JEWELL, William 'Bill' Wesley - Entered into rest suddenly at the Ross Memorial Hospital on Sunday, August 10th, 2008. Bill Jewell, at the age of 55, was the beloved husband of Carol Skowronski of Balsam Lake. Loving father of Kerry and Todd of Marathon, Meggie and Derek of Balsam Lake and Kristie of Toronto. Loving son of Marjorie Jewell of Lindsay and her husband the late Gordon Teel and predeceased by his father the late Wesley Jewell. CLARK, Lee We regret to announce the passing of Lee Clark on August 10th 2008 at the age of 71. He was in recent years a resident of Lake Metigoshe, Ottawa, and previously of Brandon. Lee (or Leland as he was known until the beginning of his university days) was born in Davidson, Saskatchewan on December 16, 1936 and he continued to reside in that province until he accepted a combined teaching/Dean of Men's Residence position at Brandon College in 1964. He began his early education at Simpson, SK where he proudly recalled that he rode a horse four or so miles to school each day during the non-winter months. Later the family relocated to a farm near Doonside (a hamlet that no longer exists) and he and his younger brothers attended a local one room country school called Mountney during which time Lee was always first in his class, which was not all difficult in that he was the only one in his class! Later he transferred to Wawota High and, following graduation, he attended the University of Saskatchewan, obtaining his B.Ed in 1959 and his B.A. (Honours) in 1961. Throughout most of those years, hockey was a major part of his life -first in Wawota and later at the U of S and he forever bore some of the evidence of being a goalie before the invention of the mask! During his third year of university, Lee met and later married (in 1959) Barbara Woods, a fellow student in the Faculty of Education. Barb unselfishly gave up her own studies to support the newly married couple as Lee completed his second degree at the U of S and, subsequently, a Master of Arts at the University of Oregon. After those eight continuous years of study, Barb and Lee came back to Regina, where they both taught for one year (Lee at Sheldon Williams Collegiate) prior to the decision to join Lee's long term mentor, Dr. Charles Lightbody, at Brandon College. Cheryl, Lee and Barb's first daughter, may well be one of the few Canadian women to have been raised in a Men's Residence for her first year and a half, while Janine, the younger daughter, was born during Lee's doctoral studies at the University of Alberta. Returning to graduate studies as an adult with family responsibilities was not without its challenges but Lee proudly received his Ph.D. in Canadian history just weeks before his 40th birthday. Lee regarded himself, first and foremost, as a teacher although he was very proud of the fact that a revised form of his doctoral dissertation entitled Brandon: Its Politics and Politicians was published by the Brandon Sun as part of that newspaper's centennial celebration. During those teaching years, Lee was an extremely dedicated volunteer in the Brandon community. He was an active member of the United Church, the John Howard Society, in organizing a volunteer visitation program to the old correctional institute and in a campaign to secure a much needed detox centre for Brandon. In addition, he was a very involved member of the Progressive Conservative Party, an activity which culminated in his election as Member of Parliament for Brandon-Souris in the 1983 by-election. To serve in the government of Canada, whose history he had long studied and taught, was the realization of long-held dream and Lee and Barb worked long and hard together to fulfill the duties of being a Member of Parliament. Although his tasks were many, he was particularly pleased to be invited by the Prime Minister to serve as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture and subsequently to the Minister of the Environment. In addition, he was especially proud of his long time association with Joe Clark's and later Jean Charest's leadership campaigns. Having been re-elected in the 1984 and 1988 General Elections, Lee decided to retire from politics and he did not seek re-election in the 1993 General Election. Subsequently, he was appointed Executive Assistant to the President of Brandon University, a position he held until his retirement from that institution in 1998. Soon after, Lee and Barb decided to make their cottage at Lake Metigoshe their permanent home where Lee spent many happy summers cutting his numerous riding/hiking trails on which he and others loved to ride his several horses. Winters were spent in Ottawa so that Barb and Lee could see more of their extremely precious grandchildren. Lee regarded having the opportunity to share in Jacob's and Noah's numerous activities as a privilege and he looked forward to the trip each winter to Charlottetown so that Papa and Nana could spend quality time with Jade, their one and only granddaughter. Lee is survived by his mother Enid Clark (Alberta), wife Barb, daughters Cheryl Clark (Chris Caldwell) PEI, and Janine (Gerry Guillot) Ottawa; and by his three precious grandchildren Jacob, Noah and Jade. Lee also leaves behind brothers Bob (Donna) (AB) and Doug (ON) as well as a cousin Gail (Fred) Coward (AB). Donations in memory of Lee may be made to your choice of charity. The funeral will take place Thursday, August 14, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Central United Church, 327 - 8th Street in Brandon to be followed by a tea reception. MACVICAR, ROBERT "BOB" LLOYD - passed away suddenly on Sunday, August 10, 2008, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Saint John West on August 8, 1942, he was the son of the late Lauchlin "Duncan" MacVicar and Margaret (Flood). Bob started his fire fighting career as a volunteer with the Lancaster Fire Department in 1964, joining the Saint John Fire Department in April of 1966. He rose from rank of Lieutenant to Captain and then to District Chief in 1995, retiring in 2000 after 34 years of service. Bob was instrumental in starting the Sports and Benevolent Fund of Local 771 and served as it's pension representative for many years, also he was Chair of the 1996 Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC) which met in Saint John that year. Bob was also very active in the Boy Scouts from 1977 until his passing, he operated the canteen at Lancaster Arena for 20 years and was an active member of Lancaster Baptist Church. Bob was a loving husband, father, brother and grampy who will be sadly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Louise (Phillips); daughter, Holly (Mark) McKenzie, Saint John; son, Duncan (Paula), Saint John; sister, Betty (Melvin) Griffin, Benton, LA; brother, D. William, Toronto; grandchildren, Nicholas, Rebecca, Christopher, Robert and Bradley. Bob was predeceased by his step-mother, Gertrude MacVicar. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive visitors from 7 - 9 p.m. Tuesday and 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. Wednesday in Castle Fallsview (634-1701). A celebration of Robert's life will be held in the funeral home chapel on Thursday, August 14, 2008, at 11 a.m. Burial to follow in Ocean View Memorial Gardens. Roger E. LeBlanc 1929 - 2008 It is with sadness the family announces the passing of, Roger LeBlanc, of Fredericton (formerly of Moncton) in the Sackville Memorial Hospital on August 10 after a short battle with cancer. Roger was the son of the late Matilda and Alyre LeBlanc of Moncton; husband of 53 years to Marjorie McInnis; father to Monique (Donald) Rutherford of Dieppe, Marcia (Roger) Cormier of Dieppe, Marlene (Brian) McKenna of New Jersey, Jeffrey of Victoria BC, Richard (Stephanie) of Yoho Lake and Barry of Fredericton; Gramps to Colin, Wade, Christine, Nicholas, Renée, Mélissa, Casey, Jeremy, Katelyn, Brian, Erika and Michael; and to his great-grandsons, Jean-Michel and Ryan. Roger is also survived by his sisters, Stella Delahunt of Moncton, Jeanette Jarret of Montreal; brothers, Paul (Leatrice) of Moncton and Arthur of Saint John; sisters-in-law, Greta LeBlanc of Toronto and Rita MacFarlane of Moncton and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister, Doris; and brothers, Edgar, Ronald and Larry. Roger will be missed by his church family at St. Anthony's in Devon where he was a very active member. After retiring from the provincial government, Roger's hobbies included travelling, winemaking, and time spent with his family at the cottage in Bayfield. STEVENSON, Victor 2008-08-12 After a brief battle with cancer, Victor J. Stevenson passed away at St. Joseph‘s Hospice Unit on August 12, 2008. He was born on December 17, 1919 in Russell, Ontario and was educated in the Ottawa Valley schools. Victor graduated in 1942 with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the Tri-State University in Angola, Indiana and immediately enlisted in the USAF. However, the Canadian authorities decided he could best serve the nation in the industrial sector and he was assigned to Canadian Car and Foundry in Thunder Bay, as a design engineer. At the time, Can-Car‘s entire production was committed to the military. Equipment and parts including Hawker Hurricanes and Curtis Helldivers were manufactured in large numbers and shipped overseas. Can-Car‘s contribution to the war effort was immense and vital. Victor played a prominent role in that effort. He loved Thunder Bay and continued to work at Can-Car for his entire career, retiring in 1985. He was highly respected in the field of aviation and was often involved as a sounding board and as a consultant on design projects such as the Avro Arrow. Victor travelled the world extensively both as part of his profession and with his wife Hannah during their retirement. He enjoyed his cottage at Green Bay and served on the camper‘s association for many years. He was always willing to help his co-campers with their projects and he cherished the long term friendships that he developed there. He participated in a variety of sports and was particularly fond of baseball and hockey. He served as president of the Fort William Beavers Hockey Club. Victor was a gentle man and his life was one long quest for knowledge and understanding, covering widely diverse fields from Quantum Physics to Philosophy. In any subject that caught his interest, he was able to become somewhat of an expert. A conversation with him was always a treat, and one came away from it much the wiser. His latest pursuits include participation in Flight Ontario Simulator Group and in efforts to establish an aviation museum in Thunder Bay, the NWO Aviation Heritage Centre. Victor was predeceased by his wife Hannah (Petrunak), his parents Alan and Carrie Stevenson, and his sisters Helen Morrow, Evelyn Nienkerchen, and Ester Takalo. He is survived by several nieces and nephews. At his request, a reception will be held at WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James on Friday, August 15, 2008 at 1:00 P.M. SNOBELEN, Frances Jean - born Jan. 4, 1922 last surviving member of the family of Edith and Alonzo Thomas. Her family lived for a time on a small farm in the Kent Bridge area and later on the plot now occupied by the No-Frills grocery on Queen Street. Mom attended CCI in Chatham, taking mainly “business” courses. At a young age, Mom married Jack Goddard of Taylor Ave., Chatham. Jack shipped off to war shortly after the birth of their son Terry, born December 1, 1941. During the war, Mom worked at different jobs in Toronto and Chatham for a time mostly at war-related factory work, including a hand grenade factory. A member of the First Hussars as tank driver, Jack's tank hit a land mine a few days after D Day, leaving Mom widowed with a young son. Introduced through mutual friends, this attractive lady caught the eye of a single farmer from Blenheim, and she eventually married Morley Roy Snobelen. The three farmed on Erieau Road and eventually three more children came along. In 1962, Mom and Dad, and the three youngest moved to 100 Victoria Street Thamesville. Mom went to work at McDonalds Restaurant, in Thamesville, and later Fetters Restaurant, working the 6am shift for many years. Later Mom and Dad retired to the “Bush Nest” they built in the woodlot on the back of the family farm on Erieau Road. A few years back, Mom and Dad moved to an addition to the brick house on the front of the farm, so they could maintain their independence, but be close to their three youngest grandchildren. We remember the speed at which Mom would work, her resolve to tackle anything, and the fact that she seldom complained. We also remember her love of music and dancing. She will be missed by all of her surviving family, husband Morley, daughter Lou Ann, sons Terry and wife, Sherrell, Garnet and wife, Gayle, Albert, grandchildren Terry Lynn, Bob, Sam, Kelly, Erie, Susan and great- grandchildren Amanda, Jessica, Shayna, Jami, and Allison. ABBEY, Paul Martyn - Paul passed away in his 49th year peacefully in the woods of Northern Ontario on July 18, 2008. He is survived by his loving parents Isabel and Bob. COPP, Cami 2008-08-12 It is with great sadness the family of Cami Copp (nee Jewell) announce her passing with her family by her side on August 6, 2008. Cami‘s first loves were husband Fred, her children, her family and her dogs. She had a heartfelt and unconditional love for family, friends and even strangers. Cami had endless compassion and was always there for anyone in need. Cami‘s smile, laugh and loving spirit will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to have been touched by her. Cami always enjoyed her various occupations: hairstylist, bus driver, bartender, and more recently, OLG Casino, Thunder Bay and Manager of The Blue Oasis, Drayton Valley. Cami was a member of The Royal Purple and was always eager to learn acquiring: her high school diploma as an adult, two Management degrees from Confederation College and finally her EMT first responder course. Predeceased by her grandparents Harry and Elsie Jewell, Frank and Gladys Tinney, father Al (Snapper) Jewell and brother Bobby, Cami is survived and always loved by her beloved husband Fred, five wonderful children Roberta (Danny), Brad (Cagney), Sheleigha, Kennedy (Shaun) and Kaila, grandchildren Charissa, Cassandra, Nolan, Brady, Connor, Thomas and Peter, her loving mother Judy (Ron) and sisters Jackie (Al), Denise and Crystal (Marty). COTTENDEN, Michael J. - Sgt Mike Cottenden, CD2 military man, chainsaw operator, equestrian - Died in an automobile accident, Sunday August 10th in his 54th year. Mike was a veteran of Afghanistan 2006. He was an innovative military instructor machine guns, mortars, and vehicles. Mike was the life of the party, a giver, generous, and inspiring. He made everyone he touched, a little better for his being there. Mike will be sorely missed by his companion of 28 years, Nancy Beacon and her family, Darrel and Natalie and their families. His father Harry Cottenden, his stepmother Deed, and his three brothers Dan, Paul, John and their families. Mike was predeceased by his mother, Alma Cottenden. He will be missed by his cohorts in the Grey and Simcoe Foresters and all the riders in OCTRA. He will be mourned by his friends, in Florida, who think all Canadians are like him. DUNN, John Patrick September 30, 1956 - August 8, 2008 A gentle, loving and witty man John Patrick Dunn passed away at home in the arms of his family at the age of 51 after a brave and courageous battle with cancer. He leaves an indescribable emptiness in the lives of his loving wife Lorna Moore and his cherished sons Jeffrey and Cory. He will be sadly missed by Theresa McKinnon-Roy and Elizabeth McCarthy, dear friends of Jeffrey and Cory. John is predeceased by his father Joe Dunn. O'DONNELL, Sister Margaret (formerly Sr. Anselm) - Died tragically in a car accident on Saturday, August 9, 2008. She is the daughter of Elizabeth Mary Ashwell and Leo Melville O'Donnell. She is predeceased by her only sister Mary Anne and by her seven brothers, Leo, Francis, Maurice, Thomas, Basil, Joseph and Douglas. She will be dearly missed by her many nieces, nephews and close friends. Sister Margaret entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1942 and served in the ministry of education as both teacher and principal, as well as school librarian for more than forty years. Sr. Margaret then moved into caring for special needs students as well as spiritual care with the elderly. She was a friend and support to many of her Sisters in community. In 2003, she celebrated her 60th anniversary as a Sister of St. Joseph. O'BRIEN, Louise (Florentino) December 13, 1920 - August 10, 2008 Louise Bernice O'Brien passed away in the company of the people she loved on Sunday, August 10, 2008 at the age of 87 years. Louise was born in Kamsack, SK to new Canadian immigrant parents from Italy and the Ukraine. Her roots were both a source of pride and inspiration to her. Louise worked as a legal and land secretary for Shell Canada until her retirement, at which time she enrolled in and graduated with honours from SAIT's Culinary Arts Program. She had a catering business for fifteen years, and as recently as last week was baking her special biscotti for her friends and family. Louise was a generous and proud Calgarian who donated to causes benefitting women and children at risk. Although she was on a fixed income for years, her commitment to the less fortunate was always a priority to her. Louise loved to cook, bake, and garden and to bestow upon all her friends her wonderful fare and garden produce. Louise will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Sheila O'Brien and son-in-law Kevin Peterson; her adopted and much loved daughter Barbara Guthrie; special friends Morris and Polly Pratt, Tony, Barbara and Patrick El-Moussa, and Jane and Tim McCarroll, and by numerous friends and Florentino family relatives from Winnipeg and Amato, Cantanzaro, Italy. She was predeceased by her husband Paddy, daughter Denise, and by her mother Olga Florentino all in 1975. BIESER, James Edward (Jim) - Suddenly at Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital on Monday, August 11; in his 80th Year. Devoted husband for the past 56 years of Alice (nee Towse). Big brother to Beatrix Palmer of Overland Park, Kansas and Leola Stevens of Margate, Florida. Predeceased by brother Leo Francis Bieser. Loving father of Jim (Sally Pritchard), Mike (Joan Shorter), Sue (Dan Landry), Stephanie (Marc Gratton). Proud Papa of Alexis and Jillian Bieser, and Jake and Alissa Landry. Born in Centralia, Illinois on December, 8, 1928. Jim proudly served his country in the United States Navy before graduating from Southern Illinois University. Upon honourable discharge in 1949 he worked for IBM, U.S., before co- founding International Computers of Canada Ltd. in Toronto in 1969. He was also a long-time employee of Xerox Canada moving with his family to the Orillia area in 1973. Jim was past president of both the Ontario and Canadian Quarter Horse Associations, past-president of the Twin Lakes Probus Club, active member of the Couchiching Point Ratepayers' Association, past-president of the Xerox Retirees Association and a member and Eucharistic minister at Guardian Angels Church. Jim was an avid sportsman, angler and gardener. The family would like to thank Dr. Reid and Dr. Ho, all of the doctors, nurses and staff of Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, with special thanks to emergency department staff and to special friends and neighbours Carolyn and Rob Jones.
