HEGGIE, Dr. Robert (Bob) Murray B.Sc., Ph.D., FRIC, MCIC (1927-2008) Passed away with dignity at the age of 81 on Sunday, July 13, 2008, after a brief illness. Beloved husband of 57 years to Norah and loved father of Sheila (Jean-Claude Ouellette), Murray (Pat Gorham) of Halifax, Caroline (Arlen Bonesky) of New Westminster and Robert (Jody) of Calgary. Cherished grandfather of Jean-Robert; Alexander and Clare; Alicea and David; and Kelsey and Jamie. After obtaining a Ph.D. in chemistry from Glasgow University, Bob and his wife Norah emigrated to Canada in 1951 as Bob had accepted a postdoctoral fellowship with the National Research Council in Ottawa. Bob accepted two other research fellowships before joining the Defence Research Board in 1955. During his career of 35 years with the Defence Research Board, Bob was the Chief of the Defence Research Establishments in Suffield, Downsview and Shirley's Bay as well as the Associate Chief of Research and Development at Headquarters in Ottawa. After retirement, Bob devoted his time to his gardens at home and the cottage at Blue Sea Lake and planning travels across Canada and the United States as well as to New Zealand, Norway, Scotland and on the Danube River. Visitation will be held at the Hulse, Playfair and McGarry Funeral Home, 315 McLeod Street on Thursday from 7 to 9 pm and Friday from 10:30 to 11:30 am followed by a memorial service celebrating Bob's life in the chapel at 11:30 am. THOMPSON, Christina "Joyce" After a lengthy illness Joyce passed away peacefully on Saturday July 12, 2008 leaving the light of her life, soulmate and husband of 59 years Robert Earl Thompson. CLAVEL, Roger - Passed away in St. Anne's Veterans Hospital on July 12, 2008, at the age of eighty-nine years. He was the cherished husband of Eve; loving father of Al, Annette (Paul), Linda (Paul), Phil (Viviane), Debbie (Chris), Bruce (Kathy) and Bob; proud grandfather of Jimmy, Lori, Christine, Donna, Christopher, Dennis, Brook, Meghan, Ben, Zach, Brody and Madison; and great-grandfather of Melissa, Kathleen, Cory, Ryan and Alex. Roger was a proud WWII veteran serving with the Royal 22nd Regiment. GOULET, Dorothy Passed peacefully July 12, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer. KERBER, Henry Roy March 22, 1918 - July 12, 2008 It is with deep sadness the family of Henry Roy Kerber announces his passing at the Rockyview General Hospital in Calgary on July 12, 2008. Henry was born in Lacombe, Alberta and then moved to the Turner Valley District in 1929. Henry was enlisted in the service from 1941 until 1946. He is survived by his six siblings: Bill of Drayton Valley, Merle and Dave of Calgary, Violet Madsen of Okotoks, Ilene McKinnley and Dorthy Swanston both of California. He is predeceased by his mother Margaret, father William, brothers Russell, Victor, Lawrence, Vernon, Joe, Carl and one sister Vera. LAPOINTE, Kenneth Edward September 9, 1934 - July 12, 2008 Peacefully, with his family by his side and after a long and courageous battle with cancer, Ken Lapointe, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away on Saturday, July 12, 2008 at the age of 73 years. Ken will always be loved and remembered by his wife of fifty-three years, Clara; his daughters Lori and son-in-law John, Debbie and son-in-law Richard; his son Kenneth and daughter-in-law Roxanne; his grandchildren Michael Stewart (Brandee), Brett McNabb (Krista), Craig Stewart, Rob Stewart (Krista), Scott McNabb (Lindsay), April and Cody Lapointe; his great-grandchildren Michael, Taryn and Deija and friends and family throughout Alberta and Manitoba. He is also survived by his sister Linda Meyers of Winnipeg, MB and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Ken was predeceased by his parents Ida and Narcisse (Dutch) Lapointe of St. Claude, MB; his sister Theresa Howson and brother-in-law Leo Howson of Winnipeg, MB. Ken served in the Canadian Armed Forces from 1955 to 1975, thereafter with Alberta Brewers and BDL until his retirement in 1995. He was a member of Calgary's Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 264, for many years. Ken will be remembered as a man of honour and dignity with a winning smile, a heart of gold and a fierce love of family. He will be sorely missed. LEIGHTON, Janet Swanston (nee Stevenson) November 22, 1906 - July 11, 2008 In the early morning of July 11, 2008, Janet (known to family and friends as Jess) peacefully passed away in the company of loved ones at Bow View Manor in Calgary. Jess was born on November 22, 1906 near Falkirk, Scotland to Robert and Janet Stevenson, the eldest child in a family of five children. In 1923, Jess immigrated with her father to Canada, settling in rural southern Alberta. Shortly thereafter they were joined by her mother, brothers, Robert and Steve; and sisters, Ella and Jean. Jess later took a job in Calgary where she met the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Leighton, and they married in 1926. Together they had four children, Jean, Margaret, Robert (Joanne), and Janet (Fred). A devoted parent, Jess accompanied her husband throughout western Canada on his postings with the CPR, experiencing a happy and fruitful life in many prairie locales across British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. In Wetaskiwin, AB, Jess became Worthy Matron of the local chapter of the Society of the Eastern Star. Bob and Jess retired in Calgary, where they enjoyed the company of family and many friends. Bob predeceased Jess in 1974, as did their daughter Jean in 1973. At the age of ninety-five years, Jess took her final trip home to her beloved Scotland. In 2006, she celebrated her one-hundreth birthday in Calgary in true Scottish fashion, surrounded by her extended family. Jess is survived by Gerald Stevenson, three children, eleven grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Jess' vivacious spirit, strength of character, and dedication to family shone to those who knew her. "Jess, Mom, Grandma, and Nana we'll miss you and you will always be in our hearts." TORODE, Elizabeth (Betty) Walker (nee Roberts) July 13, 1927 - July 13, 2008 Betty Torode passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 13, 2008 at the age of 81 years. Betty was born in Ardrossan, Scotland and later moved to Montreal, QC and settled in Calgary. She married the love of her life, Art and joined "oil wives". Fifty years later she has many wonderful friends. A long-lasting source of pleasure for Betty was her many "bridge pals". Their home was always open to friends and family and their perfect spot on the lake was a great source of pride and pleasure. Betty's love of friendship, love of children, and hospitality will be missed by all those she touched. Betty will be happily remembered by children, John (Cassie Campbell), Gayle (Richard) White, and Debra; brother John (Barb) Roberts; sister Irene Miller; and brother-in-law Frank (Yolande). CLARKE, David “Tait“ Elliott - At Parkwood Hospital in London on Monday, July 14, 2008, Tait died at the age of 89. Beloved husband of Ilene. Loving father of David Clarke and his wife Jo-Anne, Edmonton, Louise & her husband Jim Blumer, Brantford and Susan, Hastings. ZOBATAR, Robert (Rob) Harold 2008-07-15 August 28, 1950 ~ July 11, 2008 Mr. Robert (Rob) Zobatar, age 57 years of Queen‘s Road, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, July 10, 2008. Rob was born in Port Arthur on August 28, 1950, the eldest of five siblings. He attended Shuniah and C.D. Howe Public Schools and graduated from Hammerskjold High School. He worked for the MNR in Ignace, apprenticed and earned his “ticket” as a Heavy Machinery Mechanic. Rob was employed by (then known as) Great Lakes Paper, Woodlands Division as a Heavy Machinery Mechanic. He later he started his own business as an independent truck owner/operator, contracting his services of hauling saw-logs and pulpwood for local forestry companies. Rob loved tending to the hayfields at the farm as well as his love for his truck, and he particularly enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow truckers. He enjoyed all the trips south watching his brother-in-law, Tom Nesbitt in dirt track racing, was an accomplished carpenter, member of the Ignace Legion, and when the children were young, Rob especially enjoyed taking them camping and fishing. Rob is survived by his wife Carolyn Anderson, his children: Robert, Christopher, Jodi and their mother Georgette; grandchildren: Kyra and Braedon; parents Mel and Joyce Zobatar; siblings: Brent (Joanne), Greg (Annamarie), Tracey (Robert) Slater, Krista (Carl) Tallon; and sister-in-law Darlene (Tom) Nesbitt. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service for the late Robert Zobatar will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 17th, 2008 in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, officiated by Rev. Lloyd Ivany. Ashes to be scattered on the O‘Connor Farm on Friday, July 18, 2008 after 6 p.m., everyone welcome. Visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to the time of Service. GRAVES, Agnes Margaret 2008-07-15 Agnes passed away July 10, 2008 at St. Joseph‘s Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Her family was by her side. She was born on July 21, 1925 in Fort William to Margaret and George Graves. Agnes was born and lived in Westfort for her entire life. She enjoyed riding the bus and walking throughout Thunder Bay. Educated at Heath Park School and FWCI, she was employed as an accountant with various local firms, most notably Blacks Accounting and ending with Alfred Petrone‘s law firm. Agnes will be lovingly remembered by her sister Doris (Arthur) Chepil, brother George (Lauretta) Graves; nieces/nephews: Sandy (Peter) Burkhardt, Artie Chepil (Elaine), Susan (Lloyd) Hanton, Lorie Buitenhuis (Brian), Darlene Chepil (Terry) Reid; grand nieces/nephews: Katie and Keith (Jacquie) Burkhardt; Jason Buitenhuis and Wendi (James) Cameron; Kyla, Mark and Drew Reid; Melody and Violet Chepil; great grandnieces/nephew: Caitlin and Jamie Cameron, Julia Burkhardt. Auntie Aggie was the family‘s most dedicated fan at numerous baseball/hockey games and music concerts. She never missed a graduation, performance or athletic event. Her hands were busy knitting, baking and praying for family and friends. Always an ardent reader, she enjoyed all the local libraries. Cremation has taken place. Shirley Scott, born in Lansing (Toronto), was the only child of Evelene Madill and Robert Clark Scott. Shirley died surrounded by her devoted family. Cherished Grandpa of Marc Barsanti (Angela Marrocco), Jennifer Inglis (Matthew), Ryan, Katie, and Robbie Barsanti, Amelia Murphy-Beaudoin, Eilish, Monica, Eamonn and Michael Murphy. Great-Grandpa of Mackenzie Inglis and Nicole Barsanti. Brother of Patricia Dinsdale (late Bob), the late Bill Murphy (Janet), Monica Pezzutto (Art) and Sally Zeppa (late Henry). Marie, Terry was the oldest son of Charlie and Monica Murphy of John Street. When he graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School at the age of 22, Terry became the youngest person in Ontario to be called to the Bar. He served a term as Alderman for the City of Sault Ste. Marie in 1965 and was elected to serve as the Liberal Federal Member of Parliament for the riding of Sault Ste. Marie from 1968 until 1972. During this time, he served on the Justice Committee and also chaired the North Atlantic Assembly, a post that required him to visit all the NATO countries. In 1980 he was appointed as a Judge for the District of Sudbury/Manitoulin, where he sat until his retirement in 2000. In 2005, Terry was honoured to be formally acknowledged by The Advocates' Society, in the book Learned Friends, as one of fifty of the finest advocates practicing in Ontario from 1950 to 2000, who exemplified the very highest standards of advocacy and shaped the legal profession in the province. Terry lived life well, with no regrets. He loved his family, music, good wine, good food, stimulating conversation, Dorothy's flower gardens, and the rugged beauty of Northern Ontario. MEMBRY, Kenneth George - Beloved friend, brother and uncle passed away at Versa Care Centre on July 9, 2008 in his 86th year.
