MACKAY, Joan Joan passed away at home in Ottawa on Monday, July 14, 2008 at 78 years of age, after a long struggle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Beloved wife and best friend of John Mackay for over 60 years and mother of Alyson McLean (David) and Anne St. Dennis, Joan doted on and adored her grandchildren, Scott and Lindsay McLean, and Cameron and Lesley St. Dennis. Joan will be sorely missed by her family and friends, and in particular her fellow lawn bowlers at the Oak Bay Lawn Club in Victoria, BC. She was also, up until a few years ago, a curling member of the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club. Joan loved and excelled at the competitive aspects of curling and lawn bowling and was also very active as an Executive Committee member at both clubs. Even more recently, in the last couple of years, she was a member of the Pacesetter Walking Club at Billings Bridge Shopping Centre. Joan also was a very proactive volunteer for many years with the Ottawa Health Department and was awarded a citation as a volunteer in 1999. At Joan's specific request, there will not be a Funeral or Memorial Service, but friends are invited to attend a Memorial Visitation at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street on Thursday, July 17th from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 pm. The family are indebted to the staff at CCAC and its selected delegated agencies and would also to express our sincere appreciation to Dr. Farncombe and Max at the Palliative Care and Outreach Program for their wonderful help and care. Karey-Anne, a Care For personal support worker, deserves special mention for her absolute dedication. CHENEY, CRAIG WILLIAM - Craig William Cheney, died July 13, 2008 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, Fredericton of colon cancer. Born in Toronto December 29, 1959. Survived by his wife, Janice Wright Cheney; sons, Thomas and David; mother, Joy Cheney; sister, Dixie Cecile (Robin); sister-in-law, Joanne Wright (Donald Wright) and father-in-law, Eric Wright (Anne Reynolds). Devoted uncle to Harriet and Frances, Tara, Ryan and Jordan. Predeceased by his father, Kenneth Cheney. Craig will be fondly remembered by extended family, business associates, and a wide circle of close friends. PIERCY, DONALD GORDON (1930-2008) With deep sadness the family announces the passing of Gordon on July 13, 2008 at the Harvey Community Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Born August 2, 1930, son of the late Gates and Annie (Messer) Piercy. Gordon was a member of the Knox Presbyterian Church where he served on the Board of Managers for several years. He was a past member of the LOL and the Harvey Bowling League. He worked for a time for the CPR as well as construction. Gordon operated the family farm and was an avid woodsman, working for E & D Construction for many years, where he got his nickname 'Pipe'. After he retired, he did some woodworking as a hobby and you can find his famous birdhouses across Canada, in Boston and San Francisco. Gordon loved visiting with his friends and neighbours. His special time was when the children and grandchildren were coming home for the weekend. The family will receive visitors on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 as his home, 708 Tweedside Road, Harvey from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service will take place on Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at Knox Presbyterian Church, 2412 Route 3, Harvey at 3 p.m. with Rev. Bonnie Wynn officiating. Interment in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. SOEHNLEIN, Peter November 16, 1934 - July 10, 2008 Peter Soehnlein passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, July 10, 2008 at the age of 73 years. Peter immigrated to Canada with his wife Hilda in 1956. He spent many years working for ATCO Industries. Elsie was born in Skaro, AB. She enjoyed being a housewife as well as gardening and baking. She also loved cooking, but her largest passion was looking after her family. LINDSTROM, IVY 2008-07-15 LINDSTROM, IVY Mrs. Ivy Lindstrom (Bengtson) age 90 passed away peacefully on Monday, July 14, 2008 at Roseview Manor. Ivy was born in the station house in Ellis Ontario on March 4, 1918. She spent 44 years married to George Lindstrom, who predeceased her on November 28, 1984. Ivy and George built their family home on Kenogami Ave in 1947, where Ivy lived until she was hospitalized in January 2007. Ivy will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by her son Bertil Lindstrom (Beth), her step grandson Michael Holmes (Sharon), her sister Fern Kourula, nephews Wayne Kourula (Bonnie), Rod Waisanen (Sue), Dale Trelinski (Josée), Nieces Theresa Altman (Norbert), Karin Kellar (Lorne), Darlene Trelinski (Randal) and numerous great nieces and nephews. Ivy was predeceased by her parents Walter and Theresia Bengtson, her husband George Lindstrom, and infant daughter in 1941 and her sisters Palmie Waisanen and Ruby Trelinski. UNRUH, Theodore "Ted" 2008-07-15 June 21, 1928 to July 11, 2008 Our husband, dad, and grandpa Ted Unruh, age 80 years, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 11, 2008 with his loved ones by his side. Ted was born on June 21, 1928 in Saskatoon, SK to Cornelius and Tena Unruh and was raised in Medstead, SK. Dad moved east, when he was only sixteen, to the mines of Quebec and then started working his way back west until he hit Sudbury. There he met and later married our mom Jeanne (Husereau) Unruh. Dad worked in Sudbury until the fall of 1964, when he took a transfer with the Ministry of Transport to Fort William, Ontario. He worked for the MTO for 12 years, moving over to the City of Thunder Bay until retirement in 1993. After retirement he worked for McKevitt Trucking in the driver training and licencing division. He could be found at any one of the Tim Horton‘s for early coffee with the boys. Dad loved to fish and travel, only stopping when health took a toll on him. Ted will be missed by his loving wife of 57 years, Jeanne; his children: Tena (Terry) Smith, Carol (Lawrence) Perrier, TJ Unruh (Eileen Izzard), and Jeff Unruh; his grandchildren: David, Rebecca, Jessica, Adam, Mandy, Tonya, Kyle, Sarah, Terrance, Colleen, and David; brothers Irvin (Maggie) and Reuben (Mary); and sister Verna. Many nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. Ted was predeceased by his mother Tena (1939), father Cornelius (1966), and his son Brian (1970). Funeral Services for the late Theodore Unruh will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16, 2008 in Calvary Lutheran Church with Pastor John Schmidt officiating. PROKOP (Calonego), Sylvia 2008-07-15 SYLVIA (CALONEGO) PROKOP Mrs. Sylvia (Calonego) Prokop, age 74, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Monday, July 14, 2008 at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. Born in Fort William, she spent her early years in Westfort and attended St. Martin‘s School. In her late teens, she started work for Dominion Motors. In 1958, she married Robert Prokop and they moved to Vickers Heights where they raised their family and operated Prokop & Sons Trucking for over 35 years. Sylvia‘s main interests included her family, friends and church. She was especially fond of her grandchildren, Ryan, Stephanie, Taylor and of course “Jake”. Her home, in particular, Seeba‘s kitchen was always open for everyone. She loved to garden and to spend hours with “the gang” and with her card club. In all of these settings, she was known for her classic one-liners. As a woman of deep faith, she attended daily mass at Holy Family Church and St. Anne‘s Mission Church. She was also a member of the CWL of Holy Family Church. Sylvia is survived by her son, George (Edmonton), his children Ryan, Stephanie (Calgary) and Taylor; her son, Gary; and her daughter, Donna Shulman and her husband Willie, along with their four legged son “Jake”. Numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews also survive. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert, parents Joe and Stella, brothers Ugo and Kenny, sister Gilda and husband John Giardetti and nephew Russell. Cremation has taken place and Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, July 17, 2008 in the Holy Family Church on Rosslyn Road at 11:00 a.m. celebrated by Rev. Rey Ronquillo. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. The family request that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation (Cardiac Fund), the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of your choice. A tree will be planted in memory of Sylvia Prokop in the Blake Funeral Chapel Memorial Grove. Annual dedication service Sunday, June 28, 2009.

HILL, Moira Corrine (nee Moore) January 12, 1951 - July 10, 2008 Moira Corrine Hill, beloved wife of Timothy (Tim) of Calgary, passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2008 at the age of 57 years. She left us peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer. At her passing, she was surrounded by her immediate family. Everyone who knew her always mentioned her beautiful smile and caring ways. Moira's greatest desires were to be a loving wife, mother and grandmother and dedicating herself to the support of her family and friends, all tasks which she excelled in. Moira was born and raised in Glenboro, MB, attended Red River Community College taking Secretarial Science in Winnipeg, MB, and eventually moved to Calgary where she met and married Tim in 1978, before settling in Cochrane to raise their three children, Graham, Daniel and Julie. In 1993, the family moved to Brentwood Bay, BC, spending the next thirteen years enjoying life on Vancouver Island and experiencing the West Coast. During this time, Moira worked at the University of Victoria in two different research centres, The Centre on Aging and most recently the Centre for Studies in Religion and Society. In 2006, Moira and Tim returned to Calgary to be reunited with their children and beloved grandson Lucas, who was the pride and joy of Moira's life. Besides her loving husband Tim, Moira is also survived by her son, Graham, son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Hannah, and daughter Julie; grandson Lucas; sister Karen Martin (nee Moore); niece Cindy; and nephew Chris, all of Calgary. Moira will also be remembered by many of her extended family, friends and colleagues throughout western Canada. Moira was predeceased by her mother Ellen Moore (nee Beatty) in 1978; father Daniel Moore in 2001; and stepmother Helen Moore (nee Penner) in 2004. SMITH, Eustace William (Bill) November 21, 1925 - July 13, 2008 E. William Smith (Bill), beloved husband of Jean Burnice Smith, passed away peacefully at the age 82 years. Bill was born and raised in Montreal. At age seventeen he volunteered to join the Royal Canadian Navy and served aboard the HMCS Hallowell as a wireless telegraphist on convoy escort and antisubmarine patrols in the North Atlantic during WWII. While in port at Halifax in 1945, he met a young WREN named Jean Wright at a picnic. They married in 1951 after Bill graduated from McGill University with a degree in Civil Engineering. Together Bill and Jean raised seven children. Throughout those busy years, Bill worked for Shawinigan Water and Power in Quebec; Stone and Webster Consulting in New York City; then moved to Calgary in 1966 to work for Calgary Power (now TransAlta Corp). He retired as Vice President Customer Service in 1985. Among his volunteer positions, Bill was Chairperson of Calgary Hire-a-Student; a Board member of the Northwest Electric Light and Power Association (NELPA); Committee Chairman of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce; and served as Vice President and then President of the Alberta Chamber of Commerce 1985 to 1986. Bill really enjoyed camping and travelling with his family. A source of great joy was the time at their cabin on Flathead Lake in Montana, where he spent many hours sailing. At the age of sixty-nine years, Bill began a second career as a gentleman rancher raising cattle on a property near Sundre, Alberta. Bill is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Jean, and their seven children; Susan, Sandra Schorr (Barry), Stuart (Su), Sheena van Dyk (Bart), Stephen (Ann), Scott (Debbie), Stan (Wendy), as well as eighteen grandchildren. A Memorial Service to honour Bill's life will be held at the Southern Alberta Pioneers Memorial Building (3625 - 4 Street S.W. - access from Mission Road) on Friday, July 18, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded to the family through www.commemorativeservices.ca .
