OBITUARY KEN WATSON 1925 - 2008 Ken Watson passed away at the age of eighty-three years on Monday, March 31, 2008 at the Jewish General Hospital, following a brief illness. He will be lovingly missed by his wife Jean McRae of fifty-seven years; sons Gordon and Glenn (Catherine); granddaughters Nova and Brie-Anne; grandsons Lorne, Matthew and Kevin; great-grandsons Phillip, Jacob and Caidin; great-granddaughter Alexis; brothers Raymond (Carmel), Reg (Jo), and Len (Hilda); brother-in-law Grant (June) as well as many nieces and nephews. Ken was born the son of Reginald and Maude Watson and lived all his life in Montreal. A veteran of WWII, he served in the Navy. Afterwards, he was employed by Dominion Textile throughout his career until his retirement in 1990. As per the family's request there will not be any visitation but a celebration of his life to be held in June. Special thanks to the staff at the Griffith McConnell and the Jewish General Hospital. OBITUARY RITA M. YOUNG Passed away peacefully on March 27, 2008 at the age of ninety at Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga. Beloved mother of her four sons, Bernard, Richard, Kevin and Mark; predeceased by her loving husband Dick; devoted grandmother to her twelve grandchildren, Louise, Brent, Scott, Laurie, Shannon, Elizabeth, Marta, Kristina, Adam, Adrienne, Patrick & Caroline and her thirteen great-grandchildren; beloved sister to her surviving brothers Stan & Joe and to her predeceased sisters Irene & Louise (Lemieux). She will be remembered always by all for her endless love, devotion and caring for her family, her four sons and late husband and all her grandchildren & great-grandchildren. A special thanks to the Nursing staff and Caregivers at the Wenleigh Nursing Home and Erin Mills Lodge in Mississauga who gave her excellent care during her time there. A Memorial Mass & Celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, May 10 at St Malachy's Catholic Church in Montreal followed by burial of her ashes at the Cote-des-Neiges Cemetery. ROBSON, John Donald April 16, 1925 - March 22, 2008 (John) Don Robson passed away on March 22, 2008 after a brief battle with cancer. He leaves to mourn, his wife of fifty-nine years, Madeline and his daughters, Donna Jean (Gary) Wright of New Denver, BC and Joanne (Bill) Horkoff of Invermere, BC. He was predeceased by his son, Ted, in 1978. He is also loved and missed by his three grandchildren, Tristan Monnastes, Jolene (Kent) Kirton and Fraser (Kanami) Milne. He has one surviving brother, Jim (Bea) Robson, who resides in Vancouver. Don resided in Calgary for most of his life and was a Telephone Pioneer. He retired from AGT in 1985. He spent the last three years in Invermere where he enjoyed the view of the mountains, the members of the community and the wide variety of wild life. LAMARCHE LÉVEILLÉ, Rita 1923 - 2008 C'est avec tristesse que nous vous annonçons le décès de notre mère, Rita Lamarche Léveillé. Le mercredi 26 mars dernier, par un bel après-midi ensoleillé, maman passait de l'autre côté de la Rive. En 3 jours seulement, elle a perdu son combat contre une pneumonie subite et foudroyante. La semaine précédant son grand départ, elle avait vécu un moment intense de bonheur pour ses 85 ans. Une fête-surprise avait réuni autour d'elle les êtres qu'elle affectionnait particulièrement : plus d'une trentaine de neveux et nièces avec leurs enfants, des amis de longue date et d'anciens collègues de travail. Quelques jours plus tard, elle nous quittait encore réjouie et émue de ces ultimes retrouvailles. Veuve depuis 36 ans, elle laisse aujourd'hui dans le deuil son gendre bien-aimé, Pierre Tassé et ses deux petits-enfants qu'elle adorait tant : Jolène et Jean-Philippe. Elle s'en est allée retrouver son époux (Yvon Léveillé), sa jumelle (Madeleine Jodoin), sa soeur (Yolande Langlois), son frère (Paul Lamarche) et bien d'autres amis et membres de sa famille. La dépouille de maman, selon ses volontés, ne sera pas exposée. Nous recevrons toutefois les condoléances de parents et amis le samedi 12 avril 2008 dès 13 h, suivi d'une liturgie à 16 h. PFEIFER, Patricia Elinor "Pat" March 18, 1930 - March 26, 2008 It is with deep regret that we announce the sudden passing on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 of Patricia Elinor Pfeifer, aged 78 years at Lethbridge, Alberta. Pat was a warm, kind and loving person who will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Left to cherish her memory are her sons Rod Pfeifer of Lethbridge, Alberta and Kim Pfeifer (Lindsey) of Calgary, Alberta; sister Audrey, and brother Tom of Red Deer, Alberta and nephew Brett Sopotiuk of Victoria. Pat was born in Detroit, Michigan and lived most of her early life near Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba and later moved to Winnipeg where she worked in the payroll department at the University of Manitoba for many years. After retiring, Pat lived in New Westminster, BC, Calgary, Red Deer and finally Lethbridge, Alberta where she made many friends over the years. OBITUARY JAMES ALISTER GRANT CAMPBELL Former MP for Stormont, died peacefully in his sleep on March 12, 2008. Grant Campbell was fiercely proud of his United Empire Loyalist heritage. His great, great-grandfather, John McDonald of Garth, was a partner in the Nor-West Company and founded the western trading posts of Rocky Mountain House and Fort Gibraltar. His marriage to a Scots/Cree woman, Nancy Small conferred on their descendents the now coveted status of Metis. Their home, Inverdine House, is now a historic site owned by Parks Canada. Born in 1922 and brought up in Cornwall, Ontario, Campbell served with the Black Watch and the Royal Canadian Engineers during the Second World War, leaving the forces as a Captain in the Intelligence Corps (Reserve). While studying for a degree in forestry at the University of New Brunswick he worked in the logging industry in Northern Quebec and spent several summers in British Columbia log-rolling and timber-cruising where he patrolled long stretches of the coastline for fire in the sole company of his beloved Irish setter, Bonnie. Switching to law, he graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1952 and married Priscilla Wanklyn of Montreal. They moved to Ottawa where Campbell worked as an Assistant Crown Attorney while indulging his passion for Conservative politics. In the 1958 the fledgling politician won the bellwether riding of Stormont, becoming the first Conservative representative for the riding in over twenty years, and, at thirty-five, Canada's youngest ever MP at the time. Early on he developed a reputation as an outspoken backbencher, speaking on such issues as trade and defence. As the local MP, Campbell was instrumental in bringing deep harbour facilities to the city of Cornwall and instituting pioneering vocational training for the unemployed. His political career was cut short in 1962 when, in a deferred election necessitated by the death of a rival candidate, Campbell lost to the Liberal Lucien Lamoreux, with a heartbreakingly small majority of fifty-four votes. Ten years later he stood again against the Hon. Lucien Lamoreux, then Speaker of the House of Commons; again he lost. Remaining an active member of the Conservative party Campbell moved his family to Almonte, Ontario. He established a rural legal practice in neighbouring Carleton Place and wrote a general interest column, Campbell's Comments, for various weekly newspapers, while his wife bred sheep, Cairn terriers and raised horses. From 1975-87 Campbell was a member of the Ontario Municipal Board, presiding over planning, zoning and land compensation claims. In 1996, after the untimely death of his wife, Campbell returned to his roots in eastern Ontario, settling in the historic village of Williamstown where he became colourful fixture in his ubiquitous walking stick, kilt and Scots bonnet. An adventurous traveller, an omnivorous reader and a passionate historian well into his eighties, Campbell will be missed by his family and the many local people who so kindly looked after him in his declining years. LOWTHER, Ronald Richard 1936 - 2008 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ronald Richard Lowther at the young age of 71 after a courageous battle with cancer. Ron was a kind-hearted and loving man and always the "gentleman" to those around him. Ronald was predeceased by his father Jim Lowther, mother Betty (Watson), and an infant son, Kevin Jeffrey. Ronald will be lovingly remembered by his wife Marguerite (Peggy Stephens), his son Kenneth, daughters Karen (Kevin) Gardner and Beverly-Lynn (Dean) Eliason, and his five grandchildren Mikki Gardner, Danny Gardner, April Eliason, Adam Eliason and Jessy Eliason. Ron was born July 19, 1936 at the General Hospital in Calgary, into a large family of aunts, uncles and cousins from the Big Valley area of Alberta. Ron grew up in Calgary but loved spending time with his grandparents and cousins on their farms in Big Valley area. Ron was an accomplished violin player and also played the trumpet in school. At the age of fourteen, he moved with his parents to Swift Current, Saskatchewan, where he met his future wife Peggy. Peggy's family moved to Kelowna and Ron's family moved back to Calgary where in 1952 he began his apprenticeship as a printer with the Calgary Herald. Ron and Peggy continued to keep in close touch with each other and happily married on August 4, 1956 in Peggy's hometown of Kelowna. Peggy then moved to Calgary with Ron where they lived for thirty-six years and raised their family of three children. During this time, Ron joined the Masonic "Mosaic" Lodge in Calgary. Ron deeply loved his role in the Masonic order. In the summer of 1992, after forty years of service in the printing department at the Calgary Herald, Ron took early retirement and together he and Peggy retired to a lovely home in Kelowna. Even after Ron retired to Kelowna he continued to be an avid Calgary sports fan and loved following "his" Flames and Stampeders through each and every game. During his retirement, Ron also continued to work with his computers. Usually each day he would have both of his systems up and running, learning everything he could about the systems and internet. In Kelowna Ron joined the "Prince Charles" Masonic Lodge and was an active member up until his passing. The family would like to thank the Prince Charles lodge members for all of the support they provided to Ron and Peggy during his long illness and hospital stay. The family would also like to give special thanks to all of the nurses at the Kelowna General Hospital, 4B, as they took wonderful care of Ron during his last two months. If friends so desire, memorial donations in Ron's name may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society. DICKIE, Patty (nee Lockey) July 14, 1955 - April 2, 2008 Patty Dickie passed away on April 2, 2008 at the age of 52, after courageously fighting brain cancer for twenty months. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family. Patty was born in Calgary and attended Henry Wise Wood High School and Mount Royal College. She was a flight attendant for twenty years and worked for Pacific Western Airlines and Canadian Airlines. One of Patty's greatest passions was travelling extensively with family and friends. She was especially proud of the book club she helped found - it was her passion until the end. Those close to her will remember Patty for her incredible love of life, her keen sense of humour and the time she always made for her friends and family. She always had a positive outlook on life and shared that with everyone. She will be dearly missed by us all. Patty is survived by her loving husband Bryon; her most precious gifts, her children, Lauren and Brett; her father Don Lockey; sister Sharon Lockey; mother-in-law Audrey; brothers-in-law Ken and Rob; sisters-in-law Shawnie and Sandy; nieces and nephews, Blaire, Chris, Samantha, Mark, Erin, and Scott. Patty was predeceased by her mother Irene Lockey and father-in-law Horace Dickie. DINELLE, Elzear Arthur Peacefully at the Montfort Hospital on Friday, April 4, 2008 at age 88. Son of the late Arthur Dinelle and Laura Joanis. Beloved husband of the late Jeannette Samson. He will be missed by three brothers Philippe, Arthur and Daniel, two sisters Therese and Gabrielle, seven children Irene (Gilles), Denis (Lettie), Marc (Ruth), Jean, Louis, Alain and Diane. He was very proud of his seven grandchildren Michele, Mireille, Gilbert, Eric, Mark, Melissa and Courtney and six great-grandchildren Rebecca, Roxanne, Emilie, Isabelle, Sara and Edith. HILL, Ronald George 1937 - 2008 On April 2, 2008, we lost a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. Ron was the beloved husband and best friend of Lynn (Condie). Father of Karen (Bill Brannen) and David (Zita Oliveira). Best Papa in the world to Michael & Kelly Brannen and Noa Oliveira Hill, who will miss his wit and humour. Brother of Wayne (Helene). Brother-in-law of Barb & John Reid and John & Anne Condie. Ron will be greatly missed at his cottage in Bristol, Quebec on the Ottawa River where family and friends loved to gather. OBITUARY ROBERT M. MITCHELL July 15, 1918 - March 27, 2008 Robert M. Mitchell of White Rock, B.C. died at his winter residence in Sarasota, Florida. A memorial service will be held at the First United Church in White Rock in the summer. He is survived by his daughters Karen Clarke of Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. and Prof. Brenda Mitchell of Berlin, Germany, by his son Glenn Mitchell of Nelson, B.C., two grandchildren Serena and Justin Clarke in New York State. Bob was married for 62 years to Grace Elliott who predeceased him. Born in Winnipeg, Bob grew up in Regina and joined the Royal Bank of Canada there in 1937. He served as a pilot with the Royal Canadian Air Force during WWII, was shot down and spent three years in the prison camp famous from the movie "The Great Escape". After the war he completed his B.A. and B.Com. at the University of Saskatchewan and his MBA at the University of Chicago before rejoining the Royal Bank in Montreal, retiring as Vice-President, International Money Markets in 1979. During his world travels for the bank Bob visited 72 countries. In Montreal Bob was a member of Strathmore United Church, Beaconsfield Golf Club and The University Club as well as regularly attending concerts of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. In White Rock Bob was active at the First United Church and the Hazelmere Golf Club, the Probus Club and the Aircrew Association. Bob Mitchell's life was greatly enriched by the love of his wife Grace who was organist, choir director and piano teacher. Her last years were marked by Alzheimer's Disease and Bob Mitchell was a dedicated and untiring caregiver. After Grace's death Bob found a surrogate family in White Rock through his friend and colleague Betty Doherty and her family. Bob's children are grateful to them for their love and friendship during his last years. Bob was recovering from a serious case of shingles when he passed away suddenly during a visit of his daughters in Sarasota. Bob will be remembered warmly by all who knew him.
