MORINELLO, Vincenzo - With heartfelt sadness, the Morinello family announces the passing of a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend on Tuesday, October 14th, 2008, in his 75th year. Beloved husband of Maria (nee Salvia) for 46 years. Dear loving father and teacher of Joseph and his wife Linda; Vincent and his wife Louise. Cherished and loving nonno of Christina and Victoria, all of Niagara Falls. Survived by sisters-in-law Grace Morinello of California, Carmela Morinello of Niagara Falls, and Enza and the late Salvatore Martino of Italy. Dear brother-in-law Philip (Maria) Salvia of Buffalo NY. Vincenzo will be missed by many nephews, nieces and cousins. He is predeceased by his brothers Angelo, Carmelo and Giuseppe. Vincenzo was a member of Club Italia and will be missed by the many friends he had there. He dedicated his life to his family and will be remembered for his teachings, stories and love of life. SMITH, Cecil Walter - After a courageous battle, Cecil passed away at the Douglas Memorial Hospital on Monday October 13th in his 84th year. Loving husband of Joan. CULP, Bruce Taylor - Passed away peacefully on Tuesday October 14, 2008 at Niagara Arms Hotel & Residence in his 87th year. Beloved husband of the late Dorothy (1991). ELLIS, Marguerite - It is with profound sadness and an overwhelming sense of loss that we announce her passing on Tuesday, October 14, 2008 in her 83rd year. FLEMING, Sister Angela (Sr. Mary Gregory) - Of the Community of the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Diocese of London died peacefully on Thanksgiving Day, October 13, 2008 at the residence of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Sister was in her 85th year and her 62nd year of religious life. Lovingly remembered by her sister, Agnes Kuntz of Chepstowe, Ontario and her many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents Patrick Fleming and Mary McIntyre, her sisters Margaret (Sister Laurentia OSU), Patricia Berdenski, Veronica (Sister Ethelreda, OSU) brothers Father Hugh, Thomas and Gregory. In 1946, Sister graduated from St. Joseph' Hospital School of Nursing, and entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1947. Sister began her ministry in health care, nursing the sick at St. Joseph's Hospital, London. After receiving a nursing teaching certificate in 1951, she was appointed Director of Nursing at St. Joseph's Hospital, Chatham from 1955-1969 after which she became the Nursing Supervisor for St. Joseph's Hospital London from 1971-1979. In 1980, Sister Angela was appointed Assistant Executive Director at St. Joseph's Hospital, London. From 1982-1985 she was Health Coordinator. From 1985-1990, Sister Angela continued to use her skills as pastoral assistant at St. Joseph's Parish, London. Always interested in developing her talents, she registered for Art Therapy studies at the University of Western Ontario and graduated in 1995. In a spirit of adventure, she relocated to the Northwest Territories in 1995 and spent six years counselling children through art therapy. In 2001, Sister returned to London and continued private counselling. Sister Angela will be remembered by her religious Sisters, her family and friends for her gentleness of manner, her sense of humour, her deep appreciation of beauty. She was a gardener of the spirit. The Community is grateful to the nursing staff for their attentive care of Sister Angela. All services for Sister will be held at the residence of the Sisters of St. Joseph, 485 Windermere Rd. BARKOVICH, Joseph Barkovich Sr. – Our family mourns the loss and rejoices in the new life of our husband, father, father-in- law and grandfather, Joseph (Joe) Peter Barkovich who died at the Niagara Health System's Welland Hospital site, Tuesday, Oct. 14 in his 85th year. Born in Draganic, Croatia on April 18, 1924, he was a son to Ignace and Rose Barkovich, and younger brother to John. Joe came to Welland with his mother and brother in the fall of 1929 from Croatia, to meet their husband and father who had arrived earlier. Joe attended Maple Leaf Public School and Welland High and Vocational School. At WHVS, Joe played high school basketball and football. He was a member of the Welland High basketball team which honored the school by winning Group, District and Central Ontario Secondary School Association championships in 1940-41 and also a member of Joe Miller's King Street Mission Mic Macs, winner of the Church Intermediate “A” Ontario Championship in 1942. An accomplished stand-up bass player, Joe was a member of the Croatian tamburitza orchestra, Karlovac, founded by his brother. The musicians were well known in the Welland area during the 1950s, entertaining at weddings, banquets and dances. During the Second World War, he served 33 months in the Canadian Army, including 13 months overseas, stationed in England. Joe married Mary Theresa Canjar on July 6, 1946 in St. Mary's Church, Welland. For many years, they owned the B and B Restaurant in Sherkston and later Joseph's Seafood Galley in Welland. Joe was also a 25-year employee of Plymouth Cordage in Welland. In younger years, he was an avid fisherman and five-pin bowler. He was a long-time fan of the Toronto Blue Jays and enjoyed watching the Jays on television with Mary at his side. Proud of his Croatian heritage, he was a member of the Croatian National Home, Welland; Croatian Fraternal Union, Lodge 617, Welland; Croatian Seniors, Welland; St. Anthony of Padova Croatian Catholic parish, Welland; and Knights of Columbus at the parish. Joe was predeceased by his father Ignace, on Nov. 22, 1975; mother Rose, March 7, 1989; and brother and sister-in-law John and Mary, Aug. 20, 1967. Joe is survived by his wife Mary; one son Joe Jr., (Bernadette) of Welland and one daughter Carol (Alex Petutin) of Niagara Falls. Joe was the much loved, special Deda to five grandchildren: Ryan Evans (Julie), of Welland, Erin Evans (Blake Smith) of Niagara Falls, Brendan Evans (Malinna Munro) of Welland and Matt and Melissa Barkovich of Welland. Also surviving is a nephew, John Barkovich of London, Ont., a niece, Diane Robinson and a cousin, George Yurcich of Hamilton. Joe is resting at J.J. Patterson & Sons Funeral Residence 19 Young Street, Welland where visitation will be held Wednesday 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Thursday 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Parish prayers (Croatian) will be said at the funeral residence Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday, Oct. 17 at noon at St. Anthony of Padova Croatian Catholic Parish, 360 River Rd., Welland. LAMKE, Sonja Seija 2008-10-15 Mrs. Sonja Seija Lamke, aged 67 years, resident of Thunder Bay passed away at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on Monday, October 13, 2008 with her family at her side. She was born May 8, 1941 in Vasa, Finland and she was educated in Swedish schools. She came to Canada with her parents in 1958. Sonja was employed at Scandinavian Home and as a seamstress at Coopers Ladies Wear. She is survived by her husband Robert Lamke, daughter Della Priebe (Mike) of Olympia, Washington; sons Eric (Janet) of CFB Fort Saskatchewan, Lyle (Eva), Lance (Katherine) and Rob (Liz); grandchildren Justin, Meaghan, Rachel and Devon; brother Richard (Ann-britt), Malin and Johan of Oxelsund, Sweden and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Sonja was predeceased by her parents Uno and Elna Virta and in-laws Art and Annie Lamke. Sonja’s interests revolved around her family. She especially enjoyed watching her grandchildren and was even present at hockey games and other sporting events. She was an avid gardener, homemaker and she loved to crochet and sew. Funeral services for Mrs. Sonja Lamke will be held on Friday, October 17, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at Jenkens Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre. Memorial donations to the Northern Cancer Research Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
