BUTT, Francis Gertrude (nee Eves) - Frances Gertrude of Pouch Cove, Newfoundland passed away peacefully at the L.A. Miller Centre on Thursday, October 30, 2008 at the age of 73. Left with fond and loving memories husband Lloyd; children: Mark (Darlene), Linda Barnes (Harrison), James (Maureen), Paul (Bethann) and Allen (Janet); 17 grandchildren, 3 great- grandchildren. Survived by brothers Joe Eves (Bernice), Bill Eves (Grace), Kingston and Paul Eves (Linda) of Newmarket. Predeceased by her parents Howard Eves and Gladys Shannon. A very special thank you to her dear friends in Pouch Cove for their support and to the staff of the Palliative Care Unit. Il laisse dans le deuil ses chères filles: Lise Brown (Dale) et Nicole Lalonde (François); ses 3 petites-filles adorées: Amelia, Geneviève et Anne-Marie; son frère Fernand et ses soeurs: Jeannine, Denise et Louise ainsi que plusieurs neveux et nièces. Aurèle a fait une illustre carrière au sein de Postes Canada et a été membre à vie de l'Institut canadien-français d'Ottawa. SMALL, Mariella 2008-11-04 It is with great sorrow that the family of Mariella Small announces her passing on November 2, 2008, after many years of poor health. Mariella was born in Kaukauna, Wisconsin to John and Katherine Verboort on May 23, 1921. She grew up and went to school in Kaukauna and Green Bay, Wisconsin. She later met and married Norman Small who was working for Great Lakes Paper at the time, and they moved to Fort William to begin their lives together. In her early years (50‘s) she sold Raleigh Products throughout the rural areas and loved travelling around the outlying areas and meeting people. She was a great conversationalist and loved talking to people. She later worked as a short-order cook at the Blue Swan Inn and Two Cities Motel. Mariella worked for many years at the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital as a Residential Counselor an enjoyed her work very much until ill health led to an early retirement. In her younger days, Mariella loved to dabble in the real estate market, buying and selling older homes. She was a hard worker and was in her glory when she was tearing houses apart, cleaning, painting, wallpapering and sanding. She loved going to open houses to see where the bargains were and as she always said, “to keep up with the market”. She used to love to go to the Herb Carroll Centre, 55 Plus Centre to play crib and other senior activities with her friends. Due to a stroke, she became hospitalized and spent seven years in Dawson Court Nursing Home. Thank you to all who visited her through the years and made her long days a little happier. She will be sadly missed by her children, grandchildren and her friends. She was a very kind and warm hearted mother and grandmother. She is survived by her children: Eric (Loy), Sheryl Cole, Iona (Warrren) Johnston, and Brian (Laurie); grandchildren: Kim Cole, Gregory Cole, Sloan, Wesley and Sasha Small, McKenzie, Lauren, and Dillon Small; and great grandson Dustin Uhlman. She is survived by sisters Cordell Bowers and Amoretta Kortz along with numerous nephews and nieces in and around Kaukauna. She was predeceased by her husband Norman, sister and brother-in-law Alvina and Albert (Curly) Jahnke, brother-in-law Omer (Cordell) Bowers, and brother-in-law Clifford Koertz. A special thank you to the staff of Dawson Court, 2 South, to Dr. Kroll and Dr. Dodick for the special care she received throughout the years. Funeral services for the late Mariella Small will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 6, 2008 at the Westfort Chapel, 420 West Gore Street at James with Mr. David Alander from the Jehovah‘s Witnesses officiating. SYKES, John (Jack) 2008-11-04 September 30th, 1931-October 31st, 2008 John (Jack) Sykes passed away at Lake of the Woods District Hospital on October 31st, 2008. Jack was born on September 30th, 1931 at St. Joseph‘s Hospital in Port Arthur (now Thunder Bay) Ontario. He was raised in Thunder Bay, worked as an electrician until 1963 when he started at Ontario Hydro in the Electrical Inspection Department, Thunder Bay. He was transferred to the Dryden Area in 1967 and to Kenora in 1970 to take over Supervision of the Electrical Inspection in the Kenora, Dryden, Fort Frances Areas. After 33 years of Electrical Inspection, he retired and he and Francine spent their retirement years enjoying the cottage in Sioux Narrows during the summer months and their condo in Clearwater, Florida during the winter months. Jack was a member of the Keewatin Masonic Lodge No. 417 rising to the position of Master. He also spent one term as District Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge AF AM of Canada in the Province of Ontario, Western District. In Florida he was active in the Canadian Club eventually becoming Club President. When he was younger Jack enjoyed downhill skiing and belonged to the Ski Patrol in Dryden and Kenora. Eventually he became President of Mount Evergreen Ski Club, Kenora. After a couple of hip operations Jack quit skiing and took up golfing, going as often as possible in both Sioux Narrows and Florida. When he was out he always called it exercise as he said he didn‘t play good enough to call it golf. Jack curled for a few winters in the Keewatin Seniors League until he decided the winters in the Kenora Area were too cold. Jack attended New Beginnings Word of Faith Church in Kenora when he was in Sioux Narrows and Faith Family Outreach Church in Clearwater when he was in Florida. Jack was predeceased by his loving wife Franziska (Francince) in 2004, his mother Theresa in 2003 and his father Fred in 1967. He leaves to cherish his memory his sons Christopher (Kathy), Michael (Laura), Munro Howard (Nancy), daughter Rajana (Luke) Anderson, grandchildren Kristine, Kayle, Rachael, Erika Dawn McKeen, Nicole, Jenna Sykes, and Eli, Jed Anderson, Michaela, and great grand-daughter Ashley. He also leaves behind his sister Gertrude (Peter) Chalat and good friend Yvette Deschaines. A heartfelt thanks to Ken & Melanie Patterson as well as Dr. Beveridge. A Memorial Service will be held at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre on Friday, November 7th, 2008 at 11:00am with a reception at Brown‘s to follow. THOMAS, Ruth Harriet Anne - Gone to be with God on October 31, 2008 age 84, at General & Marine Hospital, Collingwood Ontario after a happy 10 months spent living with her daughter and surrounding family in Creemore Ontario. Born in Peterborough to Benjamin Smith and Elva Smith (Braund), beloved wife of Murray Thomas (d.1998). Survived by children, Steven (Irene) Thomas of Creemore, Becky Eveland (Thomas) of Creemore/Sarnia, Joel (Joy) Thomas of Campbellford, Ben (Bev) Thomas of Caslan, Alberta and by ten grandchildren, Vincent, Devon, Rachel Thomas, Sarah, Jordan Eveland, Dax, Chi Thomas, Erin, Jonathon, Lindsay Thomas and by 5 great-grandchildren. Also survived by her only and beloved sister, Nola (Wray) Whitesell, her niece Jocelyn (Juris) and Mark (Mary-Ellen) all of Seattle Washington. Ruth spent her life (much of it in Sarnia, Ontario) in service to her family and the Salvation Army. She was a loving and generous person, often helping people in significant ways without fanfare and without being asked. Many of these people that she helped only learned about it long after the fact. Perhaps one of the greatest things about Ruth was her sense of humour. She kept her close-knit family laughing and will continue to, as they relive and treasure the memories. Ruth will also be greatly missed by her life-long friends and their families, Peg Braund, Miriam Given, Alice Smith (sister-in-law to Ruth and Nan to the kids) and by all the Thomas in-laws, nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dr. Mike Lewin and Dr. Geoff Moran of Collingwood Moran Medical Centre for their gentle and understanding care of Ruth during her last year. DIONNE, Jean-Paul 1927-2008 Le samedi 1er novembre 2008, à l'Hôpital Santa Cabrini de Montréal, s'est éteint à l'âge de 81 ans, monsieur Jean-Paul Dionne, époux de feu madame Suzanne Ares (2003). Après avoir grandi à Montréal dans le quartier Villeray, Jean-Paul fit ses études à la Polytechnique et obtint son diplôme d'ingénieur civil en 1951. Il fera toute sa carrière chez Lavalin (Lalonde, Valois, Lamarre, Valois et Associés) à titre d'associé et de consultant. Jean-Paul participera à de nombreux projets d'importance, au Canada et à l'étranger, dont il était très fier. Il partagera ensuite sa retraite entre Montréal, Miami et Chertsey, où il passera d'agréables moments avec les siens, jusqu'à tout dernièrement. Millie's pride and joy were always her children and grandchildren, whom she dearly cherished. All will miss Grandma's homemade Finnish buns and her famous homemade pizza which she loved to spring as a surprise for family dinners. Millie was as excellent a cook, housewife, wife, mother and grandmother as any family could have. She loved cottage life at French River.
