LAWRENCE, Frances 2008-07-15 1908 - 2008 After a brief illness, Frances Lawrence passed away at Pioneer Ridge on July 14, just two months before her 100th birthday. Born in 1908 on Manitoulin Island, Frances Letitia Irwin moved with her family to Fort William while still a young girl. They settled in Westfort, where she later met and married Charles Lawrence. Together they raised their four children. Frances was a member of St. Thomas’ Anglican Church all her life, and she actively served there until her later years. Her life was built around her faith and her family, and these two things determined all of her life’s decisions. She will be remembered for her loving heart, sweet disposition, and her gracious spirit. Frances was predeceased by her husband Charles and her son Charles. Survived by three daughters; June Chaplin, Bunnie Lawrence, and Sharron (John) Forshaw. Also survived by many grandchildren and great grandchildren. In keeping with her wish for simplicity, a private family service will take place, conducted by Archdeacon Andrew Hoskin of St. Thomas’ Anglican Church. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery. If friends desire, memorial donations to St. Thomas’s Anglican Church or to Pioneer Ridge Home for the Aged would be appreciated. Jean Murray (Shannon) Jean Murray, 66 of Toronto, Ont., formerly of West River, Albert County, passed away Saturday, July 12, 2008, at the Toronto East General Hospital. Born in Moncton she was the daughter of Marion (Kennie) Shannon and the late William Shannon. She is survived by her mother Marion of Riverside-Albert; children Gina Murray and Stuart Murray of Toronto; brothers Billy (Cheryl), George, Danny (Carol), Philip (Wanda); sisters Marion Rae (Jim) and Dianne Russell; several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from the Harvey Baptist Church on Wednesday 7-9 pm. and from where the funeral will be held Thursday, 2 pm. with Rev. Jack Allan officiating. Interment will be at Bayview Cemetery. McQUILKIN, Jack Campbell - succumbed peacefully on Thursday, July 9, 2008 at the Welland Hospital at the age of 82. Jack was an avid sportsman and had a particular interest in golf and fishing. He was proud to serve overseas for his country in the Canadian Forces during WWII. So many people will miss his charming mannerisms, especially his wife of over 57 years, Marcienne (Levesque), his children Mark, Cheryl McQuilkin, Avril Dadds (Clive), Nancy McQuilkin, and his grandchildren Vanessa, Jonathon and Matthew. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews. Mr. McQuilkin was predeceased by his brother Tom, and his sisters Peggy Byspalko, Grace McQuilkin and Georgina McQuilkin. Cremation has taken place. LEIGHTON, Janet Swanston (nee Stevenson) November 22, 1906 - July 11, 2008 In the early morning of July 11, 2008, Janet (known to family and friends as Jess) peacefully passed away in the company of loved ones at Bow View Manor in Calgary. Jess was born on November 22, 1906 near Falkirk, Scotland to Robert and Janet Stevenson, the eldest child in a family of five children. In 1923, Jess immigrated with her father to Canada, settling in rural southern Alberta. Shortly thereafter they were joined by her mother, brothers, Robert and Steve; and sisters, Ella and Jean. Jess later took a job in Calgary where she met the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Leighton, and they married in 1926. Together they had four children, Jean, Margaret, Robert (Joanne), and Janet (Fred). A devoted parent, Jess accompanied her husband throughout western Canada on his postings with the CPR, experiencing a happy and fruitful life in many prairie locales across British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. In Wetaskiwin, AB, Jess became Worthy Matron of the local chapter of the Society of the Eastern Star. Bob and Jess retired in Calgary, where they enjoyed the company of family and many friends. Bob predeceased Jess in 1974, as did their daughter Jean in 1973. At the age of ninety-five years, Jess took her final trip home to her beloved Scotland. In 2006, she celebrated her one-hundreth birthday in Calgary in true Scottish fashion, surrounded by her extended family. Jess is survived by Gerald Stevenson, three children, eleven grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Jess' vivacious spirit, strength of character, and dedication to family shone to those who knew her. "Jess, Mom, Grandma, and Nana we'll miss you and you will always be in our hearts." Margaret worked at St. Paul's school, Beaconsfield for twenty-eight years where she nurtured a generation of children. Her retirement was spent happily with family and friends. SMITH, Eustace William (Bill) November 21, 1925 - July 13, 2008 E. William Smith (Bill), beloved husband of Jean Burnice Smith, passed away peacefully at the age 82 years. Bill was born and raised in Montreal. At age seventeen he volunteered to join the Royal Canadian Navy and served aboard the HMCS Hallowell as a wireless telegraphist on convoy escort and antisubmarine patrols in the North Atlantic during WWII. While in port at Halifax in 1945, he met a young WREN named Jean Wright at a picnic. They married in 1951 after Bill graduated from McGill University with a degree in Civil Engineering. Together Bill and Jean raised seven children. Throughout those busy years, Bill worked for Shawinigan Water and Power in Quebec; Stone and Webster Consulting in New York City; then moved to Calgary in 1966 to work for Calgary Power (now TransAlta Corp). He retired as Vice President Customer Service in 1985. Among his volunteer positions, Bill was Chairperson of Calgary Hire-a-Student; a Board member of the Northwest Electric Light and Power Association (NELPA); Committee Chairman of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce; and served as Vice President and then President of the Alberta Chamber of Commerce 1985 to 1986. Bill really enjoyed camping and travelling with his family. A source of great joy was the time at their cabin on Flathead Lake in Montana, where he spent many hours sailing. At the age of sixty-nine years, Bill began a second career as a gentleman rancher raising cattle on a property near Sundre, Alberta. Bill is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Jean, and their seven children; Susan, Sandra Schorr (Barry), Stuart (Su), Sheena van Dyk (Bart), Stephen (Ann), Scott (Debbie), Stan (Wendy), as well as eighteen grandchildren. A Memorial Service to honour Bill's life will be held at the Southern Alberta Pioneers Memorial Building (3625 - 4 Street S.W. - access from Mission Road) on Friday, July 18, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded to the family through www.commemorativeservices.ca . UNRUH, Theodore "Ted" 2008-07-15 June 21, 1928 to July 11, 2008 Our husband, dad, and grandpa Ted Unruh, age 80 years, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 11, 2008 with his loved ones by his side. Ted was born on June 21, 1928 in Saskatoon, SK to Cornelius and Tena Unruh and was raised in Medstead, SK. Dad moved east, when he was only sixteen, to the mines of Quebec and then started working his way back west until he hit Sudbury. There he met and later married our mom Jeanne (Husereau) Unruh. Dad worked in Sudbury until the fall of 1964, when he took a transfer with the Ministry of Transport to Fort William, Ontario. He worked for the MTO for 12 years, moving over to the City of Thunder Bay until retirement in 1993. After retirement he worked for McKevitt Trucking in the driver training and licencing division. He could be found at any one of the Tim Horton‘s for early coffee with the boys. Dad loved to fish and travel, only stopping when health took a toll on him. Ted will be missed by his loving wife of 57 years, Jeanne; his children: Tena (Terry) Smith, Carol (Lawrence) Perrier, TJ Unruh (Eileen Izzard), and Jeff Unruh; his grandchildren: David, Rebecca, Jessica, Adam, Mandy, Tonya, Kyle, Sarah, Terrance, Colleen, and David; brothers Irvin (Maggie) and Reuben (Mary); and sister Verna. Many nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. Ted was predeceased by his mother Tena (1939), father Cornelius (1966), and his son Brian (1970). Funeral Services for the late Theodore Unruh will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16, 2008 in Calvary Lutheran Church with Pastor John Schmidt officiating. Friends may gather one hour prior to service. Private family interment to follow at a later date. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday evening (TONIGHT) from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street. PAWLUK, Victoria 2008-07-15 Vickie (Ficek) Pawluk (née Kuzminski) went peacefully home to be with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, on July 12, 2008. Born in Dubno, Poland, Vickie immigrated to Canada as a baby in 1929, living in Stuartburn, Manitoba until her family settled in Fort William in 1942. She married Peter Paul Ficek in 1947 and had two beautiful daughters, Wendie and Deborah. Peter predeceased her in 1981. Vickie married Walter Pawluk in 1985. Together, they saw the world, travelling extensively through Europe, Canada and the United States. Vickie was full of life, love, vivacity and compassion. She lived for her friends and family. She loved to cook, work on crafts, and practice her special gift of hospitality. An avid nature-lover, Vickie took great pride in her garden. She adored animals, especially her cat, Mopsy. Vickie never missed an opportunity to help others. She devoted her life to volunteer service, working with St. John’s Ambulance for 26 years, Telecare for 22 years, and home nursing for twelve years. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels, the Diabetic Association, Christian Women’s Association, and the Emergency Ward at McKellar Hospital. She was awarded an Achievement Award by the City of Thunder Bay for her distinguished contribution to the community. Her volunteer experiences equipped her to care for her husband, Peter, for five years after he lost his leg. A member of Redwood Park Church for the past 45 years, Vickie was always steadfast in her faith and grateful to the Lord for the blessings He bestowed on her. Vickie will be sadly missed by her husband, Walter, her daughters Wendie (Robbie) Glougie and Deborah (Muni) Ficek, her grandchildren Jennifer (Rowan) Glougie and Jonathon (Lindsay) Glougie, her sisters Emily (Bill) Gelevan and Verna Staniecki, and oodles of nieces and nephews, whom she adored. Vickie is predeceased by her first husband, Peter, her parents, Dora and Jacob, and her siblings Peter, Vera, Nancy (Chalet), George, Laverne (Craven), Leonard and William. CAIL, LOWELL - Lowell Cail, "The Cedars", Rexton, NB passed away peacefully at the Stella Maris Hospital, Ste. Anne de Kent, on July 12th, 2008, sixteen days short of his 101st birthday. Born in Pine Ridge, Kent County, he was the son of the late George and Annie (Whitney) Cail. He was the last surviving member of nine siblings. Lowell was married to the love of his life, the late Hazel (MacMichael), for 62 years. Lowell lived a full life in business, community, church and family. He operated a Ford dealership with partner, the late Burpee Jardine, and then as owner of Cail's Esso. Lowell was the first Mayor of the Village of Rexton from 1966-1969; Charter Member of the Rexton Lions Club who recognized his community service with their 1st Melvin Jones Fellowship; Past Master of Lodge St. Andrew No. 16F. & A.M. having received his 60 year pin on his 100th birthday; and Life Member of St. Andrew Chapter No. 28, OES. St. Andrew's Church was near and dear to his heart. Over the years, Lowell served in the choir, on the Manse & Cemetery Committees, and was instrumental in erecting the church hall. He was an Elder serving on the Session for 32 years and he was made an Honorary Elder in 1996. St. John's Church, West Branch, held special interest for Lowell over his lifetime and he was always interested in the life of the congregation. It is in St. John's Cemetery where he will have his resting place. During his lifetime, there wasn't anything that Lowell wouldn't try - and he succeeded as mechanic, carpenter, plumber, and electrician, to name a few. The last few years of his life, he had to "wait" for Jim Roach and Elie Mazerolle to do those tasks for him. In his "spare time", he enjoyed working with stained glass and turning the bases for his "one of a kind" lampshades. Many of his creations turned up under the Christmas trees of family and friends. He is survived by Margie Wilson, his beloved niece and daughter, Gloria Jackson; his 'adopted daughter'; sister-in-law & brother-in-law, Marion & Harold Stephenson; and many nieces & nephews. Lowell touched so many lives throughout his lifetime of 100 plus years that his spirit will live on in our hearts for many years to come. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Andrew's United Church, Rexton, NB on Wednesday, July 16th, 2008 at 2:00 PM, with Rev. Galen Smith and Rev. Dr. Winston Parks presiding. A time of fellowship will follow in the Church Hall to be followed by a private family burial in West Branch. As per Lowell's request, cremation has taken place and their will be no visiting at the funeral home. Prior to the Memorial Service, Lodge St. Andrew, No. 16, will hold a Masonic Service at St. Andrew's Church at 1:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to St. Andrew's or St. John's Churches. A Sincere Thank You to the doctors and nurses at Stella Maris Hospital for their loving, professional care so freely given to Lowell during his weeks in their midst. Desaulniers, Brian Lucien Joseph 2008-07-15 Desaulniers, Brian Lucien Joseph January 1, 1954 - July 10, 2008 It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Brian Lucien Joseph Desaulniers announces his passing on Thursday, July 10, 2008. Brian was born on January 1, 1954 and was the first baby born on a New Year’s Day in the new town of Terrace Bay, Ontario. Brian grew up in Terrace Bay, later leaving for employment in Sault Ste. Marie, Manitouwadge and Thunder Bay. While working for the pipeline and providing comfort and first aid to a critically injured fellow employee, Brian himself suffered serious injuries. Brian then spent the rest of his life disabled. He was active in the Disabled Workers Complex Case Network supporting the rights of injured workers and spending many hours helping those in need. Brian was a very generous man. Brian’s strong and courageous character was evident as he led an amazing active life. He rebuilt automobiles, changed transmissions, educated himself on how to build and repair computers, plowed snow and operated all-terrain vehicles. Brian’s current project was renovating a home in the country. Brian insisted on maintaining an active lifestyle regardless of the toll on his health. An avid hockey fan, he was a fixture at the Gardens for all the hockey games. Brian traveled to Edmonton to watch an open air NHL hockey game in -30C weather. Brian had a great love of the outdoors and was always looking for new ways which would allow him access to the wilderness. Brian will be lovingly remembered by his son Shawn (Qian); daughter Christine and her children Savannah and Nathan Varga; daughter Ashley Laviviere, Alana Laviviere; father Joseph; sisters Antoinette (Pierre), Dawn (Theo), Lorrelie (Mike); brothers Trent (Johanne), Jim (Narci). Brian is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Brian was predeceased by his mother Lorrain, brother "Little Joe" and grandparents Ruben and Adelia Johnson; Christopher and Brigitte Desaulniers. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, July 17, 2007 from 7 - 9 p.m. at Jenkens Funeral Home. A memorial service for Mr. Brian Desaulniers will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2008 at the Thunder Bay Free Methodist Church.
