OBITUARY GEORGE THOMAS BAIRD July 8, 1949 - October 29, 2008 George passed away at his home in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, after a brave fight with cancer. He was born and grew up in Montreal and later moved out West and eventually to Yellowknife in the 1980's. He will be sadly missed by his wife Marie Coe; his children Annie, George, Alex, Julie and Evan; his brothers John (Diane) of Gananoque, Ont. and Jim (Nadene) of Ft. McMurray, AB. his sisters Bonnie (Gary) Laybourne of Athabasca, AB; and Debbie (Stewart) Marlin of Ft. McMurray, AB. He leaves twelve grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents George and Alice Baird. Memorial services were held in Yellowknife on November 3, 2008. OBITUARY DR. IRWIN SCOTT DISHER It is with great sadness that we announce our father's death. He died peacefully at the Montreal Jewish General Hospital on Monday, September 22, 2008 at the age of eighty-three, following a five month battle with pneumonia and lung disease. The son of Clarence Edward Disher and Lily Whyte of Vancouver, Irwin is predeceased by brother Edward and sister Joanne. He will be greatly missed by his daughters Charlotte and Catherine, grandson Darcy, niece Nancy and great-niece Carol. He is also survived by his son Scott and various Vancouver-based nieces and nephews. As a physician, he was a long-time member of the Department of Child Psychiatry at the Montreal Children's Hospital. Up until his death, he was an active member of the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society and during a long and dedicated career, he was a valued teacher and mentor in Child Psychiatry at McGill University. A memorial service in his honour will be held on Sunday, November 23, 2008 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at the Mount Royal Cemetery Crematorium, 1297 Chemin de la Foret, Outremont, Quebec. OBITUARY GERALD (GERHARD) ELBRECHT At the age of fifty-six, of Montreal, PQ passed away September 26 in a cycling accident on Mount Royal. Born in Montreal, and after graduating from Concordia University, Gerald continued to reside in Montreal. For much of his professional career, Gerald worked independently on his own business ventures. More recently, he held the position of Director, Mining Investments for Global Capital Group. Gerald displayed un-common commitment to all of his projects and met challenges with unfaltering resolve. He was admired for his abilities but was not able to achieve his potential. His life was cut short as he was reaching his stride, but his memory will remain in our hearts. He is survived by his sister, Linda Palin, of Toronto, ON, and his brother, Alex Elbrecht, of Watchung, NJ. PHEMISTER, Robert “Bob” The death occurred at the Halifax Infirmary, Halifax, N.S., on Thursday, November 13, 2008, of Robert “Bob” Phemister of Summerside, aged 52 years. Born in Montreal, Que., he was the son of the late Ian and Hildred (MacMurdo) Phemister. Survived by his brothers, Bill, Fredericton, N.B.; Bruce (Marlene) Phemister, Ajax, Ont.; niece Genevieve, nephew Ian and will be missed by his cherished pets Sandy, Pablo and Chico. Predeceased by his grandparents, Archie and Genevieve (Burhoe) MacMurdo of Summerside. MAYOTTE, Violet 2008-11-15 MAYOTTE Violet Mayotte (nee Digby), age 89 years, resident of Hogarth Riverview Manor, previously of Ruttan Street, passed away on November 9th, 2008. Born at home in Hymers, she lived her early years there with her parents Harry and Alice, brother Alfred, sister Sylvia and step-brother Harry. As a young girl, age 13, she moved to Port Arthur and worked for her room and board in order to go to highschool. She then worked in Beardmore, at Port Arthur Shipyards and at the John Inglis Plant in Toronto during the war. When her family was grown she worked as a Red Cross Homemaker. In 1943, she married Norman (Jerry) and together they raised 3 daughters. Jerry and the girls were the center of her life and she was totally devoted to caring for her family. She was a kind, caring, thoughtful and dignified woman. These qualities shone through the veil of Alzheimer‘s which she suffered from for a number of years. Survived by daughters Geraldine Mayotte-Skeels (Bryan) of Alberta, Joan Mayotte (Leena) of Australia, Virginia Joyce (Richard) of Thunder Bay, grandchildren Carey, Ryan and Genny as well as nine great grandchildren. Predeceased by her husband Jerry, great-grandchild Bridget, her parents, all siblings, niece Patty and her good friend Emma. Cremation has taken place and as per Violet’s wishes, no service will be held. Interment will take place at a later date. PATOLA, Aune 2008-11-15 Mrs. Aune Sylvia Elizabeth Patola, passed away peacefully in her 86th year after a brief illness, in St. Joseph‚s Hospital on Monday, November 10, 2008, with her family by her side. Aune was born on January 20, 1923 in Port Arthur to Mr. & Mrs. Antilla. She grew up in the city and worked for a number of years at the Hoito Restaurant, Dawson Court, and Canada Car. Aune married her husband John in 1942, and together had seven children. She was an avid gardener and bowler, enjoyed cooking, travelling, and was a champion crib player. Aune and John enjoyed life to the fullest until his passing in 1987. In later years, Aune devoted her time to various organizations including Mended Hearts and the 55 Plus Centre where she found many friendships and met her long time companion, Basil Wallden. Aune is survived and will be sadly missed by her sons: John (Margaret) Patola, Tim (Patricia) Patola; daughter Karen Smith; her numerous grandchildren; and great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents; brothers: Walter and Bill; husband John; children: Marianne, Kenny, Kathy and Michael. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 17th, 2008 in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, officiated by Rev. Father of Donna Dickson (Domenic Bombardieri), Virginia McIntyre (husband Pat predeceased) all of Toronto and Don Dickson of Sudbury. Don was the grandfather of 8. Missed by his sister Patricia Sancartier of Sudbury. He was the son of the late John and Florence (Orr) Dickson. Predeceased by his sister Florence James and by brothers James, Bob, Stuart and Douglas. Missed by many nieces and nephews. Born in Sudbury, he worked as an orderly at the Memorial Hospital for many years. He enjoyed the company of his friends, whether it was at the mall, playing cards or the guitar for them. Don was a thrifty man who considered himself a great philosopher. A memorial service will be held at the JACKSON and BARNARD FUNERAL HOME, 233 Larch St., Sudbury on Tuesday, November 18th, 2008 at 3:00 pm. Cremation at the Park Lawn Crematorium. Pat loved the out-of doors and everything that lives and grows. She served on the executive of the Sault Naturalists Club and was an ardent bird watcher. She was a long-time member of the Ski Patrol and was a ski instructor. She was a volunteer leader at YMCA and RYTAC and served on the board. We ask you to join in a celebration of Pat's life at a Memorial Service at St. Andrew's United Church on Friday, November 28, 2008 at 1:30 pm. DIMMERY, Mabel 2008-11-15 MABEL DIMMERY Mrs. Mabel Dimmery, age 92 years, resident of Pioneer Ridge passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 9, 2008 with her family at her side. Mabel was born in January 1916 in Liverpool, England and immigrated to Canada with her husband Clifford after WW II. They settled in White River and later Schreiber where she worked at Caccamo‘s Grocery and the CPR. In 1967, after the death of her husband Mabel moved with her daughters to Thunder Bay and worked for many years as a Federal Civil Servant for the UIC and Board of Grain Commission. After retirement, Mabel travelled extensively with family and friends and participated in numerous activities; golfing, bowling, cross country skiing, exercises and dancing at the Herb Carroll Centre. She supported Magnus Theatre, and the Auditorium, and volunteered at the Sports Hall of Fame and the Thunder Bay Museum. Mabel was an active member of St. Paul‘s Anglican Church and the Altar Guild for many years. Time with her family was her greatest joy, always supportive, never complaining, making us all laugh and taught us to enjoy each day. Mabel is survived by her daughters Pat Hamilton (Jim), Brenda Connors (Carl), Carol Safronuk (Steve); Cliff‘s daughter Irene Melchior (Wolfgang) and family; grandchildren Christopher (Julie), Andrew, Jeffrey, Darren (Jen), Heather (Justin), Ronda (Doug) and Kelly; great grandchildren Shelby, Danni, Aidan, Taylyn, Keelyn, Skyler and Connor. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive in Canada and in England. She was predeceased by husband Clifford, parents William and Kate Murray and sister Edna Murray. Mabel coped with Alzheimer‘s disease for many years and managed to keep her feisty spirit to the end. Funeral services for the late Mrs. Mabel Dimmery will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at St Paul‘s Anglican Church with the Rev. Deborah Kraft officiating. JULIA JOAN SMIGIEL- (nee: Kowalchuk) It is with sadness that we share the passing of Julia. She died unexpectedly the evening of Thursday, November 13th, 2008. She is predeceased by her mother Mary (1970), her father David (1981), brother David Sonny (1994), and her favourite niece Cheryl Pielak (2008). Julia is survived by her husband of 45 years, Bernie, daughters: Nadine of Regina, and Nicole (Kelly Phillipchuk) and her two grandchildren Curtis and Kylie of Estevan. Julia also leaves behind two brothers, Ken Kowalchuk (Eve), Thunder Bay, ON, and Allan Kowalchuk (Roxanne), Edmonton, AB, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Julia worked at Sears when she first moved to Regina in 1960. She also worked at the Regina Senior Citizens Centre for 18 years as a Ceramics Instructor. Julia was a very giving and thoughtful person. She was an amazing cook and baker and shared her love of cooking with those around her in the form of cookies, cakes, squares and delicious meals. DOLEJSI-Just one day after Remembrance Day on November 12, 2008, Peter Dolejsi, another great veteran has passed away at the age of 94. Peter had lived a long and good life with his family in the city of Regina. Peter will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 58 years, Helen; his sons Greg Hayes, Jack (Brianna) Dolejsi, Darcy (Karen) Dolejsi; his grandsons, Kael and Dustin Dolejsi; granddaughter Lori (Lawrence) Johnson; great-grandchildren, Mariah, Declan, Erin and Eysten; as well as numerous relatives and friends. Peter will always be remembered for giving a helping hand to his children, grandchildren and friends. He would always seem to have the right advice. HICKLING, JOAN - After slipping into a coma, Joan passed away at the age of 74. Mourning her passing are Bob, her husband of 55 years, daughter Joanne (Vern Neuls) of Regina, son Rob (Chinatsu and grandson Adam) of Tokyo, Japan, sister and brother in-law, Donna and Andy Hartung of Regina, and brother and sister-in-law, Victor and Sharron Roberts (nephew Colin) of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. She was privileged to have had Kay Young as a fabulous and long time best friend. She looked forward to and enjoyed the company of her granddog, Bailey. Joan was a thoughtful and supportive family member and friend, never wanting to put others out but giving of herself. She had a quirky sense of humour and fun. Joan was a great organizer, financial planner, cook, gardener, seamstress, knitter, crafter, and only in her mind, singer. The family would like to thank the many people in health care who Joan encountered during the last few weeks who demonstrated integrity, compassion, kindness and respect. At Joan's request, no funeral service will be held; instead, when enjoying a scrumptious dessert, raise a fork and think of a special time you shared with her. PETERSON-On Tuesday, November 12, 2008, Mr. Fletcher V. Peterson, late of Regina passed away at the age of 90 years. Fletcher was born in Radville, SK on November 18, 1917. BURLING-GRIFFIN, Victoria Colleen (nee V. Colleen HAYES) Passed away peacefully at her home in Cary, North Carolina on Monday October 20, 2008. Victoria is survived by her loving family; husband of 25 years John; mother Rita; brother Russell; sisters Elizabeth Hayes and Lois (Ken) Yamamoto; nephew Robert Hayes and niece Jennifer Hayes. Victoria was predeceased by her father Rex in 2003 and her brother Rex Jr. in 1997. Victoria was born in Victoria BC on June 6, 1955 and raised in Oak Bay. She married John in 1983 and later moved to Boston MA, where they lived for 11 years. In 2007 Victoria and John moved to Cary NC, where they found their perfect house and garden. Victoria died at home; unaware of the seriousness of her condition, enjoying her surroundings and being thankful for the wonderful place they were living. HAINES, George William (Bill) Born November 29 1936 in Oshawa, Ontario. Died November 12, 2008 at the Priory, Victoria. It is with great sadness we say goodbye to our husband, stepfather, step grandfather. Bill was predeceased by his mother, Edna Barwick, father George Haines, stepfather Jack Barwick and sister Dorothy Forster.
