HAMILTON, Boyd Walton September 6, 1924 - May 8, 2008 Boyd Walton Hamilton, beloved husband of O. Vivian of Calgary, passed away on Thursday, May 8, 2008 at the age of 83 years. Boyd was born in St. James, Manitoba. He served in the armed forces prior to graduating with a Bachelor of Science (honours) from the University of Manitoba. Boyd began his career as a geologist with Imperial Oil in 1951 and retired in 1983 after thirty-two years of service. He also served in various volunteer capacities, most notably as president of the Canadian Diabetes Association. Boyd is remembered by his three sons and two daughters, Colleen (Robert) Bennett of Edmonton, Thom (Janice) Hamilton of Burlington, ON, Bruce (Carla) Hamilton of Calgary, Brett (Cheryl) Hamilton of Seattle, WA, and Kathleen (Karl) Borzel of Winfield, AB. Boyd is also survived by his fifteen grandchildren and one great-grandson. Boyd was predeceased by his wife O. Vivian, his parents Agnes and Thomas Hamilton, and his sister Betty Forshaw. KLATT, Ben O. March 23, 1917 - May 8, 2008 Ben, beloved father and grandpa, passed away peacefully at his residence on Thursday, May 8, 2008 at the age of 91. Ben was born in Strasbourg, Sask. and moved to Calgary in 2002 to be closer to his family. His wife, Mary, predeceased Ben in 1997. He is survived by his son, Darvin (Marlene) Klatt of Lacombe, AB; daughter, Diane (Allan) Miller of Calgary, AB; two grandchildren, Terry (Wendy) Miller of Edmonton, AB and Conn Miller of Singapore. Our appreciation and sincere thank you to Dr. Eliason and the Staff of the McKenzie Towne Care Centre for the loving care that was given to him in his time of need. WALSH, MARGARET A. - The death of Margaret A. (Hennigar) Walsh occurred at the Kiwanis Nursing Home, Sussex on Friday, May 9, 2008. Margaret was the beloved wife of R.L. Joseph Walsh. Born in Morden, NS, a daughter of the late Cranmer and Yolande Hennigar. Margaret is survived by her ever-loving husband R.L. Joseph Walsh; daughter, Louise (John) Poirier of Halifax, NS and grandchildren Kenneth and Neil; daughter, Karen (Daniel) Duguay of Sussex Corner and grandchildren, Joey (Susan), Jeremy (Christie), Kathleen (Marc), Louise and Denise,; daughter, Angela Lombard (Steven) of Fredericton and grandchildren Tyler and Maddison; son, Brian (Susan) of Nauwigewauk, NB and grandchildren, Matthew and Michael and son Derek (Lucy) of Fort McMurray, AB and grandchildren, Daniel, Jeremiah and Jonathan; sisters, Christine Fair of Dartmouth, NS, Gloria McNeil of Burlington, ON and Jennie Hennigar of Toronto, ON, brothers; Raymond Hennigar, Arnold (Bessie) Hennigar and Gordon Hennigar, all of Toronto, ON., several nieces and nephews. A special thank you to Sharon and Fred Vidican for their constant love and support. Margaret graduated from High School at the age of 15 and went on to teach grades 1 through 12 in a one-room schoolhouse in rural Nova Scotia. She moved to Halifax and became an accounting clerk at Simpson's Department Store. She met and married the love of her life in 1951 and raised five children. In 1965, after moving to Fredericton, she returned to the workforce as an accounting clerk at Lavine's, moving then to the provincial government and then to the NB Liquor Corporation, where she remained until her retirement. Margaret was a Past President of the Senior Citizens Club in Hampton. She had a passion for gardening, spending many hours among her flower and vegetable gardens. She loved cross country skiing and was a member of the Wastawea Ski Club. She most cherished the time she spent with her children and grandchildren. The family will receive visitors at the Sussex Select Community Funeral Home, 21 Aiton Road Sussex (506-433-2133) on Sunday from 3 to 7 PM. Mass will be celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, Church Avenue Sussex on Monday, May 14, 2008 at 2:00 PM. Interment will be at St. Alphonsus Cemetery, Hampton. OBITUARY K. BARRY OLSEN 1935-2008 Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog Barry Olsen passed away peacefully at his home on May 4, 2008. His family and friends will miss him dearly but have wonderful memories of their times together. He leaves behind his wife and best friend of 51 years Janet, his children Keith, David (Brenda), Jane (Mark), grandchildren Ryan, Jeffrey, Annie and sister-in-law Sheila (Carl). He was an accomplished musician, which was shared and enjoyed by everyone. He was well loved and respected by his colleagues in the shipping industry. In his 53 year career he worked his way from clerk at Robert Reford Company to president of Maersk Canada Inc. and remained chairman after retirement. He accepted the appointment of Honorary Consul General of Denmark and was knighted by Her Majesty The Queen of Denmark for his contributions toward trade relations between both countries. BYRNE, Nelsie Alice (Lady Rushton) September 22, 1921 - May 7, 2008 Nelsie Alice (Lady Rushton) Byrne, beloved wife of Frank Byrne (Lord Rushton) of Calgary, passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at the age of 86 years. Nelsie was born in West Bromwich, England in 1921. In 1941 she proudly joined the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) for four years. After meeting Frank in 1947, she married her darling in 1949. Their only child John arrived shortly thereafter in 1950. In 1954, the family immigrated to Edmonton, AB and in 1966, moved to Calgary. Nelsie was a kind and friendly soul. She loved all animals, especially Ben and Blade. She could knit like no other and had a wicked green thumb. Nelsie was extremely proud of her talented son, John, and would smile with delight and say, "I'm good now that I see you" every time Frank walked in the room. Besides her loving husband Frank and son John, Nelsie is remembered by her brother Ivan (Sue) Hulme, close family friends, The Finches, and many others. SCHOFIELD, Margaret On Thursday, May 8, 2008 at the Elisabeth Bruyere Health Centre in her 73rd year. After a brave battle with cancer fought with characteristic dignity and humour, she is finally reunited with her great love Moe Farlett. Predeceased by her parents Willow and John, she is survived by her sister Joan (Al) of New Brunswick and brother Gary of Ottawa and many nieces and nephews. "Maggie" was the beloved stepmother of Lyla Angelo (Bill) and adored "grandmother" to Amy and Joseph. Margaret attended Lisgar Collegiate and was a long-time employee of the British High Commission and IBM Canada. She was an avid skier and volunteer member of the ski patrol. After retiring from IBM, she volunteered for the Canadian Cancer Society. In all walks of life, she made many dear friends. Margaret's family would like to thank the staff of the Ottawa General Hospital and the Elisabeth Bruyere Health Centre for their care and kindness to her and support of the family. SMITH, Zee Crouch - of Ramsgate Lane, Halifax, NS, died peacefully Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at home, in the arms of her husband. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother, a beloved aunt and a loyal and trusted friend to many. Zee was born on May 29, 1941, in West Stewartstown, NH, grew up within sight of the White Mountains and always considered Lancaster her home. Daughter of the late Rev. William H. and Madge Crouch, Zee often credited her parents with her love of people, her determination through difficult times, and her belief that “there is always room for one more”. The youngest of four sisters, she was predeceased by sisters, Margaret Hammond and Nan (Bill) Harrison; and niece and goddaughter, Joy Harrison. She will be sadly missed by eldest sister, Mary Beth (Win) Robinson of Concord, NH. Zee was very proud of her nieces and nephews and took great delight in her relationships with them. Zee met her beloved husband, Terry, at Acadia University in 1959. They married in 1968 and over the past 39 years built a strong and loving marriage together. Always grateful for the gentle love and generosity of their mother, children Zachary (Adelle) of Fall River, NS and Bronwen (Marc) Cooke of Toronto, will miss her terribly. Zee began her career as a passionate teacher in Calgary, AB in 1966, and subsequently taught in Vancouver, BC; Annapolis, MD; Baltimore, MD; and Arlington, MA. Upon moving to Kingston in 1972, she took on her greatest teaching challenge as a full-time mother. She also gave energy and enthusiasm to volunteer work in the Kingston community, contributing to Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Queen's University Faculty Women's Club, Kingston Transit Advisory Committee, and St. Margaret's United Church. Most of Zee's volunteer work involved quietly caring for those around her. Later, she was employed as Fellowship Co- ordinator at St. Margaret's, finally realizing what was probably her true calling. In 2002 Zee and Terry moved to Halifax, NS, where they have greatly enjoyed rekindling old friendships and discovering new ones. Friends and family are quick to describe Zee as a great friend, a source of strength and an incredible inspiration. Zee was always filled with, and driven by, an extraordinary sense of hope. Many were touched by her sense of humour, her emotional generosity and her love of life, even through the adversities of MS and breast cancer. As she faced greater physical limitations Zee remained determined to stay true to who she was, always expressing tremendous concern for people in an unassuming and non- judgmental way. COX, Wallace Dunning (Peter) Q.C., B.A., LL.B. Veteran of D-Day (Juno Beach) With sadness we announce the passing of Wallace (Peter) Cox on Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at 92 years of age. Son of the late Frank W. Cox and Ethel Gordon Dunning Cox. Beloved husband of Mary Catherine Ellis, his wife of 62 years, and loving father of Merridy Cox Bradley. He is sorely missed by friends and family, especially by John and Joyce Ellis and Doris Ellis Snook. Born in Toronto in 1916, he attended Boxgrove School in England, Upper Canada College, University College (U of T), and Osgoode Hall Law School. He was a captain in the Royal Canadian Artillery 14th Field Regiment (1941-45). He was much respected as a family solicitor with Cox, Armstrong and Smith. A member of Beta Theta Pi, he remained active with his fraternity brothers all his life. He played with the Grace Church Cricket Club, where he was a member for over 50 years. For many years, Pete and Mary held a spring get-together at the Caledon Ski Club for friends from MacCauley/Cradleship Creche, the COB Club, and the Sunday ski group. Family and friends fondly remember spending many summer days with Peter at their summer home on the shores of Lake Temiskaming. A memorial service for the immediate family will be held in the future. Harold Broughton (d. 1989). Loving mother of Catherine Broughton (Joseph Marshall) of Thornhill; Thora Broughton (George Abonyi) of Ottawa, and Alan Broughton (Heather) of Ottawa. Cherished grandmother of Adam (Sarah), Alyssa, Erik and partner Kathryn Aker, David, Ben, Sam and Avery; and devoted great-grandmother of Emma. Survived by her brother Herbert Johnson (Mildred) of Oakville, her sister, Christine MacKay of Toronto, her sister in law Anne Johnson of Comox, BC, and by many nephews, nieces and their families. Daughter of the late Sigurdur (Sam) Johnson and Thora (Asmundson) Johnson of Vancouver. Predeceased by her brother Val and his wife Magda, and brothers Harold, Raymond and Randolph Johnson. Born in Tantallon, Saskatchewan, Esther grew up in Prince Albert and Wynyard. She graduated from Saskatoon Normal School and taught school in Aneroid before meeting Harold at Dafoe. They married in 1944 and soon moved to Toronto, where they resided on Tyrrell Avenue and then Inglewood Drive. Proud of her Icelandic heritage, she and Harold were staunch supporters of the Icelandic Canadian Club of Toronto. They were avid curlers at the Granite Club and enjoyed family summers at Balsam Lake, and skiing at Limberlost and Summit. For many years she volunteered as a teacher's assistant at inner city schools, and as a teacher of English as a Second Language. Esther was a long time member of Timothy Eaton Memorial Church and an enthusiastic participant in its Community Service Club. DEGENSTEIN, August Joseph Passed away peacefully at Vulcan Extendicare, May 8, 2008 at the age of 94 years. August was born on October 24, 1913 at Berwick, North Dakota to Joseph and Barbara Degenstein. When August was five years old they moved to Turin, Alberta and later to Lomond. August joined the Royal Canadian Engineers Corp. in 1942 and served on the front lines in WWII. He married Dorothy Hummel in June, 1943 and returned to the war until his discharge in December 1945. August returned home and moved his family to Warner where he worked on the Lorne McKenzie farm. In 1948 they moved back to the Champion area where he purchased a farm. August and Dorothy moved into Champion in 1982 where he lived until February of this year when he moved into Extendicare. August was a fine accordion player and he, accompanied by his wife Dorothy on the piano, played many dances with several orchestras throughout Southern Alberta. August is survived by his loving wife Dorothy of sixty-five years, a son Blain (Joan) of Airdrie, a daughter Jacquie Shand (Harvey Kraft) of Calgary, four grandchildren, April Shand, Amy (Roy Stuchkless), Jenny (Tim Becker), Clark Degenstein (Erin), three great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, seven step-great-grandchildren, a brother Frank, two brothers-in-law, George (Alice) Hummel, Ramon (Jean) Hummel, sister-in-law Racille (George) Ellis and numerous nieces and nephews. August was predeceased by a baby daughter Dewilla, a daughter-in-law Loree, five brothers, two sisters, his parents and ten half-siblings. GAMBRELL, Annie Laurie Walker. Anne passed away on Thursday, May 9, 2008, at home in Ina Grafton Gage, St. Catharines, ON. Beloved wife of Hood Gambrell and predeceased by first husband Fred Whitcombe. Much loved mother of Deborah (Ian Clark), step-mother to Bill Gambrell (Janet) and Bob Gambrell (Chris) and cherished grandmother to Zoe (Mike Ross) and Janna (Paul Kernan) and to David Gambrell (Linda) and Sarah Gambrell (Zak Beharie). Daughter of the late Francis McGregor Walker and Annie Anne Stewart Walker. Predeceased by sisters Agnes (Wilbur Wallace) & Irene (Lorne Ortwein) and survived by brother Norman Walker (Ruth). Anne was born in Verdun, Quebec and lived most of her adult life in Georgeville, Quebec, where she owned and operated Mossy Ledge and later The Ladybug Boutique. She will be sorely missed by her family and by her many friends. The family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to the palliative care team of St. Catharines, and to the exceptionally caring staff of Ina Grafton Gage Village.
