MANDZIUK, Mary (August 29, 1913 - October 31, 2008) - Peacefully passed away at the Brantford General Hospital after a long and wonderful life at age 95. Much loved mother of Diane Rintoul and her husband Ed (Brantford), Dan Mandziuk and his wife Karen (St. Catharines); loving and cherished grandmother of Kristen Mandziuk (Vancouver) and Mathew Mandziuk (St. Catharines); also survived by one brother, Nester Evanochko (Regina), many nieces, nephews and relatives in Ukraine. Predeceased by husband Dan (Delhi, 1966), 10 brothers and one sister. Mary was born in Ituna, Saskatchewan to Ukrainian parents, Steve Evanochko and Anna Doroshenko and lived many years in Delhi, Ontario. Mary was a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist, the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League and the Sunflower Seniors Club. We would like to thank all the dedicated staff at St. Joseph's Lifecare Centre for their wonderful and compassionate care. The family invites all friends to a Memorial Reception to honour her life on Thursday, November 6, 2008 at THORPE BROTHERS' FUNERAL HOME CARRIAGE HOUSE, 96 West Street, Brantford from 9:30 - 11 am. CHEVALIER, M. L'Abbé Charles-Omer - 1920 - 2008 À Saint-Hyacinthe, le 3 novembre 2008 est décédé à l'âge de 88 ans, après 61 ans de sacerdoce, M. l'Abbé Charles-Omer Chevalier. Né à Sorel, il fit ses études aux petit et grand Séminaires de Saint-Hyacinthe. Ordonné prêtre en 1947, il débute sa vie pastorale comme vicaire à l'Ange-Gardien, Mont Saint-Hilaire et paroisse Sacré-Coeur de Saint-Hyacinthe. Il cumule la charge d'aumônier des Syndicats Catholiques de Saint-Hyacinthe avec celle d'aumônier de l'Institut familial des Soeurs St-Joseph et une première cure à Saint-Bernard-de-Michaudville. Curé à Saint-Paul d'Abbottsford, il oeuvre comme aumônier diocésain de l'AFÉAS avant d'être le pasteur de la paroisse Sainte-Maria-Goretti de Beloeil pendant 12 ans. À sa retraite à Saint-Hyacinthe, il demeure en tenue de service comme vicaire dominical, assistant aumônier à l'Hôpital Honoré-Mercier et aumônier des Soeurs de la Charité. Outre ses confrères diocésains, il laisse dans le deuil, de nombreux neveux et nièces autres parents et amis. Il sera exposé, le mardi 4 novembre 2008 de 14 heures à 17 heures et de 19 heures à 21 heures au Séminaire de Saint-Hyacinthe, 650, rue Girouard est Saint-Hyacinthe. Beloved husband of Diana Grafton and loving father of Alexandra and Katie, cherished son of Irene and the late Konstantyn Kelebay. Dear brother to George (Christine) and uncle to Tania and Odessa. Gerry enjoyed many rewarding years as an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at McGill University. He was an active and committed member of the Ukrainian Community, for which he was recently presented with the Order of Ukraine. BRYANT, Norma Patricia Mom passed away peacefully at the age of 85, Saturday, November 1, 2008 at Newport Harbour Care Centre. Born in Ontario, she graduated from nursing school in Montreal in 1945 and served in the Canadian Army, where she met and married Capt. Don Bryant. Leaving the army she continued nursing until retirement in Alberta in the 1970's. Dearly missed by sons Gord (Ginny), Allen (Bernie), grandchildren Scott, Todd, Talitha and Joshua, and her sisters Joyce and Dorie. MOERSCH, Frank Joseph August 9, 1929 - November 1, 2008 Frank Joseph Moersch, beloved husband of Doreen of Beiseker, passed away peacefully at Chinook Hospice on November 1, 2008, after a courageous fight with cancer, at the age of 79 years. Born in St. Ingbert, Germany, where his family raised and trained German Shepherds. Frank came to Canada in 1952 and began his hotel career in Moose Jaw, SK. After the birth of his two daughters, the family moved to Calgary in 1967 and to Beiseker in 1976. He married his second wife Doreen in 1980. He loved animals of all kinds, especially birds and dogs. He is also survived by his daughters Joss and Sandra; grandchildren, Jordan, Matthew, Colby, Haley, Nicole, Danielle; great-grandchild Kaire; his brothers, Fred (Sally) and Albert; his sister Theresa (Gene). Frank was predeceased by his first wife Anna May and three brothers. The family would like to thank all the great people at Chinook Hospice for the care given to Frank. HEAP, Brian Frederick - Passed away suddenly, November 1, 2008, in his 68th year. Dear brother of Sherrill Heys, loving uncle of Jennifer Skelly (Jonathan), Grant Heys (Laura), and Kevin Heys (Terrie), and good friend of Katie. Predeceased by his parents Harry (Red) Heap (1990) and Carrie Heap (2003), brother Geoffrey David (1939), and brother-in-law Doug (Pug) Heys (1990). Brian has suffered throughout his lifetime with health problems, but worked tirelessly over the years fundraising for many causes, including Cystic Fibrosis, the Alzheimer Society, the Bell Homestead, Bisons Alumni activities, and Kinsmen Club activities, where he was an Honourary lifetime member. Brian was very active in the community, always an enthusiastic and vocal supporter of Brantford and the Downtown revitalization initiatives. An avid car enthusiast, Brian was a proud member of the Brantford Piston Pushers and the Brant Street Rods car clubs, and was well known for creating and organizing annual Car Shows in Brantford. Brian will be deeply missed by his family, his numerous friends, and the many individuals whose lives he touched in the community he served for so many years. The family would like to express sincerest thanks to the staff at St. Joe's Hospital in Hamilton, including the many nurses who cared for Brian over the years, and his specialists Dr. Pugsley and Dr. Brimble, as well to the wonderful team at the Dialysis unit of the Brantford General Hospital. HLADY, Jean Lydia (Baba Jean) 2008-11-04 Mrs. Jean Lydia Hlady age 82 years, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, November 1, 2008 at Versa Care Centre. Jean was born on December 14, 1925 to parents William and Sophie Kowalewich and resided in Westfort until her recent move to Versa Care. On August 30, 1947 she married Walter Hlady and they shared 36 wonderful years until his passing in 1983, and together they had 3 children. Jean was a great Wife, Mother, Baba and Double Baba. She was a devoted member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. Volodymyr‘s Ladies Auxiliary and was lovingly known by her family as “Jean, Jean the Perogie Queen”. She enjoyed doing crafts and spending time with her grandkids and great grandchildren. In her early years she spent many happy hours in the bush with her Mother picking blueberries and wild mushrooms, and enjoyed gardening and preserving her vegetables. Her working years found her employed at several Ladies Wear shops and she retired from Westfort Co-Op. Jean and Walter were long time residents of Spence Court where Jean spent many happy hours volunteering for the various activities of the complex. Jean was predeceased by her Daughter Anne, parents William and Sophie Kowalewich, Mother-in-law and Father-in-law Harry and Madeline Hlady and beloved Husband Walter, as well as numerous other relatives and friends. Left to mourn her passing are her boys, Richard (Shauna) and William (Janice). Grandchildren Scott (Terri-Lynn), Ryley (Karen), Kevin (Becca) Hlady, Jason (Kelly) Richard, Alisha (Paul) Beaudet, Aaron (Chelsea) Hordichuk and 10 Great Grandchildren as well as special cousins Jim and Mary Wasylenki of Atikokan and their children Rick and Debbie and their grandchildren. Jean-Paul participera à de nombreux projets d'importance, au Canada et à l'étranger, dont il était très fier. Il partagera ensuite sa retraite entre Montréal, Miami et Chertsey, où il passera d'agréables moments avec les siens, jusqu'à tout dernièrement. Il laisse dans le deuil ses enfants Sylvain (Rebeca Ramirez) et Claude (Martine Mounier), ses petits-enfants Francisco, Jonathan et Hugo, ses frères et soeurs Guy (Thérèse Fontaine), Roger (Marie Brunet), André (Lise Daniel), Françoise, Claire et Louise, ses beaux-frères et belles-soeurs Gertrude Asselin, Charles (Liliane Fortin) et Denis Ares, de même que plusieurs autres parents et amis(es). SYKES, John (Jack) 2008-11-04 September 30th, 1931-October 31st, 2008 John (Jack) Sykes passed away at Lake of the Woods District Hospital on October 31st, 2008. Jack was born on September 30th, 1931 at St. Joseph‘s Hospital in Port Arthur (now Thunder Bay) Ontario. He was raised in Thunder Bay, worked as an electrician until 1963 when he started at Ontario Hydro in the Electrical Inspection Department, Thunder Bay. He was transferred to the Dryden Area in 1967 and to Kenora in 1970 to take over Supervision of the Electrical Inspection in the Kenora, Dryden, Fort Frances Areas. After 33 years of Electrical Inspection, he retired and he and Francine spent their retirement years enjoying the cottage in Sioux Narrows during the summer months and their condo in Clearwater, Florida during the winter months. Jack was a member of the Keewatin Masonic Lodge No. 417 rising to the position of Master. He also spent one term as District Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge AF AM of Canada in the Province of Ontario, Western District. In Florida he was active in the Canadian Club eventually becoming Club President. When he was younger Jack enjoyed downhill skiing and belonged to the Ski Patrol in Dryden and Kenora. Eventually he became President of Mount Evergreen Ski Club, Kenora. After a couple of hip operations Jack quit skiing and took up golfing, going as often as possible in both Sioux Narrows and Florida. When he was out he always called it exercise as he said he didn‘t play good enough to call it golf. Jack curled for a few winters in the Keewatin Seniors League until he decided the winters in the Kenora Area were too cold. Jack attended New Beginnings Word of Faith Church in Kenora when he was in Sioux Narrows and Faith Family Outreach Church in Clearwater when he was in Florida. Jack was predeceased by his loving wife Franziska (Francince) in 2004, his mother Theresa in 2003 and his father Fred in 1967. He leaves to cherish his memory his sons Christopher (Kathy), Michael (Laura), Munro Howard (Nancy), daughter Rajana (Luke) Anderson, grandchildren Kristine, Kayle, Rachael, Erika Dawn McKeen, Nicole, Jenna Sykes, and Eli, Jed Anderson, Michaela, and great grand-daughter Ashley. He also leaves behind his sister Gertrude (Peter) Chalat and good friend Yvette Deschaines. A heartfelt thanks to Ken & Melanie Patterson as well as Dr. Beveridge. A Memorial Service will be held at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre on Friday, November 7th, 2008 at 11:00am with a reception at Brown‘s to follow. THOMAS, Ruth Harriet Anne - Gone to be with God on October 31, 2008 age 84, at General & Marine Hospital, Collingwood Ontario after a happy 10 months spent living with her daughter and surrounding family in Creemore Ontario. Born in Peterborough to Benjamin Smith and Elva Smith (Braund), beloved wife of Murray Thomas (d.1998). Survived by children, Steven (Irene) Thomas of Creemore, Becky Eveland (Thomas) of Creemore/Sarnia, Joel (Joy) Thomas of Campbellford, Ben (Bev) Thomas of Caslan, Alberta and by ten grandchildren, Vincent, Devon, Rachel Thomas, Sarah, Jordan Eveland, Dax, Chi Thomas, Erin, Jonathon, Lindsay Thomas and by 5 great-grandchildren. Also survived by her only and beloved sister, Nola (Wray) Whitesell, her niece Jocelyn (Juris) and Mark (Mary-Ellen) all of Seattle Washington. Ruth spent her life (much of it in Sarnia, Ontario) in service to her family and the Salvation Army. She was a loving and generous person, often helping people in significant ways without fanfare and without being asked. Many of these people that she helped only learned about it long after the fact. Perhaps one of the greatest things about Ruth was her sense of humour. She kept her close-knit family laughing and will continue to, as they relive and treasure the memories. Ruth will also be greatly missed by her life-long friends and their families, Peg Braund, Miriam Given, Alice Smith (sister-in-law to Ruth and Nan to the kids) and by all the Thomas in-laws, nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dr. Mike Lewin and Dr. Geoff Moran of Collingwood Moran Medical Centre for their gentle and understanding care of Ruth during her last year. Thanks also to Dr. Tara Gignac of Stone Tree Naturopathic Centre for her care and home attendance for Ruth. A special thank you to home nurses and care providers, Elaine Lightheart, Stacey Van Camp, Pam McLellan, Gertrude King, Sandra Brouillard. Survived by her son Colin and his wife Stasia; Frances was a proud grandmother to Terri-Lynn Ward, Corey May, and Stephanie Corbett and great-grandmother to Kim, Katie, Kelsey, Alaina, Michael, Tabatha, Gavin, and Liam.
