ANTTILA, Klaus 2008-12-16 Mr. Klaus Anttila age 87 years, formerly of Lillian Street, passed away peacefully in Pioneer Ridge on Sunday December 14th, 2008. Born in Kemi, Finland in 1921, Klaus immigrated to Canada in 1956 and worked for Abitibi until his retirement in the mid 1980‘s. He will be lovingly remembered by his children Ulla (Donald Dumond) Anttila, Seppo (Angela) Anttila and Eila (Richard) Charbonneau, grandchildren Denis (Andrea), Michael, Rejeanne (Dale), Derek, Mark, and Daniel, great grandchildren Michael and Hunter and his sister Helvi Trygg in Finland. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. Klaus was predeceased by his wife Hilkka in June of 2005. Private family services will be held at a later date. GIROUARD, Marie-Claire S.N.J.M. À Longueuil, le 14 décembre 2008, à l'âge de 95 ans, est décédée Soeur Marie-Claire Girouard, en religion Sylvia Marie. Fille de Josaphat Girouard et Sylvia Patenaude, elle consacra toute sa vie à la musique comme professeure aux couvents d'Hochelaga, Valleyfield et Outremont. Avant sa retraite en 1996 elle fût, pendant 13 ans, organiste titulaire de la Basilique-Cathédrale de Valleyfield. Elle laisse dans le deuil, outre les membres de sa famille religieuse, ses frères Albini (Liliane Lamy), Jean (Andrée Bérard) et André (Araceli Jardeleza). L'ont prédécédée dans la mort sa soeur Annette (Cyrias Blouin), ses frères Laurent (Louise Pontbriand), Clément (Thérèse Beausoleil) et Sylvio (Patricia Krohe). HUBBARD, Francis (Frank) November 10, 1927 - December 11, 2008 Francis Hubbard of Didsbury, AB passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2008 at the age of 81 years. Francis was born on November 10, 1927 in Surry, England. He served with the Royal Navy for twenty-two years. In 1969 Francis and Agnes immigrated to Canada, settling in Calgary. Francis worked twenty-five years for Sears Canada as a Service Technician retiring in 1994. In 1979 their family moved to Airdrie and in 1998 Francis and Agnes retired in Didsbury. Francis is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, Rhod and Cindy, and Ken and Wendy; grandson Justin; and sister Grace Appleyard. Francis was predeceased by his wife Agnes in 2004; sister Vera in 1996; and parents May and Francis. SNYDERS-BLOK, Martina Hendrika December 24, 1937 - December 12, 2008 Martha Snyders-Blok (Oma as she was known to many) passed away peacefully in Calgary on December 12, 2008 at the age of 70 years after a courageous battle with cancer. Many would know of her through the cards that she handmade and sold to raise funds for the Cancer Society. Oma, you will be missed, please watch over us. WENTJARV, Jan Peter Jan Peter Wentjarv of Calgary passed away suddenly while on vacation in Varadero, Cuba on December 9, 2008 at the age of 56. Jan was born in Vaasa, Finland on November 6, 1952, the only child of Sirpa and Sven-Ake Wentjarv. Jan served in the Finnish navy during his military service. He later came to Canada in the spring of 1974 to join his mother (Sirpa Gilbert) who had moved here several years earlier and re-married. Jan worked for the City of Calgary Electric System (Enmax) for thirty years and retired this past April, 2008. Jan lived life to the fullest. His love of sports and cheerful personality brought much interest into life around him. His straightforward, no nonsense, practical approach to life along with his fun sense of humour, and ready laugh, were greatly appreciated and valued by his family and his wide circle of friends. Jan is survived by his son Jamie Christopher, his father Sven-Ake and stepmother Elma, his stepsister Maarit (and her family), his stepbrother Miika (and his family), as well as several other aunts, uncles, and cousins who reside in Vancouver, Finland and Sweden. Jan's son Jamie is respecting the wishes of his father to hold no Funeral Service for him. Jan would prefer that those who remember him raise a glass in memory instead. JESSIMAN, Margaret 2008-12-16 The family of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend Margaret Jessiman announce her passing on Saturday, December 13, 2008. She was born on April 24, 1913 in Winnipeg to parents Theresa and John Meder. She met the love of her life James (Jim) Hugh Jessiman and after the birth of their first daughter Valerie they moved to Fort William. Daughter Diane and son Bill were born there. She loved to entertain, bake, garden, read and her beautiful crafts adorn many homes. Jim’s political career began early and after spending time as a city alderman he was elected to provincial parliament and Margaret stood proudly by his side. She made lasting friendships wherever she went. Her neighbours in Vickers Heights, Cherrydale Place, Jasper Apt. and Versa Care were important to her. The passing of daughter Diane Dingwall (Gary) in 1969 was something that grieved her the rest of her life. She was particularly fond of her Jessiman in-laws. Her love of the Lord, her family and friends filled her life with many precious moments. MORELL, George Wendell - George W. Morell Capt. (Retired), passed away peacefully with family at his bedside on November 25, 2008 at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, at the age of 83 years. He was predeceased by his mother Grace (Jones) Morell, his father Frederick Clifford Morell, his brothers Fred and Horace and his son George of Winnipeg. He is survived by his wife Margaret Ethel (Wilson), his son Douglas, his grandchildren Sarah Dundass (Kevin) and Jason (Laura), his great grandsons Miles and Riley Morell and his sister Lois Martin of Miramichi, N.B. George was born in Newcastle New Brunswick in 1925. He joined the RCAF in 1943, commenced Flying Training in January of 1944 at Pendleton and Hagersville ON and earned his Wings in November of that same year. George was honourably released from active service in January of 1946 and worked for New Brunswick Hydro before re- joining RCAF Regular Service in May of 1954. Through postings at Trenton, Penhold (#4 FTS), Gimli , Saskatoon and Cold Lake he earned an A1 Instructors rating. In January of 1958 he was assigned to 433 (AW) F Squadron in North Bay ON and in August of 1961 transferred to No. 1 Air Division Headquarters, Metz France. He was again stationed at North Bay (131 KU) in August of 1965 and retired from service in August 1970. After leaving the Air Force, he worked for the North Bay Police Department until his retirement in February 1985. In 2001, George and Ethel moved to Winnipeg. At George's request, there was no visitation and no service. Cremation has taken place and he will be buried in New Brunswick at a later date. 11357519

MacKINNON, Thelma Daye - Peacefully at home after a short and dignified battle with cancer on Sunday, December 14, 2008. She was born October 18, 1942 at Jordon Station and was the wife and best friend of Matthew Angus MacKinnon. Daughter of the late Roy and Thora Smith. Sister of George (Marie) Smith, Murray (Kathy) Smith, Thora (Floyd) MacDonald and Mary (Jim) Fullerton. Sister in law of John Kump (predeceased by sister Betty Kump). She was the loving aunt and great aunt to many nieces and nephews. Among those she loved, her smile has faded but the glow and warmth that was Thelma remains with all who knew her. Special thanks to St. Elizabeth Nurses and Dr. Denise Marshall for their comfort and care as well as the staff at Henderson Hospital in Hamilton and the Emergency Room Staff at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital, Grimsby where she was always in good hands. Thelma was the operator of Home and Hearth Bed and Breakfast for 15 years. Cremation has taken place. AVIS DE DÉCÈS LUCIENNE DUGAS est décédée le 15 décembre 2008, à Ottawa. Elle avait 89 ans. Née le 8 mai à Rivière-du-Loup, au Québec, Lucienne a enseigné plusieurs années à la petite école du rang où étaient réunis en une salle les enfants de la 1ère à la 7e année. Elle est ensuite allée à Québec poursuivre la formation qui lui tenait à coeur, comme infirmière, à l'hôpital St-Sacrement. Diplômée de Laval, elle s'est dirigée à Montréal pour faire carrière à l'hôpital de Verdun. Un voyage fortuit en Abitibi, où elle avait passé l'été de 1950, dans un programme de vaccination des autochtones, lui a fait rencontrer feu Louis Dugas, avec qui elle a vécu 56 ans. Mariée en 1951, elle a mis de côté son métier pour donner préséance à sa famille. Une fois ses 4 enfants devenus adolescents, elle a repris le métier à la pouponnière de l'hôpital Montfort. Au fil des ans, son doigté délicat et précis, tant pour les travaux à l'aiguille que pour les êtres humains, ses talents culinaires, sa douceur, sa gentillesse, ont conquis bien des coeurs. Ses enfants: Louise (Ian), Danielle (Ira), Louis, et Luc (Carolyn); ses petits-enfants: Simon, Claudine, Bruno, Jacqueline et Miriam; ses soeurs: Antoinette, Thérèse, Simone, et son frère Léo sont unis dans leur amour pour Lucienne. La famille accueille parents et amis mardi le 16 décembre 2008, de 19h à 21h, à la chapelle du Centre de Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, au 315 McLeod, à Ottawa. La famille sera aussi présente à compter de 12h30 le mercredi 17 décembre, à l'église Ste-Geneviève, au 825 ave Canterbury, pour recevoir les condoléances. La célébration eucharistique aura lieu à 13h et l'inhumation suivra immédiatement au cimetière de l'Espoir, 4660 rue Bank, après quoi tous sont conviés à un goûter dans le bâtiment administratif du cimetière. Eventually, she saved enough to pursue her dream, and trained at l'Hopital St-Sacrement, in Quebec city to become a nurse. A graduate of Laval University, she went to Montreal and became a nurse manager at l'Hopital de Verdun. A fortuitous commitment to a native immunization program in Abitibi allowed her to meet the late Louis Dugas, whom she married in 1951, and loved for 56 years. Career ceded priority to family and children, but eventually Lucienne returned to nursing at l'Hopital Montfort, where her skills were much appreciated in the nursery. Over the years, Lucienne's warmth and kindness, her gentle ways, her culinary talents and her wonderful dexterity at needlework won hearts. Her children Louise (Ian), and Danielle (Ira), Louis, and Luc (Carolyn), her grandchildren Simon, Claudine, Bruno, Jacqueline, Miriam, her remaining siblings Antoinette, Therese, Simone, and Leo will cherish her memory. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod St, Ottawa, Tuesday, December 16th, from 7 to 9 pm and at Ste-Genevieve Church, 825 Canterbury Ave. from 12:30 pm until time of Funeral Mass at 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 17th. FENTON, Isobel Ethel November 6, 1916 - December 11, 2008 Isobel Ethel Elizabeth Fenton (nee Allan) of Bottrel, AB, passed away at the Didsbury Long-term Care Facility on December 11, 2008 at the age of 92 years. She was predeceased by her loving husband Elmer in 1996 after sixty-two years of marriage, her father in 1936, her mother in 1953, her brother Alvy in 1977 and seventeen brothers and sisters-in-law. Isobel was the daughter of Alberta and Malcolm Allan, pioneers of the Bottrel District. Isobel attended Old Westbrook School and took high school in Cochrane. In 1934 she married Elmer Fenton and they settled near her parents homestead in the Bottrel area. Isobel was a woman to whom family meant everything. She had boundless energy and worked beside Elmer to raise their family and run the farm. Her cooking and baking skills were only surpassed by the enjoyment they brought to those lucky enough to sit down at her table. Isobel was a homemaker in the truest sense. The family expresses its sincere appreciation to the staff of Cochrane Big Hill Lodge and the Didsbury Long-term Care Unit 4, for the excellent care given to our mother in the past three years. George William Arnott Posted 5 hours ago The family of George William Arnott sadly announce his passing on Monday, December 15, 2008 at his beloved cottage at Bruce Beach, in his 83rd year. George was born in Windsor, Ontario and was the son of the late Ira and Charlotte Arnott. He is predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Kathleen Arnott (Game) and his sister, Margaret MacLean. Loving father and father-in-law of Elizabeth and Wayne “Boris” Harloff of Guelph, Catherine Arnott and Brian Jones of Ottawa, Tom and Heather Arnott of Hanover and Carol Arnott of Stratford. Dearly loved Papa of Laura Turner (Jack), Emily Harloff and Quinn Dyer. Sadly missed by his sister Joan Ryan and nephew John Ryan of Windsor and Birger and Hilda Ekblad of Kincardine, and many other loved nieces and nephews. George lived a long and wonderful life. He was one of the first graduates (BA 1951) of the Physical Education program at the University of Western Ontario. After an outstanding university football and basketball career with the Western Mustangs, he went on to play a year of professional football with the Toronto Argonauts. George happily settled into a 33-year career teaching and coaching at Windsor schools, mostly at Kennedy Collegiate Institute. He also found time to coach AKO junior football. He inspired many young athletes in football, track and field and basketball during these years. In 1983, George was inducted into the University of Western Ontario Sports Hall of Fame. He and Kathleen retired in 1985 and spent many happy years with family and friends at their cottage on Lake Huron. Donations to London Health Sciences Foundation would be greatly appreciated by the family. Arrangements by Mighton Funeral Home, Hanover. Cremation has taken place. John Wayne Johnson, of Walkerton, passed away at Guelph General Hospital on Friday, December 5, 2008 in his 60th year. Born in Rodney, Ontario on April 7, 1949 to the late John Johnson and Alice Alderton. Survived by his son Ernie Johnson of Barrie and stepdaughter Lily Anne Johnson of Newfoundland. GREEN, Peter Norton - It is with great sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of PETER NORTON GREEN at the age of 69. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 25 years, Elisabeth Green. Peter was a kind and caring step-dad, father-in-law, grandfather and “great-pa”. Peter worked for Ontario Power Generation for 38 years as a stationary engineer and as a shift supervisor in the control room. Peter had a lifelong interest in ships and trains. He was also a great animal lover. Peter was a resident of Marshall Gowland Manor where he made many friends. He served on council there and even enjoyed calling bingo. Cremation has taken place. There will be a Celebration of Life Service at Marshall Gowland Manor to be announced in January. BARNES, John Douglas With sorrow the family of John Douglas "Jack" Barnes announce his passing December 8, 2008 in Drumheller, at the age of 85. He is loved and missed by his wife Florence, his children Glen (Margaret), Catherine (Ralph), Marylyn (Harvey), and Keith (Sheila), and his stepchildren Candy (Ernie), Cindy (Gary), Tracy, Doug (Katherine), and Fred (Lynn), eleven grandchildren, one great-grandson, fourteen step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren. Jack is also survived by: sister Cynthia; Margaret, the mother of his children; sister-in-law Yvonne. Roger Bélanger 1935 - 2008 Le 9 décembre 2008 à l'âge de 73 ans, accompagné des siens, Roger Bélanger est décédé des suites d'une longue maladie à sa résidence de Grand-Désert en Nouvelle-Écosse. Notre tristesse est immense mais sa libération des affres de la douleur et de l'inconfort est infinie. Né à Nouvelle au Québec de l'union d'Arthur Bélanger et de Lucie St-Onge, Roger laisse dans le deuil ses frères et soeurs: Jeannine (Jean-Pierre Gauthier), Mariette (Jean-Guy Pelletier), Raymonde (feu Omer Rompré), Jules, Marius (Estelle Kenny), Arthur (Pauline Babin), Angèle, Lucette, Raymond, Régis (Évelyne Cassivi), feu Yvon (Nicole Harisson), Reine (Henri Bernier), Paulette, Gilles (Johanne Lefevbre), Nicole (Jacques Savoie), Jacques (Josée Leblanc), Claude (Rose-Marie Sivret), ses neveux et nièces et leurs enfants ainsi que de nombreux et fidèles ami(e)s. Après avoir travaillé dans l'Aviation Canadienne pendant 11 ans (au Canada, à Marville en France, en Sardaigne et en Allemagne) au sein de l'équipe de reconnaissance photographique, Roger s'est joint en 1966, à l'unité photographique de l'Institut d'Océanographie de Bedford en Nouvelle-Écosse. Au fil des ans, il a fourni des enregistrements photographiques, des archives et une documentation technique dans le cadre de nombreux projets de recherche sur les océans. Parmi ses premières expéditions océanographiques, on compte un voyage dans la Baie d'Hudson à la dorsale médio-atlantique et un projet multidisciplinaire dans les Caraïbes. À la suite de l'important déversement d'hydrocarbure par le pétrolier «Arrow» dans la baie de Chédabouctou en 1970, Roger a participé au projet de documentation photographique des répercussions immédiates du déversement ainsi qu'aux études de suivi qui ont continué pendant deux décennies. En 1979, il a participé à un premier relevé important de l'océan Arctique dans le cadre de l'expérience LOREX à partir d'un camp d'observation des glaces où il a aidé à mettre au point un système permettant de descendre et de remonter des caméras sous-marines à travers la glace. Roger a apporté diverses contributions innovatrices à la photographie océanique et à l'imagerie télévisée en ayant recours à la plongée sous-marine. Il a aidé à mettre au point la technologie d'imagerie photographique et électronique à bord de sous-marins et de submersibles télécommandés. Il a aussi participé à l'invention d'un système photographique qui permet de mesurer à distance le mouvement des sédiments dans les zones interdinales de la Baie de Fundy. Il a également créé un système photographique utilisé par les hélicoptères de la Garde Côtière. Roger a apporté son savoir-faire dans des domaines autres que scientifiques et techniques. C'est un artiste très sensible à l'esthétique: on retrouve ses photographies un peu partout dans l'Institut d'océanographie de Bedford. À sa retraite, Roger a donné des milliers d'heures de bénévolat pour ses concitoyens en s'impliquant dans son village. Entre autre, à titre de co-directeur du projet «Sentiers transcanadiens» il a participé à la réalisation du sentier de 14 km «Blueberry Run» et du point de service de la «Petain Station Yard». Grâce à sa passion pour la photographie, il a capté les divers événements de «l'Acadie de Chezzetcook». La grande beauté de la Baie de Chezettcook, de Seafort et des environs a été une source merveilleuse d'inspiration pour lui. Son site Internet «Chezzetcookimages.ca» témoigne bien de cet oeuvre poétique. Trois drapeaux acadiens sont arborés à Chezzetcook chaque année. C'est là une des nombreuses idées de Roger et ses ami(e)s s'engagent à poursuivre ce rituel en souvenir de lui et de ses racines acadiennes.
