SOSNOWSKI, Jerzy (George) April 22, 1914 - January 5, 2009 It is with both sadness and gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Jerzy (George) Sosnowski on January 5, 2009 in Calgary, Alberta, of natural causes. He is survived by his wife Maria, his sons Mark, Andrew and Christopher, his daughter Monica and their spouses, his ten grandchildren, and his sister Celina Sienkiewicz. Jerzy was born on April 22, 1914, in Gdancowka near Krzywy Rog, Ukraine, the third child of Polish parents Piotr and Kazimiera Sosnowski. At the age of five, he and his family were forced to flee Ukraine for Poland due to the Russian Revolution. He grew up in Sosnowiec and completed a Master of Science degree in Geological Engineering at the Akademia Gornicza in Krakow. In 1939, at the beginning of the Second World War, the invasion of Poland forced Jerzy, with his army unit, to retreat to Hungary. From there he made a difficult journey across Europe to England. For the rest of the war, he was based in Great Britain and supported the Allies as an interpreter, engineer and paratrooper in the Polish Parachute Brigade. After the war, he did additional study in London in seismology. In 1950, he immigrated to Canada to work in the oil industry in the west. In 1953, he married Maria Morys. Over the following years, Jerzy continued his career in the oil patch in Canada and Brazil. He officially retired from BP in 1984. On August 15, 2006, Jerzy was given an honourary promotion to the rank of Major by the Polish army. VARGA, Karl - Passed away at the Welland Hospital on Sunday, January 4, 2008 in his 74th year. Loving father of Erika Varga, Andy Varga (Barbara Agnew) and Karl Varga Jr. (Wendy). Cherished grandfather of Michael Andrew Varga. Predeceased by his sister Irma and brother Arpad. WHITEMAN, Osborne “Ozzie” - January 2, 2009 A former Kingstonian, now residing in Rochester, New York, Ozzie (age 92), passed away quickly in the early morning. Predeceased by his first wife, Marjorie Whiteman, he is survived by his wife, Rose Ann Christine Whiteman; daughter, Shirley (John) Scripture; sisters, Lyla (Carmen) McEwen, of E. Pembroke, NY; Lula (Arthur) Fleiler of Whitby, Ontario, Canada; several nieces and nephews. Ozzie was well known for his fiddle playing. He played for many dances and receptions at George Salmon's Lodge, Twin Oaks Lodge, Sharbot Lake and at the Flinton Old Time Fiddlers Dances. He had his own band called the “Rhythamares” in the early days and the group was well known in the area. He and his fiddle music will be greatly missed. CLUTCHEY, James 'Jim' Charles - Passed away peacefully at the Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital after a long courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, January 4, 2009; at the age of 69. George William SMELTZER February 20, 1919 - December 28, 2008 SMELTZER George William Smeltzer 1919 ~ 2008 On Sunday morning, December 28th, 2008, George William Smeltzer passed away at the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, enveloped in love by his family. George, the son of Wallace and Inez Smeltzer, lived 89 years in the community of Upper Vaughan, a community he thoroughly enjoyed being a part of. It was here he attended the Upper Vaughan Baptist Church faithfully every Sunday, tended his farm animals and woodland. He was at home “on the hill” recounting stories and telling jokes of long ago to his many faithful friends and relatives who came to visit on a regular basis. He was widely respected as the oldest male in the community and will be greatly missed by everyone. Our father’s life revolved around his family. Our parent’s home was always open and memories of large family gatherings will be lovingly remembered. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Viola (Smith) who was the love of his life; son, Kenneth (Mary) Smeltzer of Wolfville; daughter, Beverly (Bruce) Lake of Windsor. He is survived by Stephen Chappell and Brenda Putnam, children of his deceased daughter, Marilyn Chappell, who regarded him as their mentor throughout their growing years. He was a proud “Granddad” to Dr. Craig (Monique) Lake, Aaron (Cheryl) Lake, Matthew (Erinn) Smeltzer and great grandchildren, Jeremy Putnam; Ben, Emily and Ryleigh Lake; Uncle George to Gary Smeltzer, Margaret Higgins and Nancy Maxner. He is also survived by his sister-in law, Helen Smeltzer of Kentville. Besides his parents, Wallace and Inez (Armstrong) Smeltzer; he was predeceased by his infant sister, Alice; a daughter, Marilyn Chappell; and brother, Gerald Smeltzer.
