HEGAN, Roger Stayner March 15, 1949 - June 7, 2008 Roger Hegan passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 7, 2008 at the Southwood Hospice in the presence and warmth of his family. Roger is lovingly remembered by his dear wife Diane; four children, Jeff, Nancy Denomme (Jeff), Courtney and Ricky, all of Calgary. He will be equally missed by his brothers and sister, Dick (Mary), Mary Halpen (Terry), Jim (Pats), Tom (Suzanne), and a large circle of close and loyal friends. Born in Regina, Saskatchewan on March 15, 1949, Roger was raised in both Lethbridge, Alberta and the city of Calgary which became home for most of his adult life. After graduating from the University of Western Ontario, Roger combined dedication to a growing family with a number of highly responsible positions in business life. He was widely respected as an accomplished athlete, outdoorsman and raconteur. Throughout his life, Roger's trademark sense of humour and lightening wit had a lasting effect on all those who met him and his memory will most certainly be a lasting one. CULLEN (Astley), Marjorie Hilda - Peacefully at Sharbot Lake Seniors Residence after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Marjorie H. (nee MacMillan) in her 88th year, beloved wife of the late Norman E. Cullen, and the late Ernest C. Astley. Loving mother to Mimi Antoine (Don), Robert Astley (Frances) and Heather Murray (Paul). Born at Saint John, she was a daughter of Jerome Joseph and Marie Augusta (Cripps) Richard. In addition to her parents, Bonnie is survived by her companion, Kier Adams; her son, K. Jody Richard (Jenny Lambert); her daughters, Krista D. Richard (Nick Kennedy) and Katie Richard (Jason Sharkey); two brothers, Wayne (Cindy) and Trevor (Shawna); a sister, Cathy (Rick Michaelson), all of Saint John; two grandchildren, Benjamin and Merrisa Richard; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Bonnie was predeceased by an infant daughter, Stacy Lynn Richard. Born in Big Cove, he was the son of the late Isaac Clement and the late Josephine (Watson) Clement. Jospeh is survived by a brother, Frank Clement; and many nieces and nephews. WILSON, Margaret Frances (Meg) - It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Meg, at Bella Senior Care Residence in Chippawa on Sunday, June 8, 2008 at the age of 81 years. Predeceased by her beloved husband Ian (2007), loving mother of Christopher (Brenda), Barb (Rick) Conners, four loving granddaughters Heather, Jill, Sarah and Rachel, sister of Nonie and Jean (England). Meg stayed at home with the children while Ian was in the Armed Forces for many years. She also worked part time as an independent salesperson in southern Ontario. She was a member of the St. Catharines General Hospital Auxiliary, was involved with the Altar Guild and was President of the ACW (Christ Church). At Meg's request there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A Service of Remembrance will be held on Friday, June 13, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Transfiguration, 320 Glenridge Avenue. This remarkable woman, who's strength, determination and passion was the longest surviving renal patient at the Plummer Renal Clinic (7 1/2 years). RAPPELL, Lynne Anne Mary Lynne Anne Mary Rappell was born August 15, 1943, in Montreal, Quebec, the only daughter of Thomas Jefferson Rappell and Elizabeth Lorraine Rappell. Lynne spent her early years in Montreal with fond memories of summers spent in Ste. Agathe des Monts and winters spent skiing in the Mont Tremblant area. Lynne earned a B.A. from Marianopolis College and later a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Calgary. In 1971, after traveling in Europe and working in a variety of administrative positions in Eastern Canada, Lynne moved to Calgary where she immersed herself in her two passions: skiing and hiking in her beloved Rocky Mountains. Lynne was a long-time active member of the Calgary Ski Club, the Norseman Ski Club, and the Weekenders Hiking Club and was a keen volunteer for the Calgary Winter Games in 1988. As a devotee of the arts, Lynne participated in several choral groups, most recently in the PetroCan Choir. She was a member of the Calgary Opera Club. Lynne also volunteered tirelessly for the Alberta Liberal Party, particularly for her constituency of Calgary Currie. Lynne died peacefully on Sunday, June 8, 2008 at the Tom Baker Centre after a stoic battle with cancer. Her wit and winning smile and enthusiasm for life will be sorely missed. Lynne is survived by her two brothers: Carson and Paul Rappell of Montreal and Kingston respectively, as well as her two nephews, Christopher Rappell of Ottawa and Jefferson Rappell of Vancouver. A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at Sacred Heart Church, 1307 - 14 Street S.W. at 2:00 p.m., followed by a celebration of Lynne's life at the Cliff Bungalow Community Centre, 2201 Cliff Street S.W. GRAHAM, Douglas Percy (Doug) 2008-06-10 1933 – 2008 With great sadness we say good-bye to a dear man, Doug, who peacefully passed away, on Thursday, June 5, 2008 at the age of 75 years. Remaining to forever cherish Doug’s memory are his wife Natalie (Osipenko) of 54 years of marriage; sons Gordon and Jamie (Lori) ; granddaughter Taylor whom‘s presence always brought a smile to his face: Sisters Elsie, Margie, Norah, Cheryl; brothers Donny, Tommy, Earle , as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his father Charlie and mother Edna (Code). Originally from Thunder Bay, Ont. Doug had many interests, baseball, scuba diving, travel, and his two biggest were hockey and golf. He had played junior hockey for the Fort William Hurricanes and in the old timer league until he was 55. He was an active member of Southwood Golf & C.C. as well as Niakwa Golf & C.C. Doug’s business career started in 1952 with Canada Safeway and after 22.5 years he left and started his own food brokerage Mid-Way Brokers in 1975 (later becoming Pennicker’s Food Dist.) and was proud of the fact he had been in the food business for over 50 years. A man with integrity and honesty that lived for his family, Doug was always the one to turn to for help, advice, friendship and love. Doug’s funeral service will be held on Saturday June 14 at 10:30 a.m. in the Silver Heights United Church, 199 Garrioch Avenue (at the corner of Mount Royal Road and Ness Avenue). For those who wish, additional parking will be available in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church parking lot located on Ness Avenue. The family would like to sincerely thank the doctors, nurses and staff that work at Victoria General Hospital on the 5th floor. These fine people were so kind and caring to Doug and our family in the last stages of Doug‘s life. Lamer Laurent Dr 1931 - 2008 Le docteur Laurent Lamer est décédé paisiblement à l’hôpital Notre-Dame après une longue lutte contre la maladie. Le docteur Lamer a œuvré pendant plus de quarante ans au département d’ophtalmologie de l’hôpital Notre-Dame et à la faculté de médecine de l’Université de Montréal. Durant sa longue carrière, le docteur Lamer a non seulement traité de nombreux patients, il a été l’un des pionniers canadiens de l’utilisation du laser en traitement de la rétine et de l’utilisation de l’ultrason oculaire comme outil diagnostique. En reconnaissance de ses nombreuses contributions à la médecine, le Docteur Lamer a été honoré par le département d’ophtalmologie et la faculté de médecine de l’Université de Montréal qui lui ont octroyé une médaille de carrière. Il rejoint son épouse Céline April, décédée le 10 février 2002. Doreen Breau 1948 - 2008 Doreen Breau, 60, of Shediac, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Monday, June 9, 2008 at the Georges L. Dumont Hospital after a lengthy illness. Born in Cocagne on May 19th, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Aurèle Breau and Anita Breau (Bourque). WADDELL, David Bryson June 29, 1916 - June 8, 2008 A proud Canadian, brilliant research scientist, gifted athlete, and an enthusiastic coach and mentor, David Bryson Waddell died peacefully on June 8, 2008 in his 92nd year, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Survived by his devoted wife and partner, Barbara (nee Gowitzke) six nieces and nephews, Janet White, Judy (White) Killeen, Murray White, Joleen (Aldous) Gordon, Peter Aldous, and Don Aldous, and their families, as well as several second cousins, he will also be sadly missed by his many dear friends. Warm-hearted, and fun loving, David will be remembered as a true gentle man, and by some as a task master, who's work ethic was to 'play by the rules', whether that was the game of badminton or the game of life. A graduate of the University of British Columbia, where he earned both B.A. and M.A. Degrees, he also studied for the Ph.D. at the University of Toronto. This prepared him for his subsequent employment with Canada's Department of Agriculture, where he spent 30 years as an entomologist, researcher, administrator, and technical advisor in the Research Branch. David was an ardent badminton player and, in the course of his lifetime, occupied every conceivable organizational position at local, regional, provincial, and national levels, an achievement that often earned him the title "Mr. Badminton". He was co-author of extensive studies on the Biomechanics of Badminton Stroke Production and with his wife, known professionally as Dr. Barbara Gowitzke, presented many papers, workshops and clinics to scientists and coaches all over the world. He was particularity proud of his "Badminton Adapted For Children" program. When David wasn't occupied with the sport of badminton, he was busy organizing or assisting with other sports such as bowling, broomball, curling, golf, softball, sailing,nd tennis. He was a member of and occupied key positions in several non-profit organizations over his lifetime, including horticultural and non-smoking associations. He was a Vice-Commodore at the Britannia Yacht Club in Ottawa, a Life Member of the Ancaster Horticultural Society, and the International Society of Bio-mechanics in Sports, and was named Honourary Vice-President of the Ontario Badminton Association. He won many awards, including the Bob Maki Memorial Trophy for Ottawa Sportsman of the Year in 1972, the Meritorious Service Award from the International Badminton Federation in 1988, and was named Ancaster's Distinguished Citizen of the year in 2006. In addition, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Ottawa Recreation Association in 1992, and the Hall of Fame of the Ontario Badminton Association in 2000. We wish to thank his surgeon Dr. Leya Ruo, and the medical team at McMaster Hospital, the medical encology team at the Juravinski Cancer Centre, the Cancer Assistance Program, the Canadian Cancer Society, CCAC and the nursing staff at St. Joseph's Home Care especially Joanne, Judy at Para-Med, the staff and volunteers at the Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice and in particular, his family physician Dr. Kim McCallum. PHELAN, Thomas Gilbert (Gil) (Sr.) - (RMC, RCAF, Masonic Lodge, Shriners, Teaching Profession). On June 7, 2008, peacefully, surrounded by his devoted family, at Kingston General Hospital, Gil, beloved husband and best friend of Helen Doreen (Gray) Phelan for 51 years, passed away at Kingston General Hospital in his 77th year, following heart surgery. Predeceased by his son the late Thomas Gilbert Phelan Jr (who passed away suddenly on August 15, 2007). Gil was born on March 3, 1932 in Montreal, Quebec, the son of the late John and Eva (Garneau) Phelan; brother of Clifford John Phelan and the late Brenda Joanne Phelan of Montreal, Quebec. He will be lovingly remembered and wholeheartedly missed by his beloved wife Helen Doreen (Gray) Phelan along with his devoted children Luanne (Gordon); Daniel (Candy); Jennifer (Sean); cherished grandchildren Jeffrey (Allison); Teya (Devon); Stacey, Brock, Eric and Patrick. He will also be fondly remembered and missed by Ralph and Shirley (Gray) Powell, his brother-in-law and sister-in-law and their children: Chris (Barbara); Wendy (Luis); Bruce (Brenda) and their families; along with Marlene (Cota) Tremblay and her families. Gil attended St. Dominic's Separate School and D'Arcy McGee High School in Montreal, Quebec. He was a parishioner at St. Dominics Catholic Church where he was an altar boy. In his teen years he played football and hockey, and joined the Army Cadet Corps, as well as the Grenadier Guards' Militia Unit. He entered RMC in Sept. 1951 and specialized in Physics and Math, graduating in May 1956 and was granted a BSc Degree in 1961. While at RMC he continued with his hockey craze as a goalie for the junior and senior teams and at this time was nicknamed “Tony“. He was a Cadet Flight Leader in his final year at RMC. Summer RCAF navigational training took place in Summerside, PEI and Winnipeg, MB. On May 18, 1957 he married Helen Doreen Gray of Kingston, ON in St. Jame's Chapel, St. Mary's Cathedral, Kingston, ON. Military Career: RCAF from June 1956-July 1963. Courses: 1956-Winnipeg, MB, Air Observer, Airborne Interception; 1957-Cold Lake, AB, All- Weather Fighter School; Stationed: 1957-1958 at St. Hubert, Quebec as a navigator in CF100s with pilot Clyve Loubser. Remustered to Ground Crew in 1958 and went on Courses: June 1958-Mar. 1959 to Clinton, ON - Officers' Radar & Telecommunications, Tech/Arm. (Electronics Phase); Apr.-Sept. 1959-Camp Borden - Technical Armament Officers' Course; and then stationed back to Clinton, ON as an Instructor in the Armament Officers' Course from Oct. 1959-1961; stationed at Centralia, ON in Oct. 1961-July 1963 as an Instructor and Head of the Armament Officers' Course, along with being Base Armament Officer. In July 1963 he was honourably discharged from the RCAF and went into the high school teaching profession at Sydenham High School (SHS) in Sydenham, ON. He taught Physics, Math, etc., plus took courses and became Head of Guidance Dept., and was approached in 1967 to take the Principals' Course and became Vice-Principal of SHS from 1969-1976 (where the students nicknamed him “Little Rock“); he was transferred to Frontenac Secondary School (FSS) in Kingston as VP from 1976-1981; then on to Loyalist Collegiate and Vocational Institute (LCVI) in Kingston as VP from 1981-1985; and back to FSS as VP from 1985-1987 from where he retired in June 1987. After his retirement he worked part-time at Sears Canada Ltd. as a salesman for 3 nights a week so he could play golf in the mornings and rest in the afternoon. He enjoyed this for 7 years then decided to go to Queen's University and proctor exams, which he did for 7 years. Gil and Helen have been spending 5 months (Nov-Apr) in Florida in the home they purchased in 1976. Associations: Past-President, RMC Club of Canada, Kingston Ex-Cadet Branch; Past- Chairman, joined in 1982 Cooke's-Portsmouth United Church, Kingston, ON; Past-Master, The Ancient St. John's Masonic Lodge #3, Kingston, ON; Member - Shriners'-Tunis Temple, Ottawa, ON; and Thousand Island Shrine Club, Gananoque, ON. Athletics: Member in Kingston, ON of Garrison Golf and Curling Club; and Kingston Lawn Bowling Club; Past Member of The Royal Kingston Curling Club from where he became a certified member of the Eight-Enders Club of Scotland in 1991. Member in Florida of the Beacon Woods Bocce Club and the Beacon Woods Euchre Club. Golfing in Florida took place at various golf courses as often as possible. Cremation will take place prior to Gil's Memorial Service. Memorial Service in celebration of Gil's life will be held at Cooke's-Portsmouth United Church, 200 Norman Rogers Drive, Calvin Park, Kingston, ON on Friday, June 13, 2008 officiated by Rev. Terry Deline at 11:00 am, followed by interment at Cataraqui Cemetery, Kingston, ON. Following interment there will be a reception at Cooke's-Portsmouth Church Hall. MCCARTER, Gertrude (nee Robinson) - At her home on Sunday, June 8, 2008. Gertrude McCarter (nee Robinson) of Oil Springs. Gertrude was predecesed by her husband Melvin (1974), her sister Eva McCarter, and her brothers Russell, Arnold, and Harold Robinson. She is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was a member of the Oakdale United Church, the Oakdale U.C.W., Sydenham Rebekah Lodge #323 (Florence), and the Oakdale Women's Institute. There will be no funeral service. Her cremated remains will be buried with her husband in Alvinston Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made by cheque to the C.E.E. Hospital Foundation. SUKALO, Nikola 2008-06-10 Mr. Nikola “Nick” Sukalo, age 65 years of Thunder Bay, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 8, 2008. Nick came to Canada in May, 1966 and arrived in Port Arthur in the same year. He started his employment at Great West Timber that fall and retired after 41 years of service. He was happiest spending his time outdoors, gardening, fishing, and berry picking. He was a dedicated member of the St. George Serbian Hall and was also president for over 10 years. Nick was known for his extensive work ethic and highly noteable sense of humour, both at work, within the community, and at home. His family was his greatest source of pride. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Dusanka Sukalo; son, Mile Sukalo; and his daughter, Vesna Sukalo. Funeral services for Nick Sukalo will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 13th, 2008 in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre presided by the Very Reverend Jaroslaw Buciora of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. Volodymyr. Interment to follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday evening, June 12th, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with Prayers at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street.

HILL, Russell Ernest February 2, 1925 - June 8, 2008 Russell Hill, beloved husband of Doreen, passed away at the Foothills Medical Centre on June 8, 2008 at the age of 83 years. Russell was born and raised in Maidstone, Saskatchewan. At age nineteen he joined the Royal Canadian Army and proudly served his country with the Black Watch Regiment in WWII. Following the war he eventually moved to the Cochrane area where he worked as a farm hand. It was here that he met Doreen and in December 1950 they were married. For the next six years Russell and Doreen followed his passion for farming as they worked on farms in Cochrane, Springbank and Irricana where they formed many lifelong friendships. In 1957 they moved to Bowness where they have resided since. Russell epitomized hard work and for most of his working life held two jobs. He worked at the Calgary Stockyards for twenty-five years the majority of which were spent working the night shift. During the summer months he continued to work on various farms in the Calgary area. His second job during the winter was making the outdoor ice at the Bowness Community which many still refer to as the best outdoor ice the city has ever seen. Russell was very proud to be recognized by the community in 1988 when he was presented with a citizenship award. Following his retirement he could often be seen throughout the community on his daily walks - and in his later years on his motorized scooter - where he "unofficially" kept an eye on community bylaw infractions. Russell is lovingly remembered by his wife Doreen; his children Ann (Howard), Pat (Bev), Darlene, Brian (Fern), Barb, Alan (Karen), Lori (Terry) and eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren who gave him such tremendous joy through his later years when he courageously battled failing health with a will that was a true testament to his character. He is also survived by two sisters Louise Zornes and Roberta Metheral. Russell was predeceased by his mother and father Margaret and Herbert, sisters Edith and Ethel and brothers Eldon and David. The family expresses its thanks to Dr. Bill Hall and the many other doctors, nurses and hospital staff involved in Russell's care. A Celebration of Russell's Life will be held at CALGARY CREMATORIUM CHAPEL, 3219 - 4 Street N.W.
