DOSTAL, Julius - Unexpectedly, but peacefully at home in his sleep at the age of 96 years on Sunday, October 4, 2009. Predeceased by his parents Frank and Mary and his son Ron (2006). LAWSON, Velma Florence (nee Dunham) - 1912-2009 - Passed away on Friday, October 2, 2009 at McNally House, Grimsby, in her 98th year. She was pre- deceased by her husband of 69 years, Wilfred ‘Dyke' Lawson in 2005. Loving mother of Jacqueline (George) Thomas. Velma also treasured the special friendship and helpfulness of Leonard and Vera Bailey. PENNEY, Gerald (Jerry) - After saying goodnight to his loved ones, Jerry passed away peacefully at home early Sunday October 4, 2009 at the age of 67. He displayed courage, grace, and dignity throughout his battle with cancer. Jerry enjoyed 8 years of retirement after 36 years at the G.M. engine plant. FREELANDT, Josepha (Dantonello) - In loving memory of Josepha Freelandt (Omi) who passed away peacefully October 4th after a lengthy illness at home. Born in Germany in 1920, she married Victor in 1947. They immigrated to Canada in 1951. Omi was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She devoted her life to her family and was always able to give them wise council. Omi could make something great out of very little, she also had the ability to see the right answer to the many challenges her family encountered. She always gave, not expecting to receive. Born in Finland, George worked 40 years as a miner in Manitouwadge and Elliot Lake, retiring from Rio Algom in 1997. He enjoyed the outdoors, moose hunting, fishing and picking blueberries. George was an avid curler, a fan of the Olympics and he was proud of building his own home on Paddy Lake. He took great joy spending time with his 6 grandchildren. MENARD, Maurice Formerly of Elliot Lake, Ontario Born January 14, 1930, to Alphonse and Dona (Mayer) Menard, Maurice passed away on Sunday, October 4, 2009 in Ottawa, after a brief battle with cancer. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Jeannette (Filion), and his loving sons Marc (Liz Good) of Toronto, Claude (Connie Smeaton) of Chilliwack, BC, Gilles (Sylvain Angers) of Montreal, and Luc (Yvonne Rainville) of Elliot Lake, as well as four granddaughters Laura, Catherine, Brittany and Carolyn, and by his sister Pierrette and brother Eugene, both of Ottawa. POULIN, Roger R. 1938-2009 Roger passed away on October 4th, 2009. He wanted to thank his many close friends and neighbors, and former Public Service colleagues (Ottawa and Vancouver), for past kindnesses, friendship and support. He also expressed his appreciation for medical staff at the Ottawa Hospitals (oncology, palliative care, surgical and emergency services). He most regretted having so little time to enjoy his retirement with friends and family, particularly grandchildren, and a last trip to Barbados. FRASER , William Lawrence William Lawrence Fraser passed away October 3, 2009 after a short illness. Born in Calgary in 1929, he spent most of his life there before relocating to Victoria, B.C. in 1997. Dear husband of Elizabeth Anne Fraser, Bill leaves two children - Nancy Elizabeth Fraser (Bruce Mathews) of Edmonton and Gordon William Fraser (Michelle) of Calgary, and three grandchildren, Tristyn, Jack and Jessica. Bill graduated from UBC with a BASc in electrical engineering in 1953. He began employment immediately with Calgary Power Ltd. (now TransAlta Utilities Corporation) and held many positions before retiring in 1991 as a Senior Vice-President. During his career, Bill was active in his profession. In particular he served for seven years on the Council of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA) and was President for the 1982/1983 year. Bill also served as a Director and member of the Executive Committee of the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers (CCPE). PERRY, Markwell James - It is with great sadness, the family of Markwell James Perry announce his passing, on Monday, October 5th, 2009, at the Brantford General Hospital. After a valiant effort, he succumbed peacefully, with his loving son and daughter, Douglas and Laurene, and his daughter-in-law Susan at his side. Dedicated husband of Nan for 66 years, and beloved grandfather of Dante Winkler and his wife Paula, Markwell and Kathryn Ottolino-Perry and Evelyne Perry. Step-brother to William Perry and mentor and friend to Wayne Watson. Mark served as President of the Royal Canadian College of Organists and in 2005 was appointed Honourary President of the R.C.C.O. He was past President and Honourary Member of the Ontario Registered Music Teacher's Association. Past Vice President of the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers. Markwell was a dedicated teacher of piano, organ and theory, many of whose students have gone on to professional careers in music. He was past President and Honourary member of the Brantford Symphony Orchestra. He was a founding member of the Brantford Kiwanis Music Festival and in recognition of this volunteer service was appointed an Honourary Member of the Brantford Kiwanis Club. He was also an Honourary Member of the Brantford Musicians Association, local 467. For 53 years Mark was the Music Director at Colborne Street (Heritage) United Church and for more than 4 decades served as chapel organist at Beckett-Glaves Family Funeral Centre. Through all these years Mark helped lift the spirits of families as they faced the loss of loved ones. KALIN, Jaffa Lea (nee Mittelman) Passed away Saturday October 3, 2009 in hospital, in the presence of family, after a full life of 85 years. Beloved wife of Isadore (Yitzhak) of 61 years. Dear mother of Meyer, Zev both of Ottawa and Rena of Israel. Honoured teacher of Hebrew and Yiddish for 60 years to children and adults which was the joy of her life. Survived by extended family in Israel. Born in Poland January 1924, she masqueraded as a Ukrainian Catholic to survive the Holocaust (Shoah). She became and remained very active in Holocaust memorial events. She will be remembered by all that she came in contact with. She touched the lives of thousands and will be sorely missed by the many who loved her. GIBSON , James (Jim) October 1, 1933 - October 2, 2009 James Gibson passed away peacefully at the Rosedale Hospice on Friday, October 2, 2009 at the age of 76 years. He will be loved and missed by his daughter Heather (Darcy); his sons, Kim (Anna), Kevin (Sue), Kerry and Kurt (Victoria); and his grandchildren Randy, Monique, Quinn, Devin, Hayden, Dillon, Chad, Keaton, Emily, Marshall, Leighton, and Kourtney. He was predeceased by his mother Doris, his father James; and his brothers, Gordon and John. Jim worked with Sun Life for forty-six years and received numerous awards throughout that time for his proud service and commitment. He was actively involved with his sons' and grandchildren's many sports teams. Jim loved his trips to Maui as well as spending time with friends and family. Jim was an active member of AA and 1835 House where he mentored and counselled many through their addiction challenges. Jim and his family are very proud of his achievement of twenty-four years of sobriety. Florence LeBlanc 1925-2009 Au foyer de soins ProTem à Moncton, le mardi 6 octobre 2009, est décédée Florence LeBlanc, âgée de 83 ans. Née le 18 décembre 1925 à Saint-Paul, NB, elle était la fille de feu Gilbert et Alma (Bastarache) Bernard. Elle laisse dans le deuil cinq fils: Allain (Gaylene) de Cambridge, NS, Leonard (Bernice) et Guy (Rosa), tous deux de Moncton, Bernard (Rhoda “Fern”) de St. Catharines, ON, Michel (Lise) de Dubai; une sœur : Évangéline Bernard de Nouvelle-Écosse; un frère: Emile (Jeanne) de Hartford, CT, 12 petits-enfants et 13 arrière petits-enfants. Elle est précédée dans la tombe par son époux, Oscar LeBlanc, et trois sœurs: Edith, Dora and Anita. La famille recevra les condoléances au Salon funéraire Frenette, 88, rue Church à Moncton (858-1900). Les funérailles auront lieu en l’église Christ-Roi le vendredi 9 octobre 2009 à 11h. L’inhumation se fera dans le cimetière Notre-Dame-du-Calvaire à Dieppe. Heures de visite le jeudi de 14h à 16h et de 19h à 21h, et le mercredi, dès 10h jusqu’à l’heure du départ (10h45). McWATTERS, Maurice Alvin Passed away peacefully, on Sunday, October 04, 2009, in the company of his family after a short illness and just shy of his 92nd birthday. Predeceased by Jean his beloved wife after a loving marriage of 67 years. Cherished father of Dorothy, Janis and her husband Jim Barnett, Grayley and his wife Maria Revelis, and Susie and her husband John MacDiarmid. Forever remembered by his grandchildren David Fisher and his wife Sarah Oliver, Sara Pedersen and her husband Daniel, Gillian Fisher, Andrew Fisher, Christopher Barnett and his wife Tanya Dawson, Melissa Fisher, Matthew Barnett and his partner Erin Eirrell-Contant, Josh and Joel McWatters and their mother Catherine French. Loving great-grandfather of Alex, Sam and Scott Barnett, Oliver Fisher and Ross and Beatrice Fisher. He will be sadly missed by his sister Aldene McLinton and her husband Glen, and Ron, Sherry McLinton and Linda Mullins. He had a strong work ethic and believed in always trying your best. He had a long career in electrical contracting from his early years owning his own business to supervising large projects for Bedard Gerard and ended his career at Black and McDonald. He and Jean moved from Toronto to Smiths Falls in 1950 and raised their young family there until they moved to North Gower in 1970. In North Gower he and Jean enjoyed life in a small community and were involved in many activities. For many years he volunteered with the Arthritis Society and he supported Jean in her many pursuits. He loved the quiet of the cottage on Dalhousie Lake and he and Jean maintained large gardens both there and in North Gower. He was a problem solver and believed anything could be fixed and loved to work with his hands on his many hobbies. Coming from humble beginnings it was his greatest wish that his children have the opportunity to pursue higher education and he and Jean were rewarded by attending many graduations of children and grandchildren at all levels of post secondary education. He was a man of few words but the bedrock of the family whose values influenced us all. He was always a supportive father and grandfather and we are saddened by his passing. We want to express our thanks to the nursing and medical staff at Queensway Carleton Hospital who cared for him so compassionately these last weeks and who supported the family as we faced his death. He supported many charities and if so desired, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Arthritis Society or Holy Trinity Anglican Church would be appreciated by the family. Friends will be received on Wednesday from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m., at the Lee Cummings Funeral Home, North Gower. Funeral service on Thursday at 2 p.m. in Holy Trinity Anglican Church North Gower.
