingly added a twist of humour to all of life's challenges. May he continue to "whistle" while enjoying his next chapter. Predeceased by father Nick, mother Helen and elder brother Paul. DWORKIN, Sara Peacefully at the Glebe Centre, Ottawa, on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at the age of 99. Sara was the manager of the former Astor Chapeaux hat shop on Rideau Street for many years. One of six children of Louis and Annie Dworkin, she was predeceased by sisters Nellie Gold and Yetta Scheinine and brothers Sam, Leonard, and Ben Dworkin. She was the beloved aunt of Pearl and Alfred Rudin, Larry and Julie Dworkin, Stephen and Carol Dworkin, Sydney and Yael Dworkin, Michael Scheinine, Allan Scheinine and Alan Gold, as well as numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. DEGLOW , Isobel Mary September 3, 1928 - October 16, 2009 We would like to celebrate the life of Isobel Deglow who passed away peacefully on Friday, October 16, 2009 at the age of 81 years. The youngest of three children, Isobel was born in Oxford, Nova Scotia. Upon completion of high school, Isobel spent six weeks at Normal College before starting her first teaching assignment where she taught twelve students from grades one to eight in a one-room school house that was heated by a large pot-bellied stove. She spent two years of summer school at the Dalhousie University when, during a teacher shortage in 1953, Isobel and a friend decided to come West. The two young teachers figured they would come, teach for a couple years, go to the Calgary Stampede and then go to Cuba before returning back to Nova Scotia. They were to start that fall. Plans quickly changed, however, when Isobel met her future husband, Lester. Isobel and Lester were married in 1954. Two years later, the real adventures began as first Lynne, then Sharon, Lorraine, Sue and Ross arrived. Isobel then became a full-time, stay-at-home mom where she shared her love of children with her own family. With five children in tow, many wonderful adventures soon began. From camping vacations to holidays in Mexico, Isobel was always ready for the next family gathering. As the family grew and grandchildren started to arrive on the scene, Isobel and Lester's home continued to be the "gathering place". The backyard became the center for every sport imaginable; the "kitchen table" the place to connect, converse, play games and laugh together. Through a lifetime of memories and devotion to her family, Isobel was a remarkable woman who will always be remembered for her unending support, acceptance of others, patience and the strength with which she faced life's challenges. Her love knew no bounds. Isobel is survived by her husband, Lester; her children: Lynne (Bill) Cunningham, Sharon (Randy) Pollyck, Lorraine (Gord) Rogers, Sue Campbell and Ross (Tamara) Deglow; nine beloved grandchildren, and many other friends and family. Il était l'époux de Carol Hanlan «Sangster» et le fils de feu Henry Hanlan et de feu Mabel Steven. JACKSON, Jessie Passed away peacefully on October 9, 2009 at the age of 97. Jessie was born in Ottawa to the late Frederick and Alice Jackson. Predeceased by her sister Elizabeth (John) and brothers Fred (Jackie), Herb (Margaret) and Charles. She was retired from the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and was a longtime member of Rideau Park United Church. Jessie has left us with many wonderful memories. She has a special place in our hearts, and we will miss her very much. There will be a private family service followed by interment at Capital Memorial Gardens. Our sincere thanks and appreciation to Gail and to the staff of the Perley and Rideau Veterans' Health Centre for their loving care and many acts of kindness. HOWARD , Elsie Margaret Miss Elsie Margaret Howard, age 100 years, resident of Versa Care, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 13, 2009. Born on January 17, 1909 in Calgary, Alberta, she was raised and educated there. She was employed at the order desk with CIP Paper Company in Calgary and retired after forty-seven years of service. Elsie was a very strong adherent to the United Church of Canada and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was past Matron of North Star Chapter No. 34 in Calgary, Alberta and Past Grand Marshall of the Grand Chapter of Alberta. She is survived by her niece Marilyn Hicklin, great-nephews Rob (Adena) and their children Cameron and Karli and Jim (Deanna) and their children Taylor and Olivia, nephew John Howard (Vicki) of Barrie, Ontario, great-niece Alison (Drew) Currie and their children Matthew and Marlee, great-nephew Sean (Samantha) Howard and their children Theron and Autumn of Roseneath, Ontario and great-niece Sara (John) Sowell of Greenboro, South Carolina. She was predeceased by her father John Francis Howard in 1923, her mother Minnie in 1965, brother Edward John in 1953 and younger brother Robert (Bert) James in 1999. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service for family and friends as well as Interment in Burnsland Cemetery in Calgary will be held at a later date. KUMAR, Ramesh December 5, 1944 - October 14, 2009 On October 14, Ramesh Kumar of Edmonton passed peacefully at the age of 64 years old. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Punam Kumar Gill and son-in-law Gurtej Gill, as well as his many lifelong friends from Mill Woods. Ramesh was born and raised in Kapurthala, Punjab, India. He studied at Randhir College, Khalsa College Amritsar as well as The National Physical College Patiala, where he was renowned as a skilled basketball player. He moved to Canada in 1973 and settled in Edmonton. He started a driving school in Mill Woods called Punam Driving School. In his thirty years as a driving instructor, Ramesh taught countless students, mostly new immigrants, how to drive. He had a God-given gift for teaching, and most of his students came to him through word of mouth. A kind-hearted, humble man, Ramesh led a simple and content life. He was always first to donate time and money. He leaves a legacy of love, laughter, and peace to every person he met in his life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Grey Nuns Hospital. SCHERBAN, Mary Ellen (Mel) nee McGrath Mary Ellen, born October 21, 1941 in Notikewin, Alberta, passed away peacefully on October 08, 2009 in Duncan, BC. Growing up as an only child to Bill and Magdalene (Babe) McGrath in Northern Alberta, Mel garnered life long friendship with the "Dizzy Dames"; a group of girls that never forgot each other. After leaving the Peace River country, she went to work for the airlines as a travel agent. Her job led her to Chicago for a few years, before returning her to Alberta's capital, Edmonton. Both the airlines and her adventurous spirit brought her to the world as she frequented Europe, Africa, South America, and the Middle East, but her most treasured destination was to her husband, John. Mel eagerly took on the role of mother and homemaker to her and John's four children whom they raised together in Edmonton enjoying many happy holidays, vacations, and social gatherings. Upon retiring, Mel and John moved to Duncan, BC. When she was not volunteering, Mel could be found at bridge club, knitting club, doing extensive needlework, caring for her dog, or researching her family tree. She will be lovingly remembered by John; their children Linda, Jeff (Myriam), Jennifer (Jason), Katie (Alex); their nine grandchildren; and other family and friends. A Mass of Resurrection to celebrate Mel's life was held at St. Edward's Church, 2085 Maple Bay Road, Duncan, BC, Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at 11:00am. Father Frank Franz O.M.I. Celebrant. ISAAK Elvin Elvin passed away Wednesday, October 14th, 2009 in Lloydminster. Elvin was born February 12, 1931 in Arnaud Manitoba, the second of six children. The family moved to Saskatchewan when Elvin was a child eventually settling on a farm near Glenbush. Elvin attended elementary and high school in Medstead followed by two years of Bible College in Hepburn. After moving to Saskatoon, Elvin began a 26 year career as a City Transit Bus Operator. During this time he met and married Shirley Shakotko, raising a family of four children. In 1979 Elvin and Shirley moved to Lloydminster to build and operate a motel, renovate several homes, work in Real Estate, and work at several businesses. Throughout his life, Elvin's passion was working in the building and construction industry as a finishing carpenter. Elvin will be missed by his loving wife, Shirley Isaak and children: Lorne Isaak, Donna (Bob) Hawes, Lloyd (Darla) Isaak, Valerie (Mark) Teed; and grandchildren: Nicole (Cam) Berg and David Isaak; Michael (Latisha), Stephen (Kelsey), and Mark Hawes; Sara Isaak; Robert and Witney Teed. Interment and memorial service for family and friends will be held in Glenbush, SK at a future date. GEOFFREY Geoff RALPH TAYLOR Geoff Taylor, age 63, passed away peacefully at St. Paul's Hospital on Thursday, October 15, 2009. He is loved and remembered by his mother, Phyllis of Calgary; daughters, Phyllis of Calgary and Cindy of Olds; and special daughter, Kim (Donavan) Williams of Red Deer; grandchildren, Krysta and Selina; sisters, Gwendolyn Kirkham and Jacqueline Eligh, both of Calgary and Christine (Mike) McBryan, of Cowichan Bay, BC; numerous nieces and nephews; special friends, Mary, Mike and Chad Cosby; and Betty Dahlseide. ANDERSON Madelon Grace Born November 14, 1946 passed away suddenly on October 14, 2009. Pre-deceased by her son Kevin (2002) Madelon leaves behind her loving husband Terry, Son Richard and Grandchildren Bailey and Brendan. Also left to mourn are her sister Lorraine (Husband Ross and family) and Sister Noreen Brickwood (and family). Madelon was a pivotal member of the family always caring and always sharing her wisdom and advice. Madelon's career in banking was with the Royal Bank of Canada for most of her working years. Recently retired from the bank she spent all of her time loving and caring for her family that included two much loved beagles. Madelon valiantly fought the battle of her life after being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in June of 2008. The family is grateful to friends and loved ones who supported and helped in her trying times; in particular Dr. Sophie Sun of the BC Cancer Agency who consistently pushed the envelope of available treatments to extend Madelon's life and granting her wish of being able to enjoy this past summer. Madelon enjoyed visiting Europe and her beloved Paris with her husband but mostly enjoyed her many family trips to Maui where she and husband Terry renewed their wedding vows this past January at sunset on her favorite Wailea beach where the above photo was taken. We thank the many caring staff at the BC Cancer Agency for their positive and caring demeanor and for making her as comfortable as possible during her many visits. Having lost so much, loved so much and given so much there is a peace in the knowledge that she is at rest and at last reunited with her beloved first born son. The bells Madelon so loved hearing at the Queens Avenue United Church will ring in her honor at a memorial service on Thursday, October 22nd at 1pm. CASEY Armand Joseph It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our loving husband, father, and grandfather Armand "Casey". A decorated Second World War hero, he passed away after a courageous fight with cancer at the age of 85. He fought valiantly for our freedom during the war as a Canadian Forces soldier. His passion for the water allowed him to work on the waterfront as a longshoreman for over 30 years. One of his favorite pastimes was spending time with friends at Hastings Racecourse. He will be remembered with love by his wife Nita of 44 years, his daughter Lisa (Dan), sons Randy and Brian (Isabel). He was a loving grandfather to Ralphie, Isabella, David and Derek. Casey will always be alive in the memories of his friends and family as a kind and loving person. GANDY Leland Edwin (Lee) 1926 - 2009 Lee slipped away quietly in his sleep at Queen's Park Hospice on October 9. Lee will be greatly missed by Fran, his wife of 58 years, his sons, Stephen (Liz) and Mark (Diane), brother, Eldy (Marge), 7 grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Born in Brock, Sask; retired in New Westminster, BC; owner of Gandy's Home Hardware in Kitsilano for 59 years.
