WASHUTA, Steve J. - Founder of Modern Corporations - Steve J. Washuta, age 75, of Youngstown, New York passed away Tuesday June 10th, 2008, in Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston, NY. Steve was born in Bruno, Saskatchewan Canada, on June 8, 1933. He was the son of Rinko and Anna Washuta and was one of eight children. He immigrated to the US in 1959 to work on the construction of the hydropower project for the New York State Power Authority in Lewiston, NY as an operating engineer. Steve began S. Washuta Paving and Trucking in 1960 which evolved into Modern Disposal in 1964, building a one truck operation into a multi-national organization. Under his leadership, the Modern Corporations, operating as 12 subsidiary companies, now employs over 700 people in the US and Canada. His achievements have been recognized by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and nationally for “Environmental Excellence” awards. He was a leader and a visionary working in the solid waste industry, accomplishing many firsts in environmental construction and holding national and international patents as a result of some of his innovative projects. Steve, a philanthropist, displayed enthusiasm for youth programs and teams throughout the years. Steve donated land to create Washuta Park on Model City Road. His generosity and love for his community provided support for countless local groups. As a member of the Board of Associates of Mount St. Mary's, Steve's decades of involvement included support of the cardiac care rehabilitation unit, the annual Hewitt Award Dinner for local athletic and academic excellence scholarship and coordinated many other fundraising events for the hospital. As a 45 year member of the Kiwanis, Steve, as Clam Bake Chairman, was instrumental in the current success of the annual event which raises money for Mount St. Mary's and Lewiston's D.A.R.E programs. He was awarded Life Time Membership recognition and received the Hickson Award from the Kiwanis International for exemplary service to the club. He received the Buster Lombardi Community Service Award recognizing his contributions to the area and the Kiwanis Presidential Service Award. His significant continuous donations of services to the Lewiston Kiwanis Peach Festival helped make that event the success it is today. Steve is also a lifetime member of the Lower Niagara Moose Lodge #584 and has supported many of their charitable efforts over the years. He has also supported Artpark, the Arthritis Foundation of Western New York, Lewiston Fire Company #1, Upper Mountain Fire Company, the Youngstown Recreational Department and the Village of Youngstown Veterans Park. Surviving is his wife Sonia, a son, Richard [Gail] Washuta, a daughter, Lorie [Richard Butts ] Washuta, his grandchildren, Joleigh, Colbie, Whitney and Broc Washuta, two brothers, John and Michael Washuta, both of St. Catharines, Ont. and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Raymond and Peter Washuta, and his sisters Annie Hnatiw, Mary Potashnyk and Alice Bilinski. The family will be present at the RHONEY FUNERAL HOME, Cayuga and So. Ninth Streets, from 2 to 8 PM FRIDAY. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 AM, at St. Peter's Church, 620 Center Street, followed by Entombment in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery Mausoleum. SCANLON, Cecelia, Marie - Passed away peacefully at the North Bay General Hospital on June 10th, 2008 in her 88th year. Marie was the devoted and cherished mother of Gail (Bryan) and Elizabeth (John). Treasured grandmother of Lisa (Dave), Megan and Mike and great-grandmother of Jessica and Matthew. She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Robert, her daughter Lee (Barry) and son Michael (Sue). Following retirement from her teaching career in both primary and special education, Marie and Robert enjoyed extensive travel throughout North America, Europe and the British Isles. Family gatherings were especially important. She will be sorely missed by her sister Mae and lifelong friends in B.C. STACH, Gisela Antonie (nee Wiegandt) Passed away peacefully at the Brantford General Hospital on Wednesday, June 11th, 2008 in her 83rd year. Beloved wife of the late George Stach (2005). McCOY, David Alexander May 11, 1943 - June 7, 2008 David Alexander McCoy passed away on Saturday, June 7, 2008 at the age of 65 years. David immigrated to Canada from N. Ireland in 1967 with his wife, Jane. He completed his undergraduate degree in Agriculture at the University of Alberta, winning the Faculty's gold medal, and went on to obtain an MSc., graduating in 1973. David began his career in Alberta's soil testing labs in Lethbridge, AB before moving to Kelowna, B.C. to take on the running of B.C.'s Ministry of Agriculture labs. In 1982 he returned to Alberta to work for Canterra Energy as a senior environmental scientist and made a smooth transition to Husky during its takeover of Canterra in 1988. David mentored many young environmental scientists by sharing his knowledge and his passion for good environmental management. He made many positive contributions to environmental issues in Alberta, and as a result, leaves the province a better place. He was still working as senior environmental scientist for Husky at the time of his death. David was a warm, compassionate and unconventional man with a keen Irish wit and had a talent for making friends wherever he went. Although he was highly regarded by his peers as an expert in his field he was modest to a fault, and his generosity of spirit governed his relationships with friends and colleagues alike. He had a great love of all things Irish, of literature, soccer, music, Donegal tweed caps (of which he had a great many) and cats. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him, most especially by his beloved son John and John's mother Jane; his brother Mitchell and sister Moira; and by his friend and companion Christine Macken and her son Alexander, of whom David was very fond. JAMES EDWIN JOSEPH BARR of Burriss, Ontario passed away suddenly at his home on Tuesday, June 10, 2008. Jim was born on January 23, 1932 in Devlin, Ontario. He lived almost his entire life in Burriss Township. Jim was united in marriage to Greta Berg on June 7, 1958. Jim was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. He worked for the local pulp and paper mill for 39 years until his retirement in 1991. Jim was an avid sports fan and particularly enjoyed curling, baseball and hockey. He lived his life believing that if something needed doing, he could do it himself. He was a jack-of-all-trades; never afraid to tackle any project from overhauling a tractor engine to building his own house. He was happiest working around home, whether it was cutting wood or getting the hay baled and stacked. As his hobby farming began to subside, he committed his efforts to completing tasks at his church. His work ethic, fi erce independence, integrity and compassion were second to none. Jim was a long time member of the Canadian Foresters and an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 29 and Guthrie United Church in Devlin. Jim was predeceased by his parents, Edwin and Florence Barr; brother Ron; sisters-in-law Leona and Violet Barr; son-in-law Russ King. He is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Greta, of Burriss; sons, Tony (Stuart) and Terry of Winnipeg; daughters Leslie Barr-Kellar (Ron) and Diana King of Fort Frances; grandsons Ben King, Nick and Jared Kellar. He is also survived by his sister Alice Holborn (Bill) of Atitkokan and brothers Bob (Jean) and Len of British Columbia. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2008 at 11 am at the Guthrie United Church in Devlin with Reverend Frances Flook offi ciating; a luncheon will follow at the Devlin Community Hall. Georges Desrochers 1926 - 2008 À l'Hôpital de l'Enfant-Jésus, Québec, le 5 juin 2008, s'est doucement éteint monsieur Georges Desrochers, époux de dame Marie Parent. Il était le fils de feu M. Joseph-Henri Desrochers et de feu dame Octavie Bégin. Peu avant son décès, il nous disait : «Je n'ai pas peur de la mort mais cela m'attriste de causer de la peine à ceux que j'aime ». En plus de son épouse adorée, il laisse également dans le deuil ses enfants: Denis (Marilyne Racine), Diane (Jean-Claude Pilon); son petit trésor Jade; ses frères, soeurs, beaux-frères et belles-soeurs ainsi que de nombreux parents et ami(e)s. Il fut un professeur dévoué auprès de ses élèves et apprécié de tous ses collègues. Daughter of the late John and Winnifred (nee Mills) Wright of West St. Andrews, NS. Raised by her late Uncle Locke Lively and late Aunt Melinda of Shubenacadie, NS. Mourned by surviving half-sisters Alice Wood of Maple Ridge, BC and Doris Barr of Stellarton, NS. Missed by cousin Helen O'Neil of Truro, NS. Also mourned by niece Patricia Anne Coulter, and nephew William Randall Coulter with his wife Karen and children Ryan and Katelyn, all of Toronto. MATHESON, Nina Venita (nee MacMillan). Hemmingford. Passed away aged seventy-seven at the West Island Palliative Care facility in Kirkland, Quebec, early Wednesday morning, June 11, 2008. Born on February 1, 1931 on Pictou Island, Nova Scotia, Nina is survived by her husband Fraser, their children Susan (Tony Brain) and Lorne (Heather Mullin); by their grandchildren Colin, Martin, David, Gabrielle, and Adelaide; and by her sister Ethel and sisters-in-law Catherine, Lorraine, and Marge. Plus many, many nieces and nephews. Nina was predeceased by her siblings: Hughena, John, Hilda, Rita, Verna, Arnold, Charlie, and Lorne. Nina met Fraser when she came to the mainland to work at Imperial Optical in New Glasgow. They moved to North Sydney just before Susan was born and then emigrated to Knowlton, Quebec where Lorne was born. In 1959 they settled in Hemmingford, Quebec where they lived and loved for 49 wonderful years. Nina will be remembered fondly by her bridge club, her UCW mates, and all the people whose lives she touched throughout the years. Her kind spirit, her uncanny ability to remember every birthday, her impeccable social graces, and her wonderful cookies will be missed by everyone. Respects may be paid at J.M. Sharpe Funeral Home on Friday, June 13 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. with funeral service at St. Andrews United Church on Saturday, June 14 at 2 p.m. (Both in Hemmingford). MAYNE, William (Bill) Thomas Clifford - At the Blind River District Health Centre, Palliative Car Unit, June 8, 2008, after a courageous and lengthy battle against cancer. Bill was born in Stratford, Ont. July 30, 1938. Beloved father of William David Mayne (Jane), grandfather of Makayla, and good friend to Karen Mayne. Dearly loved by sisters, Barb (Bob) Buchanan of Stratford and Mary (Rod) McDowell of Ottawa. He will be greatly missed by nephews Patrick (Nicky) and Jim (Elana) and nieces Tracy (Dino), Beth, Cathie (Simon) as well as great nephews Shaun, Sam and Spencer and great nieces, Bailie, Kyla and Etta, and numerous cousins. Predeceased by parents, Mary and Ed Mayne (Stratford). Retired O.P.P. Constable Mayne joined the O.P.P. Blind River Detachment 1962 and devoted his life to the community, retiring in 1992. Bill was also active in the community as an Air Cadet Instructor, was a charter member of Ontario Chapter X of Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club; as a computer technical assistant he helped to establish the Penokean Hills Field Naturalists' web site; and was a member of the Blind River Horticultural Society. Funeral service will be held on Friday, June 13, 2008 at 11:00 am from St. Andrew's United Church, Blind River, with Rev. Norine St. Jean officiating. A Memorial Service will be held in Stratford, ON and will be followed by internment in the Avondale Cemetery. Gratitude beyond words go to Bill and Lina Thompson and Shiela and Dave Manninger for all their acts of loving friendship to Bill over the years and in the particular throughout his long illness. To the many other friends in Blind River and the area who so faithfully visited Bill during his hospitalization and who also embraced Barb and Mary in friendship, heartfelt thanks is extended. The quality of Bill's final months of life was enhanced by the tremendously supportive, compassionate, and caring staff of the Blind River District Health Centre Palliative Care Unit. Special thanks go to Dr. Mary Shamas and an extra special hug and thanks to Dr. Mark Fowler whose friendship, guidance, and total care deeply touched Bill and his sisters.
