HARPIN Mme Gisèle 1921-2008 Au Centre hospitalier de Granby, le 12 novembre 2008, à l'âge de 87 ans, est décédée Mme Gisèle Harpin, demeurant à Granby, fille de feu Lionel Harpin et de feu Marie-Anne Henri, et épouse en premières noces de feu Lucien St-Onge et en secondes noces de feu Edouard Monty. Elle laisse dans le deuil ses enfants : Lucie (Paul Gaucher), Louise (Jean-Luc Gousy), Gilles (Diane Hunter). Elle était aussi la mère de feu Réal. Elle laisse également ses petits-enfants, Julie et Johanne Gaucher, Stéphane Messier, Kathy St-Onge, Kévyn Goyette, Daniel, Patrick et Sandra St-Onge. Elle était la grand-mère de feu Pascal Messier. Elle laisse aussi ses arrière-petits-enfants, Olivier et Stéphanie Beaudry, Danick, Yan, Xavier, Mathis, Kévin Messier, Stéphanie et Émilie St-Onge, Jason Mercier, et un arrière-arrière-petit-fils Anthony Beaudry. Lui survivent son frère Henri (Aline), ses soeurs, Estelle (Paul) et Thérèse; sa belle-soeur Annette, ses beaux-frères, Normand (Sally) et Marcel (Annette), ainsi que plusieurs neveux, nièces, autres parents et ami(e)s et particulièrement Bibiane et Mariette. CHEN, Ken Ken Chen of Calgary, passed away on November 8, 2008 at the age of 80 years old. He was predeceased by Mamie, his wife of sixty years, who had passed away only four days previous. Ken was lovingly supported and consoled by his four sons and three daughters in dealing with the passing of Mamie. Ken (Pak Kin) was born in Guandong Toysun Thum Hup Savun Toon Chil Heng Li, China on February 27, 1928. He was the youngest of three boys born to Chen Mon Fun and his wife. In 1953, Mamie and Ken immigrated to Canada and settled in Calgary. Since 1953, he spent most of that time in the restaurant business in Calgary and Brooks, Alberta. Initially, he worked for his father, who had successfully owned the Fours Winds Cafe (formerly located south of the Bay) and the Modern Cafe (formerly situated on the site of the current Performing Arts Centre). In 1960, Ken and Mamie relocated their family to Brooks, where they successfully owned and operated their own restaurant. Upon his return to Calgary in 1968, he spent twenty-five years working for the Sheftel family, former owners of the Highlander, the Empress, Carriage House and the Blackfoot Inn. As result of this vast experience, Ken had the opportunity to meet and serve farmers, ranchers, firefighters, RCMP and policemen, local and provincial politicians, and many other patrons. He garnered many praises for his extensive repertoire of food specialties. His family will particularly have sentimental memories of his butterhorns, boston cream pies, and especially, the prime rib at Christmas time. Ken leaves behind a legacy of seven children who have each successfully established their own lives. He is survived by his children Jean (Jing and children), Edward (Betty, children Harrison and Brendan), Henry (Elaine), Bill (Karin), Jim (Jean), Phylis (Michael and son, Jeffrey), and Lily. Ken was also predeceased by his older brothers Chen Pak Jil and Chen Pak Yil. A Funeral Service will be held at FOSTER'S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 - 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen's Park Cemetery) on Saturday, November 15, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. with Interment to follow at Queen's Park Cemetery. CAHILL, Louis J. - Died peacefully on Wednesday November 12, 2008, at the St. Catharines General Hospital at the age of 94. Lou is survived by his children: Patricia Waters, Nancy (Neil) Leger, and Denis (Bridget) Cahill who will greatly miss his enduring presence in their daily lives. Lou is predeceased by his parents, Walter and Louisa, his brothers Walter and Leo, his loving wife of 39 years Dorothea (Hallenbeck) (1976), his friend and companion Gladys Bassett (1994), his son in law Phil Waters (1997) and his grandson Mark Waters (2008). His nine remaining grandchildren: Linda (Peter) Dirks, Tymn (Rebecca) Waters, Lori Waters, Christopher (Kara) Waters, Dan (Nancy) Leger, Laura (Patrick) Leger-Sum, Deirdre Cahill, Terence (Yvonna) Cahill, Ciaran Cahill mourn the loss of their beloved Poppa and remember with fondness all the great educational tours, rides on the Carousel and the many trips for ice cream as well as his ongoing interest and support of all their endeavours. Eight great grandchildren also survive their Great Poppa: Kate and Emma Dirks, Caillie and Harris Waters, Hannah and Caelan Sum, Madison and Justin Leger. He enjoyed seeing photos and hearing details of the latest exploits of this new generation in the family that was so important to him. His sister in law Theresa Taylor and several nieces and nephews also survive. Lou began his career as a reporter for the St. Catharines Standard in 1932 and then moved on to open the Niagara News Bureau. The Niagara Editorial Bureau followed in 1946, one of the earliest Public Relations firms in Canada, earning him the title Dean of Public Relations. The Niagara Editorial Bureau became the Ontario Editorial Bureau in 1949 and is now known as OEB Enterprise. Lou never retired. He didn't know how. At 92 he was still going to the office everyday until a fall and subsequent health problems made it impossible for him to continue his daily routine. A life long resident of St. Catharines, Lou was a community leader. His PR work locally, provincially, nationally and internationally earned him many awards and commendations from his community, business associates and his peers. An active member of the Catholic Church, Lou also worked very closely with the Diocese of St. Catharines representing them in the areas of media and communications. In recognition of his more than 50 years of communication service on behalf of the Church he was awarded the papal medal - Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice This is the highest honour bestowed on a layman in the Catholic Church. Lou's love for his country and his community was evident in his constant promotion of our history and heritage especially with regard to The Welland Canal. A walking encyclopedia of the history of St. Catharines and area Lou was the “go to“ person for local history. Lou is resting at the GEORGE DARTE FUNERAL HOME, 585 Carlton St., St Catharines. Visiting hours are Saturday, November 15 and Sunday November 16 from 1-5 pm. Vigil prayers will be held in the Funeral Home on Sunday at 3:30pm. TUCK, Keith Douglas (Doug) August 31, 1939 November 10, 2008 - Sally's best friend, partner and husband since 1962 slipped away on Monday, November 10, in his favourite room at his favourite place - Wingit Farm. He almost loved Wingit as much as he loved his three children Greg, Carrie and Blair (and his dog Taiko). He was always (well almost always!) a devoted, generous and supportive father. He encouraged all the members of his family to be themselves and follow their own dreams. He was an indulgent Papa to Carrie's daughter Maya. He leaves a gaping hole in our lives and in the lives of Sally's brothers Doug and Bill Johnson and their families. But he remains alive for us as his spirit will forever guide us. Doug was born in Kirkland Lake and spent his childhood in Matachewan and Yellowknife. He was educated at Upper Canada College and Ryerson University. Doug's business career was spent on Bay Street at Wisner and Partners, Burns Brothers and Denton, Jones Heward and Nesbitt Burns. As a Portfolio Manager he watched the roller coaster markets. His clients relied on his sound judgment, detailed research and absolute integrity. Doug's passions after his family and Wingit were skiing and golf. Sally and Doug also loved their travels especially the family trips. A family service has been held. There will be a celebration of Doug's life at Wingit (near Thornbury) on Friday, November 14, 4-7 p.m. and on Sunday, November 15, 5-7 p.m. in the Glass Room at the Royal Ontario Museum (use the Michael Lee Chin Crystal entrance on Bloor Street). Gorr, Gertrude, Mrs. - August 29, 2008 Fill not your hearts with pain and sorrow, But remember me in every tomorrow. It is with heartfelt sorrow that we announce the peaceful death of our dear mother, Joanna Xuereb Farrugia, at the age of one hundred and two on August 29, 2008. Cherished and beloved wife of the late Anthony Farrugia. Mother of fifteen children, seven of whom are deceased, including Joseph, Sylvio, Louis, Carmen and her eldest son Joe and his wife Lillian. She will be lovingly remembered by her remaining children, Gladys (Tony Farrugia), Doris (Steve Vogtle), Vivian (Joe Castaldi), Isabella (Charlie Cuschieri), Eileen (Doug Newmarch), Tony (Barbara), Victor (Betty) and Daria (Salvatore Fuda). Survived by sister Mary McDonald, sisters-in-law Sr. Stefanina Farrugia and Stella Farrugia, Rita Farrugia (Effie Naudi) and brother-in-law Frank Farrugia (Vivi). Devoted grandmother of twenty-seven grandchildren, one of whom, Michael, is deceased and forty-six great-grandchildren. She leaves to mourn many friends and relatives around the world, in Australia, Malta, U.S.A. and Britain, with one niece Marlene Sciberras in Toronto. Mother touched countless lives through her kindness, prayers and deep faith as well as her enormous love for children. She set an example for us all. The family wishes to thank all the staff at Westburn Manor; Etobicoke, where mother spent her last two years. LANGLOIS, Paul - On November 10th, 2008 at 9:15 p.m., a great man passed away from us! Mr. Joseph Paul Etienne Langlois had a big heart full of love for us all but unfortunately it failed on this day. Mr. Langlois leaves behind a loving wife Anna Lynch Langlois and son Paul Jr. Langlois. He also leaves a daughter Juanita Mallabar and grandson Jesse. His son Eddy and wife Linda Langlois, son's Roger and Tommy Langlois, daughter Laura and husband Glen Garrod, a sister Georgette Labreche. He leaves behind several grandkids, Jimmy, Cindi, Mandy, Jessica, Ashley, Jason, Christine, Jennifer, Terri Lynn, Patrick, Jamie as well as many friends that have been very supportive throughout the years. Mr. Langlois has filled his life with joy and happiness through his love of music, playing several instruments including his favourite the fiddle. Originally from Iroquois Falls near Timmins, Ontario, Paul Langlois was a northern boy who lived up to the true northern expectations, rugged, although gentle, a strong hand shake was always necessary, a stern voice, and a man, whose word, you could always count on. He lived a prosperous life as a father and as a friend he will always be an inspiration to us all. It is truly a loss to all that have had the opportunity to meet such a great individual who shared his talents with us all to enjoy. We'll all miss him more than words can express. He'll always be in our hearts, we'll love him always rest in peace. Philipenko, Katherine November 8, 1929 - August 31, 2008 It is with great sadness the family of Kay Philipenko announce her passing on Sunday, August 31st, 2008 at the age of 78 years. Mom was born on November 8th, 1929, near Carpentar, SK., to Mike and Mary Kawchuk. She told us many stories of growing up on the family farm and it was amazing how the school moved further away with each telling. As a young woman she moved to British Columbia and worked there for a time before returning to the farm to look after her sick father. She met and later married her husband Orest in 1950. They then moved to Saskatoon to raise their family and have remained there since. Mom was employed at St. Paul’s Hospital for many years until her retirement. She loved to garden and many would pass the house to admire her and Dad’s efforts. Mom would always try to send us home with a batch of fresh vegetables and her wonderful perogies and cabbage rolls. She is survived and lovingly remembered by her husband Orest; daughters Judy LaBrash, Iris (Monty) Meikle; son Dan (Linda); grandchildren Colette (Jim) O’Brien, Tammy Coakwell (Trevor Balzer) and Lee Philipenko (Michelle Drew); sisters Janet McCabe, Doris (Russell) Billings, Ann Kachur, Sophie (Bud) Reed, Betty Stevens; brothers John (Ann) Kawchuk, Matt (Anne) Kawchuk; great aunt Sophie Shinkaruk; brother-in-law Pete (Elsie) Philipenko; sister-in-law Theresa Kamineski; numerous nieces and nephews. CRYSDALE, Thelma Bernice (Holmes) 1914-2008 - With a gentle smile, Thelma quietly slipped away on Tuesday, November 11th. Beloved wife of the late Dr. Stewart Crysdale (2002); dearest Mom of Ann (Jack Gourlie) and David (Cindy Watkins) in Orillia; beloved grandmother of Peter in Burkina Faso, Africa, and Carolyn in Kingston; daughter of the late Bryan and Estella Holmes of Dresden, Ontario; cherished sister and sister-in-law of Leato Wetherald (Murray), the late Edna Avery (Ed), Allen and Ida Holmes, Gerald and Wilda Holmes and Jean Law (Allan); caring aunt and great-aunt; steadfast and true friend of many. Thelma's great skill and love of music drew her into teaching. She introduced the joys of music to thousands of students in the Chatham, Ontario area, B.C., San Francisco and Toronto before retiring almost 30 years ago. Sixty years of her life were spent with Stewart, first as a ministerial couple with the United Church of Canada in the Cariboo and Okanagan areas of B.C., Brantford, Ontario and Toronto; and then doing sociological research in the fields of family, youth and education. She offered unending support to his career, travelling across Canada, in the Middle East, the Far East, Australia, Russia and Europe. Thelma was always ready for a challenge, whether it was trying a new recipe for bear meat, roofing a cottage, riding a Thai elephant at 76, solving a fiendish crossword, penning a brilliant poem, getting a new car at 90 or flying in a Cessna at 93. She was often referred to by others as a truly amazing lady and an inspiring example. Thelma lived a gracious and multi-faceted life, always giving of herself to those around her. She loved to bring people together for fun and vivacious discussions, or a hand or two of bridge or euchre. For her family and students, Thelma was a very special mentor, with loving, supportive interest in their studies, travels, friends and career paths. She brightened the day for everyone when times were tough, bringing a sense of humour and a calm confidence that things would always get better. Even those who met her only once were struck by her spirit, lively ideas, her love of life and of course her perfectly coordinated outfits. Special thanks go to Dr. Maarthen Reinders for his superb care of our mother. Bologna, Mario, Mr. January 20, 1926 - August 28, 2008 On Thursday, August 28, 2008, Mario Bologna of Edmonton passed away peacefully at the age of 82 years and joined his late wife, Maria Bologna. He is survived by his two daughters, Lorette (Rick) Worsfold and Sandra (Todd) Burgoyne, and his grandson, Andre Worsfold. Dad was a loyal and dedicated husband and father. He was the founder of G&M Stone Masonry. Known as a superb and gifted craftsman with stone and brick, he created many landmarks in Edmonton and throughout Alberta. Brand, Edward Douglas, Mr. November 12, 1927 - August 20, 2008, Born November 12, 1927 in Nipawin, Saskatchewan. Ed passed away peacefully on August 20, 2008 in the loving presence of his daughters Judy and Debi at his home, Amica at Arbutus Manor, Vancouver, BC. His last days were spent surrounded by all his children, grandchildren and great-grandson. Predeceased by his dear and loving wife, Jean on September 18, 1999 and his long time fishing buddy, Craig Davis on July 14, 2008. Ed owned and operated the IGA on 14th and Granville and upon retirement enjoyed many memorable moments curling and traveling to Mesa, Arizona. His greatest joy was being with friends and family at the cabin on Shuswap Lake where many happy gatherings took place. Ed was a dedicated father to Judy Brand, Debi (Eric) VanDenKerkhof and Bob (Wilma) Brand, a doting grandfather to Lisa (Al) Jones, Michael (Amy) Davis, Kevin VanDenKerkhof, Kristina (Bessam) Alhashimi, Shaun (Rachel) VanDenKerkhof, Lindsay, Jaime and Kendall Brand. Ed was the proud great-grandfather to Jaxon Edward Jones and Xavier Alhashimi. The family would like to thank his many long time friends for their support, the dedicated staff at Amica and the cheerful friendships of his dining buddies. Followes, Willa May, Baby September 26, 2008 - August 21, 2008, Although Willa May Followes was born earlier than expected to parents Kathleen Alison Bush and David Thomas Followes, she was healthy, vibrant, and beautiful, and arrived with her own personality. She made it easy for us to fall deeply in love with her. On August 21st, after beating many odds linked to her early arrival, Willa May succumbed to her only weakness, her premature immune system. Her body could not fight off meningitis, but her heart was strong enough to hold on for many hours and give her family time to hold her, talk to her, and see her off. In her short 26-day life, she changed our lives forever. She made us a family and made us as her parents, realize our full potential and direction in life. We will never be the same without her and are so sorry that she never had the chance to come and see her home and meet her dogs Mathilda and Wellington and Cat Crunchie, but we will always, always cherish the 26 days we were together - 26 days of feeding her, changing her, holding her, talking to her, loving her, and learning from her. She will always be our daughter and we will always be her parents. She will be deeply missed by grandparents Donald Followes, Anne and Alfred Carr, and Gail Conrick; Aunt Emily Bush; Aunt Emma Followes and Uncle David Black; Aunt Claire Followes and Cousin Lincoln Followes; Uncle Michael Followes; Great Grandmother Geraldine Stannard; and her many great aunts and great uncles, step-aunts, step-uncles and step-cousins. Hamilton, Ruth, Mrs. March 7, 1932 - August 20, 2008, Mrs. Ruth Hamilton (nee: Halverson) passed away early on August 20, 2008 after a long and tiring illness. She was predeceased by her husband Russ in 2004. Survived by her daughters Marlene Hamilton, Rolene (Jeff) McKnight and son Alexander (Donna) Hamilton. She will be dearly missed by her grandchildren Katy, Andrew and Jaimie McKnight, Jordan, Jesse and Alexa Hamilton, Kristopher (Melanie) Harris and Kevin (Stephanie) Harris as well as treasured great grandchildren Peyton, Chase, Annette and Isabelle. Ruth was born in Port Arthur, Ontario on March 7th, and lived her life in the surrounding area. She and Russ shared 53 years of marriage and loved to vacation together whenever they could. She loved the Lord with all her heart and served in her church in many different capacities over the years. Ruth was a very talented lady and whether it was an apple pie, a centerpiece for your table or crocheting an afghan; she made it with love and joy. Her biggest passions were painting and her flower gardens. She was a wonderful Mother and Grandmother who loved to pass on her knowledge about nature and her love of God.
