JOHNSTON, Christine Leigh - passed away at Mt. Sinai Hospital, Toronto, after a brief but very courageous battle with cancer on Friday, August 28, 2009, in her 60th year. A long time resident of Tweed, ON, Christine was predeceased by her mother Eileen, also of Tweed, and brothers Terry and Tom. Forever loved by brother William (Nancy), and sisters Sharon Fairchild, Jeanette Levesque (Lou), Andrea Johnston- Roche (Phil), Maureen Hodge (Scot), Charlene Keen, and sister-in-law Peggy Shaw. Funny, loving, crazy Auntie Chris will be fondly remembered by nieces and nephews Craig (Yuriko), Jill (Rob), Vanessa (Oliver), Eric, Noel (Ann-Marie), Laura (Jay), Carrie (Matt), Candice (George), Kelly (Mark), Paul (Tracy), Alex, Marc, Emily (Brian), Adrien, and Dean, and her 20 great- nieces and nephews. Loved niece of Mrs. Geraldine Strome of Winnipeg, MB, and Mrs. Jean Dzaman of Innisfil, ON, always fondly remembered by cousin Paul Strome and family. Beloved husband of the late Phyllis (nee Bland) and Lou (nee Grammar). Brother to Enid Hillman and brother-in-law to Ron Hillman of Keswick, the late Ken Carwright and sister-in-law Gloria Cartwright of Calgary and the late June Dickey of Barrie. Father to Dennis and Richard Cartwright, Lynda Zadan, Darlene Fortag and to step-daughters, Laurie and Lisa. Grandfather to Joe-Dan, Jenny-Lee, Dara- Lynn Fortag, John, Kirk and Luke Zadan, Meghan, Sean, Erica, Jesse, Cade and Zach Cartwright. Lifelong employee of Ontario Hydro and Property Officer with Eastern Region Office in Belleville, working on projects all over Ontario. ROBB, Charles (Charlie) - 1941-2009. After a short illness Charlie died peacefully on Thursday, August 27, 2009, in the Peterborough Regional Health Centre. He will be missed s much by Shelia, wife of 48 years, sons, Kirk and Dale, daughter Debbie and husband Barry and grandson Carson: his two sisters, Jean, Louise and husband Roger, predeceased by his brother Jim and sister Lorraine. SINOPOLI, Frank - In Loving Memory of Frank Sinopoli, 1944 - 2009. The family announces with sorrow the unexpected passing of Frank Sinopoli at his home on Sunday, August 30th, 2009 at the age of 65. Beloved husband of Marlene (nee Pulice) and loving step father of Deborah and Gilles St. Jean. Survived by his sister Mary Rubino (Sam) his nephews Vito Rubino, Frank and Mario Lanzellotti, his niece Tina Poitras (Ray) and their children Lexia, Emma and Gabriel. Also survived by his mother-in-law Margie Pulice, sisters in law Gina Tonelli (Gary), Loretta Pulice, Judy Marchildon and Lisa Robski (Stan) and brothers in law Gary Pulice (Suzanne), John Pulice (Helen) and their families. Frank was predeceased by his parents Antonio and Fortunata Sinopoli, sisters Rosina Lanzallotti, Cecilia Sinopoli and an infant brother Gregory. He was also predeceased by his father-in-law Rocco Pulice. He leaves behind his loving and constant companion, his dog, Maggie. Frank was born in Timmins and spent all of his 65 years on MacDonald Hill. As a young man, Frank worked at Chick's Texaco and Goodyear. He was self-employed as a trucker for many years and before retirement was an employee of Timmins Gravel. Frank was a staunch Montreal Canadians fan, enjoyed playing cards, coaching broomball, watching sports, fishing, woodworking, cooking and keeping his grounds in A-1 condition. Frank was an active member of the Knights of Columbus at St Joachim's Parish known as “the sausage man”. He will be missed by his coffee buddies at the House of Yee. Remembrance donations for St. Joachim Memorial fund would be gratefully acknowledged by the family. ST LAURENT, John of Bayshore Dr. Bathurst, NB, which occurred Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at the age of 65 years at Chaleur Regional Hospital. Born in Bathurst, NB, he was the son of late Louis and Palmire (Guerette) St Laurent. John moved to Ottawa as a young man and over the years owned a number of salons. At retirement, he was owner of Bayshore Hair Stylist and SPA in Ottawa. He moved back to Bathurst in 2006. He is survived by his wife; Rachel Scott, One son; Jean Marc of Red Deer, AB, One daughter; Michelle (Robert) Hay of Ottawa. Three sisters; Jeannine (Myles) Barron of Surrey, BC, Patricia (Raymond) Robichaud of Athol Mass., USA, Elizabeth (Peter) Scichilone of Bathurst, NB. 3 grandchildren; Emily, Jordan and Jessica. HOWSE , Louise Mildred (nee Denny)1939 - 2009 Louise went home to her Lord and Saviour on Friday, August 28, 2009 after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer. She leaves her daughter Patti (Chris) Phipps, grandson Justus - the apple of her eye, her furry companion Corky, and many extended family and dear friends. Louise will always be remembered for living life to the fullest - from driving semis to having race horses as well as travelling with family and friends. She enjoyed all that life had to offer and never let an opportunity to have fun with family or friends go by. Louise's strength came from her strong faith, which she always demonstrated and was never afraid to share. Louise will be dearly missed, but never forgotten. SMYTH , Dorothy Eileen 1927 - 2009 Dot Smyth passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at her home. She was born on May 15, 1927 in Consort, Alberta. Dianne was born in Calgary, AB and moved to Winnipeg as a young child. She was married in Winnipeg on June 27, 1957, and moved back to Calgary in 1976. DIANA MAY ROSS Monday, 31 August 2009 - 1:51pm Diana May Ross, 85, of Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Friday, Aug. 28, 2009 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances. Diana was born May 22, 1924 in Sussex, England to Charles and Frances Powell. She spent her childhood and early adult years in England, training to become a nurse. In 1942, she was married to John James Ross. She came to Canada a war bride, settling in Rainy River, Ont. in July, 1946. In 1954, the family moved to Fort Frances. Diana was a member of the Rebekah Lodge for many years. In her spare time she loved going for walks, bowling, and gardening. She was predeceased by her husband, John, in 1961; parents, Charles and Frances Powell; son, Colin Stuart Ross; sisters, Clara Thomas, Betty Williams, and Vera Riley; and brother, Charles Powell. Diana leaves behind her children, Jacolyn Godin of Whitehorse, Yukon, Susan Ross of Fort Frances, Ont., Deborah Miller (Gordon) of Rivers, Man., Douglas Ross (Sharon) of Edmonton, Alta., Bonnie Ross (Lloyd Williams) of Hamilton, Ont., and Peter (Linda) Ross; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. LABARGE, Margaret Wade (Polly) Peacefully, at home in Ottawa, on August 31, 2009. Born 18 July, 1916 in New York City, the youngest child and only daughter of Alfred B. Wade and Cecilia Helena Mein Wade, she is predeceased by her three brothers, Alfred Munroe, Phillip Treadwell, and Hugh Mason as well as by her husband, Raymond C. Labarge. Proud mother of, and survived by, Claire (John Morris), Suzanne, Charles (Rise Kovalsky), and Paul (Dorothy Speak), grandmother of Sarah and Matthew, Jeremy and Regan, Monica and Emily, and great-grandmother of Seaver and Lucas. Following in the tradition of her mother who was a Sacred Heart Alumna, her long association with the convents of the Sacred Heart began with her first school in New York. When she was 10, her family moved to New Canaan, Connecticut. She attended the convent school at Noroton, near Greenwich, CT and proceeded to Radcliffe College (Harvard University) from which she graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1937. She then attended St. Anne's College, Oxford University, where she read medieval history under the tutelage of the eminent Sir Frederick Maurice Powicke and where she met her future husband Ray. Following graduation from Oxford in 1939, she married Ray June 20, 1940 and moved to Canada where she quickly adapted to her new home. As part of Ray's wartime service, they spent a year and a half in St-Hyacinthe, PQ. At the end of the war, they settled in Ottawa and quickly created their family. In the early 1950's, she began her academic career as a lecturer in medieval history at Carleton University and research on the first of 9 major books, Simon de Montfort, which was. Published in 1962. Her publishing career spanned some 4 decades and her books continue to be reprinted today in several languages. In 1982, she was awarded the Order of Canada for her "ability to bring history to life" and for her "voluntary work in nursing and the care of convalescents, the disabled and the aged." Her volunteering activities culminated in positions as Chair of the Board of Governors of St. Vincent's Hospital and Chair of the Ottawa Council on Aging. She has received numerous awards for both her academic and volunteer work, including honorary degrees from Carleton University, the University of Waterloo, and Mount St. Vincent University, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the Carleton Founders' Award, and First Canadian President of the Canadian Society of Medievalists. While Ottawa has been her home since 1942, she had a very strong attachment to the summer cottage in Farm Point, PQ where she and the family spent many happy summers. In later years, she enjoyed observing the growth and development of her four children, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. CAMPBELL STEWART SMITH Monday, 31 August 2009 - 1:51pm Sadly, I announce the sudden passing of my only son, Campbell Stewart Smith, 63, of Rainycrest Long-Term Care, 550 Osborne Street, Fort Frances, Ont., on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances. Born in Winnipeg, Man. on April 20, 1946, Cam accompanied his parents to Fort Frances in August of 1951. His school years were spent at Robert Moore. His first job was at The Laundromat but he went on to ARC Industries, where he was the chief sawyer of pipe for the local mill. As well, he removed and replaced rivets on aluminum boats. Currently, he was volunteering part-time at Good Impressions Printing. “Travelling Man” described Cam’s desires, beginning with Winnipeg street-car rides with Grandma Smith. Fort Frances mobility followed on a tricycle with dog, Nichimos, a two-wheeler, and finally a moped proudly owned. These allowed him to supervise the Public Works Department at work (as well as to learn some questionable language!) His passenger experience was as an inveterate rider on the Fort Frances Bus Lines, thanks to Mr. Wright, observing truck driving and gearing with Lakehead Freightways, private ride on CN trains, working the yards, many rides with John Myers from the air base, plane rides to the south for Christmas, and delighted always when the occasion called for a taxi. Any trip to another city always included bus rides there. The lake played an important part in summer. Cam ran his boat while Bob Dandeneau fished. Swimming more proficient underwater than on top was regular. He was renowned for his run down the lake steps and across the dock to a loud call of “Geronimo” and a cannon ball into the water—much to the amusement of his visiting cousins. He also curried their favour by making all of them a mean milkshake. Earlier, Cam and his team won an award for an out-of-town bowling competition. Still at it, he currently holds the family’s highest proficiency level in Wii bowling. Winters were consumed by hockey, which was his passion. Muskie men and ladies always first, but any other games he could attend. The Blueline Club presented him with a leather Muskie jacket which displayed on the sleeve “#1 Fan.” He certainly prized that. Barney Maher, Bill Sterns, and others accompanied him to many games. Cam had a remarkable memory; a good trait mostly, but questionable when it concerned something one of us might want to forget. He also enjoyed a keen sense of humour, which was evident in 1959/60 on a school report card saying, “Cammie has quite a sense of humour. He sees the funny side of everything and often surprises the others by his heartfelt laughter.” His deep love and appreciation for any kind of music helped him fill many days. He enjoyed singing and his pleasant voice often could be heard from his neat room as he accompanied the tapes. His dancing was somewhat hampered by three hip replacements, but still he persevered to do the “chicken dance” played especially for him by the monthly Wednesday Night Orchestra group. He always was available and anxious to call a Bingo game, complete with instructions and general patter, or to act as emcee if desired. Cam was predeceased by both sets of his grandparents; his father, John C. Smith Q.C. in Yuma, Az.; his father figure, Frank J. Newstead in Saskatoon, Sask.; and his “second” mother, Florence Challis in Winnipeg, Man. He is survived by his mother, B.E. June Smith (nee Stewart); the Stewart uncles, Paul (Velma) of Virden, Man. and their three children, Michael (Connie) of Calgary, Alta. and their two sons, and Brian (Lilianne) of Elora, Ont. and their five sons; his paternal cousins, Mary Jane (Raymond) Kyle of Thunder Bay, Ont. and their children, Kathleen (Terry) Jorden of Sherwood Park, Alta. and their daughter, Julie (John Tilbury) of Thunder Bay, Ont. and their son, and Erin Kyle of Winnipeg, Man. and three children. Also surviving is his extended family, Robert (Joy) Newstead of Sherwood Park, Alta. and their children, Scott, Andrew, and Laura Jackson, and Richard (Susan) Newstead of Swift Current, Sask. and their children, Jill and Mark; and special friend, Gale C. Niblock (Hugh) of Midland, Ont. Thinking them to sad, Cam avoided funerals. Consequently, the family, staff, and residents of Rainycrest—his 22-year home—welcome anyone to join them in the Hallett Hall at Rainycrest for some tea and a celebration of Cam’s life on Friday, Sept. 4, 2009 from 2-4 p.m. The graveside service will be held at a later date. The honourary pallbearers will be all of his friends and Community Living. ANDERSON, Walter Harold Walter Harold Anderson passed away suddenly in the presence of his family Sunday, August 30, 2009 at the Rockyview General Hospital at the age of 62.
