HORNYANSKY, Michael Sands - Michael Hornyansky has died in Tofield, Alberta, on May 14, 2008 after a short illness. He was 80 years old. He was the son of Nicholas Hornyansky, artist, and Joyce Sands, cellist. He was predeceased by his sister, Barbara Serson. His memory will be cherished by his wife, Monica; his daughter Vivien (Denis Patterson) and son Mark (Eva Jansen); his grandchildren Amy (Brad Kudrowich), Blake Patterson, Jenn (Justin Lindsey), Laura Patterson, Lucas Hornyansky and Nicklas Hornyansky; his great grand-daughter Reese Kudrowich; and from the teaching he loved, by many generations of students across the country. Michael graduated with first class honours from all the educational institutions he attended: Oakwood Collegiate Institute, University College, Toronto and Merton College, Oxford where he was a Rhodes scholar and won the Newdigate prize for Poetry in 1951. He taught English Language and Literature at Carleton University, Ottawa for 10 years, and moved to Niagara in 1964 as the founding chairman of the English Department at Brock University. He taught there until his retirement in 1993. He wrote The Golden Phoenix, a retelling of French Canadian folk tales, and published papers on children's literature and the discriminating use of the English language; he reviewed Poetry in Canada for 10 years for the University of Toronto Quarterly. A family gathering to celebrate his life will be held at a later date. YARD, Sister Kathleen Mary (Sister Mary of the Rosary) A Grey Sister of the Immaculate Conception, Pembroke, ON, died in Pembroke, Ontario on the 14th day of May 2008 in the 78th year of her Religious Life. Left to mourn are the members of her Religious Community, nieces, Ethel Hynes, Ellen Kavenaugh, Rosalie Ledwell, other devoted nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents, Peter and Irene (Carew), brothers, Henry, Stephen and Arthur, sisters, Mary and Esther. Kathleen was born November 1910, in St. John's, Nfld. She entered the Community on September 25th, 1930, pronouncing final vows on July 17th, 1936. Her ministry involved various duties, including, sacristy and food services, caring for residents at St. Patrick's Home, Ottawa, assignments at the Seminary, Ladner, B.C. and at Assumption Convent, Vanier, where she served for a total of thirty-four years. BARSTAD, Ronald Richard August 14, 1949 - May 8, 2008 Ron passed away peacefully on May 8, 2008 in Indonesia. He is survived by four daughters Michelle Barstad, Monica (Brad), Kendra (Kelly), and Deanna (Don), and eleven grandchildren; two sisters Helen (Jack) Talbot, and Elvina (Walter) Langhans; four brothers Gerald, Robert (Karen), Leonard (Shirley) and Gordon. Ron will also be missed by ex-wives Gwen and Linda, and by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews in a large extended family. He will be mourned by many friends worldwide. He was predeceased by parents Elvin and Eva, and by six brothers Melvin, Clarence, Duane, Errol, Donald, and Fred. Ron spent most of his forty-three year working career in the oil patch in various jobs. Most recently he was employed by Baker Hughes in Indonesia. Ron enjoyed most sports, but especially golf, hockey, and rodeo. He spent his early years in Gleichen, AB, then lived and worked in many locations throughout North America, the United Kingdom, South America, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East. He enjoyed work and was always eager to socialize and was usually first to rise and last to sleep. He had exceptional health all of his life and his passing was quiet and peaceful. Charles was born in Colyton, Devonshire, England and came to Canada in 1926. He farmed just east of Balzac all of his working life. Charles loved to travel and he and Janet had many enjoyable trips to the United States and also abroad. Angela was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt and nonna. Angela was born in Sepino, Italy into a large and loving family. She married Domenico Parente on December 27, 1956 and together they immigrated to Canada, settling in Calgary in 1961. Angela worked for many years as a caretaker with the Calgary Catholic School District, where she was loved by all who knew her. Her home was always open to her many relatives and friends and there was always plenty to eat, for she was a wonderful baker and chef. Angela earned the love and respect of those around her by being an example of honesty, integrity and devotion. She will be lovingly remembered by all who knew her. Angela will be sadly missed by her husband of fifty-one years Domenico; her son and daughter-in-law, Mario and Laurie, and her pride and joy, her grandchildren Jacob, Isabella, Joseph and Grace. PATTON, Frederick Joseph February 19, 1922 - May 12, 2008 Frederick Joseph Patton, beloved husband of Grace Mildred (nee Deshayes) of Calgary, passed away quietly on May 12, 2008 at the age of 86 years. Fred was born on February 19, 1922 in Coalhurst, AB (approximately seventeen kms west of Lethbridge). He was with the City of Calgary health department for thirty-seven years before he retired in 1981 as the Chief Health Inspector. Fred and Grace were fortunate enough to spend the next twenty-seven years as snowbirds in Phoenix. Fred was a very active member in the War Amputations of Canada and was the president of the Calgary branch for a number of years. He was also a Director on the National Counsel for the War Amps over the past twenty-nine years. Fred enjoyed all activities, but excelled in golfing, curling, lawn bowling and pool. He had a great love of life and threw himself into everything with great enthusiasm. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of sixty years, Grace, and three sons: Michael, Peter, and Paul and their families; plus the many, many relatives and friends who already miss him. SHARP, Gertrude Evelyn 1910 - 2008 Died peacefully in her sleep on May 15, 2008 at the age of 97 years surrounded by her family, in her room at CareWest Royal Park. Gert was raised in Edmonton where she lived until graduation from the University of Alberta with a Bachelors Degree in Home Economics in 1932. After her marriage to W. Gray Sharp in 1936 she moved to Calgary where she lived a wonderful and full life. Her greatest joys in life were spending time with family and friends. Gert was beloved by all who knew her and known for her kindness, generosity, loving spirit and sense of humour. She had the gift of making everyone she knew feel special, especially her family, and will be sorely missed. She will be lovingly remembered by her son William Sharp and wife Jane LeBaron, her grandchildren, Andrew Sharp (Heather), Laura Sharp (Wayne Howse) and Ian Sharp, step-grandchildren Christopher, Sarah and Graham McCrimmon and her great-grandchildren Lulu, Gabriel, Liam and David. She was predeceased by her husband, Gray, her brother Jim and sister Margaret, and her grandson Murray Sharp. A celebration of her life will be held on Monday, May 19, 2008 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at 102 Somme Boulevard S.W., Calgary, AB. TROYER, Cameron George February 3, 1932 - May 13, 2008 Cameron George Troyer, beloved husband of Amy, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on May 13, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer. Cameron was born in Binscarth, MB on February 3, 1932. Cameron grew up on the farm on the Assiniboine River in southwest Manitoba. He attended both Crescent Ridge and Binscarth grade schools. Upon graduating his initial aspiration was to follow in his father's footsteps, as a result he attended and received an agricultural diploma from the School of Agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan. After returning to the family farm Cam realized his calling was engineering and he went on to study at the University of Manitoba in 1954. In 1958, Cam graduated with a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. Cameron married Amy Zink of Angusville, MB in 1954 and the two of them moved from Winnipeg to Hamilton, ON where Cam took on his first engineering job with Proctor and Gamble. But his western roots were hard to shake and in 1959 he accepted a position with Sun Oil in Estevan, SK. Thus began his long career in the Western Canadian oil patch which included fourteen years with Sun Oil in Estevan and Calgary, and time with Koch and Brascan/Westmin. At Westmin, Cameron held several executive positions over his fourteen year career there. Upon leaving Westmin in 1990 he started up a small oil company with a few of his old friends called Greypower Resources, where he maintained many of his old relationships and connections from his thirty plus year career in the Calgary oil patch. Cameron was a long-time member of the Rotary Club, APEGGA and served on the board of directors of ARBI from 1991 to 2003. Cameron had political interests and volunteered at the inception of the Reform Party. Cameron and Amy have lived in Westgate Community in Calgary for forty-four years where they raised four children and actively participated in the Westgate Community Association. Cameron is survived by his loving wife, Amy of fifty-four years; sons James (Colleen) Troyer and John (Louise) Troyer; daughters, Jan and Susan (Roger) Wellmann; grandchildren, Tannis, Jordyn, Christine, James, Thomas, Sarah, Emily, Brock and Brody. As well as numerous cousins and extended family throughout Canada. He was predeceased by his parents Emery and Janet Troyer and grandson Samuel Michael Troyer. WESTERBERG, Grace Elaine - age 63 of Dresden passed away Wednesday May 14, 2008 at Victoria Hospital Westminster Campus London. She was born in Chatham Township daughter of the late Ronald and Hazel (Turner) Somerset. Grace was the hairdresser for a number of years at Park St. Place Dresden. She is predeceased by her husband Raymond Eric Westerberg (1999). Surviving is one daughter Wendla Westerberg and one son Eric and Lee-Ann Westerberg. She was a terrific grandma to Erica, Mitchell and Spencer.
