PAUL, Brian Charles Sadly and unexpectedly on Monday, December 29, 2008, in his 57th year. Brian Charles Paul, beloved husband and best friend of Peggy Paul (nee Stepaniak). Dear father of Beckie (Josh Bilton) of Lombardy, and Sean ( Jennine Travers) of Waterloo. Brian was the dearly loved son of Charles Paul and the late Shirley Paul (nee Neave) of St. Thomas. He will be fondly and forever remembered by his siblings Shelley (Jeff) Groves, of London, Ontario, Kerry (Denise) Paul of Windsor, and Stephen (Cindy) Paul of St. Thomas. A good man, Brian lived for his family and their well being. He was a wonderful husband and best friend for Peggy, a caring and loving Dad for Beckie and Sean, loving brother, son, and brother-in-law. Loving uncle to Ryan, Jessica, Justine, and Julianne Paul. Sadly missed by his sister-in-law Chris (Bill Pressey), his brother-in-law Bob (Karen) Stepaniak, and their children; Greg (Tanya) Stepaniak, Steven Stepaniak, and Heather Stepaniak. Brian will be profoundly missed by all of his extended family and his family at 3M. Brian passed away playing his favourite sport, getting together with the guys at 3M to play a few periods. Along with his wife, Brian was the proprietor of Tay Crossing, in Perth. Brian's visitation took place on Thursday, January 1, 2009 from 2 p.m. until 4 pm and from 7 pm until 9 pm. A Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. John the Baptist Church, in Perth, on Friday, January 2, 2009 at 2:00 pm, with Father Alfred Alilio, presiding. Cremation will follow. REGIMBALD, Claire (nee Logan) It is with great sadness we announce the sudden loss of Claire at Lakeridge Health Corp. Oshawa on Monday December 29, 2008, in her 73rd year. Born in Ottawa, Ontario. Wife of the late Larry (Laurent) Regimbald. She will be greatly missed by her beloved daughters, Peggy (Don McLeod), Sheila (Tom Manley) and Teri (Mark Ferguson). Survived by sisters, Patricia Logan and Joan Rose. Predeceased by her brothers, John, Henry, Allen, Jimmy and Michael and sister, Rita; parents Seraphin (William) and Soufrida Logan (nee Seguin). THOMSON, Audrey Mabel (nee Hymers) January 9, 1920 - December 29, 2008 Peacefully in her sleep at the Whitemouth Personal Care Home in Whitemouth, Manitoba. Audrey was born on Sherbrooke Street in Ottawa, the oldest child and only daughter of Frank and Marion Hymers (nee Broad). Predeceased by her parents and brothers Roy in 1997 (Kay) and Stan in 2003 (Erma). Audrey was raised in Ottawa, attended Glebe and Commerce schools, and worked at the Met Life and Statistics Canada. In 1942 she married James Lloyd (Tommy) Thomson and this past December 1st celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. Audrey is survived by her husband Jim, her son Richard (Vivian), daughters Judy (John) Moore and Betty (Ken) Desjardine. She is survived by seven grandchildren Clem (D'Arcy), Cam (Mona), Bruce (Karen), Ian (Jen), Amanda, Shaunna (Shawn) Finnegan and Stephanie Copeland (John Burchell); and six great-grandchildren, Travis, Cody, Ethan, Lane and Liam Thomson and Hailey Copeland-Burchell. Audrey and Jim moved to Pinawa Manitoba in 2004. In 2006 she became a resident of the Whitemouth Personal Care Home. The family wish to express their deepest gratitude to the staff of the Whitemouth Personal Care Home for the excellent loving care that Mom received during her stay. WOOD, Henry Robert "Noel" December 28, 1912 - December 28, 2008 WWII Veteran Peacefully on December 28, 2008 at the age of 96 at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital, Ottawa, ON. Sadly missed by his wife of 60 years, Marion (Healey). Also his four children Sheila (Ronald) of Ennismore, ON; Christopher (Debra) of Lindsay, ON; Jill of Stittsville, ON and Gregory (Marlene) of Bethany, ON. Also grandchildren Anthony, Beth and Andrew and great-grandson Anthony. Pre-deceased by his parents Olivia and Ralph Wood and brothers John, Rupert and Shirley. Survived by his sisters Betty, aged 93 and Nora, age 104 years of England. He will be dearly remembered by many other family members and friends. Noel was born and raised in St. John's, Newfoundland and joined the Royal Artillery Newfoundland Regiment, serving with the Middle East and British North Africa Forces 1940-1945. After his discharge he farmed in Bethany, ON and was also employed by the Ontario Government. He relocated to Stittsville, ON in 1996. Family and friends are invited to attend a service in his remembrance at St. Thomas Anglican Church, 1619 Main St., Stittsville on Saturday, January 3rd at 11 a.m. Interment will be at St. Mary's Anglican Church, Lifford, ON in May 2009. GANGELL, Keith Francis. November 10, 1933 - December 22, 2008. On Monday, December 22, 2008 at Fleetwood Care Facility in Surrey, BC, Keith F. Gangell passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease, beloved husband of the late Stefania Gangell (Burych), predeceased by his late granddaughter Kayla St. Cyr; parents Frank and Vera Gangell; brother John Gangell; sisters Judy Gangell and Margaret Phillips of Australia He will be greatly missed by family and friends. BRUCE, Grant June 1926 - December 30, 2008 Grant was born in Glasgow, Scotland and immigrated as an infant to Canada with his parents and two sisters. He proudly served with the Canadian Army Overseas from 1944 - 1946. It was at one of the canteens that he met his love Georgette with whom he was married for fifty-five years. Their life together involved extensive traveling to Europe and tropical destinations. They were happy. Grant graduated from Sir George with a Bachelor of Commerce and his CA. His respected and successful career took him and his family across Canada, living in Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg and finally Calgary. Grant was known to many as the "go to person" whether for financial advice, unbiased wisdom, or just a good ear. He lived his life to the fullest, and was an inspiration for many, respected by all. Grant's affections for singing, reading, joke telling, and love of the Toronto Maple Leafs never wavered. Grant is survived by his wife Georgette, daughters Gayle Bruce and Cheryl Benson, grandchildren Erik and Taryn Benson, sister Carol Pfister, life long friends Jim and Sally Atkinson, and many, many fun and loving friends. Tears are sometimes an inappropriate response to death. When a life has been lived completely honestly, completely successfully, or just completely. KURTZ, Donna Marie (Heck) August 2, 1949 - December 30, 2008 Donna Kurtz passed away peacefully at Rosedale Hospice on December 30, 2008 at the age of 59 years. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Donna fought a courageous battle with cancer for over ten years. She was always more concerned about others and, to the end, she was cheerful and encouraging. Donna is survived by her loving husband, Clarence, son Kevin (Lindsay) Kurtz, daughter Kimberly (Andrew) LeBaron and grandsons Noah and Aeden. Donna is also survived by many brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Rosedale Hospice for their devoted and loving care of Donna. SKLAR, Tanya (nee Volovnik) April 21, 1919 - January 1, 2009 Passed away early January 1 at age 89. Tanya is survived by her husband of forty-three years, Sidney Sklar, sons Julian, Shael and Jan Gelfand, granddaughters Hilary and Hayley Gelfand, step-children Linda Horwitz, Steven and Jeff Sklar and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, relatives and friends. Tanya was predeceased by her parents Osis and Ida Volovnik and her first husband Robert Gelfand and her beloved dog Shayna. Tanya lived a rich and accomplished life; first valedictorian IL Peretz School, first class RCAF Women's Division, BComm University of Toronto. She was an award winning journalist, and one of the first women in Calgary to host live radio and television programs. Tanya was active in Calgary's Jewish community serving on the Board of Calgary Jewish Family Services for many years. She was also active with the Lions and Lioness clubs. Tanya always had a love of education taking online university courses well into her eighties. VANDERGUCHT, George August 13, 1939 - December 25, 2008 George Vandergucht of Calgary, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, December 25, 2008 at the age of 69 years. George was born on August 13, 1939 in Gravelbourg, SK and raised in Assiniboia, SK. He was an active third-degree member and past Grand Knight of council 8471 of the Knights of Columbus as well as a member of the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters. George is the beloved father of three daughters and sons-in-law, Robin and Keith Freney, Janice and D'Arcy Norman and Kary and Tim Ohlhauser all of Calgary. VEITCH, Jim 1948 - 2008 It is with great sadness that the family of Jim Veitch announce his passing on Monday, December 29, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer. Jim will be greatly missed by his wife Shirley, daughters Liane and Annie, Jim's mother Jessica, sister Jenni and her husband John, brother Neil and his wife Jane, nieces, nephews and many friends. Jim worked for Tri Ocean Engineering of Calgary as the Chief of the Piping Engineering department where he will also be sadly missed. Jim's family would like to thank the many friends who cared about him throughout his life, and took the time to call or visit him during his illness. Thanks and appreciation is extended to, The Tom Baker Cancer Center and Special Services branchof the Foothills Hospital, Foothills Country Hospice of Okotoks for providing the special care Jim needed during his final days and also for the comfort provided to Jim and his family. JONES, Clare Parke (nee Hodgson). Passed away comfortably in her sleep on December 23, 2008 at Wyndham Manor in Oakville, Ontario in her ninety-third year. The staff is thanked for all their compassion and caring for Clare during her stay. Wife of Harrison Jones. Sister of Lucille (Norman), Gwen (Ted), Frank (Grace). Children Barry (Kathie), Trevor (Hughie), Derek (Pat), Lynn (Anthony). Grandchildren Kimberly (Josh), Ben (Heidi), Jason (Jennifer), Caitlin (Paul), Adrian, Jesse (Dave), Matthew. She started the ladies' carpet bowling club and taught at Vanier College. For several years she taught piano at her home. She also had a passion for playing bridge. 913-2008 Angeline Mary Hay, widow of the late J. Maxwell Hay, of Hay Lane, Miramichi, passed away at the Miramichi Regional Hospital, on Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008, at the age of 95. Born in Chatham, on May 3rd, 1913, she was the daughter of the late James and Mary (Doucette) Petrie. She was a homemaker and an adherent of the United Church of Canada. She is survived by one daughter, Mary Creamer (Paul), of Miramichi; one grand daughter, Paula Creamer, of Miramichi; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Maxwell, in 2001; six sisters, Elizabeth, Eunice, Beatrice, Alice, Louise and Monica; five brothers, Wilfred, Henry, Joseph, John and Edmund. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Visitation was held at the funeral home on Friday. The funeral service was held from Adams Funeral Home Chapel. on Saturday, December 27th, 2008, at 2 pm, conducted by Rev. Charlene Maguire MacKnight. Music for the service was provided William Sweezey and the hymns were "Safe In The Arms Of Jesus", "God Will Take Care Of You" and the recessional hymn was "God Be With You Till We Meet Again". Jeanne O'Reilly, 85, widow of the late John (Jack) O'Reilly passed away peacefully on Monday, Dec 22nd at the Miramichi Regional Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Born in Lancing, England, August 24th, 1923. She was the daughter of the late Percy and Gwendolyn (Smith) Kennard. Jeanne was a quiet, gentle woman who served in the Women's Auxially Air Force of Britian during World War II and arrived in Canada as a warbride in 1946. She is survived by her eleven Children, Maureen (Ron) Wallace of Masstown, NS., Frank at home, Barbara (David) Morrison of Miramichi, Stephen (Barb) of Bartibogue, Diane (Wally) Doucette of Miramichi, Kevin (Mary) of Timberlea, NS, Janet (Kevin) Gibbs of Miramichi, Edward (Darlene) of Sackville, NB., Gail (Mike) Davis of Miramichi, David (Demming) of Miramichi, Shaun (Jaunita) of Miramichi, twenty-four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren and one brother, Edward (Audrey) Kennard of Lancing England. Jeanne was a home maker, who was a friend to her children, as well as a loving mother. Although she was busy raising eleven children she always had time for volunteer work, which was a very fulfilling part of her life. She was a religion teacher, a teacher aide and a member of St. Vincent de Paul as well as "Meals on Wheels". Jeanne was loved by all who known her for her quiet, gentle Manner. Joseph Robert Richard, born in Cape Augete, Cape Breton, N.S., November 13, 1914 passed away on Monday Morning Dec 22, 2008 at his residence in Loggieville, NB Joe was the son of the late Peter A. Richard and Victoria Richard. Joe was a veteran of WWII serving in England and Continental Europe with the Cape Breton Highlanders. He lived much of his life in Lancaster, NB., working for the CPR until he retired. Known by many for his athletic abilities as a skater, a boxer, and a middle distance and long distance runner. He received the Bishop Dollard Metal for service to the Diocese of Saint John in 2000 and was a 3rd degree Knight of Columbus. He was a member of St Andrew's Roman Catholic Church in Loggieville, NB. Bliss M. Brown of Avondale passed away on Friday, December 19th, 2008 at the Upper River Valley Hospital in Waterville. Bliss was born January 17th, 1913 and was the son of the late Lemuel and Bernice (Estabrooks) Brown. HORSMAN, Frank Sanford - Peacefully he went home to be with his Lord early Christmas morning, Frank Sanford Horsman, age 90 of Sarnia. Brother of Addi Searle. Predeceased by sisters Thelma, Marg, Ruby, Myrtle, Doris, Evelyn, and brother Harold. Frank will be missed by many nieces and nephews. Survived by his daughter Sharon Dawson and his grandson Joel Dawson. Survived by his “adoptive” children and his dear friends of many years Ernie and Sharon Silvester. Born in Moncton, New Brunswick on March 2, 1918. After serving in WWII, Frank worked for Moncton Hydro, then came to Sarnia where he worked for Imperial Oil. In his spare time, Frank enjoyed flying. Frank was known for his caring heart, his beliefs, and his passion for life. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. BALLARD, Gwendolyn Margaret (nee Reynolds) April 24, 1920 - December 22, 2008 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Mom, Grandma and Great-Grandma. She passed away peacefully at the Canmore General Hospital, Canmore, Alberta on December 22. One of seven children, she was born and raised in Moose Jaw, SK. Gwen worked for the Royal Bank in both Moose Jaw and Regina and with the British Embassy in Washington, D.C. from 1943 to 1945. Gwen was married to John Douglas Ballard in August 1945; they lived in Regina until 1966 when they were transferred by Marathon Oil Company to Casper, Wyoming and then to Anchorage, Alaska in 1975. Gwen has lived in Calgary since the death of her husband on September 1, 1975. She volunteered for many years with the Foothills Hospital Auxiliary, Meals on Wheels and Nu-Grads, and she loved playing bridge three times a week. She will be deeply missed by her three children, Barbara (Brian) Bashnick of Canmore, Barry (Margaret Smith) of Calgary, Brian (Twila) of Riverton, WY, five grandchildren, Jeff (Susan Clow) Bashnick of Balgonie, SK, Andrea (Cory) Brandt of Regina, Ian (Julie Orpen) Bashnick of Airdrie, AB, Ashley Ballard of Denver, CO and Whitney Ballard of Riverton, WY and six great-grandchildren, Jayden Brandt, Alora Bashnick, Emma Clow and Odessa, Adriana and Samuel Bashnick. Mom would proudly tell everyone that Jayden and twins Adriana and Samuel were all born on her birthday, April 24. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. OBITUARY CHARLES "CHUCK" HARRIS Charles R. "Chuck" Harris died at his home in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday, December 27, 2008. Born on February 6, 1953, in Lynchburg, Virginia to Lucy Elliott Harris and the late William Harris. Chuck received a bachelor of science from the University of Virginia and a Master of Science from the Institute of Textile Technology. This was followed by a career of almost thirty years as a management consultant with Kurt Salmon Associates and The Context Group. As a senior partner with Kurt Salmon Associates, he was responsible for expanding KSA's consulting practice for the textile industry, was the Director of Canadian operations for five years, and was also instrumental in the development of the company's international competitive benchmarking and Quick Response services. While with the Context Group, his specialties were in the areas of operations improvement, business process re-engineering and international sourcing. He also sat on the Board of Directors of the Apparel Manufacturers Institute of Quebec and was a Certified Management Consultant. He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club, and was about to begin to serve as the local chapter's next president. His job and marriage to a travel agent allowed him to pursue his love of travel. Chuck was closing in on his goal to become a member of the Century Club, with more than ninety countries visited. He also was a voracious reader and an enthusiastic collector of music. He left us too soon, but he leaves behind a host of people who will miss his ready wit, intelligence, generous heart and smile. He is survived by his wife, Judy Faust; mother, Lucy Harris of Louisa; sister, Cynthia Harris and her husband, Perry Beazell of Charlottesville; brother, Bruce Harris and his wife, Lockie of Richmond; brother, Gregory Harris, wife, Ann of Singapore; nephews, Ian, Michael and William Harris; nieces, Sarah and Elizabeth Harris; aunt, Michael Whalen of Easton, Maryland; and scores of friends and colleagues. Viewing will take place at the Hill & Wood Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, January 2, 2009. SPENSLEY, Laura 1922 - 2008 Laura Spensley, of Mackenzie Towne Retirement Centre, passed away at the Calgary Rockyview Hospital on December 23, just a few hours after playing the piano in the chapel. Her loving husband, Jack, was at her side, as he has been throughout their marriage. Laura was born in Calgary, to parents Heber and Bertie Smith, of Springbank. She grew up on the family farm, and finished high school in Calgary, before meeting Jack. Following Jack's time in the Air Force, they built a home in the Killarney area of Calgary where they raised their family, and lived until the late 1980's. Laura was a talented pianist, teaching piano lessons for many years, and happily playing at many family, church and social gatherings, and in recent years at the Mackenzie Towne Retirement Centre. She was also very involved with many youth and volunteer groups, most notably the CGIT at St. Matthews United Church where her family were long-time members, and the Alberta Camping Association where she served as Secretary. Laura and Jack loved camping, hiking and exploring the outdoors. They travelled all over the world, but especially loved camping in their motorhome in which they visited much of Canada and the US. Laura became a very accomplished (and very modest) painter of watercolors, using the natural environment as her inspiration. Laura is survived by her husband Jack to whom she was married for sixty-six years. Their marriage is an inspiration to all who know them for their love and caring. Also surviving are her three children, Doug (Mary), Ellen (Doug Darling), and Harold (Nancy); seven grandchildren, Allan (Sarah) and Janet Spensley, Amie Furneaux, Kenneth (Kaleen) and Russell Darling, Adam and Corbin Spensley; six great-grandchildren, Leah and Rhiannon Spensley, Sabina Rodrigues, Kyle, Kennady, and Kiana Darling; and Laura's brother, Gordon (Fay) Smith, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. Laura's wishes were that her body be donated to the University of Calgary School of Medicine. A private Memorial Service attended by Laura's family and friends was held on December 30.
