BROOKS, Hilliard James 'Doc' - Doc Brooks died unexpectedly, following surgery, on Monday, November 3, 2008 at Toronto General Hospital in his 78th year. He was the beloved husband of Bernice “Bunnie“ (nee Stephens) of Arnstein and the much loved father of Dan Brooks (Brenda) and Tony Brooks (Penny), all of Port Loring. Gramps will be lovingly remembered by granddaughter Lena Brooks. He was predeceased by his parents Gertrude (Storie) and Robert Brooks. Doc was the dear brother of Arva McArthur (the late Doug) of Markham and was predeceased by his brothers Ovis Brooks (the late Mary Ellen) and Robert “Butch“ Brooks (Pat of Brampton). Doc was widely known as the owner/operator of H.J. Brooks Contracting of Port Loring. The Brooks family will receive visitors at St. Andrew's United Church, Port Loring on Thursday, November 6, 2008 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Masonic Tribute Service 6:45 pm. CYR, Guy George Sr. - It is with great sorrow that the family announces his passing on Sunday, November 2, 2008 at the Greater Niagara General Hospital with his family at his side. Guy fought a courageous battle with cancer for the past three years. Loving husband of 16 years to Diane (nee Kennedy). Survived by his children Jacques (Janet) of St. Catharines, André (Dympna) of Calgary, Jean (Twyla) of Ottawa, Jim (Carmie), Michelle and Guy Jr., all of Niagara Falls, and sister Michelle Baldwin of Ottawa. Son in law to Clara and the late James (2008) Kennedy of Niagara Falls. Predeceased by daughter Lisa (2002), parents Ova (1992), Jeannine (1990) and sister Marie (1969). Sadly missed by several generations including 14 grandchildren. Guy was an electrician for over 40 years, including 16 years at Thompson Products and Ontario Hydro. He was a member of I.B.E.W. in Ottawa and Local 303 and the Knights of Columbus. Guy's hobbies included playing cards, boating, fishing, scuba diving and spending endless hours puttering around his shop. Many thanks to hospital staff and C.C.A.C. nurse Jim for his care. As per Guy's request, cremation has taken place. NICHOLSON, Thomas George (19432008) - Passed away suddenly at home on November 2, 2008. Dearly beloved husband of Wynne, his wife of 37 years, father of Scott and Ty and his fiancée, Laura Thompson. Predeceased by his parents Thomas and Connie, George is survived in Northern Ireland by his brothers Jim (Margaret), Harry (Moira), Mervyn (Sharon) and his nieces Karen, Lynne (Peter), Gayle, Jane, Jenny and Jill. Much loved son-in-law of Evelyn and the late Harold Griffiths, brother-in-law of Rob (Dawn), Owen (Linda), Rodger (Barb) and uncle of Torrey, Braden (Charlotte), James, Brianne (Jeff), Adam and Garth. Born in Minterburn, Northern Ireland, George was a graduate of Dungannon Royal School and Queen's University, Belfast (B.A.). In 1966, he emigrated by tramp steamer to Canada where he earned his M.A. at Queen's University, Kingston, followed by his Ph.D. at Penn State University. Recently retired as Associate Director, Policy / Implementation after 30 years in the Niagara Region Planning Department. George spent much of the last several years developing the Greater Niagara Circle Route. An avid cyclist often seen in his red jacket riding the trails of Niagara, George recently cycled the Waterfront Trail from Niagara to the Quebec Border and had dreams of cycling across Canada. He will be missed by his many friends, former colleagues and fellow parishioners at St. Thomas Anglican Church. COUTURE, Reginald 2008-11-04 With his family at his side and the support of his friends, Reg Couture passed away peacefully on November 2nd, 2008 at St. Joseph‚s Hospice at the age of 71. GARRETT, Mildred Mabel 2008-11-04 Mrs. Mildred Mabel Garrett (nee: Kannegiesser) passed away unexpectedly at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre with her family at her side on Monday, November 3, 2008 at the age of 80 years. Mildred was born April 15, 1928 and was a life long resident of the Thunder Bay area. She loved to fish and was an avid bingo player and played with the Westfort Community Centre Cribbage Club. Her biggest love was her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mildred was predeceased by her husband Charles Kannegiesser in 1965, infant son Brian in 1948, daughter Charlene Coreau in 1989, and her second husband George Garrett in 2000. She is survived by her best friend and daughter Lenore Buzzi (husband Rick), son Paul Kannegiesser (wife Barbara) of London, Ontario, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, brother Richard Pike (wife Joyce) and many nieces and nephews. SMALL, Mariella 2008-11-04 It is with great sorrow that the family of Mariella Small announces her passing on November 2, 2008, after many years of poor health. Mariella was born in Kaukauna, Wisconsin to John and Katherine Verboort on May 23, 1921. She grew up and went to school in Kaukauna and Green Bay, Wisconsin. She later met and married Norman Small who was working for Great Lakes Paper at the time, and they moved to Fort William to begin their lives together. In her early years (50‘s) she sold Raleigh Products throughout the rural areas and loved travelling around the outlying areas and meeting people. She was a great conversationalist and loved talking to people. She later worked as a short-order cook at the Blue Swan Inn and Two Cities Motel. Mariella worked for many years at the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital as a Residential Counselor an enjoyed her work very much until ill health led to an early retirement. In her younger days, Mariella loved to dabble in the real estate market, buying and selling older homes. She was a hard worker and was in her glory when she was tearing houses apart, cleaning, painting, wallpapering and sanding. She loved going to open houses to see where the bargains were and as she always said, “to keep up with the market”. She used to love to go to the Herb Carroll Centre, 55 Plus Centre to play crib and other senior activities with her friends. Due to a stroke, she became hospitalized and spent seven years in Dawson Court Nursing Home. Thank you to all who visited her through the years and made her long days a little happier. She will be sadly missed by her children, grandchildren and her friends. She was a very kind and warm hearted mother and grandmother. She is survived by her children: Eric (Loy), Sheryl Cole, Iona (Warrren) Johnston, and Brian (Laurie); grandchildren: Kim Cole, Gregory Cole, Sloan, Wesley and Sasha Small, McKenzie, Lauren, and Dillon Small; and great grandson Dustin Uhlman. She is survived by sisters Cordell Bowers and Amoretta Kortz along with numerous nephews and nieces in and around Kaukauna. She was predeceased by her husband Norman, sister and brother-in-law Alvina and Albert (Curly) Jahnke, brother-in-law Omer (Cordell) Bowers, and brother-in-law Clifford Koertz. A special thank you to the staff of Dawson Court, 2 South, to Dr. Kroll and Dr. Dodick for the special care she received throughout the years.
