BEATON, Mary Anne - Mary Anne Beaton began the next chapter of her journey at 5:56 a.m., on October 14th, 2008. Mary Anne was born in Toronto on July 12, 1939, to Elsie (nee Fitzgerald) and James Baye. She was predeceased in 1997 by her husband, Raymond Coady Beaton, whom she adored. She will be sadly missed by daughters Jessica Beaton of North Bay, and Katherine Beaton and husband Tom Smalbeck of Kingston. She shared a deep and joyful bond with her only grandchild Coady James Alexander Beaton of North Bay. She is survived by her sister Joyce Hawke of Orillia, her brother MIchael Baye of British Columbia, god-daughter Erin Baye of British Columbia, as well as many nephews and nieces. At Mary Anne's request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A graveside service will be held Friday, October 17 at 10:30 a.m., at Saint Mary's Cemetery. Felix was a Roman Catholic and a member of Christ the King Church and a former member of Holy Trinity Church. He was a devoted and caring father and grandfather teaching his family the importance of respect, responsibility and a great work ethic. His interests included maintaining his home, gardening, wine making, creating beautiful furniture, opera and music in general. LEON CARL KIELCZEWSKI After a lengthy illness, Leon Carl Kielczewski, 57, passed away at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008 with family by his side. Leon was born to Paul and Margaret on May 16,1951 in Fort Frances, Ont. He lived most of his life there, but travelled often to Edmonton, Alta. to visit with family and friends. Leon was an avid outdoorsmen and enjoyed the time he spent with family, friends, and by himself at Kettle Falls and on Rainy Lake. At the age of 18, Leon enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps and served on the USS Okinawa. Leon is survived by his two children, Brandi and David; and grandchildren. He also is survived by brothers and sisters, Harvey (Barb), Pat (Vera), Keith (Betty), Gail (Bill Shields), Ray (Dee), Laurie (Rick Sutherland), Bonnie (Bernie Limoges) Deder, and Shawn; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Leon was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Margaret; brother, Kevin; sister and brother-in-law, Barb and Terry Johnston; aunt, Rita; and uncles, Allan and Alton. BARKOVICH, Joseph Barkovich Sr. – Our family mourns the loss and rejoices in the new life of our husband, father, father-in- law and grandfather, Joseph (Joe) Peter Barkovich who died at the Niagara Health System's Welland Hospital site, Tuesday, Oct. 14 in his 85th year. Born in Draganic, Croatia on April 18, 1924, he was a son to Ignace and Rose Barkovich, and younger brother to John. Joe came to Welland with his mother and brother in the fall of 1929 from Croatia, to meet their husband and father who had arrived earlier. Joe attended Maple Leaf Public School and Welland High and Vocational School. At WHVS, Joe played high school basketball and football. He was a member of the Welland High basketball team which honored the school by winning Group, District and Central Ontario Secondary School Association championships in 1940-41 and also a member of Joe Miller's King Street Mission Mic Macs, winner of the Church Intermediate “A” Ontario Championship in 1942. An accomplished stand-up bass player, Joe was a member of the Croatian tamburitza orchestra, Karlovac, founded by his brother. The musicians were well known in the Welland area during the 1950s, entertaining at weddings, banquets and dances. During the Second World War, he served 33 months in the Canadian Army, including 13 months overseas, stationed in England. Joe married Mary Theresa Canjar on July 6, 1946 in St. Mary's Church, Welland. For many years, they owned the B and B Restaurant in Sherkston and later Joseph's Seafood Galley in Welland. Joe was also a 25-year employee of Plymouth Cordage in Welland. In younger years, he was an avid fisherman and five-pin bowler. He was a long-time fan of the Toronto Blue Jays and enjoyed watching the Jays on television with Mary at his side. Proud of his Croatian heritage, he was a member of the Croatian National Home, Welland; Croatian Fraternal Union, Lodge 617, Welland; Croatian Seniors, Welland; St. Anthony of Padova Croatian Catholic parish, Welland; and Knights of Columbus at the parish. Joe was predeceased by his father Ignace, on Nov. 22, 1975; mother Rose, March 7, 1989; and brother and sister-in-law John and Mary, Aug. 20, 1967. Joe is survived by his wife Mary; one son Joe Jr., (Bernadette) of Welland and one daughter Carol (Alex Petutin) of Niagara Falls. Joe was the much loved, special Deda to five grandchildren: Ryan Evans (Julie), of Welland, Erin Evans (Blake Smith) of Niagara Falls, Brendan Evans (Malinna Munro) of Welland and Matt and Melissa Barkovich of Welland. Also surviving is a nephew, John Barkovich of London, Ont., a niece, Diane Robinson and a cousin, George Yurcich of Hamilton. Joe is resting at J.J. Patterson & Sons Funeral Residence 19 Young Street, Welland where visitation will be held Wednesday 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Thursday 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Parish prayers (Croatian) will be said at the funeral residence Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday, Oct. 17 at noon at St. Anthony of Padova Croatian Catholic Parish, 360 River Rd., Welland.
