Vera M. Borden Vera M. Borden, 71, of The Drew Nursing Home, Sackville and formerly of Moncton, passed away peacefully at her residence on Monday, June 9, 2008. Born in Flat Lands, NB, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Ida (McDavid) Borden. Vera was a member of Highfield St. Baptist Church and the Women's Missionary Society. Vera will be sadly missed by her brother, Allan Borden (Irene), Moncton; one niece, Kelly Taylor, Allison; nephews, Chris Borden (Lise), Saint John, Craig Borden, Dieppe; four great nieces. BURGESS, J. Arnold Peacefully, on Sunday June 8th 2008, in his 101st year. Arnold Burgess was the devoted and beloved husband of the late Adele Baizana. A doting father to Joanne (Martin Freeman), Margo (Stephen Barrette) and Diane. His daughters will miss his warmth, intelligence and gentle spirit. A proud grandfather to Daniel, Benjamin, Emily and Elizabeth. He is survived by his sister Lois (Sheldon Ross) and many nieces and nephews. Son of the late Albyn Burgess and Susan Mulherin. Predeceased by his brothers Bruce and Bill, and sisters Ola, Dora, Peggy, Joan and Ruth. Arnold Burgess was a native of Grand Falls, New Brunswick, a graduate of St. Francis Xavier University (class of 1928) and a meteorologist with the federal government from 1942 to 1972. Friends and family may pay their respects at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at Saint-Thomas d'Aquin Roman Catholic Church, 1244 place Kilborn on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. followed by interment at Hope Cemetery. Dear brother of Lena Moyle, Evelyn Sommers (husband Grant) and Donald (wife Jean), all of Sudbury, Bernie Watson (husband Bruce), Aurelie (husband John Parker), Dennis and Frank (wife Nancy), all of North Bay, Isabelle Cunningham (husband Brian) of New Market and the late Aldege, Leonard, Claude, Edward and Janette, all predeceased. Raymond was born in North Bay on March 15th, 1931. He had been a resident of Sudbury area for 42 years and had worked as a millwright at INCO for approximately 25 years. Some of his favourite pastimes were bowling and playing horseshoes. He will be remembered as a man that was loved by all who knew him. As per his wishes, there will be no visitation or service. HARRIS, Verna 2008-06-09 Harris, Verna (formerly PURDEY) 1920-2008 After a long full life, Verna (Purdey) Harris of St. Albert, Alberta, passed away on June 5, 2008, just a few days after her 88th birthday. For many years, Verna lived in Thunder Bay and worked as a nurse at the Port Arthur General Hospital, 4-East. Born in Vancouver, Verna studied nursing at St. Paul‘s Hospital, graduating in 1943. Nursing was a profession she loved. She retired to St. Albert in 1980. Throughout her life, Verna was recognized and admired for her sense of humour, her optimistic nature and her compassionate support of others. She was predeceased by her parents, Edward and Grace Oliver, her brother Walter Oliver, her first husband Jim Purdey, second husband Walter Harris and her granddaughter Grace. She is survived by her sister Alice Harvey; five children and two step-children: Alice (Fred), Louise (Andrew), Stephen (Nancy), Cheryl (Bruce), Betty (Bryan), Daphne (David), and Earl (Cynthia); 12 grandchildren: Heather, Vance, Thomas, Sarah, Susan, Amy, Matthew, Carolyn, Rebecca, Graham, Andrew and Jane, and seven great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place. At Verna‘s request no funeral was held. Donations in Verna‘s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Born in Oromocto, NB he was the son of Lorene (Peterson) and the late Charles Taylor. Michael John was a Lab Tech at the Ottawa Genaral Hospital. LAMER, Laurent Dr. 30 Juillet 1931-8 Juin 2008 Le docteur Laurent Lamer est décédé paisiblement à l'hôpital Notre-Dame après une longue lutte contre la maladie. Le docteur Lamer a oeuvré pendant plus de quarante ans au département d'ophtalmologie de l'hôpital Notre-Dame et de la faculté de médecine de l'Université de Montréal. Durant sa longue carrière, le docteur Lamer a non seulement traité de nombreux patients mais il a été l'un des pionniers canadiens de l'utilisation du laser en traitement de la rétine et de l'utilisation de l'ultrason oculaire comme outil de diagnostique. En reconnaissance de ses nombreuses contributions à la médecine, le docteur Lamer a été honoré par le département d'ophtalmologie et par la faculté de médecin de l'Université de Montréal, qui lui ont octroyé une médaille de carrière. Il laisse dans le deuil sa compagne Jocelyne Gauthier; ses fils Francis et Olivier; leurs épouses Bena Stock et Malene Saaby; ses petites-filles Madeleine et Michelle; ses petits-fils Sébastien et Simon, Tamarha et Jessie Pierce (filles de Jocelyne Gauthier); ses frères et soeurs: Hubert, Jean-Louis, Claudette et Jocelyne; ses beaux-frères et belles-soeurs: Fernande Lamer, Rachelle Lamer, Jules Jobin, Yvon Matte, Pierrette Lusignan, Jacqueline April, Françoise et Médéric Desrochers, Monique April, Hélène April, Luc April et Lois Hess, ainsi que de nombreux neveux et nièces, amis et collègues. HISKO, Thomas Joseph (T.J.) Passed away peacefully at Southlake Regional Health Centre, Newmarket on Sunday June 8, 2008 at 62 years of age, after a brave four year battle with A.L.S. Loving husband of Darlene and son of Virginia Gower (nee Aubrey) and Clifford Hisko. Proud father of daughter Jennifer McCombes and son-in-law Ian McCombes and son Kevin Hisko and fiancee Melissa Dorman. Brother to Jean Mitchell, Lorraine Smith-Dorian-Hisko and Patricia Hisko. Tom was born in Renfrew, Ontario, was educated as a machinist at George Brown College. Tom spent 40 years working at Anchor Cap Enclosure / Crown Cork & Seal. Tom was a member of the Canadian Progress Club, an avid outdoorsman and generous volunteer. Tom will be dearly missed. The family requests that all donations be made to the A.L.S. Joan Catherine King Joan King, wife of the late Philip King Jr., of the Miramichi Senior Citizens Home, and formerly of Douglastown, N.B., passed away at the Miramichi Regional Hospital, Saturday, May 31, 2008 at the age of 67. Born in Chelmsford, N.B., on August 25, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Helen (McEvoy) and Lawrence Duthie, of Chelmsford, N.B. Joan was a seamstress for many years and had also been employed at Russell's Grocery and Nea's Handy Stand for 19 years before her retirement. She enjoyed playing cards and spending time with her family, as well as her grandchildren, who were her pride and joy. She was friendly and outgoing with a terrific sense of humour and sharp wit. Joan will be greatly missed by her daughter, Lisa Esty and son-in-law, Glenn, of Russellville, N.B.; son, Paul King, of Ontario, James King (Yolanda), of B.C.; four grandchildren; Dylan Esty, of Russellville; Mathew King of Miramichi; Jordan and Michael King of B.C.; three sisters, Opal Williamson (the late Paul), Bernice Egers (Ralph Campbell), of Blackville, N.B., Edwina McDonald (Bud) of Miramichi, N.B.; mother-in-law, Margaret King of Miramichi, N.B.; two sisters-in-law, Vera Duthie (Hugh Kirkpatrick), and Ella Marie Richard (Robert); several nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Readings were done by Joan's niece, Jodey Bannister, and Michelle Roy, family friend. Organist, Mary Butler, sang and accompanied St. Mary's Senior Choir with the hymns, "Here I am Lord", "Gentle Woman", "Be Not Afraid", "Songs of the Angels", "Songs of the Angels", and "Amazing Grace". Pallbearers were : Joe McGrath, Hugh Kirkpatrick, Bud McDonald, Robert Bannister, Ralph Campbell, and Robert Richard. Burial followed in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery. FLORES SR., MARCO A. It is with great sadness that the family of Marco A. Flores Tepeque Sr. announces his passing. Born in Guatemala City, Guatemala, he was the son of the late Luis Rafael Flores Castillo and Julia Tepeque de Flores. He leaves behind a family that will miss him deeply; his wife of 28 years, Maria; and his beloved children: Juan Carlos, Eunice, Marco Jr., Andrez and Rodrigo. He is also survived by his loving brother, Rafael; and sisters, Mercedez, Ana, Maria Teresa, Alicia, Marta and their spouses. He was predeceased by his parents as well as two brothers, Jose Luis and Jose Raul. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews and friends all residing in Guatemala City, Guatemala and Canada. In 1979, Marco became a nurse in Guatemala and worked as one for many years. He healed many hearts and brought a smile to many with his contagious energy and laughter - which always made our day. He enjoyed fishing, writing, reading and travelling. He was a committed choir member at St. Anthony's church in Fredericton. His sense of adventure was unmatched. Dad, you will be greatly missed and we take some comfort in knowing you are in a better place and that your spirit lives on. Vincent Patrick Morrison The death of Vincent Patrick Morrison of Miramichi, NB, occurred at the Miramichi Regional Hospital on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at the age of 88. Born in Newcastle, NB, Vincent was the son of the late Ronald and Lillian (McCullam) Morrison. Vincent was a Veteran of WW11, member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 10, Newcastle, and retired from the Post Office and Heath Steele Mines. Vincent is survived by one daughter, Joan Brunett (Stephen) of Bathurst, NB; two sons, Eric (Nancy) of Moncton, NB and Michael (Janice) of Derby, NB; three brothers, Louis (Frances), Bill (Agnes) and James all of Miramichi, NB; 11 Grandchildren, Douglas John Robichaud, Tammy, Lewis, Christopher, Jeffrey, Andrew Morrison, Stephanie Brunett, Robbie, Shawn Morrison, Angelia Goulet and Michelle Routledge; and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by one daughter, Carol Anne Morrison; three sisters, Agnes, Genevieve and Carmel; and four brothers, Charles, Joe, Raymond and Warren. HERBERT, Robert Hughes (Bud) - Passed away peacefully at the age of 83 years at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital on Saturday, June 7, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer. Bud is survived by Frances, his loving wife of 52 years, daughter Kelly and son in law Nick McConnell. Predeceased by mother Jessie Herbert, father Robert Herbert, Uncles Fred and William Fretz and Aunt Lillian Fretz. Bud spent his life as a fruit grower with his Uncle Fred. During the winter months Bud worked for the Ministry of Transportation out of Homer garage as a roads inspector and dispatcher. Maintaining the family homestead and enjoying Canadiana antiques occupied many of his later years. He was Master of Temple Lodge in 1988, 32nd degree Scottish Rite, member of Lodge of Perfection, Rose Croix, and member of St. Catharines & District Shrine Club. Our special thanks to the staff at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital and their palliative care team, for all their support to Bud and our family, The care and support provided by Dr. Marshall, Mary Katherine and Gail will be forever remembered. ALBOTA, Suzanne Claire Suddenly and tragically at the Ottawa Hospital, Civic campus, on Saturday, June 7, 2008, at the age of 61. Beloved daughter and best friend to her mother Claire Albota (nee Therien). Also mourning her death are her brother, Robert, and sister-in-law, Ivanna, and her loving niece, Stephanya. Predeceased by her father, Victor, in 1996. Suzanne also leaves behind her precious birds, Zak and Nigel, which for her were like family. Many friends and relatives in the Albota family cared about and helped Sue to overcome her debilitating battle with rheumatoid arthritis. The family especially wishes to thank cousins Faith and Vic Albota, Henriette Almeida and her daughter Silvina (Jim), Marina Jivotovskaia, Dianne Hartling, Lucille Piche, and Ruth Silbert, for all their love and support. Sue never complained about her chronic illness and always maintained a positive attitude. Born and raised in Ottawa on January 28, 1947, Suzanne Albota worked for the Communications Branch of the Public Service Commission of Canada, until her retirement in 1997. Suzanne loved nature. In March of this year, she moved to her newly built home in Gatineau (Aylmer) and was enchanted by the birds and wildlife that fed at her door, including a large black bear! In memory of Suzanne, please feed the birds and squirrels. Our dog will dearly miss "the Bone Lady" and our cats will miss Sue's treats. Jim was born on August 5, 1944 in Toronto, Ontario and, after graduating from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1971, moved to Thunder Bay with his young family. As Jim‘s family grew, so did his passion for the people and community of Thunder Bay, as evidenced by not only the many ways he attempted to develop and further our community possibilities, but to motivate others to do the same long after he was gone. His values and beliefs were the foundation that his family was built on. A foundation of humility, honesty, integrity, commitment, and love, that will live on for generations to come. DOLBY, M. Dorothy (nee Verse) - Peacefully into the presence of her Lord, Friday June 6, 2008, at Riverview Gardens, Chatham. Loving wife of the late Rev. L. D. Dolby who predeceased her in 1964. Loving mother of Lois Slobodnick (late Nick) of Windsor, Ruth Dolby of London, Larry (Vicki) Dolby of Chatham and Jeanne (Ivan) Jeacle of Perth. Survived by several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Survived by her younger brother Fred (Helen) Verse of Michigan and sister Midge Barna of North Carolina. Predeceased by brothers Herb and Walt and sister Martha all of New Jersey. Dorothy was loved and respected for her strong faith, and sense of humour. She and her late husband served as missionaries in the Congo for 25 years until evacuated in 1960. In 1962 they started a Baptist Church in Chateauguay, Quebec. They retired to Wardsville, ON in 1963. After Lawrence passed away in 1964, Dorothy continued her life in Wardsville until age 65 when she retired to Chatham. She kept active at Emmanuel Baptist Church until her last few years in Maple City Residence and Riverview Gardens. Friends will be received at the BOWMAN FUNERAL HOME, 4 Victoria Avenue, Chatham (519- 352-2390) for visitation on Tuesday June 10 from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11:00am with Rev Richard Holliday officiating. Interment at Oakland Cemetery, #2 Highway at Glencoe. Contribution to The Gideons or Emmanuel Baptist Church would be appreciated. PLAATJES, Mona Elizabeth (nee Small) November 27, 1934-June 7, 2008 - In the early afternoon on Saturday, June 7, Mona passed away peacefully at the Stedman Community Hospice in Brantford, Ontario. Surrounded by her children, she went to be with her Heavenly father who was her strength and guide. She was the loving wife to the late Rev. John Plaatjes. her seven children and their spouses will sadly miss her; Lilian and Joe Suriano, Nancy and Clarence Mezereeuw, Patricia and Bill Huizinga, Bonnie and Tom Blackwood, Ernest and Marguerite Plaatjes, Jerome and Gillian Plaatjes, and Jackie and Scott Gelfand. Mona was blessed with twenty grandchildren and four great grandchildren who will sadly miss their grandmother who cherished each one of them. Mona's sister, Petronella, and her husband Abe Plaatjes will remember her with great fondness and love. Her life will always be a testament to those who knew her. Visitation will be held at Immanuel Christian Reformed Church located at 61 Mohawk Road West, in Hamilton on Monday, June 9, from 6-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the same location on Tuesday, June 10 at 1:30 p.m. Interment White Chapel Memorial Gardens.
