GOETZ, Elmer Theodore March 22, 1928 - September 25,2008 Elmer Goetz, beloved husband of Clare Goetz of Calgary, passed away on September 25, 2008 at the age of 80 years. Elmer was born on March 22, 1928 in Ponoka, AB, and married Clare Baur in 1961. Elmer worked with Canadian Superior Oil for many years as an accountant. He was very active within his community, and was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Knights of Columbus Council 1186 and St. Luke's Catholic Church. Elmer is survived by his loving wife, Clare of forty-seven years. Brothers and sisters, Norman and Alvin (Janet), Doris Goetz, Anita Myler, Ruth (Vince) Morrison, Mary (Leo) Bunz and Rita (John) Faubert; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Hoffman, Tony Baur, Herman (Frieda) Baur, Mildred Goetz and Jean Goetz, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his daughter, Karen in September 1993; parents, Zeno and Loretta Goetz; and four brothers, Norbert, Ralph, Leonard and Clarence. SMITH, Janet (Jean) Kate (nee Hampton) June 26, 1913 - September 23, 2008 Janet (Jean) Kate (nee Hampton) Smith departed life on September 23, 2008 at age 95. In June 1913, Jean was born in the home of the local doctor of Windthorst, Saskatchewan. She grew up on a homestead farm in the Graytown area and graduated as an RN in 1939 from Regina General Hospital. Married to James Lorne (J.L.) in October 1941, they moved to Calgary in 1944. She was predeceased by J.L. in 1966, and later by her sisters Gladys Hofas and Marjorie Hogg, brother Ross Hampton and nephew Garry Hogg. Jean is survived by her daughters Peggy Lathwell of Toronto (Mike Sherman, Willoughby, OH) and Betty Jensen (Bob) of Calgary; grandchildren Catherine Lathwell (Alireza Baibordi) of Toronto, Jody Lathwell (Jim Richards) of Euclid, OH, Dave Jensen (Marcie) of Calgary, and Diane Burnett (Brad) of Prince Rupert, BC; great-grandchildren Colin and Mitchell Lathwell, Laura Jensen and Isla Kate Burnett; niece-in-law Ilene Hogg, nephews Syd Hampton, Greg Hampton (Robyn) and Roger Hofas and families. Jean was very community-minded and always willing to give a helpful hand. She was a long-time member of St. Matthew's United Church and lived in Sarcee Meadows Housing Co-operative for twenty-five years where she was an active volunteer. She enjoyed playing bridge and participating in family activities. At age ninety-one, when her health started to decline, Jean resided in Sarcee Hospice for eight months in 2006, and then moved to assisted living at Wentworth Manor - the Court where she lived for two years. She was recently moved to the Dr. Vernon Fanning Centre where she passed away when her health deteriorated rapidly. Jean always did her best. She had special talent for growing beautiful house plants and her garden. She had an impeccable sense of style. We will all remember her cheerful disposition and bright smile. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made directly to St. Matthew's United Church or to the charity of the donor's choice. MEHTA, Subhash Chander - April 12, 1942 – September 24, 2008 - Mr. Mehta had been a man of faith and grit. He accepted all challenges in his life time with wisdom, grace and commitment. He won confidence and love from his family members, friends and colleagues. His sincere suggestions and advice were followed with utmost belief. On a professional front, he was rated as an outstanding innovator. His words were authority and were followed blindly by his co-professionals. Such souls appear on stage very rarely. He died peacefully at the Ottawa General Hospital surrounded by his family members after a courageous battle with a disease responsible for his end. He was born in Pathankot, India and moved to Canada in 1970. He did his B.A. from Punjab University, a B.Lib. at Punjab University, Chandigarh, a Masters in Political Science at Kathmandu University, Nepal and a Masters in Library Science at the University of Western Ontario, Canada. He had a distinguished career as Chief Librarian at the Pembroke Public Library from 1970 until 2002 and then at the Renfrew Public Library from 2003 until May 2008. He was a loving husband to Chander Prabha and a devoted father to Avnish and Rahul. He will be dearly missed by his daughters-in-law Nisha (nee D'Mello) and Sangeeta (nee Shenoy) and his granddaughters Diya Jyoti and Anika Prabha. His life revolved around his family. He will be affectionately missed by his siblings (their spouses and their children). Brothers : Sushil (Mridul, Chetna, Sumedha); Bharmaniam Bhaskar (Uma, VijayBharti, Ashish, Vagish); Chakarvarti Ashok (Prabha, Puneet, Rohitash); Yogish (Rashmi, Kushal, Ketan) and Rajnish (Monica, Sonal, Sulabh). Sisters : Padma (Om Prakash, Anuradha, Dev Prakash, Chandershekhar, Vinay); Kanta (Om Dutt, Umesh, Upma); Sudesh (Krishan Dev, Jaidev, Monika, Sonika) and Shashi (Rajinder, Ranjana, Deepak). He also loved his late father-in-law Sh. Pyare Lal Palli and his mother-in-law Savitri Rani. Brothers-in- law : Balraj (Kanta), Sham (Shivi, Nitan, Nidhi, Nitesh); Satish (Sneh, Sonal, Ashish, Anuj) and Vinod (Bela, Aditi, Anshul). Sisters-in-law : Uma (Ved Prakash, Paramod, Shashi, Jai Prakash) and Brij Mohini (late Ravinder, Sandeep, Suruchi). He is joining in heaven his late father Pandit Ram Chander Shastri, mother Ratni Devi (nee Bhardwaj), his Chachaji Mukund Lal and Chachiji Shakuntala Devi and his eldest brother Raghuvansh, sister Pushpa and sisters-in-law, Satya Bhama and Puran Devi. Few people had friends to the extent he had. To mention them all would take pages. ‘Once a friend, always a friend' was his mantra. Please remember he loved you with all his heart. Thank-you for all the support and prayers over the past few weeks. A special thanks to Dr. Edward Fitzgibbon, Cathe, Dr. Firas Al-Qadhi and the entire staff on the 5th floor Oncology Ward at the Ottawa General Hospital for their superb care. A cremation was held on September 25, 2008. A prayer service will be held from 11:00 to 1:00 followed by an open house from 1:00-3:00 at the family home, 125 Owens St., Pembroke, on October 4, 2008. BLACK, John Francis - February 3, 1928 - September 24, 2008 - John passed away after a brief illness at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, B.C. He is survived by his wife Sylvia of fifty-seven years and his son Michael, daughter-in-law Elizabeth (Patterson), Rotterdam Holland, daughter Carole Wedholm, son-in-law Sven, Nanaimo, B.C., grandchildren Katie and Sarah, Phoenix Arizona, Brock (Erika) Osoyoos, B.C., Brandon, Vancouver, B.C. and Erik (Jenny), Tumbler Ridge, B.C. John served in the British RAF from 1946 to 1952 and the Canadian Army Provost Corp until 1979 when he retired and was Manager of the Kingston Humane Society for ten years. In 1990, John and Sylvia moved to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. he enjoyed RVing with their motor home and walking around Colliery Dam with his two greyhounds Daisy and Lucy and the cat Sylvester always a few steps behind. John will be sadly missed by his family and many friends he made over the years. No Funeral or Memorial Service will be held, as this was his wish. CASSELMAN, Edward - Passed away unexpectedly but peacefully in Ottawa, after attending a hockey game. Doing what he loved to do in the company of his nephews Wayne Hamelin and Derek Schaaf. He was a devoted and loving husband for 48 years to Louise Anna Kilmury. He was a proud, loving and supportive father to Jack (Charlene) and Teresa (Kim) White. A kind fun-loving Grandpa to Ryan, Ashley, Benjamin, Nicholas and Jennifer. He was predeceased by his loving parents George and Agnes Casselman and his brother Robert Casselman. Also his brothers-in-law John Karasiuk and Jack McCune. He is survived by his much loved sisters Jean (Bill) Hamelin, Dorothy Karasiuk, Geraldine (Bill) Nugent, Viola McCune, Pearl Schaaf and sister-in-law Marilyn Casselman, as well as several nieces and nephews. Ed was a friendly, loving man who loved being with people. He greeted everyone with a warm, beautiful smile and said hello to everyone he met. MANIO, Ruben (Benjie). 1959 - 2008. On Thursday, September 25, 2008, at the age of forty-nine, Benjie suddenly passed away. He was the beloved husband of twenty-six years of Martha Lalic, the proud father of Michael and Marc. He was also a cherished son, brother, uncle and friend to those left behind.
