HAMILTON, John Beatty “Hammy“ - Suddenly at home on Sunday, November 16, 2008 at the age of 58 years. Loving father of Eric, Jody, Lisa, Kim and Tracey. Predeceased by his parents William and Agnes Hamilton. John received the community improvement award in 1993 and was a longtime employee and groundskeeper at the Kanata Lakes Golf Course. He will be greatly missed by many family and friends. At John‘s request there will be no funeral. DUFAUX, Georges, cinéaste 1927 - 2008 Le 8 novembre 2008, à l'hôpital de St-Maurice en Suisse, est décédé paisiblement Georges Dufaux. Il laisse dans le deuil son épouse Antonia McGrath, ses enfants François (David Morin), Sylvaine et Jean-Michel et les enfants d'Antonia, David Guy, Adam McGrath et Stephen Guy-McGrath. Il laisse aussi sa soeur Yvette (Franz Elsæsser), et ses frères Gérard (Nicole Gaillard ), Guy (Marie La Haye) ainsi que Jeanne-Mance Hébert et de nombreux neveux, nièces, cousins et cousines au Québec, en France et en Suisse. Artisan des premières heures du cinéma direct au Québec, il a toujours su partager avec le public et ses pairs son regard ouvert sur le monde. Il quitte de nombreux collègues côtoyés au fil des décennies dans le milieu du cinéma, autant à l'Office national du film, dont il fut directeur de la programmation française, qu'ailleurs dans l'industrie. Un don en son nom peut être fait à la Fondation de la Cinémathèque québécoise, au 335, boulevard de Maisonneuve Est, Montréal, Québec, H2X 1K1 La crémation a eu lieu à Sion, en Suisse. HUGHES, Edward John (Ted) - August 19, 1932 - November 17, 2008 R.C.N. Veteran RETIRED FIREFIGHTER (K.F.D. 30 Years) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Edward John ('Ted') Hughes on November 17, 2008 at the age of 76. After a lengthy illness, he died peacefully at home with his family. He will be forever missed by Laurena ('Laurie') Hughes, his loving wife and partner for 53 years. Ted was an adoring, devoted father to his daughter Deneen Amarante (Rafael) and a wonderful 'poppa' to Roman, Sophia, Francesca, Darvin and Edwin Amarante. He will be deeply missed by his sisters, Patricia Peters and Phyllis Pelow and by many nieces and nephews and their families who have helped us out over the years. Thank you to all of the caregivers, doctors and nurses who have cared for Ted. LeCOMTE, Michael Edward Joseph - Passed away peacefully at home on November 19, 2008 in his 64th year. Beloved son of the late Albert LeComte, and Claire nee Kennedy. Much loved older brother to Margaret Christian (Rob), Jeannine Baker (Bob), Julie Gollogly, and Christine LeComte. Predeceased by his brother-in-law Kirk Gollogly. Lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews Kelly, Michelle (Chris), Marnie (Sue), Jed, Michael (Melissa), Devon (Crystal) and Cole, as well as his grand nieces and nephews Olivia, Kate, Liam, Conor and C.J. Michael was an avid fan of the Montreal Canadiens and was present for Jean Beleveau night at the Forum along with his dad. Michael spent thirty-five years emulating his favourite players while participating in Special Olympics Floor Hockey. He was a passionate reader of mystery and spy novels which was obvious in his writing of short stories. Michael's pain is no more and he is now with family that had passed on before him. THOMPSON, Dr. Frederic Fraser October 22, 1913 - October 23, 2008 - Our lovely Pater died at Kingston General Hospital after a brief illness. A graduate of St. Catherine's College, Oxford, he served for many years as Professor of History, later Dean of Arts and Professor Emeritus with the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario. Born in Sheffield, England, Fred came to Newfoundland in the 1930's as a lay missionary with the Methodist Church. In 1947 he married Ruth Helen McDermott of Pitt Meadows, BC. They moved to Kingston in the 1950's and eventually settled at Meersbrook Farm. Together they raised three children; Sarah (Philip), Charlotte (Perryn, Aidan), Douglas (Aya, Haruna, Rentaro). BOOCK, Diane E. (nee Burgess) - In Loving Memory. After a short fight with cancer, beloved wife, mother, and friend, Diane, passed away at the age of 61 years in the early morning hours of Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008 at the Bluewater Health Centre in Sarnia. Diane is predeceased by parents John and Anna Burgess. Diane will be sadly missed by her spouse Svend, daughter Becky of Toronto, and sons Ryan and Craig of Sarnia. She will also be greatly missed by her brothers Tom (Michelle) and Jim Burgess of Sarnia, John Burgess of Calgary and sister Janet (Jay) McIsaac of Calgary. Diane's many nieces and nephews will also grieve her loss. Special thanks are extended to friends Wendy, Gloria, Janet, Mary, Shirley, Beverley, Deadra, and Dorothy for all the support and help they have provided in these difficult times. Gratitude is also expressed to the excellent nursing staff and Dr. Glen Madison of the palliative care centre; their compassion and dedication were paramount to easing the family's grief in Diane's last days. Diane's 32 years of service as a court reporter/clerk with the Ontario Ministry of Attorney General began with the magistrate Office in 1966 and ended with her retirement from the Justice Building on Christina Street in 1998. She also served for many years as a community volunteer with SMAA baseball. Cremation has taken place. Norm was proud to be a lifelong Point Edward resident. A veteran of World War II, he served with the Royal Canadian Navy. Norm served on the Point Edward Village Council for several years and also was a member of the Hydro Commission. BIRRELL, Norman (Veteran WWII, RAF) Peacefully in his 92nd year on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 in Ottawa. Cherished son of the late Norman Birrell and the late Ethel Fitzpatrick Birrell of Windermere, England. Beloved husband and best friend of the late Jane Davidson Birrell, his wife of almost 64 years. Loving father of Geoff and his wife Carole, Steven and Rodney. Cherished grandfather of Sandy and her husband Rick, Ann and her husband Greg, Emily, Joanna, Samantha and Tau and great-grandfather of Alex, Lydia, Karley, Selene and Luke. Born in England on December 1, 1916, Norman read law at the London School of Economics and never lost his passion for the written word. During WWII, he was a squadron leader with the RAF and was stationed in England, Canada, North Africa and Italy. Following WWII, Norman moved with Jane to Montreal where he eventually became president of Ronald's Printing. Formerly of Montreal and Toronto, Norman will be fondly remembered for his love of life and his commitment to his wife and family. Always smiling and happiest on the golf course, he will be forever in our hearts. A private funeral service will be held. McGUIRE, Karen Joan Passed away in peace and faith October 25, 2008 with her husband by her side in Burnaby, B.C. after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 50 years old. Karen was the beloved wife of Tony Turchinski and cherished sister of Ken (Jill) of Kelowna, David of Kimberly, B.C. and Valerie (Bob) of Ottawa. She was also the dearest aunt of Brooke, Chase, Tait and Lee and Andrew. Karen was predeceased by parents Louis and Marcella McGuire of Ottawa. She will be sadly missed by other family members, friends in the Vancouver area and close childhood friends in Ottawa, especially Angie and Marie. Karen has come home to Ottawa for burial. A Memorial Service will be held at Cedarview Alliance Church, 2784 Cedarview Road in Barrhaven on Tuesday, November 25 at 11 a.m. Her final resting place will be with Mom and Dad at Notre Dame Cemetery. Heartfelt gratitude to all who took such gracious care of Karen at Burnaby Hospital Palliative Care Unit and St. Michael's Hospice also in Burnaby, B.C. FOSTER, Ethel Jean (nee Rolston) February 15, 1914 - November 10, 2008 Ethel died peacefully at Buchanan Lodge, New Westminster. She was the last of her generation for our family. Born and raised in Vancouver, she was the youngest child of Tilly and Fred Rolston. Predeceased by her parents and siblings Robert and Audrey, and her husband Norman in 1976. She is survived by her daughter Janet (Maple Ridge), and sons Walter (Shirley), Michael (Lyse), Bill (Darlene) of Calgary and Tom (Laura) of New Westminster. She has eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Ethel was a graduate of UBC - BScN 1936. Before WWII, she taught nursing in Kamloops, Calgary and Edmonton. She returned to nursing in 1967 teaching at Mount Royal College, Calgary. Ethel and Norm raised their family in High River and Calgary before retiring to Sooke, BC in 1971. As an avid gardener and reader with a wide interest in all things, her strongest wish was that we "Be good to each other". We loved her dearly and will cherish our personal and shared memories. REED, Thomas (Tom) Patrick May 27, 1958 - November 20, 2008 Thomas Patrick Reed, beloved husband of Leigh Ann and devoted father of Lelland and Gerald, passed away on Thursday, November 20, 2008 after a courageous struggle with ALS at the age of 50 years. Tom was born in Regina, moved to Calgary as a young teen and graduated from Dr. E.P. Scarlett High School. He was well respected in the construction industry in Calgary and had a long-term career with Ledcor Industries Construction Division. Tom was a keen hockey player from the time he learned to skate until ALS sidelined him two years ago. Tom was also an avid golfer, an accomplished skier and a master of water sports at the Reed's retreat at Adventure Bay on Okanagan Lake. He is survived by his parents Vincent and Patricia Reed; his brother and best friend David (Datsie); and his sister Kathryn. He will be sadly missed by his in-laws Gayle and Tommy Calder; the McClelland and Hutchinson families; and his many friends and extended family from Calgary and afar.
