McBAY, Murray Daniel (World War II Veteran) - peacefully at the Pembroke Regional Hospital on Sunday, May 11, 2008 in his 85th year. Murray McBay of Pembroke, husband of the late Rita Hahn. Survived by his children Eileen Derenowski (Romaine), Ottawa; Michael Hahn (Lee), Vancouver; Donna Martin, Vancouver; David Hahn, Toronto; and Helene Hahn, Petawawa. Also survived by older sisters, grandchildren and great-grandchild Jordan. Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion. By request there will be no visitation. Cremation. HOOKER, E. William (Bill) August 23, 1920 - May 9, 2008 Bill died at the Foothills Hospital on Friday, May 9, 2008 after a long and difficult illness. Bill was born in Brownsville, Quebec and spent his youth at Lachute, Quebec. In 1941, he joined the R.C.A.F. and at discharge had attained the rank of Pilot Officer, Flight Engineer. For many years, Bill worked as a landman for Gulf Oil. When he was well, he enjoyed bridge and dancing (which he did very well.) He loved his home and was extraordinarily good at maintaining it. GILL, John Ernest Metropolitan Toronto Police 54 Division Sadly, at home in Kingston, after a courageous battle with cancer, on Sunday, May 11, 2008, in his 62nd year. Predeceased by his parents Olive Lorraine Proctor (Gill) DeBevec (2007) and Inspector Ernest Gill (Toronto Police Force) (1977) and Joseph J. DeBevec (2004). Sadly missed by his sisters, Carol and Alan Christie (Toronto), Elaine and Peter Sheppard (Kingston) and brothers, Jeff and Sarah DeBevec (Houston), and Michael and Annie DeBevec (Grand Marais). Beloved uncle to Ric and Laurie, Cathy and Phil, J. and Sheryl, Michelle and George, Cameron, Dwayne and Cheryl. A caring god-father to Bobby Grabarczyk (Lindsay). KNOX, VIRGINIA LOUISE (WIGGINS) - It is with sadness the family of Virginia Louise Knox, after a year long battle with cancer, announces the passing of their mother on Saturday, May 10, 2008. Virginia was a resident of the Hillcrest Village Seniors Complex in Saint John West where she had many dear friends and was a member of the Hillcrest Croakers singing group. Her daily dose of sunshine from Dot Roberge made Mom's struggle seem a little easier for her and her children. Virginia was born at Portland, Maine on October 13, 1927, and moved with her family to Young's Cove, New Brunswick when she was four. She is predeceased by her parents, Lawrence and Millie (Northrup) Wiggins; infant daughter, Louise; father of her children, Colby Knox; sons-in-law, Pat Stevenson, Lou Spinney, and Frank Little; and great granddaughter, Kayla. Viriginia spent 30 years in Lorneville where she raised six children and for twelve years ran Seaview Grocery where she made many friends and knew all the news of the day. She graduated from hairdressing school in 1948 and worked at Peggy's Beauty salon for many years. Virginia retired from Tabufile in 1992, and had a great knack for finding family ties and how everyone around her was related. Virginia is survived by her sister, Winnifred Trecartin of Saint John; special brother Ralph and his wife Fay of Young's Cove and their children Brenda, Brian, and Tracey; as well as great niece Taylor; her children, Karen Adams (Brian) and Allison Knox (Melanie), all of Musquash, as well as Cheryl Spinney Little, Robert Knox (Nicole) Leigh Knox, and Dale Knox (Wendy), all of Saint John; grandchildren Ryan Adams (Amber), Geoff Adams, Kerry Balemans (Jason), Ginny Knox of Calgary, Alberta, Andrew Knox, Rebecca, MacGregor, and Mallory Knox; and great granddaughter Darhyl Balemans. Virginia had a love for the game of crib, as long as there was a small wager, and when she ran the store, she was known to play for cakes and pies. Virginia enjoyed knitting and reading, and she also enjoyed and looked forward to visits from friends and family, especially nephew Harold. Resting at Brenan's Bay View Select Community Funeral Home, 1461 Manawagonish Road, Saint John West (634-7425), with visiting on Sunday from 7 to 9 PM and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 AM from Brenan's Bay View Chapel. A reception will follow at the funeral home. A family burial will take place in Young's Cove later in the day. Dennis George Matton After a long and courageous battle with cancer, Dennis George Matton died at the age of 50 on May 4, 2008 at the Temiskaming Hospital. He was born in New Liskeard on January 2, 1958 to Albert and Olive Matton. He had worked at Wabi Iron until his illness. Mr. Matton was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and good times with his family and friends. He had been very involved with minor hockey and helped out with many fundraising initiatives. He will be remembered as a devoted husband and father and will be sadly missed. Mr. Matton was predeceased by his parents Albert and Olive Matton. KAKSONEN, Tauno Antero - In loving memory of Tauno Antero Kaksonen, 91 years, who passed away at the Pioneer Manor in Sudbury on Saturday, May 10th, 2008. Survived by his nieces Karen Rantala and Linda Johnston, both of Sudbury; and Ann Morrison of King City; his nephews Jack Juusola of Kamloops, B.C., and Kenneth Kaksonen of Sudbury and by his sister-in-law Pirkko Kaksonen of Sudbury. Predeceased by his brothers; George Kaksonen and Uuno Kaksonen (late wife Meimi), his sister Tyyne Juusola (late husband John) and his niece Carol Andrews. Tauno was born in Sudbury on November 23th, 1916, son of Antti and Anna Kaksonen. For many years he worked in lumber camps and then on the family farm. O'MARRA, Gerald “Gerry“ Fredrick - After a brief illness he passed away in his 72nd year on Saturday May 10, 2008, with his family at his side. Beloved husband of Netta O'Marra (nee Lawrenson) for 51 years. Loving father of Colleen (Alec) Newell, Jim (Sue), Tim (Brenda) and Carrie O'Marra. He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren Josh, Jackie, Sean, Sasha, Shaelyn, James and Ryan. Survived by his mother Sadie O'Marra, brothers Cecil, Lawrence, Art, Allan and sisters Fern, Jean and Edie. Predeceased by his father Lawrence. He was a long time employee of Indusmin/Unimin Canada and a well known strawberry/raspberry farmer at Halls Glen for the last 22 years. Gerry had a real passion for curling and was a long time member of the Lakefield Curling Club. He loved teaching young people the finer points of the game. He never lost his competitive edge, even when it came to beating his friends. He will be forever missed. Une soeur, Josephine, ainsi que trois frères: Will, Alphonse et Livain, l’ont précédée dans la tombe. McCART, Jean 2008-05-12 Mrs. Jean McCart passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness on May 10, 2008 at Grandview Lodge. Jean was born in Kamsack, Saskatchewan on July 17, 1922. Her family moved to Fort William when Jean was quite young. She attended Heath Park School, Fort William Collegiate and Fort William Business College. Jean‘s family lived in Vickers Heights for many years. She started working as a secretary at Canada Car and later with an insurance company in Fort William. Her home and family were her main interest. Jean also had another family, her caregivers at Grandview Lodge, who have taken great care of her for several years. She also enjoyed oil painting, sewing her own clothes, and camping at Ignace. Jean is predeceased by her parents Jack and Esther Gibson, her sister Laura, her son in law Michael Grace, and by many aunts and uncles in Saskatchewan. Jean is survived by her husband of 56 years, Dermot; daughter Kim Grace of Penticton, B.C. (here); sons Jim (Patti), Willy (Dana) and Peter (Maureen); nine grandchildren Karen and Ryan, Nicole and Neil, Dan and Kaitlyn, Jay, Nick and Jessica; and three great-grandchildren Jenna, Liam and Logan. Funeral services for the late Mrs. Jean McCart will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 in the Westfort Chapel, 420 West Gore St. at James. BRUCE, Gordon Robert 2008-05-12 Mr. Gordon Robert Bruce, born February 16, 1924 in Fort William, passed away May 7, 2008 at Sunnybrook Hospital with his family by his side. Gordon will be sadly missed by his wife Doreen Bruce of 56 years, his children Gordon Bruce (Wendy) and Barbara Rankin (Cal); grandchildren Brad Bruce, Marcy Bruce (Darren), Taylor Rankin, Caleigh Rankin and Alanna Rankin; brothers Allan Bruce and Archie Bruce; sisters Verna Pizzolato and Jean Johnson (Ross) along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents William and Lillian Bruce, his brother Bill Bruce and sister-in-laws Grace Bruce and Viola Bruce. Gord lived his entire life in Thunder Bay. He worked for 43 years for the CPR as an Engineer running locomotives retiring, when he was 60. He loved every day of his work on the CPR as much as spending time with his family at Oliver Lake and in the early years on annual camping trips. Gord was an active member of the CPR pensioners. He treasured his cats, enjoyed puttering on various projects and in his early years of retirement traveled annually with Doreen to many exciting destinations. Wherever possible they would arrange for a train trip to complement the vacation plans. Cremation has taken place and a funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre Foundation or the TBRHSC - Northern Cardiac Fund or a charity of your choice.

CROSS, MATTHEW JAMES - Cross, Matthew James, (Max), 98. Passed away on May, 9, 2008 at his residence, Forest Dale Home Inc. Riverside/Albert, Albert Co. N.B. Born in Indian Cove, NL, July 13, 1909, son of George and Grace (Buffet) Cross. Emigrated to Canada at age four and grew up in North Sydney and Neil's Harbour, Cape Breton. As a young man he worked as a fisherman, commercial sailor, and musician. He served in the RCAF in Canada and overseas from 1939 - 1945 as an Aero Mechanic-Flight Sergeant. He was employed as a Foreman, at Canada Cement-Lafarge, Havelock, N.B. for 23 years. He retired with his wife in 1974 to live in their summer home, Belleisle Bay, Erbs Cove, N.B. He enjoyed building boats, playing music and spending winters in Florida. He was married to Treva May Armstrong of Waterside (deceased 2005) for 62 years. Survived by two sons, Dale (Wendy) of Erbs Cove and Dana (Joanne) of Hopewell Cape; sister-in-law, Frances Armstrong of Alma; three grandsons, Matthew (Vanessa), of Calgary, Luke of Hopewell Cape, Brendon (Jennifer) of Saint John; one great-grandson Cody of Saint John; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Bertha and Clara; and one brother, Harold. Resting at Reid's Funeral Home (832-5541), 1063 Main Street, Hampton, with visitation 19:00 to 21:00 hrs Sunday and 12:00 to 13:30 hrs Monday prior to the service. Ransom Samuel Joy died peacefully at Tri-Town Extendicare Nursing Home in Haileybury surrounded by his loving family on April 30, 2008 at the age of 83. Born in Kenabeek on September 22, 1924, Mr. Joy had served with the Canadian Armed Forces during World War II. He worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator for the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario until his retirement. He is remembered by his family as a quiet and patient man who loved his family dearly. He enjoyed playing cards and always had a good sense of humour. Mr. Joy was predeceased by his parents Albert and Ethel Joy; and his wife Mildred (nee Coe) . He is survived by his children Debby (Ron) Coleman of Blackfalds, Alberta, Wesley (Clair) Joy of Marathon, Diane (Armand) Lavallee of Cobalt, Dona (Leonard) Bigras of Cobalt, Michael (Jennifer) Joy of Cobalt, Carol (Guy) DeBlasio of Calgary, Alberta and Randy (Colette) Joy of Petawawa; 26 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; and sisters Ella Bigras of Cobalt, Carol Ingleby of London and Beulah Dugas of Barrie. Englehart resident Jean Evelyn Mitchell died May 3, 2008 at the Englehart and District Hospital. She had been ill for two years. She was born in Cane Township September 15, 1931 to Jean and Frank Johnston. Educated in Cane Township and New Liskeard, she married Glenn Franklin Mitchell in Englehart June 20, 1951. Mrs. Mitchell worked at the CIBC bank and at the Timiskaming Housing Authority. She loved family life, laughter and being at the cottage. She was also a member of the Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Mitchell is survived by her son Steven (wife Nicole) of New Liskeard; grandsons Chris of New Liskeard, Curtis and Craig of Mississauga; great-granddaughter Kaydin of New Liskeard; brothers Bill Johnston (wife Barb) of Tillsonburg and Ed Johnston of Fergus; sisters Anne Lacarte (Barry) of Earlton and Betty Pearson of Englehart. She was predeceased by her husband Glenn Mitchell, parents Frank and Jean Johnston, brothers Clyde and Les Johnston, sisters Norma Johnston, Shirley Cote and Lil Porter, and many nieces and nephews. The funeral was arranged by McDonald Funeral Home in Englehart. The service was conducted by Pastor George Paraskevopoulos at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church in Englehart on May 5. Pallbearers were grandsons Chris, Curtis and Craig Mitchell, nephews Greg Pearson, Tyler Pearson and Lincoln Peever. Burial is at the Englehart Cemetery. STUBBS, LOIS MARGARET - It is with a sense of profound sadness that the family of Lois Margaret Stubbs announces her sudden and unexpected death at the Saint John Regional Hospital early on the morning of May 11, 2008. Born at Saint John, she was a daughter of the late Vernon and Ada (Shay) Pitt. Even in her 94th year, her sparkle and enthusiasm shone through, and she could still be counted on to put us in our place if she felt it was needed. In earlier days our Mother took the game of Bridge quite seriously and for many years would never miss her Bridge Club night. She was a Past Chief of Martello Temple #25, Pythian Sisters, as was her mother before her. She was honoured to have received her 40 year Service Pin. Besides her family she treasured her home at Ketepec on the Westfield Road from where she admired the beautiful view of the Saint John River. She will be missed by her pet cat who now will be spoiled by her grand daughter, Celina. Wonderful summers were spent boating on the "Flora Jean" with her husband, Ron. This was a shared passion always remembered by her after Dad's passing. Although her place in our homes will now be empty we keep her forever in our hearts. Lois is survived by her children, Arlene Hayward (Donald), James Stubbs (Beatrice), and Phillip Stubbs (Deborah), all of Westfield Road; a daughter-in-law, Betty Barker of Bathurst; a sister, Helen Hacala (Harry Wilson) of Rothesay; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two nieces. Lois was predeceased by her first husband, John Barker, who was killed in action during World War II; her second husband, Ronald Stubbs; a son, William (Bill) Barker; and a brother, Donald Pitt. MORRIS, Mary Ruth (nee Fee) - Died peacefully at the West Lincoln Memorial Hospital, Grimsby, Ontario, on Saturday, May 10, 2008, in her 97th year. Daughter of the late Thomas and Ida (Stone) Fee of Holland Centre, Ontario. Predeceased by her loving husband Jim Morris (1992), and by her four brothers and six sisters. Dear mother of Robert (Mary Kay nee Hicks) of Napanee, Wesley (Claudia Elliott) of Parry Sound, Marjorie of Welland, and David (Elizabeth McKinlay) of Owen Sound. Loving and cherished grandmother of Kieran Morris (Nathalie Larose), Ed Morris (Carin DeSimone), Rachel Morris (Michael Barnes), Ausi Elliott Morris and Skei Elliott Morris. Great-grandmother of Jonah and Mirabelle Barnes. Mary moved to the Niagara Peninsula in 1931 to teach at S. S. # 7, Willoughby Township. Following her marriage in 1936 to Jim Morris, she became a full time homemaker and a very devoted wife and mother. She loved the outdoors and when she wasn't busy in the kitchen, she could usually be found in the garden, pulling weeds or harvesting the bounty of the land. She spent many happy family vacations at LaBrash Lake, Parry Sound, watching her family play in the water, fishing with her husband, and sharing in extended family visits. Mary was a faithful and committed member of Lyons Creek United Church for over 70 years. Sincere appreciation is extended to Dr. Woodland and to the management and staff of The United Mennonite Home, Vineland, for their attentive and tender care of our mother during her almost three years of residence there. Rev. BATEMAN, John Wilbur 1920-2008 - Peacefully at the E.J. McQuigge Lodge in Cannifton under the attentive care of his caregivers on Saturday May 10, 2008 in his 89th year. Wilbur was the eldest child born to the late Ernest and Florence Bateman. He was predeceased in January 2007 by his beloved wife Ethel (nee Hagerman) of 62 years. Wilbur was the proud father of sons Harold (Sharon), Tweed and John (Valerie) Odessa and one daughter Mary (Jim) Fargey also of Tweed. He was the devoted grandfather of: Patricia (Larry), Christopher (Jody), Jeffrey (Andrea), Brooke (Joshua), Jennifer (Fred) and David as well as being great grandfather to Coralyn, Garett, Madison, Tori, and Reid. Also surviving are his brother Donald (Irene) and sister Margaret (late Laurison) of Belleville; brother Scott (Doris) of Napanee; brother Ray (Darlene) and sister Doris (Warren) of Mississauga. He was brother-in-law to the late Lorne and Margaret Hagerman of Stirling. He will be fondly remembered by many nephews, nieces, relative and friends. Wilbur received his life membership with the Oddfellows Lodge in 2000. He was fortunate to have spent his last few years in the care of loving and dedicated caregivers at Caressant Care Retirement Home in Marmora and most recently E.J. McQuigge Lodge in Cannifton. We will never forget their wonderful care and companionship over these years. STRANDLUND, Gladys 1926 - 2008 Gladys Strandlund, beloved wife of Leonard Strandlund for more than sixty years, passed away on Saturday, May 10, 2008 at the age of 81 years. Gladys was born in Calgary, AB on October 28, 1926 to Margaret and John Young. She was one of five girls in the "Young clan". Mom always loved her family, children, grandchildren and friends very much. She dearly loved to be with her sisters and her extended family members on all occasions. A simple "Hi Ma!" from her grandchildren made her day a positive one and enriched her life in many ways. Besides her loving husband, Len, Gladys is survived by her daughter, Linda, and son-in-law, Grant Repp of Calgary, AB; and her son, Gordon, and daughter-in-law, Brenda Strandlund of Calgary, AB. Gladys adored her four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her two grandsons are Douglas Repp and his wife, Julie; Michael Repp and his girlfriend, Amber McNicol; her two granddaughters, and three great-grandchildren are: Christine Thompson, her husband Gerald, and their son Van; Kelsey Cassels and her son, Braydon and her daughter, Kayda. Gladys is also survived by her four wonderful sisters, Kitty, Chrissie, Margaret and Lil. She has left behind many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends. The family would like to thank Gladys' caregivers during the past eight years at: the Peter Lougheed Hospital, the Glenmore Auxillary Hospital, McKenzie Towne Care Centre and her final team of caregivers at the Brentwood Care Centre. GIBSON,Reg 2008-05-12 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father and husband Reginald George Gibson, age 85, of Garden Ave. He passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 8, 2008, with his family by his side. Born in Fort William on July 17, 1922 to the late Mary and George Gibson. Reg was a veteran who served over seas with the R.C.A.F. during the Second World War. His career as an Electrician took him out of town on occasion, working for various companies and mills. In his retirement, he enjoyed going to the local coffee shops, catching up on the latest news and chatting with old friends. Reg touched many lives with his kind, generous and caring spirit. He was predeceased by his first wife, Norma (Killens), grandson David (in infancy), parents and sister Dorothy Gibson. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 39 years, Alexina; children: Barbara Ann (Bob), Brian (Judy), Kelvin, Diana, Patricia, Cynthia, Lisa, Treena (John) and Brenda (Charles); grandchildren Marion, Tara, Tracy (Jay), Shaun (Sheryl), Kelsey, Chloe, Ashley, Shara, Terry, and Georgia; and great grandchildren. The family would like to thank the Paramedics and the Emergency Staff of T.B.R.H.S.C. Respecting Dad‘s wishes, cremation has taken place with a private family service.
