FRASER, Helen Marie (nee Miller) - passed away Friday, December 12, 2008 in Sarnia following a brief illness. Helen was born in Sarnia, March 10, 1917 to Grace (Alexander) and Stanley Miller. She lost her mother Grace during the worldwide flu epidemic of 1917-18. Stanley Miller married Mary May and together they provided young Helen with sisters Dorothy (McCracken), Virginia (Armstrong) and brother John. Helen married Clarence Fraser in 1942 before he left to join the Royal Canadian Air Force in Britain. On his return in 1945 Helen and “Fraser“ raised four children: Thomas David, Jane Elizabeth, Julie Carolyn and Dean Scott. Dearly loved Tom passed away at the age of ten after a courageous fight with cancer. In later years, with the kids grown, Helen and Clare enjoyed many trips together both domestically and abroad. Helen was predeceased by Clare in March of 1982. Helen was a life long and active member of Central Baptist Church-Church Secretary, Women's Association, Explorers, Mission Circle, Canadian Girls in Training, Deacon and the “Central Quilters“. Her children and nine grandchildren Tim, Adam, Erin, Ian, Ryland, Graham, Claire, Ellie and Tom will especially miss her at family dinners, on the beach and at Christmas. A visitation is planned for STEWART FUNERAL HOME, George Street, Sarnia on Monday December 15 from 3 to 5 p.m. A Private Family Service will be held at Stewart Funeral Home Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. with her son, Dean Fraser officiating, assisted by Craig Rumble. BATESON, William “Bill“ Walter - Passed away at his home in Sherbrooke Heights on Friday, December 12, 2008 in his 88th year. Predeceased by his wife Agnes (nee Bowler) (2005); his first wife Margaret and their children Catherine, Bob, Ken and June as the result of a tragic house fire in 1960, and his sister Margaret (2001) and her husband Alex McKenzie. Bill will be missed by his several nieces and nephews and his friend Ferne McAdam. Bill was a dairy farmer in the Campbellford area later enjoyed sulky racing at Kawartha Downs. Bill lived at Sherbrooke Heights for the past 8 years and enjoyed the residents and staff. OBITUARY DOCTOR SAMUEL SOLOMON 1925-2008 Doctor Samuel Solomon, a leading Canadian medical researcher and administrator at McGill University, died Saturday, December 13 in Montreal. He was eighty-three and died at home of complications following a stroke, surrounded by his wife and children. Samuel Solomon was born in Brest-Litovsk, Poland and immigrated to Canada in 1935 with his mother and three sisters, his father having preceded them to find a place for the family. He earned his undergraduate and doctoral degrees from McGill University before conducting research at Columbia University where he began his academic career as an assistant professor in 1955. Dr. Solomon returned to McGill in 1960 and was named associate professor and then professor in the Departments of Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology and Biochemistry in 1970. He was named Professor Emeritus in 1995. At the time, Dr. David Goltzman, Professor of Medicine and Physiology at McGill said, "Sam Solomon's knowledge of steroid biochemistry combined with his research on the fundamental molecular signaling in early development and his passion as a researcher and teacher led to major innovations in the then new field of molecular endocrinology and development." His work in endocrinology and biochemistry won him numerous international awards, including membership in the Royal Society of Canada, which awarded him the McLaughlin Medal. He became an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1997. As the abuse of steroids in sport became an international issue, Dr. Solomon shared his expertise in the field as a member of the Dublin Commission in 1989. He and his wife Dusty spent much of their spare time and retirement years at their home in the Eastern Townships; he became a passionate gardener and came to love both the place and the people. Samuel Solomon is survived by his wife of thirty-four years, the retired journalist Dusty Vineberg Solomon. He is also survived by his three sons, Dr. David Solomon (Lucy Solimar) of New York City; Dr. Peter Solomon (Anne Gillespie) of Hull, Quebec; and Jonathan Solomon (Melissa Johnson) of Ottawa - as well as by his five grandchildren, Rachel and Juliet; Jack and Michael; and Felix. He is also survived by two sisters, Lila Gottheil of Montreal and his twin sister Genia Albrecht of Ithaca, NY, a sister-in-law, Trina Vineberg Berenson of Montreal, as well as by nephews, nieces and friends. GAROFALO, Nicolina 2008-12-15 Mrs. Nicolina Garofalo, age 68 years of Thunder Bay, passed away peacefully following a lengthy illness, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, on Friday December 12th, 2008. Nicolina or "Nicky" as she was known to many, was an extraordinary woman and a bright light to all that knew her, especially so in her younger years, as she would have liked to be remembered. Her vibrancy and joy made an impact on so many lives, particularly on those of her husband Mike & three daughters Alfie, RoseMarie and Bianca. Nicolina was born in 1940 in Brognaturo, Italy in the province of Catanzaro, to Franceso & Rosa Bava. Nicky immigrated to Canada, along with her father in 1955. In her first few years in Thunder Bay she was employed at St. Joseph’s Hospital. She always recalled that time in her life fondly. She was embraced by all that knew her including the sisterhood of nuns that helped teach her English. It was also during this time that she was spotted walking to work by the love of her life and future husband, Michael Garofalo. Mike and Nicky were married on April 19th, 1958 at St. Anthony’s Church. Their love and passion remained strong throughout their marriage and they celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary this past April surrounded by their children and grand-children. Mike & Nicky were blessed with three loving daughters, Alfie, RoseMarie and Bianca and four beautiful grand-children, Sierra, Luke, Jack & Charlie. Nicky’s greatest pride in life was being a mother and homemaker to her family which she excelled in. Before her illness, Nicky was always full of energy, a gracious hostess and a spit-fire conversationalist. Her perky and quick-witted personality was enjoyed by all that knew her but especially had an impact on her three daughters that aspired to be like her when they grew up. Nicky had a great love of gardening and maintained her yard meticulously until falling ill; after which "very" precise instructions were passed to her husband Mike. Nicky also greatly enjoyed music and movies and had an immense love for animals. Nicky will be lovingly remembered always by her husband Mike, daughters Alfie (Domenic Galati), RoseMarie (Gino) Mancusa, Bianca (Britten) Barten, four grand-children, Sierra, Luke, Jack and Charlie. Brother Gregory (Domenica) Bava, sister Consolata (in Italy) and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Nicky was predeceased by her father Franceso, mother Rosa, brother Raffaele, sister Francesa (in infancy), nephew Bruno, sister-in-law Pierina, brother-in-law Carmine, brother-in-law Tony, mother-in-law Erfida and father-in-law Santo. She is survived by three daughters, Gail Baverstock (Stan) of Black River Bridge, Joy Fawcett (Bart) of Moncton, Barbara Flanagan (Ted) of Erin, Ont.; two sons, Blair Williston (Susie) of Oakville, Ont; and Bliss Williston (Kathy) of Mississauga, Ont.; two sisters, Shirley MacDonald of Moncton and Marion Baxter (Charles) of Halifax, N.S.; one brother, Blair MacDonald of Moncton, Eighteen grandchildren,; twenty-two great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, Hubert Williston and her second husband, Dick Keohan; one brother, Bliss MacDonald; two sisters, Connie Petrie and Gwen Rougeau. Visitation was held at the funeral home on Thursday. The funeral service was held from St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church on Friday, December 5, 2008, conducted by Rev. Richard Steeves. Music for the service was provided by Mrs. Dawn Bell and the hymns were "Abide With Me", "In the Garden", "Amazing Grace" and "the Old Rugged Cross". The pallbearers were Kenny Williston, Bart Fawcett, Kenny Fawcett, Wayne Noble, Harry Williston, Ian Williston. Interment was in the church cemetery. J. Frederick (Fred) Matthews 1924 - 2008 John Frederick (Fred) Matthews, husband of Ramona (Mona) Matthews, of Russell Street, Miramichi, passed away peacefully at the Miramichi Regional Hospital, on Sunday evening, December 7, 2008, surrounded by his loving family, at the age of 84. Born in Lincoln, Maine, USA, he was the son of the late Wilfred and Lilla (Gordon) Matthews. He was an auto mechanic by trade and a former employee of McCarthy Sales Ltd., in Chatham. He was a member of St. Andrews United Church, Miramichi; a Veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas with the Canadian Army; a long serving and dedicated member of Branch # 3, Royal Canadian Legion, Miramichi, where he held many offices including District Commissioner, President, Past President and Service Officer. He is survived by his wife, the former Mona Murphy; eight daughters, Wendy Loggie (Stephen), Bonnie Lenton (Ted), Karen McCarthy (Mario), Tammy Morris (Ted), all of Miramichi, Bev Reynolds (Lorne), of Napan, Nancy Jardine (Stephen), of Fredericton, Arlene Matthews, of Moncton, Kim Gill (Thomas), of Barnaby; two sons, Daryl Matthews, of Miramichi and Jeff Matthews (Cindy), of Quispamsis; two sisters, Helen LeBlanc (Bernie), of Moncton and Linda Clarke (Bill), of Ottawa, Ont.; one brother, Gerald Matthews, of Fredericton; twenty-one grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren. He was predeceased by three sisters, Marjorie Clarke, Dorothy Horsman and Marion Johnson; four brothers, Lee, Ralph, Glen and Layton Matthews; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation was held at the funeral home on Tuesday and Wednesday. Members of Branch # 3, Royal Canadian Legion held a Veterans' Service at the funeral home on Wednesday evening. The funeral service was held from St. Andrews United Church, on Thursday, December 11, 2008, at 11 am, conducted by Rev. Charlene Maguire MacKnight. The music for the service was provided by Jacqueline Allain and Bob McCullum and the hymns were "Peace In The Valley", "Amazing Grace", "Here I Am Lord" and ""How Great Thou Art". The scriptures were read by Krista Williams and the eulogy was presented by Chris McCarthy and Daryl Matthews. A special poem was offered by Arlene Matthews. The honorary pallbearers were Ian Bowie, John Dick, Glen Hazlett, Ron Horsman, Bernie LeBlanc, Art Adams, Carl Dickson, Marg Dealy, Ray MacDonald, Clarence (Junior) MacDonald. The active pallbearers were Tony Loggie, Michael Martin, Jason McCarthy, Tyler Matthews, Jamie Reynolds, Matthew Jardine. Interment was in Pine Grove Cemetery, Miramichi.
