Vidica was born in Lukovdol, Croatia on June 19, 1927 and she came to Canada in April of 1957. Vida was the beloved wife of Silvester Grisnik and mother of Michael Grisnik (Catharine) of Niagara Falls, Victoria Jong (Gerry) of Cambridge and Jane Cahill (Mark) of Beamsville. Grandma Vida will be sadly missed by her 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Also survived by her sister Kristina Vlasic. CONNELL, Robert George September 26, 1927 - April 9, 2009 Robert G. Connell, beloved husband of Mary of Calgary, passed away on April 9, 2009 at the age of 81 years after a twenty-six month battle with complications following open-heart surgery at the Foothills Hospital. Born in Saskatoon, Bob was a member of the Regina Police Service for over thirty-five years, achieving the rank of Deputy Chief before retiring in 1984. Nicknamed "Rocky" by those he worked with, he distinguished himself by being credited with never taking even one day of sick leave during his entire career. Bob was a dedicated policeman, earning numerous commendations and a medal for bravery while in the line of duty. A true athlete and sportsman during his lifetime, he starred as a running back with the Saskatoon Hilltops before coming to Regina to play for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, but with a young family, chose police work over football. Always an avid sportsman, he excelled in many sports including track, basketball, football, baseball, curling and, especially in retirement, golf. Some of his happiest retirement years were at the Sunnydale Golf Club in the Comox Valley, before moving on to Kamloops, where he made many new and dear friends. Bob was respected and loved by all who knew him. His sense of humour and kindness will be greatly missed. Bob leaves to mourn his loving wife of sixty-one years, Mary and three devoted sons; Lance (Darlene) of Regina, Darrell (Karen) of Warman, and Danen (Kathy) of Cochrane. He is also survived by six treasured grandchildren; Rob (Debbie), Danielle (Jason), Christopher (Chrissie), David (Traci), Kevin (Mandy), Chantelle; six great-grandchildren, Anthony, Nelson, Chloe, Hayden, Ava; and one step-great-granddaughter, Desiree. Bob was predeceased by his father Fred Connell, his mother Sadie and his sister Colleen. He was also sadly predeceased by his two precious dogs, Smokey I and Smokey II. A Celebration of Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S Crowfoot Chapel (82 Crowfoot Circle N.W.) on Tuesday, April 14 at 2:30 p.m. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Agape Hospice, Calgary, or the Calgary Humane Society. Ordonné prêtre le 11 mai 1963, il fut vicaire à la paroisse Ste-Jeanne-d'Arc, aumônier diocésain du S.P.M. et du S.O.F., curé des paroisses Ste-Louise-de-Marillac, Ste-Angèle, St-Vincent-de-Paul de Laval et St-Fabien, aumônier en milieu scolaire et en milieu carcéral. Il laisse dans le deuil ses frères et soeurs, Dr Émile (Yolande Chevalier), Denise (Fernand Chevalier), Marcelle (feu Bernard Benoit), Gisèle (feu Yvon Beaudry), Bernard (Denise Gadoury), nièces et neveux ainsi que plusieurs parents et amis. Bragnalo 2009-04-12 Miss Carly Marie Bragnalo, age 27 years, a resident of Thunder Bay, passed away in Jamaica, on Friday, April 3, 2009, while vacationing with her family. Carly was born and raised in Thunder Bay. She had attended St. Martin‘s Elementary School, St. Patrick‘s High School and Confederation College. Carly was a very caring young lady. She always had time for everyone and made friends quickly wherever she went. She loved her dogs and spending time around her home, and she loved to cook. She also enjoyed traveling, especially to her uncle‘s home in Treasure Beach Jamaica where she had been going since she was ten years old. It was there that she gained her love of reggae music and also where she had many friends. She also loved the summer home on Lambert Island. Carly was a very giving person and had sponsored several children in third world countries. She had recently become involved with charity work with the Vancouver Canucks. She is survived by her parents Brian and Debbie, brother Callen, fiancé Taylor Pyatt, with whom she was to be married to this August, grandparents Carmel and Carl Malanych, Luba LeMarbre (Lorne), uncles Billy Malanych, Alan (Debbie) Malanych and their children Ravyn and Sierra, Gary (Linda) Bragnalo and their children Cory and Stacy, aunt Cindy (Ray) Lavigne, and son Daniel, uncle Mark Bragnalo and numerous other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her grandfather Angelo Bragnalo. The support from the Treasure Beach Jamaica community was overwhelming and Carly‘s family is very appreciative of the support they received following her passing. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 14, 2009 when family and friends will gather for the Funeral Mass in St. Agnes Church at 11:00am celebrated by Rev. James Panikulam. Services will be complete in the church with cremation to follow. Interment will follow at a later date in Mountain View Cemetery. JOHNSON, Wilfred Charles (Chuck) Chuck passed away at the Peter Lougheed Hospital on April 10, 2009 at the age of 78 years. Chuck will be lovingly remembered by his son, Brent (Margret); two granddaughters, Katrina and Samantha; great-grandson, Shane as well as numerous family members and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, wife, Mary and brother, Leonard. Chuck was born and raised in Edmonton. He was a flight officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force and was very involved in The Edmonton Flying Club, and the Aero Space Museum and the Model Boating Club in both Calgary and Edmonton. BERNARDI, Oscar Anthony 2009-04-12 March 13, 1921 – April 9, 2009 It is with great sadness that the family of Oscar Anthony Bernardi announces that after a courageous battle with cancer he passed away at St. Joseph‘s Hospice on the 9th day of April 2009 surrounded by his loving family. Oscar was the son of the late Baretta and Amelia (Tome) Bernardi and attended St. Martin‘s School. He was a member of St. Agnes Church and also received his fourth degree as a member of the Knights of Columbus. He worked in the family grocery store until receiving notice in May 1942 that he was to report to Basic Training at Red Deer Alberta. After serving his country for 31/2 years he was discharged in 1945 and returned home to continue helping with the family business, the Wayland Hotel. In 1945, he met the love of his life, Velma Mary Ariano and they were married on June 15, 1946, celebrating 62 years of marriage. Together they had three children Donald (Mary-Lou), Douglas, and Gladys Berringer (Brian). Oscar was very proud of his seven grandchildren Shane (Kerrie), Mark (Katie), Tim (Katie), Dawn (Mike), Alana Jenereux (Justin), Andrew Berringer (Karen), Jocelyn Berringer (Ryan) and five great grandchildren. Oscar ran the family grocery store in Westfort and then later the Wayland Hotel till it was sold in 1966. He moved to Sioux Lookout and worked for his father-in-law for a brief time before starting work for Lakeland Dairies Ltd. which he managed for six years. He returned to Thunder Bay and worked along side many friends at Canada Car (Bombardier) for a number of years before retiring in March 1986. During his retirement, Oscar enjoyed his many trips to Mesa, Arizona with Velma where he traveled to Laughlin, Vegas and other area casinos. He was very proud of his mobile home and travel trailer and spent hours listening to his music while enjoying a beer and cigar at 4p.m. They made frequent trips to Nogales, Mexico visiting the White Dove Cathedral, Tuscan and The Pecan Outlet on route. While in Arizona he joined friends Torre and Freda Peterson, Joe and Cleo Bruno as square dancing partners and later formed a musical group. He enjoyed making many different crafts and Christmas decorations which decorated the front of the house and were shared with many friends as gifts. He also enjoyed recording many movies and musical tapes to enjoy with Velma during the winter nights. Oscar was famous for his home made Italian sausages that were well favoured among his friends through the Thunder Bay area for many years. Oscar was very interested in politics and enjoyed many political debates with family and friends. He was a member of the Conservative party for over 60 years and recently was honoured with a Christmas message from the Prime Minister to recognize this long standing membership. He was predeceased by his son Donald (2002), his parents Baretta (1960) Amelia (1950), brothers Antonio and Louis and sisters Olympia Contardo, Ida Colosimo, Leah Sawicki, and Doris Thompson. He was also predeceased by his in-laws Henry and Josephine Ariano, as well as brother and sister-in-law Ernie and Gladys Ariano. According to his wishes there will be no funeral. Cremation has taken place and there will be a private family burial. If so desired, donations can be made to St. Joseph‘s Hospice in memory of his son Donald, Hospice Northwest or a charity of your choice. CARD OF THANKS The family of the late Oscar Bernardi would like to extend their sincere gratitude and appreciation to all who were with us during the loss of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. Thank you for the compassion and care that was to him over the last eighteen months. Words cannot express how deeply grateful we were for the care, support, guidance and understanding shown by Dr. Kevin Miller. Special thanks is given to the Community Care Access Centre and the home care nursing staff of St. Elizabeth‘s Health Care. DUNPHY, Edith Irene (nee Good) 1917 - 2009 Edith passed away peacefully at the Bethany Care Centre in Cochrane, Alberta, on Friday, April 10, 2009 at the age of 91 years. THOMSON 2009-04-12 It is with deep sorrow that the family of Ruth Evelyn Thomson (nee Sparrow) announces her passing at the age of 81 years, on Saturday, April 11, 2009 at Thunder Bay Regional Hospital after a brief illness. Born in a little cottage outside of Edinburgh in 1928, Ruth‘s family immigrated to Canada in 1963. She was always proud of her Scottish heritage. She kept her soft brogue and her quick wit right to the end. She worked for many years at Sears and kept many lasting friendships. She leaves behind to mourn her passing her daughters Evelyn Thomson and Lorraine Thomson (Grant Currie) of Belleville; devoted grandchildren Susan Thomson, Pauline and Jessica Thomson of Niagara Falls, Douglas MacLean of Montreal, Sharon MacLean of Toronto and Caileigh and Spencer Currie; great grandsons Jesse and Hector; twin sister Bette "Joan" Atcheson of Markham; nieces and nephews Sigrid Scavarelli and family, Brian Etland and family of New Orleans, Paul Atcheson and family of Markham and Edward, Keith, Catherine, Sean and Anne Marie Sparrow of Great Britain. Ruth was predeceased by her husband Ian in 1992 and her son Raymond in 1999. SCALLY, Peter Peacefully at the Cornwall Community Hospital-McConnell Site on Sunday, April 5, 2009 Peter Scally of Cornwall in his 84th year. He was born in Scotland on December 20, 1925. After coming to Canada in the mid fifties he worked for Air Canada in Montreal until his retirement in the mid eighties. Following retirement he spent many winters in Florida playing his favourite sport - tennis. He is the cherished brother of Bernard (Mary) of Scotland and Rose Ogilvie of Morrisburg; sister-in-law Aileen Scally of BC, many nieces and nephews in Scotland and BC. Predeceased by sisters Mary (Michael) McNeil and Rena (Terry) Hay, brother Dennis and brother-in-law Bob Ogilvie. Survived by his son Shawn “Chico’’ (Michelle) Laybolt of Souris; granddaughters Kelsey and Jasmine; brothers and sisters, Sterling (Valerie), Elva Kennedy, Wilfred (Rita), Lorraine Wooldridge, Willie (Theresa), Shirley Irving, Valerie (Kevin) MacKinnon, John and Kenneth; sister-in-law, Ernestine Laybolt and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Nellie (Deveaux) Laybolt; brothers; Leaman and Joseph; and his sister, Judy Cudmore. Resting at the Hennessey Funeral Home until 9:30 Monday morning, then transferred to St. Andrews Church, Mount Stewart, for funeral mass at 10 a.m. Visiting hours at the funeral home on Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. If so desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of P.E.I.
