NELSON E. ROGOZA By editorial Monday, 19 January 2009 - 3:33pm. Obituaries It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Nelson Eddy Rogoza, with his family by his side, on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009 at the end of his battle with cancer. Nelson was born July 9, 1940 in Vita, Man., the eldest son of the late John and Katherine Rogoza. At the age of five, Nelson’s family decided to move to Toronto, Ont. On their way, they stopped in Fort Frances, Ont. to visit relatives and decided to stay! Nelson attended Robert Moore School and Fort Frances High School. After graduating from high school, Nelson enrolled in a summer “Pre-Teacher’s Course” at the Lakehead. In September of 1959, he began his teaching career in North Branch, about 20 miles north of Stratton, where he had a class of 33 student,s including all grades from 1-10. Following another session of summer school, Nelson married his high school sweetheart, Carol Hinrichs, on Aug. 27, 1960. His teaching assignment was the Grades 1-8 Central School in Alberton, where he had the special privilege of teaching his own brother and sister and brother-in-law. Following a full year of teachers’ college, Nelson taught at Robert Moore School and worked part-time on his degree, achieving his B.A. in 1969, the same year he assumed the principalship at J.W. Walker School in Fort Frances. He later completed the principal’s course and in 1979 achieved a Masters of Education from the University of Minnesota, Duluth. While at Walker School, Nelson also had principal responsibilities for other schools such as McIrvine, Alexander Mackenzie, Alberton Central School, and the Lac La Croix elementary and secondary school. In these schools, Nelson felt privileged to work with some outstanding teachers, gifted students, and supportive parents. Nelson retired from education in 1994 after 35 challenging but enjoyable years. Besides education, Nelson was an active member of St. George’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church, teaching Sunday School from the early 1960s to the early ’80s. He served on the church executive, as president and later as the financial secretary for the past 35 years. He assisted his father, John, who was the cantor and he took over that role when his father was unable because of poor health. Nelson greatly enjoyed being a member of Walter Andrusco’s church choir and later assumed this responsibility. Serving the Lord, and being with his Ukrainian community, was dear and special to him. As a resident of the Alberton community where he lived, Nelson served as a member and chairman for 12 years with the Alberton Planning Advisory Committee when it was first initiated. When people asked him what he did in his retirement, his standard answer was that he golfed one day, fished with his family the next day, gardened and did yard work the third day, repeated the three-day cycle, and on the seventh day went to worship the Lord to thank Him for all His blessings! The cycle did not work as well in the winter time, but he did thoroughly enjoy curling with Paul, Frank, Mel, and Rod. Nelson was predeceased by his parents, John and Katherine Rogoza; father-in-law, Walter Hinrichs; and infant granddaughter, Ashlee. Nelson is survived and sadly missed by his loving wife, Carol; children, Nelson Jr. of Fort Frances, Ont., Grant (Renee) of Fort Frances, Ont., and Lindsey (Mellisa) of Atikokan, Ont.; and grandchildren, David, Aaron, Mark, Michael, Daniel, Cassandra, and Reed. Also surviving are his sister, Joan (Mike) Hughes of Fort Frances, Ont.; brother, Johnny (Daphne) Rogoza of Winnipeg, Man.; brothers-in-law, Ernie (Joan) Hinrichs of Toronto, Ont., Rod (Faith) Hinrichs of Alberton, Ont., and Jerry (Dorothy) Hinrichs of Fort Frances, Ont.; his God-daughter, Melissa Hinrichs of Fort Frances, Ont.; his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Hinrichs of Fort Frances, Ont.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, including uncles and aunts whom he loved and respected. Visitation will be held Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009 from 7-9 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances, with prayers offered at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 23, 2009 at 10 a.m. at St. George’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Fort Frances. Teresa was born in Ontario and moved to Calgary to work in the oil and gas industry. She was employed with Dome Petroleum for many years. Teresa had a deep respect for and faith in God. BUCK, John Martin December 28, 1925 - January 17, 2009 John Martin Buck of Calgary passed away on Saturday, January 17, 2009 at the age of 83 years. John was an Anglican priest, Civil Engineer, instructor, and backyard mechanic - a true Renaissance man. We delight that, as he would say, he has gone to see Jesus face-to-face. John was born in Ottawa on December 28, 1925 and raised in Verdun, Montreal. John and Laurel lived on the same street and first met in elementary school. John graduated from McGill University with a B.Eng. and later went back to McGill's Montreal Diocesan College to take a Master of Theology (STM). John and Laurel moved to the Gatineau in Quebec for his first, 6-point parish. Eight years in Chateauguay followed, where John led the parish in building St. George's church. In 1965, John and Laurel packed up their four boys and the family dog and drove to Calgary where he became the Associate Priest of the parish of Christ Church. They maintained their roots in Quebec, returning every summer to the family cottage that John built at Little Red Pine Lake. In 1967, John undertook his own centennial project and became an instructor of Math and Physics at SAIT. He taught for twenty-three years, a respected teacher who treated his adult students with compassion and understanding. At the same time, John continued as a worker-priest in a team ministry. John fell in love with western Canada when he travelled to Saskatchewan as a teenager in wartime to help bring in the crops. He shared his love of the land with his family, teaching the boys to ski, boating in the Shuswap and at Waterton, and camping in the eight-man tent all across Canada. John was a man who could fix a dryer with an old nylon stocking while exploring the finer points of New Testament theology or the workings of the internal combustion engine. He had a quick walk, a sharp mind, and a loyal and generous heart. He lives on. BELUSHAK, Michael - Passed away at his home on Saturday, January 17, 2009 in his 90th year. Mike will be sadly missed by his loving wife, soul mate and best friend Sally. November 24th would have been their 64th anniversary; they were inseparable best friends and polka dancing partners, working together till the end. He will be sadly missed by his children Donna (Richard), Kim and Michael (Ann) and his granddaughter Alicia who was his pride and joy. Mike touched the hearts and lives of countless people, more than we will ever know. For 35 years he was a mechanic in Welland and St. Catharines and an apprentice teacher (mechanics) at Conestoga College in Guelph for 14 years. Mike was known to be “Mr. Fix It”; always helping others and working around the house. He was like the energizer bunny, he kept going and going until he finally wore out. At Michael's request cremation has taken place. Rev. Timothy had a happy life. He loved Algonquin Park and the outdoors, where he was happiest. His spirit is now roaming the skies over Alqonquin and elsewhere. SANDERS - Joseph Morris Sanders died peacefully on Thursday 15 January 2009 at age 82, surrounded by family. Born Joseph Morris Srolovitz 7 October 1926 in Calgary, he was raised on a homestead farm near Scollard, Alberta, in a Jewish farming community. Morris attended Thompson and Rumsey schools. In 1941, his parents became proprietors of the Red & White Store in Rumsey, and Morris and brother Ralph continued farming until 1946 when they joined their parents' business. From 1950 to 1959, Morris was a bulk agent of the British American Oil Company in Rumsey. He married Miriam Freedman of Calgary on 5 April 1959. From 1960 to 1975, Morris and Ralph owned and operated Drumheller's Whitehouse Hotel (later Drumheller Motel and Hotel), which they expanded to include an adjacent motel and the Greyhound Bus Depot. Morris served as a City of Drumheller alderman from 1969 to 1971. In 1975, he relocated to Calgary and became a commercial real estate salesman. Morris and Ralph entered the apartment business in 1976. Morris had a congenial smile, a joyous laugh, and a passion for life. He was generous, modest, and pragmatic, and he unhesitatingly helped the poor, visited the sick, and welcomed strangers to his home. He and Miriam loved to travel and saw the world. Morris treasured his family above all else. Morris was predeceased by father Harry Srolovitz (ne Strulovici), mother Mary (nee Rosenzweig), brother Ralph, and son Simon. He is survived by: his wife Miriam; son Barry (Shanno Sen) and children Yuval and Sapna; daughter Alias (Kelly Taylor); son Harry (Kirsten Olson) and children Jonas and Anna; sisters Shirley Corenblum and Helen Dlin; and two nieces and five nephews. Burial services were held 16 January at the Erlton Jewish cemetery with Rabbi Menachem Matusof officiating. The family extends profound gratitude to the Rockyview General Hospital and to his physician Dr. Jacqueline Lewis.
