CAIRNES, Patricia "Pat" (nee Larkin) January 8, 1927 - May 12, 2008 Patricia "Pat" Cairnes of Calgary, passed away on May 12, 2008 at the age of 81 years. Born in London, England. Patricia, having survived "The Blitz" would become a war bride. She met Courtney during WWII and followed him to Calgary after his return. In addition to raising her own family, Patricia was a foster-parent to nine children over a five or six year period. Patricia is survived by: sons, Michael (Jackie) of Leduc; Gerry (Naznin) of Houston, Texas; daughter Regan of Calgary; two grandsons; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Olive, Peggy and Shirley. She was predeceased by her husband Courtney in January 2008; brothers Jack and Stan; and sisters Mick and Jean. There will be no Funeral Services. BARRON, Robert H. November 29, 1916 - May 15, 2008 Robert H. Barron, Q.C., passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 15, 2008 at the age of 91. Robert was born at home on Elbow Drive on November 29, 1916 and remained a proud Calgarian throughout his life. Robert's father, Jacob, a lawyer, theatrical impresario and inventor, and his mother, an accomplished concert pianist and philanthropist, raised him in a culturally vibrant home. Robert had a brilliant and inquiring mind and excelled in all his pursuits. He achieved 100% in Grade 12 math and physics. If it had not been for the Depression, he likely would have followed his love of the stars and become an astronomer. Robert's uncle, Samuel Helman, K.C., recognized his potential as a lawyer and assisted him in attending law school at the University of Alberta at the age of nineteen. Robert achieved the highest honours of his law school graduating class of 1938: the Chief Justice's Gold Medal in Law, the Carswell Prize for Third-Year Law Students, and the National Trust Prize in Law. Edward Bredin, Q.C., surviving member of the Law Class, remained a lifelong friend. Robert volunteered to serve in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flight Lieutenant from 1941 to 1945 where he served as a navigation instructor. He trained navigators from the Commonwealth, as well as France and Poland. Robert's impressive law career spanned sixty-four years. He commenced practice with his Uncle Sam's firm, primarily as a civil litigator, representing clients at all levels of Court, including the Supreme Court of Canada on numerous occasions and the Privy Council in London (one of the last appeals allowed from Canada). One of his precedent setting cases was Bennett and White (Calgary) Ltd. v. Municipal Districts of Sugar City No. 5, in which, in May 1951, he appealed a Supreme Court of Canada decision to the Privy Council, and won. Another notable win, Bell v. Klein, in which he appeared at the B.C. Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada on dozens of occasions, is studied in law schools to the present day. Robert also believed strongly in the principle of pro bono work and never turned down a worthy cause for lack of funds. He also inspired three of his daughters to follow his footsteps in law. Robert single-handedly took on the CPR to prevent the devastation of downtown Calgary by their plans to lay tracks along the banks of the Bow River. He was the first non-elected official to be invited to examine witnesses on the floor of the Provincial Legislature. He also lent support to his classmate Ruth Gorman in acting for the Hobema people in establishing their first nations' rights. He was involved in numerous other civic causes, including daylight savings time, fluoridation and politics in general. He was also a member of the Royal Astronomical Society and the Society of Alberta Sceptics. Robert was an ardent Zionist and proud of his Jewish heritage. He served his community in numerous capacities. Notably, he was President of the Calgary Hebrew School for many years and he was honorary director and legal counsel of the Chevra Kadisha of Calgary. He travelled to Israel on numerous occasions alone, with Cleo and with his entire family. Robert's family was most important to him. In May 1956, Robert when speaking at a Zionist convention in Calgary, met a delegate from Junior Hadassah visiting from Edmonton, and fell instantly in love with his Cleoanne. Within a month, they were married. Their affair continued for fifty-two years. Robert was an involved parent to his six beloved children. The family often travelled with all six children, at home and abroad. Robert, as an older father than most, was able to bless his six children with the benefit of his incredible wisdom and knowledge of the world. For twenty-five years he lived with his family at Pine Creek Ranch, where his son Daniel was his greatest helpmate and companion. The greatest achievement of all, Robert saved for the last seven years of his life. After heart surgery, he suffered numerous setbacks. He persevered in order "to spend as many years as possible with my grandchildren". His humility and self-sacrifice has strengthened all of his loving family. We are forever grateful to our most dearly beloved husband, brother, father, and grandfather. Robert is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-two years, Cleoanne, his dear brother, Richard (Jean) Barron and his six loving children, Deborah, Elaine, Daniel, Tamara (Ben Karmel), Joshua and Jacqueline (Peter Ridout), and his seven loving grandchildren, Jeffrey, Gidon, Ariela, Noa, Elizabeth, Samuel and Amelia, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by his parents, Jacob Bell Barron and Amelia Barron and his brother, William Barron. BRASH, Alan Godfrey - passed away peacefully on Wednesday May 14th, 2008 at Peterborough Regional Health Centre in his 86th year. Beloved husband of Mona Brash (McGeachie) residing at Peterborough Manor. Son of the late Isaac and Agnes Brash. Predeceased by his first wife Mary Jane Wallace in 1988. Dear brother of the late Leonard Brash and his twin sisters Dorothy Miller and Lillian Carter of Vancouver. He will be truly missed by his brother in law Gary (Linda) Wallace and his nephew Owen Brash. Alan was born in Oshawa January 16th; 1923. He served his country in the Army during WW2 for two years, before returning to work at General Motors. He also worked for Dowty Equipment of Ajax manufacturing the CF 100 and 105 Arrow undercarriages before joining Andrew Antenna in Whitby in 1965 and retired from there in 1989 as Manager of production control. Alan's community involvement included being a longtime member of OACETT where he held positions of Secretary/Treasurer, Vice Chair and Chairman over a twenty year span. He was also Invigilator for Law and Ethics exams at Sir Sandford Fleming College. His real loves were being an avid golfer (member at Ayren Links Golf Club), country dancing, carpentry, travel and he enjoyed spending time with young people. STRANGE, JUDGE H. HAZEN 1939-2008 Judge H. Hazen Strange passed away peacefully on May 14, 2008, surrounded by his family. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Heather, adored daughters, Elizabeth and Jenny; brother, Bobby (Peggy); nephew, Robbie (Kimberley); niece, Kyla Pollard (Carl); sister-in-law, Barb Buckley (Robert); Aunt, Mary Copp and several cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, H. Hazen Strange, Sr. and Marion Strange; and brother, Colin Bruce Strange. Although born in O'Leary, PEI, Hazen spent most of his life in Fredericton. His life was filled with achievements including many distinguished awards. He holds BBA, BA and BCL degrees from UNB and began his law career after being admitted to the Bar in 1964. He spent time in private practice and worked in Ottawa for the 1967 Centennial Commission before returning to Fredericton in 1967 to become a prosecutor with the province of New Brunswick. He was appointed Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions in 1969 and became Director in 1971. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1978. Hazen was appointed to the Provincial Court of New Brunswick in 1981. He worked initially in Burton and later in Fredericton and enjoyed travelling around the province to hear cases. He loved his time serving as Chief Provincial Court Judge from 1987- 1997. He continued on the bench until his sudden passing. Hazen was a true gentleman. He treated people with fairness and respect and was highly regarded by those in his profession. His love for his work was secondary only to his love for his family. In his spare time, he was an avid salmon fisherman and storyteller. He will be sadly missed by all who loved him. A celebration of Hazen's life will be held Tuesday, May 20th at 2 p.m. at Christ Church Cathedral in Fredericton. Cannon T.A. Smith and the Very Reverend Keith Joyce will officiate. Donations can be made to the Canadian Red Cross or the New Brunswick Extra-Mural Program. The family wishes to thank all of those involved in caring for Hazen over the last few days of his life. WANNER, Susan Mary - On Wednesday, May 14, 2008 Susie of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta passed away at home surrounded by her family and friends at the age of 51 years, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Left with memories of Susie are her husband of 36 years Wayne; son Daryl and girlfriend Krista Miller; parents Orvie and Naomi Burkhart of Bright's Grove, Ontario; siblings Raymond (Anje) Burkhart, Rebecca (Robert) Woolvett, Erma (Kathleen Holmes) Burkhart, Albert (Deb) Burkhart, Barbara Burkhart; sister-in-law Wendy Burkhart; mother-in-law Alice Wanner; sister-in-law Sharon (Jake) Lowen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
