AGNEW, G.H. "Howard" July 4, 1932 - July 15, 2008 G.H. "Howard" Agnew passed away peacefully at the Carewest - Dr. Vernon Fanning Centre on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at the age of 76 years. Howard leaves Alison, his devoted wife, partner and best friend for fifty-four years and daughter Heather Agnew; daughter Aline Walker (Stuart), grandchildren Victoria and Jason; son Richard (Wilma), grandchildren Tyler (Megan), Sarah and Samantha; and his sister Myrtle Schmidt. Howard was predeceased by his mother Sadie, in 1987 and father George, in 1972. Howard was born in Winnipeg, July 4, 1932. After obtaining a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manitoba he was recruited by Texaco Canada which resulted in Howard and Alison moving to Alberta. Throughout his thirty-seven year career in the oil and gas industry Howard was known for his integrity, leadership and passion for the industry. Howard and family lived in several places including Venezuela, Denver, Edmonton, and Toronto but Calgary was always considered to be home. Soon after the merger of Texaco with Imperial Oil, which he helped orchestrate as COO of Texaco Canada, Howard retired and focused his energy on enjoying retirement. His first venture was to create a beautiful family retreat and legacy in Invermere and then to travel, this time for pleasure and not for business. Together, Howard and Alison traveled to a number of countries and made many wonderful memories and friends. Howard was a very active supporter of Scouts Canada as a leader and as a Director of the Calgary Scout Foundation. He was awarded the Medal of Merit for his many years of dedicated service. He was a wonderful husband, father, father-in-law, "papa", brother and friend to us all. Né le 22 mars 1952, Louis-Nova était fils de Simonne et de feu Fred Hébert, de Sainte-Marie-Saint-Raphaël. Il laisse dans le deuil une fille, Janice Hébert (Guy Larocque) et un fils, Pier-Luc Hébert (Maryse Larocque), ainsi que deux petits-enfants qu’il adorait énormément: Louis-Patrick (son petit trésor) et Maïka (sa petite princesse), tous de Pigeon Hill. GJERTSEN, Bjorn Kristian (Kris) June 28, 1930 - July 16, 2008 Kris Gjertsen, beloved husband of Bertha Gjertsen of DeWinton, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at the age of 78 years. Kris immigrated to Calgary from Bergen, Norway in 1952. He met and married Bertha Rodvang in 1955. Kris and Bertha founded their family business, Kristian Electric Ltd. in 1964, which is still operating successfully today. Kris had many accomplishments being a President of the Electrical Contractors of Calgary (1971/1972 and 1985/1986) and President of the Electrical Contractors of Alberta (1997/1998). He was a member of the Masonic Concord Lodge No. 124, a member of the Alazhar Shrine Clown Unit, the Sons of Norway, and Torske Klubben. Kris will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Besides his loving wife Bertha, Kris is survived by his children and their spouses, Dean and Jennifer, Kevin and Cindy, Wayne and Marian, Randi and Don, and Karna and Mel; twelve grandchildren, Chad, Jessica, Justin, Jerry, Sonja, Claire, Kaila, Laura, Morgan, Mitchell, Caston, and Jace; and three great-grandchildren, Hayden, Loa and Jackson. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Rigmor and Bjorn Boyum; and numerous extended family. John William Baxter John William Appleton aged 47, passed away at his home in Columbia, Tennessee on June 29, 2008. Born in Moncton, NB; he graduated from Rothesay Collegiate School and attended the University of New Brunswick and Middle Tennessee State University. He was formerly employed by the Dept. of Justice, Fredericton, NB. and most recently with Home Depot in Nashville, TN and Pulaski, TN. John had a great passion for Flying and American football. He was an original season ticket holder with the Tennessee Titans football club. He is survived by his parents, John and Judy (Nickerson) Baxter, Shediac Cape, NB and Bethlehem, IN; sisters, Krista (Robert) Hynes, Louisville KY and Kelleah (Barry) Fulmer, New Albany, IN, nieces, Emily Hynes, Ashley Fulmer and nephew, John Fulmer; Paternal grandfather, Marshall Nickerson, Royal Court, Riverview, NB; several aunts and uncles, and his close and dear friend, Kristin Thurlow of Fredericton, NB. BOWES, GRACE ELIZABETH - The death of Grace Bowes, beloved wife, mother, sister and friend, occurred suddenly at her home on Alward Street, on Wednesday, July 16, 2008. She was born in Corner Brook, NL on March 25, 1931 to the late Charles and Mary (Tait) Sexton. Grace worked for Sears in the Fabric and Notions Department and as a receptionist for Clarke Drummie & Co.. She was a member of St. John Baptist (Mission Church) and St. Clement Church and the Millidgeville Seniors Club. Grace is survived by her loving husband, Kenneth of Saint John, NB; three daughters, Debbie Riordon (Guy) of St. Anns, ON, Joan Wilson (Reg) Bathurst, NB and Mary Lou Doucette (Chris) of Saint John, NB; two sons, Tony (Anne) Elford and John Elford both of Saint John, NB; two sisters, Nena Basha (Reg) of Corner Brook, NL and Blanche Rousell of Dartmouth, NS; sister in-law, Rhoda Sexton; 11 grandchildren, Jacob and Rhoda Scott, Deidre and Shane Riordon, Colin and Dustin Wilson, Erin Elford, Nicholas and Michelle Doucette, Lynsi and Jordan Elford; one great granddaughter, Emma Scott; and several nieces and nephews. Herbert married Rolande (Legault) in 1956 in Sturgeon Falls. Herbert was a longtime and well liked Coniston resident. He had been a miner at INCO retiring in 1990 with 30 years service. He was a former member of the Coniston Royal Canadian Legion. In healthier days, Herbert was an avid golfer often golfing at the Twin Stacks Golf Course. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. ELLIOTT, Emma After many good years on this earth, Aunt Emma's journey ended peacefully at the George Boyack Care Centre on July 15, 2008 at the age of 87. Emma was born July 28, 1920 in Mazenod, SK to parents Gottfried and Mary Krauss, homesteaders from Russia. Emma was one of fourteen and although she had no children of her own, she became a mother and grandmother to many. Emma was predeceased by two husbands Karl Larvick of Mazenod, SK (buried in Creston, BC) and James Elliott of Seattle, Washington; two infant sisters, her beloved sister Olga Barr; six brothers; her niece and loving goddaughter Marion (Barr) Firmston. Emma will be lovingly remembered by a special niece Marlene (Barr) Neff and a special nephew Jim (Judy) Barr, who were always close and supportive; as well as four brothers and their families, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and many other relatives and friends. Emma lived many years in the Mazenod area, later moving to BC and Seattle, where she married James Elliott. After the death of her husband Jim, Emma moved to Calgary in 1980 to be near her sister Olga and her family. Emma leaves behind many treasured memories in the hearts of many. ELLIS, Phyllis Margaret (nee Currie) January 1, 1922 - July 15, 2008 Phyllis Margaret Ellis (nee Currie), beloved wife of Bob of Calgary, previously of Hanna and Coronation, AB, passed away on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at the Agape Hospice, at the age of 86 years. Phyllis was born "Phyllis Currie" in Medicine Hat, AB on January 29, 1922. She moved to Coronation in 1929, where she met Robert Ellis and after he returned from overseas in 1945, they were married in Winnipeg. Returning to Coronation, they started a family of three. Phyllis was involved as a member of the St. David's United Church in Calgary. In past years, she was involved in the many aspects of the church and only recently discontinued working with the Communi Pastoral Care Committee. In Coronation and Hanna, prior to retiring to Calgary in 1987, Phyllis was heavily involved with her life-long friends, community and church. Everyone she met would be met with a smile and they would then leave with a smile in their hearts. Besides her loving husband Robert "Bob" Ellis, Phyllis is also survived by her children, Robert and Mary Ann Ellis of Sacramento, CA, Margaret Deegan and Tom and Joan Ellis, all of Calgary; her six grandchildren and her three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Dorothy Thomas of Ladner, BC. Phyllis was predeceased by her brother Robert "Bob" Currie. KNAPP, Lola May (nee Bateman) Our dear mother passed away peacefully, after a brief illness, in Lethbridge on Sunday, July 13, 2008 in her 89th year. Predeceased by husband Chester Lawrence (Bill) Knapp in 1996, brothers Robert, Glenn and Earl, and sister Vella Friend. Survived by brother Henry Bateman of Carmangay and sister Jean Bignell of Trail. Lovingly remembered by son Blaine (Carolyn (nee) Irwin) of Ottawa, daughter Karonne Maxwell of Vancouver and son Paul (JoAnne Collins) of Calgary, granddaughters Amanda Knapp of Duncan, Ashley Knapp of Ottawa and Sidney Knapp of Calgary, grandsons Michael Weld of Vancouver and Mitchell Knapp of Calgary, numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends and former students. Lola and Bill farmed near Vulcan, Alberta, and Lola taught elementary at Brant and Vulcan Schools from 1956 to 1975. In 1980 they retired to Sooke, BC, and then returned to Lethbridge in 1990. At Lola's request, there will be no Service, and in keeping with her wishes, Cremation has taken place. SHERRITT, George Armstrong Born July 2, 1922 in Toronto, George died suddenly on Monday, July 14, 2008 at the age of 86 in Calgary. George is survived by his loving wife of fifty-nine years, Sally, his son, Michael and grand-dog, Fraser. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Sarah Sherritt, his stepmother, Edith, and his sister, Peg. George grew up in Toronto, spending his summers at Big Bay Point and attending UTS where he made many life-long friends. George first moved to Alberta in 1949 and permanently to Calgary in 1969. In his business career, George was an accomplished financier. Throughout his life, he gave freely of his time to his friends as well as worthy causes, including Meals on Wheels and CESO. George received the Governor General's Award in recognition of his record blood donations. George was a keen golfer and a student of the game. George's cheerful approach to life touched all who had the privilege to know him; he was "unforgettable". George was comforted in his final moments by his family and his special friend, Barb Paul. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Stephen's Anglican Church, 1121 - 14 Avenue S.W., Calgary on Monday, July 21, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Brian Pearson and Rev. Graham Goode presiding. WARE, Audrey Verna (McAninch) - Passed away peacefully at GNGH on June 27, 2008 at age 93. Predeceased by her beloved husband, Arnold (1990). Survived by her sister Dolores (Alex) McCormack of Thornhill. Predeceased by brother Ashley McAninch, sister June Garrett and Mazie McAninch. Cherished mother of Ron (deceased 1999), Dennis (Dorothy) of Guelph, Verna (Jim) Craig of Niagara Falls. Audrey will be sadly missed by grandchildren. Laureen Ware, Susan Untch, Andrea Cook, Catharine Craig, Alicia Smith, Jennifer Blakely, and by her great- grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Audrey was a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls, and an active member of the Community of Christ, serving as Women's Director, church School Director, and choir member. As well as being a devoted mother and homemaker, she volunteered with Maple Street Home and School Association, Local Council of Women, Dorchester Manor, and the Conservative Party of Canada. She enjoyed line dancing, Tai Chi, Yoga and playing the piano. There will be a memorial service celebrating her life on Saturday July 26, 2:30 p.m., at the Community of Christ, 4865 Saint. BARACETTI, Oliva - passed away at the Extended Care Unit of the Welland Hospital on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 in her 101st year. Beloved mother of Mary Kuhar (Louis), Enrico Baracetti and Valentino Baracetti (Santina). Loving grandmother of Enrico, Michael, Laura and Lynda Baracetti and Anna, Stefan and Eric Kuhar. She will be lovingly remembered by her 12 great grandchildren and family in Italy and Argentina. Predeceased by her husband Davide, daughter-in-law Janet, sister Giovanna in Italy and brothers Giovanni and Dalio and sister Regina in Argentina. Oliva was born in Rivolto, Codroipo, Friuli, Italy and came to Canada with her 3 children to join her husband in 1949. Oliva was a member of Fogolar Furlan of Niagara and a former member of the St. Mary's CWL. She enjoyed spending her time gardening, knitting, playing bingo and socializing with others. Oliva will be remembered as a dear friend who always had time for everyone. To her family and friends she is an icon that will be missed and a legend that will forever be remembered. The family received their friends at J.J. Patterson & Sons Funeral Residence 19 Young Street, Welland on Thursday from 7-9 p.m. and Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. where a Vigil was held on Friday at 2 o'clock. MARY KENT GARVEN (NEE ALLAN) 1928 - 2009 - The family of Mary Kent Garven, of Orillia, is sad to announce her sudden passing after a brief yet courageous and determined fight at Orillia's Soldiers' Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, July 16th, 2008; in her 81st Year. Mary was born in Perthshire, Scotland in 1928 to David Allan and Christina Morrison Cochrane. Mary was the loving wife of the late John Garven of Orillia and a devoted and loving mother to John Garven of Cumberland Beach. Proud and loving grandmother to Breanne. Mary is survived by her adoring sister Margaret Eccleston (Jimmy) and brother David Lawrence Allan (Margaret) of Scotland. She will be remembered fondly as Auntie Mary in Canada to her many nieces and nephews and their families in Scotland. Mary will be sadly missed by all, including her circle of great friends. Cremation. A Tea and Celebration of Life will be had where friends, acquaintances and family can gather at the home of her son, John, later this summer. Mary would ask, if you wish to make a donation, to please follow your heart and make a choice in her name. GREEN, Harry - Passed away with his family at his side at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, July 16, 2008 in his 77th year. Beloved husband of 57 years to May (nee: Downey) of Cambridge. Cherished father of Christine (Casey) Winter of Cambridge and the late Brenda Garant (1990). Loved grandfather of Elizabeth Hanson, Tony Skanes and Teresa Winter and dearly loved by seven great grandchildren.
