GEMMEL, Patricia Jay July 27, 1948 - October 18, 2008 It is with profound sadness that the family announces the passing of our beloved Pat Gemmel on Saturday, October 18. She leaves behind her new grandson Campbell, of whom she was extremely proud, her children Taylor, Curtis, his wife Kelly, and Dayna; her mother Helen Philley, sister Kim Obrigewitsch (Charlie) and their children Cameron and Jaylyn. Pat also leaves behind her life partner John Howard and his children David, wife Kerri, Nick, wife Renee and a large extended family and numerous friends. She is predeceased by her father Ray Philley of Regina, SK. Pat grew up in Regina, where she met and married Bob Gemmel. They moved to Calgary in the seventies and raised their three beautiful children. Pat spent the last twenty-two years as the high school secretary at Calgary Academy where she touched the lives of countless students and staff, especially Lynn Morin, her best friend. She was a second mother to many of her children's friends, cousins, and numerous family pets. The family wishes to express a special thank you to the Bogard family for their support during this difficult time. Pat was the glue that held her family together. We will all remember her beautiful laugh, sense of humour, and her "special presents" for the people who shared her life. Pat had the enviable gift of making friends with everyone she met. WRANGLES, George Edward. 1920-2008. Passed away peacefully at the Lakeshore General Hospital on October 20, 2008 at the age of eighty-eight. Beloved husband of the late Nora Bowes. Loving father of Carole (Joseph Parillo). Cherished grandfather of Vincent (Christiane), George and Brian. George will be deeply missed by his family and friends as well as his two dogs Maggie and Brandy. George was a desert rat (the eighth army WWII), he worked at the Royal Bank (Place Ville-Marie) and was a great sponsor of the SPCA. BURNS, Frances "Fran" (Kerr) July 17, 1932 - Oct. 20, 2008 Long Live the "Queen of Full House" Peacefully at Ottawa General Hospital after a battle with heart and respiratory failure. Fran leaves a saddened life partner and best friend of the last twenty-six years, Kealey Cummings. She was the proud and loving mother of Vicki Burns (husband - Karl Irvine) of Toronto with grandchildren Ben and Hannah, and Tim Burns (wife - Bernice Vanderlaan) of Mississauga, with granddaughter Ruby Lucille. Fran also continued a good friendship with her former husband Tony Burns of Ottawa. Fran was a well known singer and entertainer going back over fifty years, appearing as a star of CBC TV's "Western Five", and later being crowned as the "Queen of Full House" to her many local friends and fans. Fran also enjoyed a successful career as a real estate agent and served on the Ottawa Real Estate Board of Directors. The daughter of Frank Kerr and Gladys Larmondra, Fran leaves behind her three beloved brothers Charlie, Orville (wife Yvonne), and Gilbert "Gib" Kerr, and many dearly remembered nieces and nephews. Fran was a member and had many friends at Montgomery Branch 351 R.C.L. and up until recent years Fran often enjoyed golfing in Florida, and at Highlands Golf Course in Ottawa. The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at both The Glebe and Garry Armstrong Seniors Residences, and the ICU team at Ottawa General Hospital for their care and dedication. OBITUARY KEITH LAWRENCE McDONALD Passed away peacefully and unexpectedly at the Royal Victoria Hospital on Saturday, October 18, 2008, aged seventy-nine years. Beloved husband of the late Joan Blake. Beloved spouse of Barbara Good. Loving father of Blake, Judy (Darren). Cherished grandfather of Lauren. Survived by his brothers Campbell (late Sue), and Andrew (Irene). Predeceased by his brothers Barry (Terry) and Kenneth. Keith was born in Granby, Quebec to Gerald and Gertrude McDonald. Came to Montreal and worked with Bell Canada, eventually started his own successful advertising agency. Keith was an avid cyclist, skier, golfer and world traveler. He was a very generous man. CUSHEN, Michael Thomas. Died peacefully on October 18, 2008. He faced cancer with courage and determination. Dearest husband and best friend of Dayle Anderson and proud and loving father of Sean (Chantal) and Tim (Queenie). Grandfather of sweet little Madolyn. Michael was the dear son of Florence Stevens and the late Thomas and Mary Cushen and the son-in-law of Esther Anderson. He is survived by his sister, Wendy Cushen, and his brothers Laird Stevens and Cliff Stevens. Mike will be remembered fondly by his extended family of relatives and by his close friends. Mike enjoyed his long career as a West Island realtor working with clients and colleagues. We appreciate the compassionate and excellent care provided by the Montreal General's Dr. Charlebois, Dr. Vuong, Dr. Alcindor and their complete teams and to Moliny of the CLSC. BATES, Russell 2008-10-21 BATES Mr. Russell M. Bates, age 85 a resident of Pinewood Court, passed away on Saturday October 18, 2008. Russell was born in Fort William, 1923 to Harry and Alma Bates. In 1942, he enlisted in the Army in the 13th Division, Light Artillery. He was stationed on the West Coast, and was discharged in 1946. In 1947, Russell married Vivian Gammond, and many good years were enjoyed by family and friends at Stewart Lake. He was employed as a Salesman all his adult life, and after working at Lakehead Wholesalers for 13 years, he retired in 1986. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #6, and he was Past President of the A.C.T. - U.C.T. Commerical Travellers. Russell is survivied by his wife Vivian and 3 children: Bill (Jessie) of Blackfalds, Alberta. Ken (Margaret) of Thunder Bay and their 4 children - David, Robbie, Amanda and Megan. Barbara Green (Bruce) of Eden Prairie, MN. and their son, William. Russell was pre-deceased by his parents and brother Emerson who passed away in June, 1967. Our sincere thanks to the Humming Bird Staff at Pinewood Court for their compassionate care shown to Russell. LONGSTAFFE, Jean - Born in Mimico, Jean moved as an infant to Barrie with her family and lived there for most of her life. In 1947 she married George Longstaffe at Collier Street United Church. They lived in Toronto for a short time and then moved back to Barrie when George became Secretary/Treasurer of the Barrie Public School Board. Jean worked for the Simcoe Medical Group, took time out to raise her family, then retired in 1990. Predeceased by George in 1988, Jean died in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Barrie on Sunday, October 5th, 2008. She was 82 years of age. Missed by children, David, Jane (Sarah) and Peter (Jackie). Loving aunt of Nancy Clark (Leighton) and Peggy Pridham, grandmother of Nevenka, Bronwen and Brayden. Missed by her great nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents Rebecca (Watts) and Charles Pickering and her sisters, Nellie Hall and Evelyn Pickering. Di GIOSEFFO, Giuseppe Luigi, June 12, 1917 - Oct. 20, 2008. It is with great sadness that the family of Giuseppe Joe Di Gioseffo announce the death of a much loved husband, father, nonno, brother-in- law, and uncle. Giuseppe was born in Buia, Udine, Italy to Augusto and Assunta (nee Plos) Di Gioseffo (predeceased). He was the beloved step-son of Giovanna (nee Coletti), and brother of Miro, Augusta, Romana, Artura, Egle, and Vittorio, (all predeceased). He met his wife of 59 years in Italy and came to Canada with a young family in 1954. With his wife Giuseppina, he provided a strong foundation for his children and passed on to them the values of hard work, living simply, and putting family above everything else. Like his namesake, St. Joseph, Joe earned a living working with his hands as a labourer with many companies. He last worked as a caretaker for the Sudbury School board until retirement age. In healthier years, he enjoyed his garden, winemakeing, hunting, fishing and most of all cooking the bounty of his labour. He was proud to be an Alpini and was also a member of the Fogolar Furlan. Sadly missed but never forgotten by his wife Giuseppina, his 2 children Augustine, and Amelia de Blacam, Loretta and Killian whom he loved as though they were his very own, grandchildren Joseph, and Alexandra Di Gioseffo and sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, nieces and nephews in Canada, Italy, and Switzerland, Mandi Zeff. The family would like to thank the many people who looked after Joe during his lengthy stay at the Sudbury Regional Hospital, particulary, Dr. Anthony Graham and his team who enabled him to make such progress after his stroke, Dr. Dhatt, and Dr. Lynch and the many compassionate and dedicated nurses, team members and volunteers of the Complex Continuing Care Unit. KOSIOR, Paul It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Paul Kosior at the age of 63 on October 18, 2008 after a valiant battle with cancer. Paul was born on August 4, 1945 in Turner Valley, Alberta. He is survived by his mother Minnie, sister Eileen, brothers John (Janet) and Jim (Bev), nieces and nephews Jeremy, Jayme, Rob, Lisa, David, Jenny, Catherine and Sofia. Paul immensely enjoyed his special aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his father Karl in 1988. Paul had a beautiful mind and those who were fortunate enough to know him will forever be touched in a profound way. Paul always faced difficult situations with a strong sense of hope and faith. He chose to look at life with an optimistic attitude, despite facing several serious health problems. His heart always remained kind and thoughtful and he was forever showing concern for everyone else's welfare. All enjoyed his sense of humour and intelligent thought. He was beautiful in every way - gentle and gracious to the end. Paul - so loving and dearly loved - you are in our hearts forever. The family would like to thank everyone for your cards, flowers, and offers of help. Your many kind words were deeply appreciated and will always be remembered. ZALEWSKI, Stanislawa (Stacey) (nee Kuriata) September 21, 1935 - October 20, 2008 Stanislawa (Stacey) Zalewski of Calgary, passed away peacefully and surrounded by her family, on Monday, October 20, 2008 at the age of 73 years. Stacey was born in Potasnia, Poland. She met her husband John Zalewski in 1960, after which they immigrated to Uranium City, SK, where they settled down and had four children, Rick, Sophie (Adrian), Waldy (Tammy), and Jane. In 1975, the family made the move to Calgary. Stacey was also blessed with six grandchildren, Nicholas, David, Mark, Thomas, Jake, and Ethan. She is also survived by her sister Sophie (Peter) and their children Adam (Catherine) Olivia and Christopher and friend Dana. Stacey spent and enjoyed many hours tending to her gardens. She was also an exceptional cook, especially when preparing meals of her traditional food. She will always be remembered for her marinated lamb (baran). Stacey will be lovingly remembered for her sense of humour and her easy nature in making many good friends. She will also be remembered for always putting the needs of others before her own. She was predeceased by her husband John in 1984. She then met Al Cesonis, her devoted companion who predeceased her in July 2008. We will always keep you close to our hearts, until we meet again. PETRYNA, William - In Loving memory of William “Bill“ Petryna, who passed away peacefully on October 20th, 2008 in the kind attention of Extendicare (Falconbridge) Alzheimers Unit. Born to Peter and Nellie (nee Woloschuk) Petryna both predeceased of Coniston, on April 6, 1926, he was in his 83rd year. Bill was a devoted and loving husband of Elvi Petryna (nee Johnson) these past 55 year. Bill quietly proud of his offspring: Brenda, of Sudbury and her children Sara, Jay and Brian (father Michael Hennessy), Greg of Sudbury and his children Stephen, Heather and Christopher (mother Lorrie Petryna - nee Sarmatiuk), and Cathy of Stratford and her children Peter, Victoria, Tiffany, and Timothy (father Kevin Clay). Predeceased by his siblings, Mary Rukhyski, Ann Stranger, Lena Tataryn and Alex. Sadly missed by nieces and nephews. Bill was a tireless worker, a careful craftsman, and a tenacious competitor. These attributes served him well in his work and his play. His baseball pitching prowess as a young man earned him a tryout in the big leagues, and also a job opportunity at Inco. There he learned his trade as a electrician, which allowed him to establish his own successful company, in 1965, Petryna Electric Ltd. He continued his work into his 70's enjoying retirement time at Treasure Island in Florida in the cold season and the West Arm of Nipissing camp in the warm season. Bill's involvement in sports went well beyond his baseball playing days. He was a sponsor and coach of a number of successful youth hockey teams, and in later years he was an enthusiastic golfer. His sporting interests were reflected in the athletic accomplishments of his children and grandchildren, of whom he was a loyal, and at times gently critical fan. Of proud Ukrainian heritage, Bill was a man of faith and an active supporter of Catholic parishes in Coniston, Sudbury, and in Florida.
