HOLT, Gordon Anthony - Passed away after a brief illness, on Monday, November 10, 2008 at North Bay General Hospital, in his 77th year. Cherished brother of Betty Kraft and Marian and Bruce Frieday and will be missed by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents, Melvin and Hilda Holt; step-mother, Marguarite Holt; sister and brother-in-law, Marg and Ray Martin; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Alf Schaefer; brother and sister-in-law Bill and Mary Holt; sister, Ada Holt, and brothers-in-laws, William Kraft and Cyril Davis. Gord was a longtime employee of General Springs and retired to Camp Horizon, in Field. For many years, he volunteered for St. John's Ambulance and the Kiwanis Club. He spent his final years in Sturgeon Falls. A memorial service will be held for family and friends on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at 1 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Field, ON. PERNA, Adelio Michael - Passed away peacefully at North Bay General Hospital, Friday, November 14, 2008, at the age of 82 Adelio Perna was the beloved husband of the late Elizabeth (née Fitzgerald) and loved father of Wanda Taylor (Robert). He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, Patrick, Sarah, Amber, Joshua and Jordan and one great-grandchild, Sarah. Dear brother of Julio (Jay) and Inez. He was loved and will be greatly missed by his extended family, Joseph, Ann, Dorothy, Sherry, Derek, Wanda and their families. He was predeceased by his son, Wayne, his parents, Giuseppina and Rocco Perna and one brother, Pierno ''Peter''. Adelio was a retired civil servant. He was an extraordinary minister at St. Rita's parish and he was also an avid racketball/ squash player and longtime member at the YMCA. HICKEY, Pat February 23, 1940 - November 13, 2008 Pat Hickey of Cochrane, beloved husband of Lynn for thirty-six years passed away on November 13, 2008 at the age of 68 years. Pat was born and raised in Daingean, Co. Offaly, Ireland. He worked for a number of years at Cronley's bottling Guinness and farming. Pat played football with the local club and won a senior championship in 1962. In 1968 he left Ireland to work in England where he met the love of his life Lynn, they married, had two children then immigrated to Canada in 1976 where they had three more children. Pat began working with cattle at Circle J Ranch and continued on with Alta Genetics when the family moved to Cochrane in 1984. Later in life Pat returned to the construction industry where he worked for Integra Contracting. He volunteered at the Irish Culture Society where he held many board positions. Pat enjoyed camping and spending time with his family and friends. He never lost his love for Ireland and often told stories about back home. Pat loved Gaelic football, Canadian football and hockey. He continued to work hard right up until August when he became ill and fought a courageous battle right until the end. Besides his loving wife Lynn, Pat is survived by his children: Jackie Rathwell, Gerry Hickey, Genean Hickey, Kevin Hickey and Colleen Hickey, son-in law Gerald Rathwell, grandchildren, Hannah and Justin Rathwell; brothers, Noel and his wife Celine Hickey, Ambrose and his wife Josie Hickey, all of Ireland, Eamon and his wife Maura Hickey of England, and Camillus and his wife Anne Hickey of Ireland; sisters, Janette and her husband Sean McCormack, Mary and her husband Liam O'Shaughnessy, all of Ireland; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and extended family. Pat was predeceased by his parents, Pat and Molly Hickey, his brother, Joe Hickey, and his nephew Darren Hickey. MACHON, Carolyn Diane Carolyn Diane Machon, age 44, passed away on November 10, 2008 after a long, courageous battle against breast cancer at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle, WA. Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Carolyn's passion for design and color lead her to a successful career in Interior Decorating in both Edmonton and Victoria, Canada. Moved to Seattle, WA 3 years ago for treatment, she turned her focus to spending time with friends, family and her many hobbies. Whether taking friends on guided shopping tours, going to Yoga and Tai Chi classes or taking friends and family to Disneyland, her enthusiasm for life and her undying belief in overcoming cancer never waned. Her compassion and selfless nature left an impression on all those she touched. She is survived by her loving husband of 14 years Frank Rohrschneider; parents, Kenneth and Ollie Machon of Canada; sister, Trish and brother, Gordon of Canada. McLAUGHLIN, Captain Robert Hugh Captain Robert Hugh McLaughlin was born February 22, 1923 in Chilliwack, B.C. He left us November 12, 2008 in Saanich Peninsula Hospital surrounded by his loving family. A veteran of the Second World War, Bob served Canada in the Air Force. Lots of other professions crossed his path but the one he loved best was a Captain of a Fisheries Research Vessel for the Biological Station in Nanaimo, B.C. A kind and gentle man with a terrific sense of humour, he loved doing things for others in an understated way. He was devoted to wife, Joan, and endeavored to make her every wish come true. Bob was survived by Joan, and children: Ruth Barnes (Brian), Dennis DeFrane (Kris) and Marilyn Woodward (Brian). RALPH, Stanley October 10th , 1915 November 2nd, 2008 Passed away peacefully at 93 years of age. Born and raised in Victoria, Stan worked for many years at McGill and Orme and was well respected for the active role he played as a member of First Baptist Church. Stan was predeceased in April by his beloved wife Margaret. SHORTREED, Jack (Shorty) It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Jack Shortreed, on November 13, 2008, due to complications from heart surgery. He was born in Nanaimo, June 18, 1928 and attended school in Caycuse and Extention. He graduated in Duncan and went to work with his Dad firing locomotive. In 1950 he married Nelda Reid (The Warden) and then went to work in Kemano for Morrison Knuteson, as a lineman. They moved to Duncan in 1955 and continued working as a lineman for B.C. Hydro till his retirement. He enjoyed photography, computers, gardening, wood working and spending time with his grandchildren, great grandchildren and his little dog Babe". Pre-deceased by his mother and father and his sister (best friend) Loraine. He is survived by his wife Nelda of 57 years, 6 children, Ric (Marlene), Gary (Carrie), Greig, Jeanette (Dave), Jennifer (Pete) and Leigh, along with 12 grandchildren, and 5 Great grandchildren. Also survived by his 2 sisters, Kay Rogers and Jeanie Virtanen, his two sister-inlaws, Hen and Marge Reid, brother in law Lyle Reid and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dr. Wong, Dr. Meakes, Barb and Jan, and all the nurses for their exceptional care on the third, fourth, and fifth floors of the Royal Jubilee Hospital. ISLEY, Sonya May 30, 1964 - November 12, 2008 God called one of his precious ones home too soon.Born in Calgary, May 30, 1964, Sonya was a loving soulmate to her husband Gerry. Together they operated GIT Landscape Supplies and GIT Salers. She passed suddenly November 12, 2008. Sonya was a wonderful mother to her adored children, Taylor, Riley, and Cody and cherished the special family vacations to the United States, B.C., Mexico, and Germany that they were able to enjoy. She will remain their "Guardian Angel" forever. Predeceased by her sister Susan, Sonya will be sorely missed by her parents Frank and Pauline Schmid and Gerry's family, Gerald and Jean Isley; sister Toni (Ken) Garlock; brothers, Scott and Kelly (Nancy); and loving nieces and nephews, Caitlyn, Breanna, Braden, Andrew, Marshal, and Alex. Sonya had a passion for animals, in particular raising and showing Salers cattle with her family. She was so thrilled by the many banners they won at Edmonton Farm Fair last weekend and so proud of her children's many 4-H and academic successes. As a hard working and dedicated community worker Sonya was a director on the Alberta Salers Association board, a senior leader in the Bow Valley 4-H club, and a board member at the Dalemead Church. She will be missed by her many friends and family who loved her and relied on her strengths. BODIE, Lydia Victoria (nee Cymbaluk) November 20, 1936 - November 13, 2008 Vicki Bodie, beloved wife of Gordon Bodie of Calgary, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 13, 2008 at the age of 71 years. Vicki and Gordon were married on March 21, 1959, and would have celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary next spring. Besides her loving husband, she is survived by her children Lynne and Perry of Calgary and Rae Ellen of Toronto; son-in-law Ian Muir; grandchildren Zachary, Kurtis and Kayleigh and nine cherished siblings. For all her many accomplishments and successes in life, Vicki will be most remembered for how totally she loved her family, her joyful, optimistic outlook on life and her quick and easy laughter. GOODWIN, Sandra Jean (nee Wise) Written by Sandra last month: Sandra died of lung cancer on Friday, November 14th, 2008 lovingly cared for by her husband David, her Hospice nurses and doctors and her dear good friends. She died quietly at home just as she wished. Born in Winnipeg in 1938, she grew up there and graduated from the University of Manitoba with a BA in l958 and a BPed and AMM music diploma in 1959. In 1959, she married David Alexander Goodwin who had just graduated in Medicine. For the first two years of their marriage they lived in Winnipeg while David did his internship and a year of residence and Sandra taught school at Hugh John MacDonald. In 1961 they moved to Montreal for David to pursue further medical training and Sandra became a music specialist with the Protestant School Board of Montreal. Their two sons were born at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Robert in 1963 and Daniel in 1964. In 1965 they moved to Baltimore for David to train in Nuclear Medicine. In 1967 he was offered a position at Stanford University in the Dept of Nuclear Medicine. They moved to Palo Alto and had a happy and busy life there with Sandra teaching piano and actively involved with the Music Teachers Association of California. For a number of years during the seventies, Sandra and David took Robert & Daniel to England for the month of August. They rode bicycles, stayed in B&Bs and forged strong bonds with their English cousins. They all became passionate lovers of the English countryside. In l974 -75 they spent a sabbatical year in London during which Sandra earned an Associate Degree from the Royal College of Music in London. Her passion in life was music and children. She adored teaching piano and felt it was a privilege to teach beautiful music and be in close touch with young people. Her bond with her teaching colleagues was a tremendous enrichment to her life and her students brought her great joy. She remained very close to a number of them until her death. David and Sandra met as teenagers in the Manitoba Schools Orchestra both playing the cello. They carried on playing together in orchestras in Winnipeg, Montreal, Baltimore and in California for over 30 years and loving every minute of the opportunity to play the large orchestral works as well as being part of the opera each year. Their most treasured experience was the seven years playing in the Stanford Symphony Orchestra under Sandor Salgo, their revered mentor who became a long-time dear friend. In 2003, David and Sandra moved to Victoria BC after they retired. They were overjoyed with the wealth of music and the wonderful friends that they found there. Chamber music was their shared passion, loving to play with friends and listening to it. They attended nearly every chamber music concert that they could and were thrilled when the Emily Carr String Quartet was formed two years ago, making two fine resident quartets in Victoria. Sandra has requested that there be no service. HODGINS, Marty (formerly of Patty's Place Pub) Passed away peacefully Saturday, November 15, 2008 at the age of 60, after a dignified battle with Cancer. Marty died as he lived, surrounded by his family and many friends. He had a generous heart and humour, and will be forever remembered fondly by all who met him. Marty was the beloved friend and partner of Janet Bowers, loving father of Korrie and Tira Hodgins, and the dear brother of Gloria Brophy, Marilyn (Peter Gray), Sue (Sam Dattilo), Art (Kerry Hodgins), Pat McNamara and the late Carol Hodgins. Marty also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who will miss his special spirit and kindness. TATE, Walter Raymond Walter Tate passed away early on Tuesday, November 11th (Remembrance Day) at Victoria General Hospital. Walter was a devoted father, husband and brother, a skilled engineer, and was known throughout Victoria for his talent on the rugby field and cricket pitch. Walter was born Christmas Eve, 1932, in Cumbria, UK, and grew up in Harrington. As a young man, Walter played cricket and rugby, worked at the Workington steel mill, and attended trade school as a draftsman. Despite his deep love of Cumbria and the Lake District, he emigrated, along with his mother Florence, father Joseph, and brothers George, Reginald and John, to Winnipeg in 1951. Walter quickly began work at Manitoba Hydro and made many friends in Winnipeg, where he also sang in the Winnipeg Male Voice Choir. He moved to British Columbia in 1955, eventually settling in Victoria. Here, he resumed his great love affair with sports, playing for the Victoria and BC cricket teams, and playing rugby with the Oak Bay team. He was also active at the Racquet Club, where he played squash, racquetball and tennis, and taught his children to swim. Walter was very outgoing, and was very active in social circles throughout Victoria. He was also a vocational engineer who has contributed his design skill to many of the bridges and highways across British Columbia. Walter worked for twenty-seven years with the Ministry of Highways, and then moved on to work for private companies in the last two decades, where he found great companionship among his colleagues, and took joy and pride in his every day work. Walter met the love of his life, his wife Candace, in early 1975, through mutual friends. They were married the same year, and settled at Walter's home in south Oak Bay, where they remained for the rest of Walter's life. Walter deeply loved the natural beauty of Victoria, and remarked often that he thought Oak Bay was paradise. He enjoyed watching rugby and cricket in Windsor Park after he retired from the sports, and loved spending time looking out at the Straits from the Oak Bay shoreline. He instilled this love of Oak Bay in his children, along with his strong personal values of trust, honor and loyalty. Walter is survived by his devoted wife, Candace, his brothers, Reg and George (of Richmond) and John (of Sidney), his loving children, Andrew and Louise (of Vancouver), Monica (of Toronto) and Jillian (of Los Angeles), his grandson, Benjamin, and his loyal dog, Riley. Walter was a great positive influence on the lives of his family, and will be missed every day by those who loved him, although we know he is enjoying that "great rugby field in the sky" (as he used to say). There will be no formal service, as per Walter's request, and a private memorial will be held at a later date.
