ASHLEY, “Ed“ Edwin - WWII Veteran - Peacefully with his family by his side at John Joseph Place in Owen Sound on Sunday August 10, 2008. In his 85th year, H. Edwin Ashley, beloved husband of his late wife Joyce Ashley (nee Taylor). Loving father of Brian Ashley and his wife Anne Richter of Watertown N.Y., Louise and her husband Paul McMann of Owen Sound, and Robert Ashley of Brampton. Dear grandfather of Ryan and his partner Nadia, Richelle and her partner Shawn. Great grandfather of Lily and Zoey. Dear brother of Don and his wife Wilma, Art and his wife Florence and Aileen (Mrs. Floyd Allard). Fondly remembered by nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his brother James, brother-in-law Floyd Allard and a sister-in-law Val Ashley-Diebel. Ed will be remembered as a foster parent to many children. He worked at the Post Office for more than 30 years. During the war, Ed served as a gunner with the 17th Canadian Field Regiment and saw action in Italy and Belgium. He also participated in the liberation of Holland for which he received a medal from the Dutch government on the 50th anniversary of that victory. Heinz was born in Invermere, BC on October 1, 1960. He is survived by his son Heinz Joseph; mother Kay (James) McNaughton; sister Johanna Mackay; niece Summer; nephew Chance; grandmother Florence MacFarlane; uncle David (Nancy) Leckschas; aunt Barbara Banham; and cousin Michelle Banham. BURKE, EDWARD 2008-08-12 Edward Burke of North Bay passed away on Saturday, August 9, 2008. Ed was born in Sault Ste. Marie and raised in Thunder Bay. He married Helen (nee Holseth) 61 years ago. Helen predeceased him on July 2, 2008. He was employed by the Ministry of Transportation in Thunder Bay until he was transferred to North Bay in 1963. He retired in 1980. Ed was passionate about golf , building houses and dogs. He was a past club champion at Strathcona Golf Course in Thunder Bay. In retirement he and Helen enjoyed 20 years as Florida snowbirds. Ed is survived by daughters Susan Burke, Carleton Place, Melissa (Tom) Haight, Sudbury. Loving grandfather of Samantha En, Toronto, Sean Hewitt, Carleton Place, Sarah Flood (Corey), Sudbury, Adam Haight (Pam), Sudbury and great grandpa of Carly Flood, Sudbury. Ed is also survived by sisters-in-law Evelyn Godin, Burlington and Ruth Burke, Thunder Bay. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive in Thunder Bay and elsewhere. Ed was predeceased by his mother and father Ida and Mike Burke, sister Emeline Zamal, and brother Bill Burke all of Thunder Bay. MEIKLE, M. Isabel (nee Butcher) - Born December 13, 1924 in Toronto, Isabel passed away peacefully in St. Catharines on August 6, 2008. Beloved wife of the late Thomas H. Meikle (2004). Dearly loved Mother of Timothy (Marilyn) and Mark (Marlene). Proud Grandmother (Baba) to Jennifer (Alistair) Cameron, Andrew and David and great Grandmother to Evelyn and Amelia. Mrs. Meikle was a graduate of the University of Toronto and a long time volunteer with Hotel Dieu Hospital in St. Catharines, The Distress Centre of Niagara and the Ontario Association of Community Living for which she was awarded St. Catharines Citizen of the Year in 1980. BYNG Edward Alexander - It is with great sorrow that the Byng family must inform you that Edward 'Ted' Alexander Byng died suddenly and unexpectedly at home on Thursday July 31st 2008. He passed peacefully, sitting in his favorite easy chair, watching the Golf Channel. Ted was born in Port Colborne, Ontario on August 14,1948 to his proud parents, Edward Mathias and Olive Byng. He started his impressive career as a junior in banking, earned his Chartered General Accountant designation studying at night and working during the day to support his family. Over the years he earned his Chartered Secretary designation and in 1997 earned his B.A. in Arts with distinction and followed that up by a degree in Child and Youth Care from the University of Victoria, one of his proudest accomplishments. Ted worked in government in the North West Territories, and in the school district in Dawson Creek prior to assuming the position of Dean of Administration at Northern Lights College. While in Dawson Creek he met and married his wife Milda after a whirlwind romance. Ted was fortunate to be chosen in 1985 to become Secretary Treasurer of School District 47 and held that position until his retirement in 2004. He said, at that time, that so far as he knew he was the longest standing Secretary Treasurer in the Province. Ted threw himself into everything he did, with intensity. He adored his four boys, Edward 'Teddy' James, Daniel Robson, John Jeremy, and Jordan Alexander Leo; sadly he was predeceased by Teddy and by his father. Ted Byng leaves behind his grieving wife Milda, Dan (Angela) of Dawson Creek, John (Amy) of Cochrane, Alberta and Jordan (Emily) of Victoria, his 5 wonderful grandchildren, his mother Olive, of Port Colborne, Ontario, sister Sue (Jim Bunz) of Port Colborne, Ontario and brother Tim of St. Catherines, Ontario and their families. There was a gathering to join the family to remember him at Myrtle Point Golf Course at 2pm on Monday August 11th, 2008 with refreshments to follow. John Frederick Edward (Jack) Connell John Frederick Edward (Jack) Connell of 12 Phelan Street, Miramichi, aged 61 years, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, August 10th. Jack is survived by his wife, Maureen; his four daughters, Maggie (David), Cathleen (Peter), Emily, Mary Rose; and two sons, Matthew (Andrea) and Kevin; his mother and step-father, Anna and Thomas Power; his siblings, Mary (Vern) Derry, Michael (Kathy) Connell, Wayne (Karen) Power; his granddaughter, Catherine Walsh. Jack was predeceased by his father, John S. Connell. Jack was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on August 17, 1946 and taught at James M. Hill Memorial High School for 34 years. He was a local genealogist, an active community supporter, a faithful member of St. Michael's Parish community, and above all was devoted to his family. CORNFORD, George John After a long and wonderful life of 87 years, George passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday, August 10, 2008. Joanne, his loving wife of fifty-four years, predeceased George in 2000. Born and raised in Calgary, George served six years in the Canadian Navy during WWII patrolling the north Atlantic. Post war he began a life-long career in the geophysical industry extensively involved in the initial geophysical activity in Alberta as well as in North Africa and in many parts of the southern United States. In 1946 he seized upon an opportunity to work on a crew in the Texas Panhandle, where he met his wife, Joanne Peterson. George was an accomplished golfer: past President and a life-time member of Earl Grey Golf Club, past member of the Glencoe Club, an Alberta Senior's golf champion and six time winner of the annual Doodlebug tournament. George was a devoted father to his sons Darryl and Russell, loving and proud Grandpa to Emily and a very special Uncle to Gloria (Pat), Barbara, Darcie, and Chris. His memory will be cherished by his special friend Marg and his many friends and relatives in Calgary, Arizona and Texas. DODDS, David John December 19, 1943 - August 10, 2008 It is with the deepest sorrow that Pauline (Polly) announces that David, her beloved husband and friend for more than 41 years, died peacefully at the Elisabeth Bruyere Hospital on Sunday, August 10th. Loving, caring, and generous, patient, wise, and always full of humour, David will be very much missed by his brother Mike (and Jean), his sister Pam (and Brian) Stone, his sister-in-law Shirley Harris, his step-mother Anne, the many nieces and nephews, great- nieces and nephews, and god children whom he cherished and to whom he was a much loved uncle, as well as by the friends with whom he shared so many happy times. Born in Windsor, England, David came to Canada in 1969, after completing his doctorate at Exeter University, to join Statistics Canada, the department to which he devoted his career and where he earned the respect and affection of his colleagues for more than 38 years. David was overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of so many good friends over his last few months, and heartfelt gratitude is owed to all those who gave so unstintingly of their time, comfort and support to him and Polly. A memorial service will be held at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair and McGarry, 315 McLeod Street on Monday, August 18th at 2:30 p.m., followed by a reception. GREEN, MINNIE LOUISE At the York Manor Nursing Home on August 10, 2008, Minnie Louise Green formerly of New Maryland, passed away peacefully at the age of 99. Born in Lincoln NB, she was a daughter of the late Adolphus and Lena (Lawson) Green and wife of the late Harold Green. Minnie was a member of the First Wesleyan Church, and worked for John Palmer Ltd. as a stitcher. She enjoyed knitting, doing puzzles and baking, but the priority in her life was the care and love she had for her children and family. She will be most remembered for her charismatic personality. Surviving are her children Thelma Chessie of Fredericton, Allan Green (Bea) of Charters Settlement, Nancy Hodgson of Nasonworth; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren. Predeceased by a daughter Frances; son Donald; brother Harry; sister Beulah; son in law Tyler Hodgson; grandchildren Brian Chessie, Gordon Porter Jr., Vinal Porter and Cindy Green. JAMES, Charles (Charlie) Creelman - Proud Veteran of WWII - Peacefully, at the summer cottage on Knowlton Lake, early in the morning of Sunday, August 10, 2008. Charlie James, age 83, beloved husband of Elizabeth (Betty) Robertson, in their 60th year of marriage. Dear father of Susan Creasy (Tim Byrne) and David James. Affectionately known as 'Grandad' to his grandchildren, Rebecca Creasy (Aaron Buchner) and Jack Creasy. Dear brother of George Crossen James (the late Carolyn) and much loved uncle to many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents, Wilfred and Margaret James, son Michael James, son-in-law David Creasy, as well as his sister, Anne Louise James. Charlie joined the RCNVR, in late 1942, with his parents permission, at the age of 17 and a half years. He served on the frigate HMCS Jonquiere, based in Londonderry, Ireland, until the end of the war. Charlie and Betty were married in 1949. After completing his education, he joined the T. Eaton Company in Toronto and continued his career with them until his retirement in 1989. Throughout his lifetime, Charlie was very fond of nature and was an avid sports enthusiast, and he enjoyed downhill skiing, golf, curling and fishing. PRESS, Verna It is with great sadness the family of Verna Press (nee Kromm) announce her passing on August 8, 2008 at the age of 63. Verna is survived by her three sons, Darren (Sarann) of Baynes Lake, Kevin of Calgary, and Jason (Erin) of Baynes Lake and four beautiful grandchildren, Kelcee, Tyler, Ethan, and Taylor whom she adored. Also mourning her passing are her siblings, Donna (Earl) Storey, Faye (Fred) Ott, Rob (Marg) Kromm, Jim (Cheryle) Kromm, Ken Kromm, all of Calgary, her sisters-in-law, Sheila Press of Cranbrook, and Shirley Claire of Victoria and brother-in-law Larry Cerny of Fernie. She was predeceased by her husband Ray, her parents Katherine and Alex, her sister Helen Hamlin, brother Richard Kromm and her sister-in-law Ila Cerny. Verna's greatest joy were her loving boys and her grandchildren. Lovingly called "Town Mama" and "Other Gammo" she spent hours playing cards, talking on the phone and taking them for rides to the campsite, much to their enjoyment. Verna was a very significant part of her family's lives and her memory will remain within their hearts forever. She will be missed dearly by all who loved her. Cremation took place. SEITZ, Martha Martha Seitz was born on November 21, 1921 in Orion, Alberta and passed away peacefully on August 11, 2008 at the Peter Lougheed Centre in Calgary. Martha moved to Strathmore in 1947 with her husband Christian and her daughter Faye to start ranching east of Strathmore. She was very passionate about her gardening and had a deep love for her yard, ranch, and especially her grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Christian; parents Christina and Frederick Mack; and brothers Albert, Johnnie, and Archie. She leaves to mourn, her daughter Faye (Rick) Damen; grandson Darrell and his children, Travis, Justin and Tyson; granddaughter, Donna (Shawn) Mullen and their children, Tegan and Jace; brothers Fred (Emma) Mack and Bill (Marion) Mack, sister Emma Mack and sister-in-law Irma Mack.
