MARKOVIC, Simo (Sam) - “Gone Fishing” Sam (Simo) Markovic passed away peacefully at the Palliative Care Ward of Bluewater Health in Sarnia on Friday, May 1st, 2009, with his loving wife Helen by his side. Born May 11th 1934 in Srebrenica, Bosna, Sam's determination was notable early in life, escaping from Yugoslavia with his cousin Jerry Jovanovic, immigrating to Canada in 1958 with only a few dollars in his pocket. Honesty and work ethic were important to Sam - despite not having enough money to pay for one of his first meals in Canada (from an understanding and gracious restauranteur), Sam promised to return and pay for the meal once he had landed a job and received his first paycheck - a promise he fulfilled the next week to the astonished restauranteur). These hallmarks of Sam's character were only outshone by his love of family, friends and the outdoors. He was never too busy to lend a helping hand. Sam made his home in Sarnia. This is where he met and wed the love of his life, Helen and where they raised their family. Sam led by example, instilling a sense of compassion and drive in everything he did and forging family bonds through road trips to British Columbia, Prince Edward Island and Florida. Sam forged strong ties and friendships throughout the community after founding Sam's Heating in 1970, and operating it over the next 39 years with the same honesty and dedication. Sam had a passion for the outdoors, exhibited most strongly through his love of fishing - which, to those who knew him well, was an outlet for his passion to know people and take time to laugh. Early morning (5am) fishing with friends, sons, neighbours and grandchildren or anyone he could awaken were not uncommon - although Sam was known to have an afternoon nap on longer fishing trips. Sam is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Helen; his brother, Momcilo and wife Natasha Markovic of Sarnia; children, Jeff and Marnie Markovich, of Houston, Texas, Jim Markovich, of Oakland, California, Brian and Laura Markovich, of New York, New York; grandchildren, Melissa, Amanda and Jonathan Markovich; and nephew Dan Markovic of Toronto. Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Dragan and Zagorka Markovic; sisters Perka and Jela and brother Savo, all of Bosna, and daughter Karen. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 5th from 6:00pm to 9:00pm at SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 1576 London Line, Sarnia. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 6th at 11:00am, also at Smith Funeral Home. The family would like to express their thanks and gratitude to the caring and professional staff of the Palliative Care Ward at Bluewater Health in Sarnia. Il était adoré par sa Bella Peppenella Olivia Bianca, son Shantih toujours fidèle et son cher ami Jean-Claude Estève. Il a été prédécédé par son père Loreto et sa mère Maria Biordi. En Italie, il part pour pleurer ses frères Giovanni (Valentina), Domenico (Margherita), Angelo (Rosa) et sa soeur Liberata (dernier (tardif) Domenico) et beaucoup de ses nièces, neveux et amis. Au Canada et aux États-Unis il a été prédécédé par son beau-père le plus respecté Emilio Mancini, sa belle-mère Maria Antonia, ses beaux-frères tendrement appelés Sante Mancini, Armando Mancini, Domenico Nardozi et tant son beau-frère que "l'associé-dans-le-crime Angelo Zegarelli". BERMACK , Jack February 10, 1927 - May 1, 2009 Jack Bermack, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away on Friday, May 1, 2009, at the Foothills Medical Centre, after a long, brave and valiant battle with a very rare tumour, at the age of 82 years. Jack was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the youngest of five children. He grew up in Winnipeg and moved to Calgary with Warner Bros. in 1948, where he met his bride to be. Jack settled in Calgary, but then work took him and his family to Winnipeg for a few years. Upon their return to Calgary, Jack changed careers and joined the life insurance business. Never shying away from some new challenges, in his later years he went back and qualified in general insurance and he spent twenty-five years with Perma Insurance. His passion for friends, family, hockey, and curling endured right to the end. Jack's infectious warmth and bright smile will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by Sheila, his dear wife of fifty-nine years; his three children, Nadene (Jay), Cheryl (Aaron), and Francine; along with his grandchildren whom he cherished, Stephen (Janice), Aaron, Ben and Emily. Jack was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Esther; his sisters, Myrna and Ann; his brother Jimmy; and his granddaughter Tamara. MARTELL , Christina (Ina) (nee Brown) Christina Martell, aged 89, passed away gently at the Eau Claire Retirement Residence, where she lived for a brief period of time at the end of her life. Ina was born in Calgary in 1919 and lived on the north hill for most of her life. She was a gentle, loving and deeply spiritual person. Although shy and reserved, Ina was liked by all who knew her because of her warmth, gentle demeanor and surprising sense of humour. She loved cats. Ina was married to John Martell for twenty-five years up until the time of his death in 1977. Ina is survived by her sister Mina Shaw (nee Brown) and the two sisters were a constant source of love and support for each other throughout their lives. Ina had no children of her own but played an important and loving role in the lives of her nieces and nephews, Cindy Shaw (Nason), Colleen Novak (nee Shaw) deceased, Brent and Gregg Shaw. She will always be remembered by them. Ina will also be remembered with love by her small and intimate circle of friends with whom she shared a deep spiritual bond and love of God. EVANS , Thomas "Jason" Thomas "Jason" Evans passed away suddenly at the Foothills Hospital on Monday, April 27, 2009 at the age of 38 years. Beloved husband of Nichola and loving father to his two angels Payton and Paisley. Jason will be sadly missed by his parents Tom and Patti; sister Zoe, her son Foxx of Calgary and brother Josh of Costa Rica. Jason will also be missed by in-laws Waltho family and Levesque family, as wellas many friends. Jason's grandmother Margaret Evans followed him in passing on April 29, 2009. He was born and raised in Calgary where he attended school with his final two years at Notre Dame College in Wilcox, SK. Jason's entrepreneurial spirit lead to his successful businesses in construction, mortgage and real estate in both Canada and the U.S. He will always be remembered for his huge heart, generosity, kindness and his larger than life presence and love for his family. EVANS, J. Alan On Thursday, April 30, 2009, of lung cancer at the age of 83. Beloved husband of Noreen (nee Cornish) for 58 years. Caring and supportive father of Pat, Larry and Elaine, and father-in-law of Robert, Sharyn, and Chris. Devoted "Papa" of Laura, Matthew, Emily, Jonathan, and Joshua. Alan was born in Toronto and attended Lawrence Park Collegiate. Upon graduation he attended the University of Toronto, completing a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering in 1948. Bell Canada hired Alan, transferring him to Montreal in 1954. The family lived in Beloeil, Quebec, where he and Noreen made many wonderful lifelong friendships. When Bell transferred them to Ottawa in 1968, they fell in love with the city and new friendships were forged. When Alan took early retirement at age 58, he was then able to pursue his passions full-time. Love of the outdoors, birding, photography, painting, biking, singing (University of Ottawa and Centennial Choirs), attending concerts, genealogy and cross-country skiing continued to keep Alan and Noreen busy until the past year. Regular trips to the cabin on Big Rideau Lake nurtured his soul. He also loved words and until close to the end of his life easily outscored most in Scrabble. He was an activist by nature, and wrote often to politicians concerning issues close to his heart. We will miss him. A celebration of Alan's life will be held at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair and McGarry, 315 McLeod St. on Saturday, May 9, 2009. Visitation will be held from 1:30 pm with a service at 3:00 pm. A reception will follow. PRESCOTT , Charles Henry 1923 - 2009 Charles H. Prescott passed away May 1, 2009 at the Peter Lougheed Centre at the age of 86. Charlie was predeceased by his wife Zola on September 25, 2007, a grandson Michael, a sister Hilda and a brother Robert "Bob". Charlie will be dearly missed by three children Terry Ann Reinhart, Robert "Bob" Prescott (Sharon), all of Calgary and Howard Prescott of Canmore; five grandchildren, Jennifer, Andrew, Jared, Mark (Sarah) and Jordenne (Krystina); and five great-grandchildren, Amy, Dayton, MacKenzie, Amelia and Cecilia. He is also survived by three brothers, Donald, Allen and Frank; and many other relatives and friends. Charlie was born and raised in Kirriemuir, Alberta and was sworn into the RCAF on June 30, 1941 where he served for four years. After graduating from Hollingshead Business College he started working for National Geophysical Co in August, 1952. They were later bought out by Teledyne Exploration of Canada where he continued working as treasurer until his retirement in February, 1988. Charlie married Zola in 1951 and the following year they moved into their home where he resided until his death. Charlie loved camping, square and round dancing, golf, bowling, cards and gardening. He loved people and had a great sense of humour. At the time of his death he was an active member of the Good Companions and a loyal volunteer at the Signal Point Carewest facility. If friends desire, memorial tributes may be made to the Peter Lougheed Center ICU. In keeping with Charlie's wishes, no funeral service will be held. A memorial Graveside Service will be held on Father's Day, Sunday, June 21 in Glenwood, Alberta where he will be interred next to his wife, Zola. BENNER , (nee Curnew) Jorun "Eugene" It is with sadness that the family of Eugene Benner announces her passing. She passed away peacefully on April 30, 2009 after a brief illness at the age of 92 years. Eugene will be lovingly remembered by her children Bill (Susan), Roberta (Phil), George (Brenda), and Glenda (Vic); her grandchildren Chris (Nerin), Matthew and Jean-Pierre "JP". Eugene is survived by her sister Ruth Eastman and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, William Arthur Curnew and by her second husband Elmer Benner. Eugene was born May 2, 1916 in Lemberg, Saskatchewan but was raised in New Westminster, BC. She moved to Calgary in 1955, and it was here that she and Bill raised their family. MAURSTAD , Henry May 30, 1912 - May 1, 2009 Henry Maurstad of Strathmore, Alberta, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2009 at the Strathmore District Health Services, Continuous Care Facility. Henry (son of Mathias and Petra) was predeceased by Dorothy May Godding (August 1992), his wife of fifty years, one brother Oluf and five sisters, Mary, Lena, Annie, Ida and Grace. Henry is survived by sons James (Marianne) of Calabogie, Ontario, and Gary (Shirley) of Wellington, Ontario; grandchildren Pamela (Jean-Pierre), David (Lisa) and Kent (Lauren) of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Garrett (Laura) of Ottawa, and Tamara (Kenny) of Oshawa, Ontario; great-grandchildren Ethan, Amy, Rowan, Jack, Isaiah and Mikayla. Henry was born in Willow City, North Dakota, in May 1912, and came with his family to farm at Nobleford, Alberta, in 1921. Henry met Dorothy in 1939 while both were working for Mr. VanBibber in the Beynon, Alberta area. They were married March 15, 1941. They resided in Calgary (Bowness) and Sundre, Alberta, before moving to the Strathmore District in 1954. Henry worked for the Calgary Rolling Mills, the CPR and Pallison Dairies in Calgary before homesteading in the Sundre area in 1946. He worked road construction and ploughing for the County and was also a partner in a saw and planning mill operation. In the Strathmore area, Henry was employed by local farmers Dave Parker, Alex Peterson of Namaka and Andy Thompson of Stobart. Before retiring in 1979, Henry worked for Les Tiede at the Strathmore Seed Cleaning Plant. In retirement Henry enjoyed curling, Senior Centre activities, travelling and visiting family. EVANSON , Frank Michael January 5, 1917 - April 29, 2009 Frank Evanson of Calgary, AB, passed away on April 29, 2009 at the age of 92 years. Frank was born on January 5, 1917 in Smokey Lake, AB. He worked on the family ranch for many years, obtaining his grade six education in Kingman, AB. Frank operated a trap line and later received his barbers certificate in Edmonton. Frank served his country with the RCAF, overseas in England, perfecting his chosen barbering profession. Upon returning to Canada, Frank established the Petroleum Building Barber Shop, in downtown Calgary which he operated for over thirty-five years retiring in 1980. He married Catherine Windle in 1956 and they resided in Meadowlark Park for many years. Frank's greatest passion was to meet new clients, and discuss world events. He also enjoyed dancing to the sounds of the Big Band Era, as well as to go hunting game birds. Frank was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion (Horton Road) and loved to be in the company of his family and friends. Frank is survived by his loving daughter and son-in-law, Michele Evanson and John MacRobbie; son Jim Evanson; grandchildren, Jamie and Michael Wallace, Megan and Iain MacRobbie; two brothers Walter and Bill; three sisters, Ann, Olga and Cassie as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Catherine. Eunice (nee Allen), Garry's wife and constant companion of 65 years was the light of his life and was by his side. Father of Garry (Sandy) Fee. Stuart, his grandson, who so valued their close relationship. Grandfather to Alison and great-grandfather of Kaelin and Abbey. Predeceased by his brother, Harvey (Jean) of Montreal. Garry served as part of the RCAF Ferry Command and was immensely proud of his career as an Air Traffic Controller at Dorval and Ottawa. Garry's inquiring mind, attention to detail, and sense of humour never diminished. He will be sorely missed yet lovingly remembered by Barbara, Garry, Kate, Steph, Jeff, John, and Randy. The family extends our gratitude for the care and support of the staff at Park Place, CCAC, Carefor, Dr. Susan Gick and the CPCN. Friends and family are invited to visit at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair, and McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Ave. at Richmond Rd. after 12 noon on Wednesday, May 6th 2009 until time of service in the Chapel at 2 pm. A reception will be held following the service. Memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Ottawa Humane Society would be appreciated by the family.
