BRASSARD, 2008-06-09 BRASSARD Ms. Liette Brassard, age 59 years, a resident of Thunder Bay passed away peacefully with her daughter Jeannette Godin and cousin Lorraine Frappier at her bedside, at the TBRHSC on June 6, 2008. She was born on August 11, 1948 in Angliers, Quebec. She moved to Thunder Bay in the 1960’s with her mom Mary Brassard. Liette is survived by her son Darrell Brassard, daughter Jeannette Godin, grandson Evan Godin-De Wolfe, sister Anita Bernard, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, an aunt, and an uncle. She was predeceased by her parents Mary and Alex Brassard. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 11, 2008 when family and friends will gather for Funeral Mass at 10:30 am at Corpus Christi R.C. Church, celebrated by Rev. Richard Kowalchuk. Interment in Mountainview Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to service time. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Thunder Bay District Humane Society or the Northern Cancer Fund would be appreciated.

HARRIS, Verna 2008-06-09 Harris, Verna (formerly PURDEY) 1920-2008 After a long full life, Verna (Purdey) Harris of St. Albert, Alberta, passed away on June 5, 2008, just a few days after her 88th birthday. For many years, Verna lived in Thunder Bay and worked as a nurse at the Port Arthur General Hospital, 4-East. Born in Vancouver, Verna studied nursing at St. Paul‘s Hospital, graduating in 1943. Nursing was a profession she loved. She retired to St. Albert in 1980. Throughout her life, Verna was recognized and admired for her sense of humour, her optimistic nature and her compassionate support of others. She was predeceased by her parents, Edward and Grace Oliver, her brother Walter Oliver, her first husband Jim Purdey, second husband Walter Harris and her granddaughter Grace. She is survived by her sister Alice Harvey; five children and two step-children: Alice (Fred), Louise (Andrew), Stephen (Nancy), Cheryl (Bruce), Betty (Bryan), Daphne (David), and Earl (Cynthia); 12 grandchildren: Heather, Vance, Thomas, Sarah, Susan, Amy, Matthew, Carolyn, Rebecca, Graham, Andrew and Jane, and seven great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place. At Verna‘s request no funeral was held. Donations in Verna‘s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Joan Catherine King Joan King, wife of the late Philip King Jr., of the Miramichi Senior Citizens Home, and formerly of Douglastown, N.B., passed away at the Miramichi Regional Hospital, Saturday, May 31, 2008 at the age of 67. Born in Chelmsford, N.B., on August 25, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Helen (McEvoy) and Lawrence Duthie, of Chelmsford, N.B. Joan was a seamstress for many years and had also been employed at Russell's Grocery and Nea's Handy Stand for 19 years before her retirement. She enjoyed playing cards and spending time with her family, as well as her grandchildren, who were her pride and joy. She was friendly and outgoing with a terrific sense of humour and sharp wit. Joan will be greatly missed by her daughter, Lisa Esty and son-in-law, Glenn, of Russellville, N.B.; son, Paul King, of Ontario, James King (Yolanda), of B.C.; four grandchildren; Dylan Esty, of Russellville; Mathew King of Miramichi; Jordan and Michael King of B.C.; three sisters, Opal Williamson (the late Paul), Bernice Egers (Ralph Campbell), of Blackville, N.B., Edwina McDonald (Bud) of Miramichi, N.B.; mother-in-law, Margaret King of Miramichi, N.B.; two sisters-in-law, Vera Duthie (Hugh Kirkpatrick), and Ella Marie Richard (Robert); several nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, and her husband, Phil, she is predeceased by an infant son and daughter;a brother, Clayton; and father-in-law, Philip King Sr. Visitation was held at the Northumberland Funeral Home, on Tuesday, June 3rd, from 2-4 and 7-9 and on Wednesday, June 4th, from 2-4 and 7-9, Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, June 5th at 12 noon at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church with Father Tom Fowler officiating. Readings were done by Joan's niece, Jodey Bannister, and Michelle Roy, family friend. Organist, Mary Butler, sang and accompanied St. Mary's Senior Choir with the hymns, "Here I am Lord", "Gentle Woman", "Be Not Afraid", "Songs of the Angels", "Songs of the Angels", and "Amazing Grace". Pallbearers were : Joe McGrath, Hugh Kirkpatrick, Bud McDonald, Robert Bannister, Ralph Campbell, and Robert Richard. Burial followed in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the care of Northumberland Funeral Home, Miramichi, telephone 622-7741.

FLORES SR., MARCO A. It is with great sadness that the family of Marco A. Flores Tepeque Sr. announces his passing. Born in Guatemala City, Guatemala, he was the son of the late Luis Rafael Flores Castillo and Julia Tepeque de Flores. He leaves behind a family that will miss him deeply; his wife of 28 years, Maria; and his beloved children: Juan Carlos, Eunice, Marco Jr., Andrez and Rodrigo. He is also survived by his loving brother, Rafael; and sisters, Mercedez, Ana, Maria Teresa, Alicia, Marta and their spouses. He was predeceased by his parents as well as two brothers, Jose Luis and Jose Raul. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews and friends all residing in Guatemala City, Guatemala and Canada. In 1979, Marco became a nurse in Guatemala and worked as one for many years. He healed many hearts and brought a smile to many with his contagious energy and laughter - which always made our day. He enjoyed fishing, writing, reading and travelling. He was a committed choir member at St. Anthony's church in Fredericton. His sense of adventure was unmatched. Dad, you will be greatly missed and we take some comfort in knowing you are in a better place and that your spirit lives on. McDONALD, BEATRICE C. - The death of Beatrice C. McDonald, widow of Dr. W. O. McDonald, occurred peacefully at Rocmaura Nursing Home on Saturday, June 7, 2008. Mrs. McDonald was born in Saint John on December 24, 1903, a daughter of the late James E. and Margaret (McCarthy) O'Brien, a was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a faithful member of the Cathedral Parish for many years and was a Life Member of the Catholic Women's League. She is survived by one daughter, M. Patricia "Paddy" Godkin (Robert) of Ottawa; one son, J. Kevin McDonald (Deborah) of Saint John; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, including Sister Helen O'Neill, S.C.I.C. and James B. O'Neill. CARR, WILLIAM (WILLIE) SALATHIEL Surrounded by family, William (Willie) Salathiel Carr passed away at the DR. Everett Chalmers Hospital on Friday, June 6, 2008 in his eightieth year and after a period of failing health. He was born in Geary, The son of the late Robert and Belle Carr. Willie was employed at the Lord Beaverbrook Hotel in Fredericton for many years before joining School District 25 in Oromocto as a bus driver until his retirement. Willie and Pauline enjoyed retirement to the fullest, spending winters with many new friends at the Seabring Trailer Park in Florida. Willie is survived by his wife of sixty years, Pauline (Legassie); son, Bill (Debbie) of French Lake; daughter, Mary Lou (Allen) of Dawson Creek, BC; sisters-in-law, Avis Cabanna (Ray), Doreen LeGassie, and Joanie LeGassie; brother-in-law, Reg LeGassie (Sandra); son-in-law, Stan (Dianne) and five grandchildren, Andrea Hawe (Donnie), Eric Foss, Kevin Foss, Troy Howe (Tracey) and Tanya Milton (Jeff). Also survived by great-grandchildren, Kiersten, Bailey, Kaitlyn, Caitland, Hannah and Caroline. He will be missed by his uncle, Ashley Carr and special niece, Paulette (Carr) Rogers who was flower girl at his wedding and many nieces and nephews, friends and special neighbours, Willie and Kathie Pinette. MCCARRON, JOSEPH FRANCIS - passed away at the Ridgewood Veterans Wing on Sunday June 8th 2008 after a lengthy illness. Born in Saint John to Frank and Caroline (Laracey) McCarron. He is predeceased by his parents and his sister, Noreen Taylor. He leaves to mourn his sister, Clare, Lois Harvey (Dr. Neil) Nfld., and brother-in-law, James Taylor. Several nieces and nephews, Mary Luckett (David), Patricia Taylor (Norman), Katherine Taylor, Alta. Carolyn Dicks (Kenneth), Susan Roberts (Bill), Dr. Andrew and Dr. Shelley Sullivan, Nfld, Dr. Michael Taylor (Wendy) Saint John. Joe was a graduate of St. Vincent's Boys High School. He served in the Air Force in England in WW II. He was well known in the plumbing business in administration. He was employed with James Robertson and later Emco Ltd. Joe was a regular and committed blood donor of the Red Cross Blood Transfusion Program and quietly contributed to many charities of the less fortunate. He enjoyed many summers at his camp in Sussex hunting and fishing, an avid sportsman caringly provided his friends and their families with a country vacation. DESLOGES, Maria Ida (nee Prenol) - In loving memory of Maria Ida (nee Prenol) Desloges 83 years who passed away Friday, June 6th, 2008 at her residence. A well respected and well loved life resident of Coniston. Maria married Alfred Desloges in Coniston in 1948. A devout Roman Catholic she attended St. Paul the Apostle Church and belonged to the Parish CWL. She was a wonderful cook having worked at the Colonial Inn for many years. She was a member of the Coniston Golden Age Club. Besides cooking delicious dinner she also was an accomplished knitter. Maria loved people especially children. She was devoted to her loving family. Beloved husband Alfred Desloges. Loving mother of Fred Desloges (wife Joanne), Sylvio Desloges, Christine Champagne (husband Gerry) and Colette McKnight (husband Allen). Cherished grandmother of Daniel Desloges (wife Christina), James Desloges, Chantal Desloges, Tracy West, Kevin Champagne, Jennifer McKnight, Lindsay McKnight and great grandchildren Paige Redcliffe, Teagan West and Jonathan Desloges. HERBERT, Robert Hughes (Bud) - Passed away peacefully at the age of 83 years at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital on Saturday, June 7, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer. Bud is survived by Frances, his loving wife of 52 years, daughter Kelly and son in law Nick McConnell. Predeceased by mother Jessie Herbert, father Robert Herbert, Uncles Fred and William Fretz and Aunt Lillian Fretz. Bud spent his life as a fruit grower with his Uncle Fred. During the winter months Bud worked for the Ministry of Transportation out of Homer garage as a roads inspector and dispatcher. Maintaining the family homestead and enjoying Canadiana antiques occupied many of his later years. He was Master of Temple Lodge in 1988, 32nd degree Scottish Rite, member of Lodge of Perfection, Rose Croix, and member of St. Catharines & District Shrine Club. Our special thanks to the staff at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital and their palliative care team, for all their support to Bud and our family, The care and support provided by Dr. Marshall, Mary Katherine and Gail will be forever remembered. MARCONI, Frank (Francis) - Frank passed away peacefully in his 90th year, on June 5, 2008, with his family at his side. Frank was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 1930's. He was a veteran of WWII. While stationed in Wales, he met his beloved Marion (1923-2004). Frank will be sadly missed by his devoted children Reed (Ruth) and Christopher (Rosalyn). Predeceased by his daughter Andrea (1985). NICHOLLS, The Honourable Gordon George Q.C., L.L.B. - Passed away peacefully at his residence, Sunrise of Erin Mills in Mississauga, on Saturday, June 7th, 2008 in his 81st year. Loving husband of Dorothy Louise (nee Nicol) for 54 years. Dear father of Wendy Louise Nicholls and her husband Robert James Barrese, and Gordon Roderick Nicholls. Gordon practiced law in St. Catharines for 18 years with the law firm Seymour, Lampard, Goldring, Young & Nicholls until being appointed as a Federal Judge, Ontario County Court in 1971. In 1990 Gordon was transferred to the Ontario Court of Justice and in 1999 to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, General Division. Gordon sat 32 years in Welland until his retirement in 2003. As per Gordon's wishes, a small private ceremony has taken place. If desired, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or the Canadian Cancer Society in Gordon's memory. DOLBY, M. Dorothy (nee Verse) - Peacefully into the presence of her Lord, Friday June 6, 2008, at Riverview Gardens, Chatham. Loving wife of the late Rev. L. D. Dolby who predeceased her in 1964. Loving mother of Lois Slobodnick (late Nick) of Windsor, Ruth Dolby of London, Larry (Vicki) Dolby of Chatham and Jeanne (Ivan) Jeacle of Perth. Survived by several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Survived by her younger brother Fred (Helen) Verse of Michigan and sister Midge Barna of North Carolina. Predeceased by brothers Herb and Walt and sister Martha all of New Jersey. Dorothy was loved and respected for her strong faith, and sense of humour. She and her late husband served as missionaries in the Congo for 25 years until evacuated in 1960. In 1962 they started a Baptist Church in Chateauguay, Quebec. They retired to Wardsville, ON in 1963. After Lawrence passed away in 1964, Dorothy continued her life in Wardsville until age 65 when she retired to Chatham. She kept active at Emmanuel Baptist Church until her last few years in Maple City Residence and Riverview Gardens. PLAATJES, Mona Elizabeth (nee Small) November 27, 1934-June 7, 2008 - In the early afternoon on Saturday, June 7, Mona passed away peacefully at the Stedman Community Hospice in Brantford, Ontario. Surrounded by her children, she went to be with her Heavenly father who was her strength and guide. She was the loving wife to the late Rev. John Plaatjes. her seven children and their spouses will sadly miss her; Lilian and Joe Suriano, Nancy and Clarence Mezereeuw, Patricia and Bill Huizinga, Bonnie and Tom Blackwood, Ernest and Marguerite Plaatjes, Jerome and Gillian Plaatjes, and Jackie and Scott Gelfand. Mona was blessed with twenty grandchildren and four great grandchildren who will sadly miss their grandmother who cherished each one of them. Mona's sister, Petronella, and her husband Abe Plaatjes will remember her with great fondness and love. Her life will always be a testament to those who knew her.
