COPELAND, Norine It is with sadness for the loss, but also with gratitude for the lifetime of love and humour that we attempt to say goodbye to our dear mother, grammie and great- gramma, who passed away July 16, 2008 at the wonderful age of 99. Gail Norine Peterson was born on the family farm to Gale and Helen Peterson June 13, 1909, at Parkers Corners, Michigan. Having lost her mother when she was sixteen, Norine and younger sister Marian were left to manage the household, a fact that contributed to her strength, independence, and legendary stubborn streak (well survived in her offspring). After attending business college and working in Detroit, she married R.J. Copeland (Copey) in 1933. They shared happy times raising a family while moving throughout the south in the geophysical business, culminating in their final move to Calgary. She was still the hub of a turning world, the one constant in an ever changing time. She passed along her love of words, singing, sewing, gardening, major cookie baking, card playing, golfing (Earl Grey Golf Club for more than fifty years), and any competitive game enjoyed with family, especially when combined with a martini and laughter. Norine is survived by her children, Bruce (Robin) Copeland, Hal Copeland and Gail (Ken) McDonald, four granddaughters and their families Deanna (Craig) Fishel (Toni and Forrest), Kim (Scott) Delong (Paige and Michaela), Maureen (Jamie) Stewart (Christopher and Emma), Amy (Lou) Campa (Virginia). Norine is also survived by her sister Marian (Vern) Minkley, niece Virginia Christensen and numerous nieces and nephews. Norine was predeceased by her husband of fifty-three years, Ralph in 1986. We will sorely miss the sense of homecoming that walking into her home always provided. So, thank you, and rest easy knowing you are loved and missed by a saddened yet grateful family. The life he knew was taken away from him by a drunk driver on Ontario Street near Fort Frontenac on July 16, 2004. The Lord, in His tender mercy, released him from his painful, broken body and gave him peace. O'LEARY, Michael J. “Mike“ - (1916 - 2008) - Michael J. “Mike“ O'Leary, son of the late John J. O'Leary and Margaret Quinlan of Douro Township, passed away peacefully at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre on Monday, July 14, 2008 at the age of 92 years. Born in Douro on May 31, 1916, Mike was predeceased by his sisters Kathleen (McCormick), Amelia (Garvey), Elizabeth (Douglas) and Mary; as well as brothers Joseph, John and Francis. Mike is survived by many loving nieces, nephews and extended family. He will also be remembered fondly by the many friends he made during his active life in Peterborough's business and sports communities. A real estate enthusiast for more than 30 years, Mike was Past- President and Honourary Life Member of the Peterborough Real Estate Board. Outside of the office, Mike could be found living his greatest passion on the 18th hole. He was a member of the Lift Lock Golf and Country Club, and Past President and member of the Peterborough Golf and Country Club. Mike was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for more than six decades, after serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force in World War Two. Mike's heart was always with his community where he gave of his time as Honourary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus and the Saint Vincent de Paul Society. Mike's family would like to express their sincere thanks to his good friend Ken Withers and his wife Marion for all their love and support, especially during Mike's final days. Thanks also to the staff of the Peterborough Regional Health Centre and Rubidge Residence for their care and compassion. IRWIN, Ross B. DFM-CD - passed away peacefully at his home in Victoria, BC on July 15, 2008. Ross is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Elfrieda Irwin, many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. During the Second World War he served with the RAF in bomber command and received an immediate award of the DFM for his efforts during a night-fighter attack during a raid on Wupperthal, Germany. After the war Ross studied medicine, joined the Navy and served as an Anesthetist in five military hospitals and acted as Commanding Officer of three of the four major hospitals in existence at the time. DUNLOP, Mary Eileen - of Teeswater passed away at Mindemoya Hospital, Manitoulin Island on Wednesday July 16th, 2008 in her 81st year. Beloved wife of Cameron Dunlop of Teeswater. Dear mother of Barbara Hughson and husband Norm of Manitoulin Island, Ronnie Dunlop and wife Diane of Val Caron, Donnie Dunlop and wife Debbie of Garson and Karen Spec and husband Greg of Naughton. COCHRANE, William Blake - Blake passed away peacefully July 16th surrounded by love at Bluewater Health Palliative Care after a 12 day struggle at the age of 69. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 50 years (June 20th) Shirley (Batson) and his children Cindy Zahavich, Michael, Cheryl (Roger) Hurst and his loving sidekick Katie. Missing grampa will be his grandchildren Christopher and Jordan Hurst, Natalie and Tracy Zahavich. Loved son and brother of Mildred Cochrane, Larry (Jennifer), Troy (Pam), Kathleen (Paul) Gibbons, Sharon (Rod) Wilson and his aunt Kate Cochrane. Son-in-law of Clara Batson (Ray Williams) and brother-in-law of Leroy (Kitty) Batson, Harold (Barb) Batson, Ken Batson as well as several nieces and nephews. Blake is predeceased by his father and father-in-law Lawrence Cochrane and Walter Batson and his niece Tracy Burns. Blake fought so hard to stay with us but this was a battle he couldn't win. His wife and children are honouring Blake's wishes that there be no visitation or funeral service. Cremation has taken place with interment at a later date. Blake was a Holmes Foundry retiree. We are so grateful to Dr. Vivian McAllister of University Hospital in London who performed Blake's Pancreatic Cancer Surgery in May 2005. Without him Blake would have never been given the past 3 years of life. Much appreciation goes out to Dr. Cornelis who tried so hard to save Blake. A very special thank you to Dr. Yoshida, Dr. Maddison and Dr. Kareemi as well as the special nurses in Palliative Care who made this very sad time a little easier. Samuel Earl Emke, of Chesley, formerly of RR 2 Elmwood, passed away at Elgin Abbey, Chesley on Friday, July 11, 2008 in his 88th year. Samuel was born in Brant Township, youngest son of the late William and Mary (Nuhn) Emke. For many years he resided on his sheep farm outside of Elmwood. Loving brother of Dan of Durham. Sam will be fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews. Helena Toner 1925-2008 Au Manoir de Grand-Sault, le vendredi 18 juillet 2008, à l'âge de 83 ans, est décédée Helena Fyfe, épouse de feu Joyner Toner, domiciliée à Grand-Sault. Née à Edmundston en 1925, elle était la dernière survivante des enfants de feu Herbert Fyfe et de feu Florence McKillian. Elle a été précédée par sept frères, Garfield, Linwood, Carl, Jim, Emery, Elmer et Guy, et deux soeurs, Bernice Fife et Irene Horncastle. Mme Toner était très engagée auprès du "Catholic Women's League" et de la Légion de Marie ainsi que du Club 4-H. Elle était instrumentale dans la formation des laïcs, dans l'école de la foi et était membre de la chorale paroissiale pendant de nombreuses années. Helena laisse dans le deuil de nombreux amis ainsi que ses filles, Edel (Richard Rogala) de Burnaby, CB, Jane (Eric Robichaud) de Grand-Sault, NB et Lori (Ken Burns) de Lynden, ON, et ses fils, John (Heather Pringle) de O’Leary, IPE, Paul (Martina Van Kessel) de Grand Bay-Westfield, NB et Alan (Andrée Leclerc) de Lower Sackville, NE ainsi que ses petits-enfants, Katie (Ben), Kerri (Joel), Emma, Brenna, Kylie et Mitchell. CROSTON, Noreen Mildred 1922 - 2008 Noreen Mildred Croston of Calgary passed away at the Foothills Hospital on Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at the age of 86 years. Noreen was born in Calgary to Gertrude and Charles Edward (Ned) McInnis on January 3, 1922. She was educated in Calgary at Crescent Heights High School where her picture hangs on the wall along with her two daughters. Noreen is survived by her two daughters, Betty (Barry) Illingworth of Calgary and their daughter Erin and Rob Dickson, and grandchildren MacKenzie, Josh and Kyler and son Brad Illingworth, Barbara (Warren) Cousins of Prince George, her three grandchildren Bill (Cheryl) Cousins, Tina Cousins and Thane Cousins and two great-grandchildren Scott and Nolan Cousins. She is also survived by her sister Ruth Robertson and her children Glen (Sharon) Robertson, Nancy (Jack) Buchan, Gordon (Val) Robertson and Mark Robertson and their families. She is predeceased by her first husband James Harold (Pat) Pettigrew (1956) and second husband Murrey Croston (2003), as well as by her infant brother Alan. Noreen is also survived by various Croston family members in Canada and New Zealand. Noreen was a longtime employee of the Calgary Herald. She had strong ties to her family in Prince Edward Island and her other family in England and enjoyed her visits there. Noreen enjoyed researching her genealogy and wandering through cemeteries looking up her relatives. She loved to travel, especially with her girls. Noreen enjoyed her many hobbies and we are thankful to be left with her needlepoint masterpieces. She loved her many faithful animals Tammy, Soupy and Scotty. Noreen's Life will be celebrated with a Visitation and Reception at FOSTER'S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 - 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen's Park Cemetery) on Monday, July 21, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. Interment at Queen's Park Cemetery.
